You asked for it (I think). So here it is. The 2023 Bowl Game TV Schedule in HIGH DEFINITION!!!

Does anyone say that anymore? That something is in high definition (or the now-even cringier term, High Def)? Feels very 2008-ish.

TSN seems to always deliver during bowl season. It’s funny how they absolutely don’t deliver at all during the rest of the season but with TSN+ they now have their very own built-in excuse to not have many games on the main five stations. Now, as I say every year, the TSN portion of the schedule could change so keep coming back for any updates.

Let’s not waste any more time. Bowl schedule. NOW!

Saturday December 16th

Myrtle Beach Bowl: Georgia Southern vs. Ohio11:00 AM

Thanks to issues with the Bahamas Bowl (that will be explained below if you don’t already know) Bowl Season begins on the eastern coast of South Carolina. This game pits two teams who were kind of forgotten in their conferences this season but quietly put together good seasons. Should be a good start to the college football postseason on the teal turf in Conway.

Celebration Bowl: Florida A&M vs. HowardNoon

It feels like many times this game features one team that could have caused some damage in the FCS playoffs and one team that scraped their way into this game. This year’s edition is no different. Florida A&M ran roughshod through most of its opponents whereas Howard barely won the MEAC. And as it usually happens, the not-so-good team gives the really good a team a run for their money and sometimes ends up winning. So don’t necessarily think this will be a blowout.

New Orleans Bowl: Louisiana vs. Jacksonville State2:15

Opening bowl day brings the return of RichRod to postseason competition. With the Cajuns already being there, this should at least have a raucous crowd and really, that’s a big part of the bowl experience. It’s great to see a bowl game with a great crowd as it just continues to prove that most of these bowl games mean something.

Cure Bowl: Appalachian State vs. Miami-OH3:30

What used to be the worst bowl game matchup almost every season is now being shown on ABC on opening bowl day. Great turnaround for the Cure Bowl for sure. I think we need to have more bowl games set up like this: where a good portion of the money goes to some sort of charity or towards some type of research. I think this way we can decrease the amount of people who think there are too many bowl games. I mean there will always be some that will hate it. I see their point but it’s more football. Would you prefer to take 35 minutes to find something worth watching on Netflix or Amazon Prime or would you rather watch LIVE FOOTBALL? It really shouldn’t be a choice to be honest (at least if you read this blog).

New Mexico Bowl: Fresno State vs. New Mexico State5:45

Time to watch America’s Team in this one. No, the Dallas Cowboys aren’t playing (and no, they aren’t America’s team and haven’t been since a year that started with a 1). The New Mexico State Aggies, coached by, arguably, the best coach in the land Jerry Kill, is now America’s Team. That’s unfortunate for the Fresno State Bulldogs who won’t have their head coach, Jeff Tedford, on the sideline. They have to face the Aggies in almost a quasi-home game for them. I want to say this won’t be close but the Bulldogs are pretty good so at the very least you should see a good game here. America’s Team. Now you know. And knowing’s half the battle…………………………………………GI JOE!!!!!!

LA Bowl: UCLA vs. Boise State7:30

For once, the Broncos had to grind to get to a bowl game. 5-5 with their head coach being shitcanned and they somehow win the Mountain West Championship. But now with no potential Chip Kelly drama, this game loses a lot of spots in the rankings.

Independence Bowl: Texas Tech vs. California9:15

Shreveport seems like an odd spot for two Power Five teams in their bowl game but that used to be the norm. Maybe the Independence Bowl should have been used in the new 12-team playoff somehow. I mean who says no, other than ESPN who would prefer to put every game in the biggest neutral site stadium they can find for MAXIMUM MONEY.

Monday December 18th

Famous Toastery Bowl: Old Dominion vs. WKU2:30

This will most likely be my favourite one-off bowl ever. Because of renovations at Thomas Robinson Stadium, the Bahamas Bowl could not be played on the island since there are no other stadiums able to hold the game there. Charlotte got the call and this game will be played at the 49ers’ home field and with a new sponsor, Famous Toastery. I don’t think it’s even famous at all in that area of the country but I like their confidence. I pray that the winning coach gets buried in a mountain of toast.

