And you thought my college football predictions were bad…

Well as you might know, I thought my predictions weren’t bad for college football, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary.  My Stassen score was better than last year’s so that meant I was closer in my conference predictions than I was the previous season.  Problem is, compared to the magazines and websites that actually do this thing for a living, I was almost dead last.  Now I turn my attention to the NFL predictions I made.  I am sure this will work out better right?  I’m not holding my breath.  Same way as the past two seasons: I will take snippets of my NFL predictions post and put them here and see if I was right or if I might have been drunk when I made that prediction.  Let us begin.

I can see a fair amount of parity this season. There are always candidates to win more than 12 games this season but I could see it where one or even no teams hit the 13-win mark. The best candidates are the LA Rams, New England, Philadelphia and Jacksonville.

I got the Rams right!  Thirteen wins on the nose.  And the Patriots were close with 11.  There was actually a decent amount of parity this season so I wasn’t totally wrong with that.  A bit of a miss on the Eagles but that was more due to their slow start than anything.  Then there’s the Jaguars.  Ho boy.  Talk about bottoming out.  They were an unmitigated disaster.  This coincides with the end of the Blake Bortles era and the start of the (pick one out of) Kyler Murray/Dwayne Haskins/Drew Lock era.  So in the end, this prediction wasn’t too bad but not fantastic.

I see some great races happening in both South divisions, along with the NFC West and North. The others won’t be near as competitive with the Patriots easily steamrolling to yet another AFC East crown. Also, and let’s be honest here, the LA Chargers will win the AFC West because the rest of the teams just aren’t that good and probably will all be under .500.

Well I was half-correct about the South divisions.  The Saints were seriously good and ran away with the NFC version.  The AFC South was fun though.  The Texans, Colts and Titans came down to the wire in the best divisional race in the league.  I was almost right with the other divisions but the AFC North was also a barrel of fun.  That’s partly because the Ravens and Steelers seemed to one-up each other in trying NOT to win the division and the fact that the CLEVELAND F’N BROWNS were almost .500!  And my apologies to the Kansas City Chiefs, the most exciting team in god-knows-how-long.

The NFL Wild Card race should be pretty something. I have the Packers and Falcons getting those two spots but the Niners, Lions and even perhaps the Giants and Cowboys will have something to say about that.

Good lord what in the hell?  What do I make of all this?  Well the Cowboys won the NFC East!  But that only happened because the rest of the division was garbage most of the season.  The rest of the teams I listed were awful.  I get a pass for the Niners since they would have been much better if Jimmy Garoppolo hadn’t been injured.  The Packers and Falcons might have to actually rebuild after their shitty seasons.  Yet another Bill Belichick disciple failed as a head coach.  Go figure.  And finally the Giants…well they have Saquon Barkley.  That’s good right?

In the AFC, it almost feels like a race to get over .500 to get into the playoffs. Or maybe just to .500. I think the Texans and Titans will be the two Wild Card choices and to be honest, do any of the other non-qualifying AFC teams deserve to make it? Probably not.

The Titans were close, at 9-7.  The Steelers were even closer at 9-6-1.  But yeah, other than those two teams, every other AFC team that missed the playoffs was under .500.  But Indy was surely better than I figured they’d be but that sounds like something most experts would be saying right now.

Should be a three-team race for the bottom with Tampa Bay, Indianapolis and Washington vying for that #1 overall pick. Buffalo and Cleveland should be juuuuuuuuuuuuuust good enough to not be lumped in with those three teams which is an improvement for the Browns and a bit of a disaster for the Bills (who fully look like they are attempting to tank this season).

Buffalo wasn’t good but Cleveland was fun to watch.  And Indy, as I said before, was damn good.  At one point it looked like the Redskins would actually win the horrifically bad NFC East but tailed off down the stretch.  Tampa Bay was awful though so that’s close.  No, it was San Francisco (who shouldn’t have been this bad but Jimmy G) and the Cardinals who were the dirt worst.  Oh and the Jets.  The fact I didn’t include them in this part baffles me even to this day.

Last year I said Jameis Winston would win the MVP. Good fucking lord. This year I will select Jared Goff. Sorry Jared.

Goff was good.  Quite good.  But Patrick Mahomes had a season for the ages.  And so did Drew Brees.  So there was no way Jared was getting into that MVP race despite the fact the Rams were the second-best regular season team this year.

I am not even going to pick a Rookie of the Year. No point. I’ll just be wrong.

I honestly would have picked Saquon Barkley as the Rookie of the Year.  He was…the offensive ROY.  The defensive ROY was Darius Leonard who I never would have picked to win that award.  So I would have been half-right.

And now my playoffs preview.  Let’s see how good/awful I did:

  • I had the Rams winning the Super Bowl and the Patriots losing in the Conference Championship.  Not bad.
  • I did have Pittsburgh winning the AFC though so that wasn’t so good of a prediction.
  • Get this: I had the Rams beating New Orleans in the NFC Championship.  Wow!  I am pretty damn proud of myself for that.
  • The team I whiffed on the most was easily Jacksonville.  Who knew that 2017 would be an anomaly?  I also had Atlanta and Green Bay in and they were pretty bad.

All in all, I had a pretty good year with my NFL predictions.  Which is stunning to be honest with you.

For the most part, we are into the third year of no offseason realignment news right after the college football season has finished.  There will always be rumblings but nothing serious since the Big XII did their disastrous look into expanding.  I still think we will see major happenings on that front but we are at least a year or two away from that.

The next post will be the conference tournament schedule and it’s a while away from now.  The conference tournaments don’t officially start until March 4th.  As has been the case the past few years, the Atlantic Sun is the first conference to start the fun.  But we won’t see any of that.  As per usual, the first conference tournament action we will see will be on the Friday night (March 8th) when the Ohio Valley Conference has their second semi-final matchup.  Things are kind of slow through that first weekend, then everything goes crazy the following Monday with a string of days containing a ton of games to watch.  I still wonder if the NCAA Tournament would be better if it was done FA Cup-style.  So that we would be bound to see a team in like the SWAC or WAC or Metro Atlantic go on a crazy run through the first few rounds.  Then their fifth-round matchup would be again Duke and Zion Williamson would pour in 65 points and the Blue Devils would win by 80.  Good times.

Anyway, enjoy your week everyone.

