Since so many other “experts” weigh in on the NFL draft I decided to give it a go, at least the first round for now. The draft isn’t for almost three months (May 8 to be exact) but there will be a lot of rising and falling among the ranks for these players as the days tick down to the main event. So right off the hop here’s my Mock NFL Draft (first round):
|HOU||Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
|STL||Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
|JAX||Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
|CLE||Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
|OAK||Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
|ATL||Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
|TB||Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
|MIN||Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
|BUF||Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
|DET||Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
|TEN||Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri
|NYG||Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
|STL||Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
|CHI||Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, FS, Alabama
|PIT||Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
|BAL||Marqise Lee, WR, USC
|DAL||Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
|NYJ||Kelvin Benjamin, WR, Florida State
|MIA||Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
|AZ||Zack Martin, OT, Notre Dame
|GB||C.J. Mosley, ILB, Alabama
|PHI||Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
|KC||Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU
|CIN||Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
|SD||Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
|CLE||Allen Robinson, WR, Penn State
|NO||Louis Nix III, DT, Notre Dame
|CAR||Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
|NE||Jace Amaro, TE, Texas Tech
|SF||Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State
|DEN||Jason Verrett, CB, TCU
|SEA||David Yankey, OG, Stanford
I am firmly in the “Houston Texans need a QB Desperately” camp this off-season. I believe Bortles is a more complete quarterback than Bridgewater although I’m sure you can interchange the two. Either way, the Texans need a QB…badly. As for the Rams, they don’t need a QB…or at least that’s what they want to tell you (I’m not completely sold on Sam Bradford but hey…). So they will be the first team, and probably the only one in the first four or five, to not pick a quarterback. I think it’s a foregone conculsion that Jadeveon Clowney will end up being a St.Louis (or Los Angeles) Ram. The Jags get the QB the Texans don’t pick, leaving woeful Cleveland to get a chance to ruin Gianni Futbol’s chances of a great career by picking him to quarterback this sad, sad franchise. Derek Carr should go in the top 10 as well (I have him 8th to Minnesota much to the chagrin of Samantha Steele-Ponder) but after that, no QBs until the second round. Other notes:
- I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bills pick Khalil Mack of UB to anchor their defense. That would be a solid pick for them.
- Does Oakland reach for Sammy Watkins at the 5-spot? I think so despite the fact many mock drafts have him from 10 to 15.
- Anthony Barr at 17 to Dallas would be the steal of the first round, in my estimation. This guy has top 10 talent but many of the worse teams in the league need way more help on offense than defense.
Again, this is version, let’s call it 1.0. I should just call it Version 1. It’s not like I will be revising this thing every day. I plan on taking another look at it again sometime in March.
Starting to gather information on the schedule for the next college football season. At some point I will look at the most important games of the season and try to get an idea of what the TV schedules will be like in this neck of the woods. It will be very interesting to see the fallout from the Rogers Super-Mega NHL Contract as it pertains to college football on television in Canada.