Tuesday December 19th

Frisco Bowl: UTSA vs. Marshall9:00

Frisco gets two postseason games: this one and then the FCS Championship. The FCS title game is there through at least next season but beyond that, who knows. The Frisco Bowl, on the other hand, is here to stay. At least we have two good Group of Five teams here and with UTSA not being too far away it may approach a sellout.

Thursday December 21st

Boca Raton Bowl: Syracuse vs. USF8:00

Back to grinding for bowl-eligibility, here are two teams that epitomized that. Syracuse, who has completely re-done their coaching staff and USF, whose close game with Bama earlier on in the season made the College Football Playoff debate that much worse. Look it’s either this or the Saints and the Rams on Amazon Prime. You know what to choose.

Friday December 22nd

Gasparilla Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. UCF6:30

Interesting start time for this game. I get that it’s only half-an-hour before games normally would start locally but why do that? Bizarre. This is probably the highest-profile matchup this bowl game has ever had and it should bring a good amount of fans with one team not too far from Tampa. Hey, at least’s it not at the Trop.

Saturday December 23rd

Birmingham Bowl: Duke vs. TroyNoon

This should be a good game and it’s the kind of game I always talk about. A Group of Five conference champion getting their shot at a Power Five team. That’s part of what bowl season should be all about and I have said that often in the past. Will college football listen to me? No. And it’s their loss.

Camellia Bowl: Arkansas State vs. Northern IllinoisNoon

Two teams that have got basically no coverage this season. I’m honestly surprised that no team looked at Butch Jones to be their new head coach. He’s brought ASU back from being horrible for both of Jones’ first two seasons (and Blake Anderson’s last in Jonesboro) to being respectable. I think the fact that the Sun Belt is so damn good now (in G-5 terms), this team gets overshadowed a lot.

Idaho Potato Bowl: Utah State vs. Georgia State3:30

Again, two teams who were overshadowed by a bunch of better teams in their respective conferences. Plus it’s on the blue turf and that’s always a bit of fun, especially if it’s freezing cold (OK not so much for the players and fans but hilarious for us viewers at home).

Armed Forces Bowl: Air Force vs. James Madison3:30

The Dukes in a bowl game! As it should be. And it shouldn’t have taken the lengths it did but luckily there weren’t enough 6-win teams to fill all the bowl slots. Air Force had a monumental collapse to end their season after being the Group of Five favourite to go to the New Year’s Six coming into November so momentum is not on their side.

68 Ventures Bowl: South Alabama vs. Eastern Michigan7:00

Chris Creighton has done amazing things in Ypsilanti. He has made EMU relevant for really the first time ever. As for South Alabama, it looked like they would be the Sun Belt’s darling this year after an early win over Oklahoma State. The bottom fell out for this team and they barely made it to bowling. Massive contrast of seasons here.

Las Vegas Bowl: Northwestern vs. Utah7:30

Northwestern and Utah aren’t exactly the fanbases I think of when I think of fans who could completely wreck hotel rooms and drink a bar dry…well, Utah maybe. Maybe that is by design. Have to give credit to a Northwestern team that should have been terrible and ended up doing quite well in the final Big Ten West season. And we will never know how good the Utes could have been with the injuries they had.

Hawaii Bowl: San Jose State vs. Coastal Carolina10:30

It’s the annual Stocking Stuffer Bowl where many parents finally fill the stockings of their children so that when they wake up they will know Santa (or some other fat white dude) came down the chimney (or more like through a window because he’s fat) to give them presents because…we as parents didn’t give them enough? Is that how the story goes? Anyway, I will enjoy a nice scotch after all that stocking stuffer stuff is done and watch some great football during a bowl that should start at one minute before Midnight on Spectrum Sports so most of the college football world has to scramble to find it.