This sucks – Week 5 NFL Recap/Rant

Now I am not a Houston Texans fan by any stretch of the imagination.  However I am a fan of J.J. Watt.  Not just the fact he is the most dominant defensive player in football today.  But what he did for the city of Houston after the hurricane ravaged that city cannot be overstated.  So to see his what happened to him this past Sunday night was a bit heart-wrenching.  He has a fracture in his left leg that will require surgery meaning his season is done.  It’s too bad since Deshaun Watson has revitalized the moribund Houston offense and they were looking good this season.  Their chances of contending for the division are probably over although they do play in the AFC South meaning they still have a chance.

  • Speaking of the AFC South, how about those Jacksonville Jaguars? They destroyed Pittsburgh and now with Marcus Mariota being hampered by injuries may just be the odds-on favourite in the division.  It helps to have a bunch of good, young talent and that Blake Bortles has finally decided to live up to his draft billing from years ago.  Kind of like how it took Alex Smith a few years to actually look like a former high draft pick.
  • Hey finally the Pats defense didn’t look horrible. Still, it took Nick Folk forgetting how to kick field goals for New England to beat Tampa Bay in a close Thursday night affair.
  • The Browns are horrible. Just…horrible.  Maybe they will be trending towards 0-16 again.  How does Hue Jackson still have a job?
  • Speaking of shitty teams, how about those New York Giants? Everyone (and I mean everyone) figured the Jets would be the worse of the two New York teams.  Hell, some people had the Giants going deep in the playoffs.  But the Giants offense is abysmal and Odell Beckham Jr. can’t stop with the drama.  It’s a mess. (Update: OBJ is now out for the season.  So a double-edged sword: they lose their top offensive weapon but the histrionics will be at a minimum now).
  • Mitchapalooza began last night finally in the Windy City.  Mitchell Trubisky got his first start for the Bears and honestly didn’t look too bad considered the first 35 minutes of the game were awful to watch (at least from an offensive standpoint for both teams).  He will improve for sure.  Bears fans should just brace themselves for a Top 5 pick again this coming draft.
  • That’s the Buffalo Bills we all know and love.  Playing down to an inferior opponent is a tradition in Western New York.  No different this time around as the Bills looked not that great against a struggling Bengals team.  Look, the offense is going to have figure something out because the defense can only keep things at bay for so long.
  • I remember seeing E.J. Manuel in person at a Bills preseason game when he had just been drafted. At the time my thoughts were:
    • He is monstrous for a quarterback
    • He is not very mobile
    • He overshot every receiver he threw to

So yeah, not very promising.  And he isn’t right now for the Oakland Raiders who are DESPERATE for Derek Carr to return.

It’s still early in the season so there’s not a whole lot to provide here.  I mean I could talk about Cam Newton’s post-game interview with Pam Oliver where he basically didn’t answer what Oliver was asking about what had happened this week and did the ridiculous shtick of the team as a family and having them back him up and shit like that.  For what, Cam?  You not getting a lifetime supply of yogurt anymore?

Alright, let’s do something else kind of dumb: If the playoff started today.

1 Kansas City (AFC West) 1 Philadelphia (NFC East)
2 Buffalo (AFC East) 2 Green Bay (NFC North)
3 Jacksonville (AFC South) 3 Carolina (NFC South)
4 Pittsburgh (AFC North) 4 Seattle (NFC West)
Wild Card Teams: Wild Card Teams:
1 Denver 1 Atlanta
2 NY Jets/Baltimore/New England 2 Detroit/LA Rams/Minnesota

I still find it a bit funny to see Buffalo in the #2 spot.  We know it won’t last.  Same with the Jets.  Are Carson Wentz and Jared Goff both the real deal?  So far so good this season.  The Eagles at the top are an interesting proposition.  With the rest of the division struggling they could get at least a couple games out in front by the midway point of the season and conceivably start putting their foot on the other teams’ necks early.  It would be quite the turnaround in the city of Brotherly Love.

I know the NFL would cream their pants if the Rams made the playoffs.  It would be a dream come true for them.  And yes, it would probably be the one time you would see the cavernous LA Coliseum packed for an NFL football game if they got a home playoff date.

More Fun Belt action this Wednesday as South Alabama visits Troy.  As of right now, it looks like it’s on TSNs 1, 3, 4 and 5.  How insane is that?  For a Sun Belt game?  That tells you there is NOTHING else on that night.  Or at least nothing else that TSN could show.

Still on the fence about making a post tomorrow.  We shall see.  Depends on mah feelings and shit.  Have a great late start to the week.

The end is here – Week 17 NFL TV Schedule

We made it.  After a VERY rough first couple months of the NFL season we have finally made it to the final week of the regular season.  Unfortunately for the NFL, a lot of the playoff picture (especially in the AFC), was sewn up last week.  I mean there will always be important games in the final week of the season.  There can’t not be.  However, I believe the NFL would have loved to have had at least three or four really important games on the slate as it would drive a lot more eyeballs to them rather than, say, the Sunday Afternoon movie or whatever else they show on TV on Sundays.

Alright, a little different format this time around.  I am going to use my college football American Thanksgiving format to go through the games one-by-one since some need more than just a blurb telling you if you will be getting that game in your area or not.  Here goes!  Oh, and remember, all the games this week are on Sunday.  No stupid Thursday Night Football.  No Monday Night Football.  Just games where the games are meant to be (kind of).

Early

New England at Miami (CBS Spokane/Seattle/Minneapolis/Detroit/Burlington/Boston, CTV Winnipeg/Northern Ontario/Kitchener/Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal/Atlantic, CKPR, CHEX, CKWS) – A long list of channels this will be on.  I don’t really understand this since the game means almost nothing.  Then you look at the other AFC games on early and you start to get why.  There is absolutely nothing of note early on in the AFC (for the most part).  Kind of sad really and I know the NFL hates that this happened.  Anyway, the biggest thing of note here is that New England can clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win or an Oakland loss.  Miami does have a shot at moving up into the #5 seed if they can beat the Pats and the Chiefs lose to the Chargers.  Unlikely but you never know.

Cleveland at Pittsburgh (CBS Cleveland) – The Steelers are locked into the #3 seed in the AFC and will probably host Miami next week.  The bigger issue here is the Browns (I can’t believe I just said that).  If the Browns win, and the Niners lose, then the Niners would pick first in the 2017 NFL Draft.  Any other scenario will have the Browns picking first.  If I were Hue Jackson I would put out all my backups for this one.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – This game means absolutely nothing.  I hope the Jags, for their sake, have realized that Blake Bortles is probably not the guy no matter how much they want him to be.  Also, there is a possibility Tom Coughlin could be coming back to coach them.  That would be very interesting to say the least.