Tuesday December 26th

Quick Lane Bowl: Minnesota vs. Bowling Green2:00

OK not exactly what I’ve always had in mind but still. It’s a G-5 team against a P-5 team. The P-5 team is in because they are smart. The G-5 team is in because the MAC, past the top three teams, was pretty bad this year. Advantage? The fans who get to watch college football on a weekday afternoon when you probably will be off work. Probably. For those who must work I hope you have a good PVR setup.

First Responder Bowl: Rice vs. Texas State5:30

Hey remember when this bowl game was cancelled because of weather? What a shitshow that was. I’d be surprised if they ever let that happen again considering the fallout. When it comes to this year’s First Responder Bowl, you have to like what you see in Texas State. In a really good Sun Belt, they were able to go 7-5 and get to their first bowl game ever. Tulsa is going to rue the day they decided not to hire G.J. Kinne as their coach. Rice, I believe, lucked out due to a much-less powerful AAC. Not to say they didn’t play well but I believe the Sun Belt, top to bottom, is the best Group of Five conference.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl: Kansas vs. UNLV9:00

This is why bowl games matter. UNLV is back in a bowl game for the first time in a decade thanks in large part to a guy who should have got more votes for Coach of the Year, Barry Odom. Speaking of guys who should have got Coach of the Year consideration, Lance Leipold has done wonders and the Jayhawks are doing everything they can to keep him in Lawrence. Big question for this game will be if Jalon Daniels will play after his somewhat mysterious back injury from earlier this year kept him out of action for most of the season.

Wednesday December 27th

Military Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Tulane2:00

Maybe we will see some snow for this one. Not gonna lie: VaTech was WAY the fuck better than I thought they would be. They did a masterful job in an ACC that, below FSU and Louisville, wasn’t that great. They will face a Tulane squad that just lost Willie Fritz to Houston. I know some teams struggle when their coach leaves before a bowl game and I could see that happening here.

Duke’s Mayo Bowl: North Carolina vs. West Virginia5:30

North Carolina with a big home advantage at the Mayo Bowl. In the end, though, that advantage means little. The game itself only means so much. No, what really matters, is who is going to get a big tub of mayo dumped on them, Mack Brown or Neal Brown? Either way, Duke’s Mayo is going to be down on Brown in this one………wait, that doesn’t sound right.

Holiday Bowl: #15 Louisville vs. USC8:00

Caleb Williams has opted out of this one. No surprise there. But they could be playing a team that, despite being ranked 15th in the nation, hasn’t exactly lit it up lately. Let’s see if Louisville can actually play a decent game for the first time in weeks after shitting the bed against Kentucky and looking mediocre against Florida State.

Texas Bowl: Texas A&M vs. #20 Oklahoma State9:00

Some classic Big XII action here. Cue the Big XII on FOX Sports Net music and get Joel Meyers back to call this one. The Aggies should be doubly pissed since the Pokes had a chance to knock those damn Longhorns off their perch and they couldn’t get it done. So now they have to watch Texas play in the College Football Playoff while the Aggies are in a decent bowl but one quite a ways down the pecking order.

Thursday December 28th

Fenway Bowl: Boston College vs. #24 SMU11:00 AM

Morning football at Fenway. See, morning football is fine if it bleeds into the afternoon. None of this 9:30 in the morning horseshit. I guess this could be considered the Ponies’ first ACC test as these two teams will be roommates next year.

Pinstripe Bowl: Rutgers vs. Miami2:15

I honestly think this will end up being a good game. I mean what’s not to like? OK there are probably a few things not to like, such as Mario Cristobal’s continued contract as head coach of the Miami football Hurricanes but I digress. It’s Rutgers football. In NYC. An old Big East matchup (I really wish the Big East was back…in football). I look forward to it, especially if there is some serious football weather that day.

Pop Tarts Bowl: #18 NC State vs. #25 Kansas State5:45

OK so get this. The mascot for the new Pop Tarts Bowl is, of course, a Pop Tart. So far, so uninteresting. Then everything goes off the rails when we are told that this will be the first edible mascot ever and that the winning team gets to eat it. What? I mean, hey, it’s got me interested just to see what absurdity will unfold after what should be one of the better non-CFP/non-NY6 bowl games.

Alamo Bowl: #12 Oklahoma vs. #14 Arizona9:15

Usually the Alamo Bowl gives us one of, if not the, best non-CFP/non-NY6 bowl matchups. This year is no exception. Oklahoma’s final ride in the Big XII before they head to the prosperous SEC. Jedd Fisch’s resurgent Arizona Wildcats who are looking to head to the Big XII next year with a lot of momentum. This feels like it will be a slobberknocker to quote good ol’ JR.

Friday December 29th

Gator Bowl: Kentucky vs. #22 ClemsonNoon

If Kentucky hadn’t beat Louisville I would have said this could end up being complete domination by the Tigers. It probably still will be but at least there feels like the Cats could have a fighting chance here.

Sun Bowl: #19 Oregon State vs. #16 Notre Dame2:00

This game sold out in about an hour or so. And all because of a random draw. All the bowls left with ACC tie-ins wanted Notre Dame so I guess they did the whole coin toss thing they did in Friday Night Lights or a no holds barred cage fight or whatever the fuck they do to figure these things out. The Sun Bowl won out. So for the last time that they get a Pac-12 team, one of the oldest bowl games around got the one with one of the most rabid fanbases and then got them paired with Notre Dame, the team whose fans travel, arguably, the best. OK I changed my mind…this is the best non-CFP/non-NY6 matchup. I’m starting to feel like Bobby Heenan changing my pick all the time.

Liberty Bowl: Iowa State vs. Memphis3:30

So Memphis is playing at home so this bowl game should have a great turnout. They will have to wait to get eyeballs on their game since the Sun Bowl will overlap the Liberty Bowl’s first half.

Cotton Bowl: #9 Missouri vs. #7 Ohio State8:00

Quite the prove-it game for a team that some still don’t feel truly belong in the SEC. This is the type of big time bowl game that people expect the Buckeyes to be in but the Tigers, not so much. This will be a definite contrast of styles. Missouri’s run game with one of the best running backs in the country, Cody Schrader going up against the Ohio State passing attack led by Marvin Harrison Jr. The absence of Kyle McCord, as average as he could be at times, could play a role here.

Saturday December 30th

Peach Bowl: #11 Ole Miss vs. #10 Penn StateNoon

Interesting matchup. Fans were making a myriad of arguments as to why one of these teams shouldn’t be in the New Year’s Six. And then both make it and get paired up down in Atlanta. No matter how some fans feel, a potential Top 10 season should cut down on the hate for both teams’ head coaches. It won’t but it should.

Music City Bowl: Auburn vs. Maryland2:00

Divisions in the Big Ten are going away. “Hooray” – Maryland. Washington, Oregon, USC and UCLA are joining the conference. “FUCK!” – Maryland. Hey Terps fans, look, it could be worse. You could be in the ACC, a conference that seems to be ready to join the Pac-12 in completely imploding.

Orange Bowl: #6 Georgia vs. #5 Florida State4:00

My brief thoughts on the whole Florida State/College Football Playoff situation is this: The Committee have no plans for anything. Everything is a knee-jerk reaction. Want proof? They knew what they were heading towards. They were going to have to make a decision between a Jordan Travis-less Noles team and two of Texas, Georgia or Alabama, depending on the outcomes on conference championship weekend. So what did they do in the final CFP rankings before that weekend? Have FSU at #4. They could have moved Oregon ahead of them instead into the #4 spot but didn’t. It set everything up for the chaos that occurred during Selection Sunday. Deep down I don’t really care who made it but if The Committee were more transparent and thought about things for more than two minutes then the anger would have been reduced immensely. But no, they fucked up and now FSU fans have a right to be furious. Anyway, I hope this game is at least close because otherwise SEC fans and talking head morons like Paul Finebaum will never let anyone hear the end of it.

One note about this game: it will start on TSN1 at about 6:30. My guess is that it will be because of a World Juniors game being aired at the same time as the start of the Orange Bowl but who knows since the tournament is in Sweden.