Buffalo at NY Jets (CBS Buffalo/Rochester, TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5) – The Flutie Curse continues!  Super Ryan Bros. have now been shitcanned.  Expected.  What wasn’t expected was the brass making sure Tyrod Taylor sat out the final game of the season.  It is to ensure that Taylor doesn’t get injured which would activate a $27.5 million clause in Tyrod’s contract.  And they made poor Anthony Lynn do the press conference to tell the media this.  What a joke.  I hope Lynn gets a job elsewhere and leaves this organization which just simply doesn’t get it.  Such a shitshow in Western New York.

Houston at Tennessee (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – I don’t know why you’d watch this game even if you had RedZone or Sunday Ticket.  The Texans are locked into the #4 seed (And I hate the fact that a division winner with a not-so-good record automatically gets a home game.  Such garbage.).  And the Titans don’t have Marcus Mariota for this one since he fractured his fibula last week.

Baltimore at Cincinnati (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – The Bengals are such a disappointment.  They should have, at least, been a Wild Card team.  How Marvin Lewis is keeping his job is beyond me.

Dallas at Philadelphia (FOX all affiliates except Minneapolis, CTV BC/Alberta/Saskatchewan, CITL) – Another game that means nothing.  Then again, Tony Romo is starting.  Cue a few in the NFL media talking about a quarterback controversy by Sunday night if Romo plays well.

Carolina at Tampa Bay (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – This game screams hilarious to me.  The scoreboard watching will be nuts.  Here is what has to happen for the Tampa Bay Football Buccaneers to make the playoffs:

  1. The Bucs have to beat the Panthers.
  2. Indianapolis has to beat Jacksonville.
  3. Tennessee has to beat Houston.
  4. Dallas has to beat Philadelphia.
  5. San Francisco must defeat Seattle.
  6. Green Bay has to lose to Detroit. And finally…
  7. Washington and the Giants have to tie. TIE!

It will be glorious if after the early games, the top four things happen.  This would mean the football talking heads would explode with glee with this distinct possibility.  If all this happens and the Bucs somehow get into the playoffs, I will go out and buy a lottery ticket IMMEDIATELY after the final game because it would be a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

Chicago at Minnesota (FOX Minneapolis) – People in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario that get FOX out of Minneapolis should be at least a bit upset.  This game will not be fun to watch I am sure.

Late

Oakland at Denver (all CBS affiliates, CTV Winnipeg/Northern Ontario/Kitchener/Toronto/Ottawa/Montreal, CTV Two Atlantic, CHEX, CKPR, CKWS) – A big game here for the Raiders.  A win and they clinch the AFC West and a first round bye.  A KC loss also does the same thing.  A win and a Patriots loss will also give Oakland home field advantage throughout the playoffs, something they may sorely need now that MVP candidate Derek Carr is out for the season.  What a huge blow to a team going to the playoffs for the first time in fifteen years.

Kansas City at San Diego (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – The Chiefs need a win and an Oakland loss to get the AFC West crown.  Also, they have to avoid losing because if they do and somehow the Dolphins beat the Patriots, the Chiefs will drop to the #6 seed and have to go to Pittsburgh instead of Houston in the Wild Card round.  Yeah I’d want to avoid that too.  This also could be the last NFL game ever in San Diego.  Where will the Chargers go?  Probably Los Angeles but it feels like no one wants this team to be honest.

NY Giants at Washington (FOX Minneapolis/Detroit/Buffalo/Rochester/Burlington/Boston, TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5) – The Giants are locked into the #5 spot no matter what.  The Redskins, on the other hand, are playing for their playoff lives.  If the Skins win, they are in unless the Packers-Lions game ends in a tie.  If, for some reason, this game ends in a tie, they would have to hope for losses by the Packers and Bucs.  Either way, this game is very important for Washington.

New Orleans at Atlanta (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – The Falcons are in the driver’s seat for a first round bye.  If they win, it’s academic.  If they don’t, they can still get in in the following ways:

  • A tie and a Seattle loss or tie
  • A Seattle loss and a Detroit loss or tie
  • A Seattle tie and a Detroit loss

This is what happens when we have ties earlier on in the season.  Most of the playoff scenarios have to involve ties.  Oh well, I would be shocked if the Falcons didn’t get the bye but stranger things have happened.

Arizona at Los Angeles (RedZone/Sunday Ticket only) – If you thought the Bengals were a disappointment, they were amazing compared to the Cardinals.  This is a team that had Super Bowl contender written all over it.  And they have looked awful this year.  Don’t know where they go from here but it will be very interesting to see if they go with the same crew next year and try and make another run or make some significant changes.  As for LA, the first season back in southern California was a joke.  They have to get better or else that brand new stadium will be an albatross around the franchise’s neck.

Seattle at San Francisco (FOX Tacoma/Seattle/Spokane, CTV BC/Alberta/Saskatchewan, CITL) – Basically the Seahawks would need a win and an Atlanta loss to get that first round bye.  As for the 49ers, if they lose and the Browns somehow win, they get the first overall pick in the draft.  Otherwise, they are stuck at #2.

Primetime

Green Bay at Detroit (NBC, TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5) – Easily the game of the week.  This one decides the NFC North.  I would feel bad for the Lions if they missed the playoffs after how they were doing at the three-quarter mark of the season.  They looked like a lock.  Since then it has been pretty painful to watch.  Detroit would have no one to blame but themselves if they missed the playoffs.

So there you go.  All games on Sunday.  Should be interesting for sure.  More bowl games today.  Five of them to be exact including the Orange Bowl on in primetime.  Then tomorrow is the College Football Playoff semi-finals.  Enjoy the games everyone!

I love seeing this – Week 15 NFL Recap

andy-reid

I love what happened during the Titans-Chiefs game.  Icing the kicker really annoys me.  Like REALLY annoys me.  The worst part is it’s not like it makes a huge difference.  According to ESPN Stats & Information kickers hit a field goal 81% of the time when a timeout is not called and only 76% when they are iced.  It’s only a 5% difference.  Not significant enough at all.  So Andy Reid hit the daily double this time around.  He iced Ryan Succop and Succop missed the first attempt.  Then Succop tries again and hits it for the Titans win.  Awesome.

Other tidbit of information from the past weekend:

  • Did anyone watch the Thursday Night Special Saturday Night Football game? Why call it Thursday Night Football?  It’s dumb.  Hell, the Jets couldn’t even fill half the stadium it seemed.  That’s because they suck but it’s beside the point.
  • The Bears had the Packers on the ropes. They HAD THEM!  And they let them off the hook.  Ah, Dennis Green you magnificent man.  Sorely missed.  Anyway, I was so hoping the Bears would win.  I want a pissed off Packers team next season to destroy the league.  Not a Packers team that sneaks into the playoffs because the Lions have a brutal schedule to finish the year.  Look at who the Lions have to play.  They played (and lost) to the Giants on Sunday, then they have the Cowboys and then the Packers.    Thanks a lot Senor Schedulerino.
  • Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrock Osweiler gets yanked for Tom Savage against Jacksonville (JACKSONVILLE!) and the Texans crowd cheers.   I don’t blame Osweiler here.  If you had a huge contract laid before you and you were getting a good chunk of that money no matter how well you played, wouldn’t you sign it?  Of course you would.  I blame Texans’ management for this.  Which is apropos because the Texans have never shown they can put a solid team together.  They’re like a Texas version of the Bills this century.  Oh and Gus Bradley got shitcanned.  Worst record EVER for a coach with over 50 games coached.  Also, they can just quit it with the Blake Bortles experiment?  He isn’t that great.  Period.  Time to move on.  Draft Mitch Trubisky and start over.
  • The Cleveland Browns lost again. I will be shocked if they win a game this season.  Just tear it all down and start over.  And for Joe Thomas’s sanity, trade him.
  • Remember when I said Minnesota was an elite team earlier in the season? No?    Well for the few who do remember, boy was I wrong.  Holy crap have they ever imploded.  So now Sam Bradford isn’t the answer at quarterback, Adrian Peterson might be finally on the downward swing of his career, and, well I could go on and on.  Things aren’t too rosy in the Twin Cities right now.
  • Man does NBC love them some Cowboys. This past Sunday was the second of three games in a row on Sunday Night Football.  Then again, when you play the Giants, Bucs, and Lions in consecutive weeks, you are bound to get a good timeslot.  I just wish they would move them to the late FOX game one week just for variety’s sake.

Alright, let’s look at the playoff picture as of this moment:

AFC NFC
Division Champs Division Champs
1 New England (East) 1 Dallas (East)
2 Oakland (West) 2 Seattle (West)
3 Pittsburgh (North) 3 Atlanta (South)
4 Houston (South) 4 Detroit (North)
Wild-Cards Wild-Cards
5 Kansas City 5 NY Giants
6 Miami 6 Green Bay

In the AFC, the Pats and Raiders are in.  The Chiefs are pretty much in as well.  Somehow Miami has snuck into the last playoff spot for now.  The AFC North is between the Steelers and Ravens and the AFC South is a three-team race.  Denver is the only other team that can make noise there.  The Bills aren’t mathematically eliminated but too much has to happen for them to qualify for the playoffs.

In the NFC, Dallas is WAY out in front.  Seattle is also in and the Giants are pretty much in as well.  Atlanta holds a one-game lead on the Bucs and we all know what’s going on with Detroit and Green Bay. New Orleans and Carolina are basically out without it being official.  Minnesota is close to that point as well.  At the very least we should have a great Week 17.

Bowl game tonight.  Not in the afternoon but tonight.  It’s the Boca Raton Bowl between Memphis and Western Kentucky.  For all you fans of offense, this game is for you.  Enjoy the game (if you choose to watch it).

OK so what in the hell is going on in Los Angeles? – Week 14 NFL Recap

jeff-fisher-coaching-philosophy

So let me get this straight.  The Rams give Jeff Fisher a two-year contract extension not even a couple weeks ago and then they fire him not long after?  What did they not believe they could get to 7-9 so they figured might as well pull the trigger?  What is this horseshit?  I think the Rams are trying to outdo the Browns in terms of franchise dysfunction.  This is not a good look for the first season of professional football back in Los Angeles.  Well, at least they have USC…and a new stadium that will cost taxpayers a new mortgage each.  Here’s an idea: don’t make everyone pay for a new stadium because at least 20% of those people will never be able to afford to go to a game.  So make the ticket prices higher for the first ten years and point out on the ticket the “fee” going towards the new stadium.  Oh, and have the NFL create a by-law that forces an owner to pay for a minimum percentage of the stadium.  If an owner has to front 50% of the cost it may stop this garbage of building new stadiums everywhere.  We all know stadium economic impact studies are based on bogus math and false stats.  Why stop fooling everyone?  Oh wait, that would be not greedy and that is certainly not what the NFL is all about.  Remember, (professional) Football is Family…a very rich family who wants the poors to prop them up.

Wow, that was not in the Christmas spirit at all.  So in keeping with this theme, the rest of this recap will be in AngryPost.  Let’s go.

  • People harp on Jeff Fisher being the King of Mediocrity. Has anyone checked the Bills?  This team is almost ALWAYS between 6 and 9 wins.  Since they last went to the playoffs they have been outside of this range all of three times.  THREE TIMES in SIXTEEN SEASONS!  Rex Ryan is almost guaranteed to be fired and it’s starting to look like maybe Tyrod Taylor is not the quarterback of the future.  Not fun times in Buffalo…unless you’re at the tailgate outside.  The Bills Mafia need their own 30 for 30 short film like yesterday.
  • Andy Reid and his glorious mustache are now on top of the AFC West.   Last thing anyone wants is the top contender to the Patriots to be a team that loves to choke in the playoffs.
  • I sincerely hope the Raiders do make it to the Super Bowl basically as one big F-U to the NFL. That organization refuses to follow protocol, tries to break the rules, has the ugliest owner in the league (which is a feat in itself), wants to move to Vegas, and is the least-disciplined team by far.  It would make the Super Bowl (and the lead up to it) glorious.
  • The Browns lost again. I should just copy and paste this into the next three posts now.
  • The Lions came back to win again. Then again it was just the Bears but still.  OK a Raiders-Lions Super Bowl is what I want because I think Commissioner Gingerhammer and the league brass would secretly hate it.
  • Speaking of shitty teams, have there ever been this many shitty teams in one season? Let’s go through them shall we?
    • Cleveland – A trainwreck of epic proportions. There had to have been only about 20,000 fans at the game on Sunday.  Talk about pathetic.
    • Los Angeles – I have gone through their shit above. Bad first season in LA.
    • Jacksonville – I think it’s time to realize that Blake Bortles is no better than a good backup and that’s it. He will never be an elite starter.
    • NY Jets – The Jets S-U-C-K, SUCK, SUCK, SUCK. Todd Bowles is an awful head coach and the team is in disarray.  And they will probably get the fourth pick of the draft despite their ineptitude.
    • San Francisco – Their game against the Jets was a close one that went to overtime. It was actually pretty exciting.  I think 10,000 fans saw it.  For such a supposedly nice stadium, very few people are experiencing it.  And is Chip Kelly now regretting not going back to the college game?
    • Chicago – The Minions of the Midway are awful and for god’s sake just let Jay Cutler go already. The joke is played out.
  • So six teams out of 32 are awful. Not just below-average…awful.  Almost 20% of the teams.  And we wonder why less people were watching the NFL.  Would you watch a game with any of these teams involved?
  • The Tennessee Titans are going to win the AFC South aren’t they? I guess it would be new blood and light years better than watching Amish Manning and the Colts or Cyborg J.J. Watt and his Texans in the playoffs.
  • Oh and Green Bay is going to come back and make the playoffs aren’t they? I kind of wish they wouldn’t so they could come back next year and tear through the league like a wet paper bag because they’re pissed the fuck off.
  • The Patriots are not likable. Without Gronk, they are insufferable.  And Pats fans are as well.  Well, most of them at least.  It’s refreshing to find the Pats fan who seems normal and doesn’t act like some Boston-area shitbag.
  • So the Cowboys have found their kryptonite. The Giants defense.  So all it took was a guy with a blown-up hand and the Cowboys offense turns into…well, the Browns offense.

Alright, let’s look at the playoff picture quickly.

AFC NFC
Division Champs Division Champs
1 New England (East) 1 Dallas (East)
2 Kansas City (West) 2 Detroit (North)
3 Pittsburgh (North) 3 Seattle (West)
4 Houston (South) 4 Atlanta (South)
Wild-Cards Wild-Cards
5 Oakland 5 NY Giants
6 Denver 6 Tampa Bay

The six teams I mentioned above are obviously mathematically eliminated.  You can also include another six teams who are pretty much eliminated (San Diego, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Arizona, New Orleans, Carolina).  So only eight teams left vying for five spots in the NFC.  As per usual, the AFC is more wide open.  Denver seems to be in trouble and who the hell knows what will happen with the AFC Dirty South but the rest of the teams are almost locks.

Done.  No more.  I love Christmas but at the same time I kind of hate Christmas.  A love-hate relationship with the holiday I guess.  I wasn’t as angry as I figured I would be but not nearly as optimistic as any sane, rational person would be.  Let’s call it a wash.

Tomorrow I will either post the bowl schedule or the bowl rankings.  This all hinges on TSN’s ability to get their shit together.  Funny how they can post the ENTIRE World Juniors schedule that goes into the first week of January yet they can’t figure out the bowl game schedule where all of the games except one are done by January 2nd.  I just don’t get it.

And you thought my college football picks were bad (NFL prediction time!)

nfl

Taking a break from the college football predictions (before my bowl game and Heisman picks) to look at the pro game…you know, the one Johnny Flip-the-Bird  is in.  Normally my NFL predictions aren’t that great but last year I predicted a Denver-Seattle Super Bowl so everyone can suck it (don’t look at the fact I picked the Broncos to win or that they had to beat Houston to get there).

I do the NFL predictions in much the same way I do my college football predictions; by playing out the season.  I usually adjust game outcomes that I think will go the other way and tally up the results.  I will now list the standings as I see them for this season (*means wild card spot):

AFC East NFC East
New England Philadelphia
Miami NY Giants
NY Jets Washington
Buffalo Dallas
AFC North NFC North
Baltimore Green Bay
Pittsburgh* Chicago*
Cincinnati Detroit
Cleveland Minnesota
AFC South NFC South
Indianapolis New Orleans
Tennessee Atlanta
Jacksonville Tampa Bay
Houston Carolina
AFC West NFC West
Denver Seattle
San Diego* San Francisco*
Kansas City Arizona
Oakland St. Louis

There shouldn’t be a lot of turn-around from last season when it comes to playoff teams.  For once parity isn’t rearing its head in the NFL.  The changes would be as follows:

  • Baltimore to replace Cincinnati as AFC North champ
  • Pittsburgh to replace Kansas City as a wild-card team
  • New Orleans to replace Carolina as NFC South champ
  • Chicago to replace New Orleans as a wild-card team

I have Cincinnati and Kansas City just missing out on the post-season in the AFC and Arizona and the New York Giants just missing out on the post-season in the NFC.

Other predictions about the regular season:

  • Blake Bortles (JAX), Johnny Manziel (CLE), Teddy Bridgewater (MIN), Derek Carr (OAK) and even Tom Savage (HOU) will have at least one start at QB this season and I see at least two of them being the undisputed starter by the end of the season.
  • Drew Brees could break many quarterback records this season as the NFL drifts towards being a mainly passing league (much like the CFL).
  • I have the Raiders winning three games this season and that might even be a stretch.  Expect them to be on the clock once the season ends.  Question is, do they take Mariota or Winston despite the fact they already have Carr or do they look elsewhere.
  • I see Dallas also being awful.  Ginger head coach Jason Garrett will most certainly be gone along with most of his staff.  Whether there is an overhaul elsewhere remains to be seen (the possibility to draft Mariota or Famous Jameis to replace Playboy Tony Romo?).
  • Cleveland will probably win five or six games.  I truly do believe that if you put some talent around Johnny Great Lakes, this team should at least contend for a wild-card spot.
  • The Buffalo Bon Jovis (or is it the Buffalo Pegulas?) will also get either five or six wins.  Calls for the release of EJ Manuel should start by Canadian Thanksgiving.
  • Biggest drop should be in Carolina.  I can’t see them continuing the way they played last year, especially with the Saints and Bucs improving, and the Falcons can’t possibly be as brutal as they were last year.

My next post will outline my playoff predictions but at least you know we are not looking at Johnny Rock Star grinding up against Rihanna’s ass during the Super Bowl halftime show while doubling as the Browns’ quarterback during the game itself…because the Browns still suck.

And the American Conference wonders why they were lumped in with the (Poor) Group of Five

American-Athletic-Conference-Logobig_east_conference

Saying the American conference just seems wrong.  Then again, the Big East royally fucked everything up so you have to give them credit for ruining a (relatively) good thing.  Anyway…

The Big American East Athletic Conference seriously wonders why they were left out in the cold?  Like seriously?  What team in this hodge-podge of a conference evokes a lot of fear in anyone?  It seems like every other poor (FBS) conference has a team that could make a shit-ton of noise this year.  This conference?  Not so much.  Amazingly enough, once Navy joins next year, this conference will all of a sudden look a whole lot better and have the golden ticket…a conference championship game.  That seems to elevate a conference for some reason.  If you don’t think so, look at the shit the Big XII takes from the college football world for not having one.  Anyway, another rant I need to end now.  Prediction time.

  1. Cincinnati Bearcats (8-0 conference, 10-2 overall) – If there is any team in this conference that seems complete enough to sneak their way into the College Football Playoff Spectacular El Fantastico, it’s the Bearcats.  Great head coach and a QB named Gunner.  What could go wrong?  How about Ohio State and Miami for starters.
  2. East Carolina Pirates (7-1 conference, 9-3 overall) – First season in the former Big East and the Pirates are expecting big things.  The Carden & Hardy show is no comedy routine and they should absolutely shred most of the defenses in the American.  Their slim chances of getting into the CFP Festival probably come down to November 13th in Cincinnati.
  3. UCF Knights (7-1 conference, 9-3 overall) – There is no way UCF can replace Blake Bortles and Storm Johnson this season.  That being said, they are the deepest team in the conference and they don’t have to play Cincy.  However, with Penn State and BYU on the non-conference sked and a trip to Greenville to face the Pirates, this won’t be as easy as last season for the Fighting O’Learys.
  4. SMU Mustangs (5-3 conference, 6-6 overall) – The June Jones Experience rolls on in Dallas…kind of.  Roll is such a strong word unless the tires are underinflated.  This team should be awesome on offense, not just pretty good.  June Jones’ staple is pass-happy insanity and they haven’t quite had it in MustangLand.  Maybe they should just start playing in the spring instead.
  5. Houston Cougars (5-3 conference, 8-4 overall) – New stadium and a new hope in Houston.  Unfortunately, the Cougs don’t have the kindest of schedules as they get UCF and Cincy and play BYU in the non-conference sked (it seems like BYU plays almost everyone this season).  They will go bowling this season but wait until next year as John O’Korn matures at QB and they contend for a league title.
  6. Tulane Green Wave (4-4 conference, 5-7 overall) – Talk about a shock last season.  To see Tulane (TULANE!!?!!??!!?) in a bowl game seemed like an LSD-induced dream.  Having them almost knock off the Ragin Cajuns in New Orleans was even crazier.  Curtis Johnson has this team on the right track but I expect a step back this year, mainly due to their non-conference schedule.  Their chances at a bowl might actually come down to a game early on when they travel to New Jersey to play Rutgers.
  7. Memphis Tigers (3-5 conference, 4-8 overall) – This program just can’t seem to get back over the hump.  It’s like they’re stuck at 4 wins.  Like a Bizarro World Bo Pelini.  Doesn’t help that they don’t get a break almost anywhere on their entire schedule.  If they somehow make it to a bowl, they will have earned it.
  8. Temple Owls (2-6 conference, 3-9 overall) – I figured that the Owls would be one of the upper tier teams in the American once realignment took its course.  All they’ve done is watched Houston and SMU pass them and they will watch East Carolina, Tulane, and probably Memphis pass them as well.  When Navy joins next season it will just get worse for a team that was kicked out of this conference (kinda sorta) years ago.
  9. USF Bulls (1-7 conference, 2-10 overall) – Poor Willie Taggart.  It appeared to the naked eye that he was coming into a decent situation at USF.  Unfortunately, it has been the exact opposite for the former WKU head coach.  He is banking on his strong recruiting skills to get this program back on track.  He may not have a whole lot of time to show some tangible results as his seat just keeps getting hotter.
  10. Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-7 conference, 2-10 overall) – Another one of the chic picks to have a turnaround season, I just can’t see how Tulsa can climb the ladder in their new conference when there are other teams that have passed them by.  And it’s not like their schedule is really brutal this season but it’s tough enough for a team that lacks depth.  Next year should be the year they make their move up the standings but it won’t happen this year.
  11. Connecticut Huskies (1-7 conference, 3-9 overall) – Poor Bob Diaco.  He’s being touted as a quasi-savior in Storrs that will bring the Huskies back to contending in this conference.  He is a brilliant defensive mind who should, at least, start the process of shoring up the Huskies brutal defense.  But they are at least two years and a good recruiting class or two away from contending.  Let’s hope administration at UConn gives Diaco that chance.

No conference championship for the American conference but that ends this season.  Next year, Navy joins the fold, we get a conference championship and a chance for a conference team to play their way into the CFP Bowlarama (or play their way out of it as so many teams have before in the old BCS).  Cincinnati has come up as a pick by a few magazines and experts as the Poor Group of Five pick to go play with the big boys in January.  As good as they are, and even though I also have them winning this conference, there is no way they can compete with what Marshall’s resume will be this season, especially with the difference in schedules; the Bearcats have a pretty competitive schedule whereas the Herd have a joke of a schedule.  That will be the difference.

So how’d I do? 2014 NFL Draft edition.

Finally the first round of the draft came and went.  I was seriously getting sick of the hype leading up to it.  Goodell, please put it back in April.  Then again, watching the first round made me realize how much I truly miss football and that is a lot.

So how did I do with my predictions?  I am no Mel Kiper (I look way better than that guy) or Mike Mayock (who I think is a better analyst than Kiper) but I thought I would have a pretty good handle on how the first round would play out.  Well, not so fast bro…here are the results comparing my final mock to the actual results:

As you can see, a complete shitshow.  I had the first three right and five of the first seven and probably would have had six if the Bills hadn’t traded up to get Watkins.  After that, nothing.  Not even close in some cases.  Here’s some quick analysis on the first round:

Best Prediction on my part

Easy.  Having Bortles as the top QB, first QB picked, and going #3 to the Jags when many had him being the second or third QB picked and much lower in the draft.

Worst Prediction on my part

Where do I begin?  I should have had Mack higher, especially once almost everyone started moving him up in their mocks.  I was fooled, yet again, into putting too many QBs too high up in the first round.  This time it was Teddy Ballgame falling all the way to 32nd from 8th (but still going to the same team so….yay?).

Best Value pick

The Bengals somehow getting Darqueze Dennard at 24 was an honest shocker.  I thought he may go higher but when Justin Gilbert came off the board at 8, I started to wonder where Dennard would fit.

Worst Value picks

Yes picks.  As in plural.  There were a few misfires in the first round.

  • Pittsburgh reached big time for Kyle Fuller, especially when Dennard AND Ha Ha Clinton-Dix were still available.  Good player but not worth a #14 pick.
  • Miami inexplicably picking Jawuan James.  Cyrus Kouandjio is still on the board (and still waiting…) and they pick James?  Flat-out bad pick.
  • Cleveland trading down and then picking Gilbert instead of Dennard at #8.

Best move

This is a tie between the Bills moving up to get Sammy Watkins and the Browns trading up to get Manziel.  Buffalo now looks like the most sure team in the draft as they made a big move to get a guy they obviously wanted (especially since if they hadn’t done that, he would have likely gone to Oakland with the next pick).  Cleveland trading for a second time to get Manziel kind of makes up for the slight gaffe with the Gilbert pick.  They still get the guy that I thought they would get, except not at #4 but at #22.  Has to be considered a win.  Plus everyone loves them some Gianni Futbol.

Best/worst coverage

I watched mostly NFL Network coverage of the first round with some periodical moves over to ESPN.  I can honestly say that the NFL Network, overall, has better coverage.  I believe Mike Mayock is a better analyst than Mel Kiper and not as arrogant.  Rich Eisen is a much better host, in this format, than Chris Berman who needs to stick to home-run contests and NFL Sunday mornings.  One thing I wasn’t big on was the fact that the NFL Network crowded five guys into the main desk.  I rarely heard Steve Mariucci and didn’t think much of Michael Irvin’s analysis.  I would have put those two elsewhere in the coverage and left Eisen, Mayock, and Marshall Faulk (who did a fantastic job) at the main desk.

Best players available

Three players come to mind:

  • Derek Carr – Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Texans open the second round by picking David’s younger brother.
  • Marqise Lee – I am surprised he didn’t go before Kelvin Benjamin but he should still be an early second-round pick.
  • Kony Ealy – Here’s a guy who seemed to rocket up the draft board and has now fallen back off it.  Wouldn’t shock me to see him wait until the end of the second round tonight.

So much draft coverage this weekend along with a shit-ton of slopitch (opening weekend!) means I will be busy.  Not a bad thing.  I will be doing a grade for all the teams at some point next week.

Final Mock NFL Draft…Version 3? Sure, let’s call it Version 3.

First off, long time no see.  I haven’t posted in over a month.  Nothing much to talk about.  And I really am getting sick of the spring game hype.  First off, very few people actually watch these glorified scrimmages.  Second, Canadians (other than those who can get the Big Ten Network) will see all of none of the games.  Finally, I think Pitt (and perhaps a couple other schools) were right to just cancel the damn thing.  The potential for injury is high in a game situation and why do that to a potential starter or blue-chipper?  Soon enough I will start getting my college football preview magazines (Phil Steele of course along with one or two others) and predicting the season.  I have already started mapping out what the college football television schedule will look like for us here in the Great White North (just sung the MacKenzie brothers theme song 🙂  ).  I know this will change as the season goes on but it’s nice to have a good idea of what we will see.  Still waiting word on how the SEC Network will play out in Canada.  My hope is that it is added to the specialty packs (along with games on ESPNews) for this season.  It would give us a fairly full complement of games each week.  Now for those pesky FOX network games…

Alright, my final kick at the can at this draft.  This is my final mock 2014 NFL draft.  Version 3.  Or C.  Whatever.

Anyway, this won’t be correct.  I’m sure of it.  Trades will take place.  My only hope is that the trade doesn’t matter to the player I selected at that slot.  So here we go:

Pick No. Team Predicted Selection
1 HOU Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
2 STL Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
3 JAX Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
4 CLE Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
5 OAK Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
6 ATL Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
7 TB Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
8 MIN Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
9 BUF Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
10 DET Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
11 TEN Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
12 NYG Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
13 STL Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama
14 CHI Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
15 PIT Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
16 DAL Kony Ealy, DT, Missouri
17 BAL Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
18 NYJ Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
19 MIA Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame
20 AZ Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
21 GB Jimmie Ward, SS, Northern Illinois
22 PHI Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
23 KC Marqise Lee, WR, USC
24 CIN C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
25 SD Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame
26 CLE Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
27 NO Dee Ford, DE, Auburn
28 CAR Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia
29 NE David Yankey, OG, Stanford
30 SF Kyle Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech
31 DEN Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
32 SEA Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech

As you can see, I finally launched myself off the “Bortles to Houston” bandwagon.  There seems to be just too much interest on the Texans’ part in Jadeveon Clowney.  I hope for their sake he doesn’t turn out to be a bust as it could haunt this franchise for a long time if he is.  Despite what most draft experts think, I still believe Bortles will be the first QB off the board as he heads upstate to Jacksonville.  I don’t believe Bortles will make it to #8, nor do I believe the Vikes would pass up Bridgewater for Derek Carr.  To me it seems Justin Gilbert, Morgan Moses, and Ryan Shazier have moved up the list the most with many, including myself, putting Gilbert in the top 10.  A potential drop for one of the Blocking Kouandjio brothers could mean a huge pick up for Denver if he does drop to #31 and into the Broncos’ lap.  Many believe he will fall right out of the first round and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that happened.

As for potential trades, there is no way the Texans part with the #1 pick.  Too risky I think.  I could see Atlanta or Tampa Bay trade out of the top 10, or perhaps see Arizona trade into the top 10 to get a better QB (although I think Derek will be much better at the NFL level than his brother David ever was).  This has been one of the weirdest buildups to a draft considering there still isn’t a consensus #1 pick and I have seen as many as 24 different players in the top 10 in various mock drafts.  It means it should be a bit more exciting since we really don’t know what is going to happen until it happens.

I have my PVR set.  I have chosen the NFL Network since I believe their coverage is slightly better than ESPN’s (plus I mildly prefer the analysts on NFLN over the ESPN ones).  Looking forward to this since I’m anxious for football of any kind to start soon (except Arena Football, that stuff is borderline awful…although I guess it did give us Kurt Warner in a way).

Update: Instead of doing a full post on this, I will just add this blurb here.  TSN is going from two to FIVE CHANNELS in the fall!  Holy crap!  Will they be undoubtedly filled with useless garbage?  Perhaps.  However, one of the notes on this announcement is that they will show more ESPN programming, including college sports, which, invariably, means college football.  So we may see more college football on TSN this season than any season in the past which is great for Canadian NCAA football fans.

Alright another kick at the can…Mock Draft Version 2

Ok this is my second attempt at this.  I will include my V1 picks as well for compare and contrast.

Pick No. Team Expected Pick (Version 1) Expected Pick (Version 2)

31 DEN Jason Verrett, CB, TCU Stephon Tuitt, DE, Notre Dame
32 SEA David Yankey, OG, Stanford Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech

So a few movements up and down the list highlighted by:

  • Jake Matthews (6 to 2)
  • Greg Robinson (12 to 6)
  • Sammy Watkins (5 to 13)
  • Aaron Donald (22 to 16)
  • Kony Ealy (11 to 22)

Matthews and Robinson seem like they could be almost interchangeable although I still see Matthews being selected first.  I was always wary to put Watkins in the top 5 and moving him out felt right.  As did Ealy’s drop as I never really saw him as an almost-top-10 pick despite the fact many mock drafts had him there.  A few players dropped out of the first round, most notably Kelvin Benjamin falling from 18.  I have a feeling now that receivers won’t be in demand as much as I thought they were in my V1.  As for the top five, Clowney, Bridgewater, and Manziel each drop one spot as Matthews moves in as the #2 pick to the Rams.  So a few major changes but nothing big as I still see Bortles going first overall to the Texans.  It would take something major to change my opinion on that.

In other news, Brent Musburger and Jesse Palmer are the new #1 broadcast team for the SEC Network.  We all knew Musburger was going there but Palmer is a bit of a surprise.  Now the question will be who will take over as the #1 ESPN/ABC broadcast crew and does Heather Cox join Musburger and Palmer at the SECN?  My guess is Cox does move over, but since Rece Davis is still doing Thursday nights with the Bachelor and POLLACK-SMASH, it opens the door for someone else to be the #1 crew with Kirk Herbstreit.  I figured it would have been Joe Tessitore but he will be with Tim Tebow, also on the SEC Network.  I think we will see one of Brad Nessler, Sean McDonough, or Chris Fowler coming out of the GameDay booth to call it, although part of me hopes they go a different direcion and go with Carter Blackburn, who is fantastic on Friday nights with Danny Kanell and Allison WIlliams.  Speaking of Williams, I would consider her a frontrunner for #1 sideline reporter along with Maria Taylor and Holly Rowe.  Again, going with someone a little younger and newer may be the way to go here so don’t be surprised if Shannon Spake gets the call.  Should be interesting over the next month or two as the dominoes start to fall with the Musburger/Palmer announcement.

V-3 Mock Draft to come sometime in April, although again I think there will be very few changes although I should try and highlight possible trades that could happen inside the first round.  Schedules are pretty much finalized so mapping out the broadcast season (at this way-too-early point) is possible.  Obviously things change based on team performances but at the very least, the most important games can be looked at.

Update:  Of course, as soon as I do this article, not even 24 hours later it is announced that Chris Fowler will take over the Saturday night play-by-play responsibilities for ESPN.  Sometimes I just need to be patient.

Mock NFL Draft Version 1.Something or other

Since so many other “experts” weigh in on the NFL draft I decided to give it a go, at least the first round for now.  The draft isn’t for almost three months (May 8 to be exact) but there will be a lot of rising and falling among the ranks for these players as the days tick down to the main event.  So right off the hop here’s my Mock NFL Draft (first round):

1 HOU Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
2 STL Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
3 JAX Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
4 CLE Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
5 OAK Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
6 ATL Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
7 TB Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
8 MIN Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
9 BUF Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
10 DET Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
11 TEN Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri
12 NYG Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
13 STL Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
14 CHI Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama
15 PIT Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
16 BAL Marqise Lee, WR, USC
17 DAL Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
18 NYJ Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
19 MIA Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
20 AZ Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame
21 GB C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
22 PHI Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
23 KC Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
24 CIN Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
25 SD Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
26 CLE Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
27 NO Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame
28 CAR Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
29 NE Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
30 SF Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
31 DEN Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
32 SEA David Yankey, OG, Stanford

I am firmly in the “Houston Texans need a QB Desperately” camp this off-season.  I believe Bortles is a more complete quarterback than Bridgewater although I’m sure you can interchange the two.  Either way, the Texans need a QB…badly.  As for the Rams, they don’t need a QB…or at least that’s what they want to tell you (I’m not completely sold on Sam Bradford but hey…).  So they will be the first team, and probably the only one in the first four or five, to not pick a quarterback.  I think it’s a foregone conculsion that Jadeveon Clowney will end up being a St.Louis (or Los Angeles) Ram.  The Jags get the QB the Texans don’t pick, leaving woeful Cleveland to get a chance to ruin Gianni Futbol’s chances of a great career by picking him to quarterback this sad, sad franchise.  Derek Carr should go in the top 10 as well (I have him 8th to Minnesota much to the chagrin of Samantha Steele-Ponder) but after that, no QBs until the second round.  Other notes:

  • I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bills pick Khalil Mack of UB to anchor their defense.  That would be a solid pick for them.
  • Does Oakland reach for Sammy Watkins at the 5-spot?  I think so despite the fact many mock drafts have him from 10 to 15.
  • Anthony Barr at 17 to Dallas would be the steal of the first round, in my estimation.  This guy has top 10 talent but many of the worse teams in the league need way more help on offense than defense.

Again, this is version, let’s call it 1.0.  I should just call it Version 1.  It’s not like I will be revising this thing every day.  I plan on taking another look at it again sometime in March.

Starting to gather information on the schedule for the next college football season.  At some point I will look at the most important games of the season and try to get an idea of what the TV schedules will be like in this neck of the woods.  It will be very interesting to see the fallout from the Rogers Super-Mega NHL Contract as it pertains to college football on television in Canada.