Arizona Bowl: Wyoming vs. Toledo4:00

Could this be an interesting game? Perhaps. Unfortunately, it will be overshadowed by two things: that this game is the first bowl game ever to appear on The CW and that it is sponsored by Barstool Sports. The game is also being called by Barstool personalities and seeing what it was like last year, they go overboard on certain things, especially the gambling aspect of college football. Not saying others don’t talk about it because they do but they beat you over the head with it all game. Oh well, you don’t have to watch if you don’t want to since the Orange Bowl is on at the exact same time (someone didn’t think this one through).

Monday January 1st

ReliaQuest Bowl: #13 LSU vs. WisconsinNoon

I have a feeling this game might not be that close. Wisconsin feels like a shell of Badger teams in the past. Then again, there have been crazier bowl results.

UPDATE: Looks like this bowl game is on TSN2 which is a bit surprising. This means no TSN+ and no specialty pack.

Fiesta Bowl: #8 Oregon vs. #23 Liberty1:00

This could be an big-time shootout if Liberty can keep up. Nice to see Conference USA finally get into the New Year’s Six for the first time. All it took was for a program that many people do not like to jump up from the FCS and immediately become the conference favourite. Easy stuff. Look, I’m sure many players don’t care about what the leaders at Liberty are all about. Same as at BYU or Notre Dame or Baylor or any other university with a religious affiliation. They just want to play football. I think people forget that (or want to forget that).

UPDATE #2: This game will also appear on TSN 1, 4 and 5. It will start on TSN5 right at 1:00 and join in progress on the other three stations at about 3:30.

Citrus Bowl: #21 Tennessee vs. #17 Iowa1:00

Thankfully Tennessee is in this game. Otherwise, this could smash the record that is repeatedly set by this year’s Iowa team for lowest over/under ever. Kirk Ferentz is desperately hoping for a 7-6 with a good ol’ Iowa touchdown (a field goal and two safeties).

Rose Bowl: #1 Michigan vs. #4 Alabama5:00

Did Nick Saban do one of his best coaching jobs ever with this group? Yes. Yes he did. Should Michigan be allowed in the College Football Playoff? I’m sure there are many (SEC fans) who think that Michigan should have their entire football program shut down because “Michigan cheated.” Not that I disagree that Michigan cheated because it sure felt like they did but I am under the assumption that at least half the Power Five schools cheat in some manner. It’s college football: it’s never been squeaky clean. Ever. To think it was…well, you’re just wrong.

UPDATE #3: This will appear on TSN1, 4 and 5 as well. There will be an update sometime in the next few days to determine which feed appears where.

UPDATE #6: The entire game will appear on TSN1, 4 and 5.

Sugar Bowl: #2 Washington vs. #3 Texas8:45

Will I watch this entire game? Abso-fucking-lutely. Will I be a bit tired at work the next day? Maybe. I wonder if I should just book a vacation day. “Hey Bossman, doing anything fun on your vacation day?” “Well I’m definitely not recovering from watching the Sugar Bowl, that’s for sure.” Then they’d look at me like I have six heads.

UPDATE #4: Same update as the Rose Bowl.

UPDATE #7: The entire game will appear on TSN1, 4, and 5.

Monday January 9th

College Football Playoff National Championship8:00

At this point, this game isn’t appearing on the TSN schedule. Neither are the New Year’s Day ones although that might come as early as tomorrow. If it’s the same as last year then those are three stations it will appear on. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the special feeds goes to TSN+. Final game of the year (other than the wacky all-star games that are fun but not as exciting as the rest of the games). I will probably be wearing a frown when this game ends.

UPDATE #5: This game will also appear on TSN4. Determination of feed will probably happen closer to New Year’s Day.

Breakdown time!

  • TSN only (regular channels) – 22 games
  • TSN+ & specialty pack – 10 games
  • ABC & TSN – 6 games
  • ABC & TSN+ – 2 games
  • FOX – 1 game
  • CBS – 1 game
  • The CW – 1 game

TSN is showing EVERY bowl game. Every. Single. One. With a caveat. We are starting to see the TSN+ effect. TSN+ will have 12 of the bowl games, either paired with airing on ABC or paired with appearing on the specialty pack. This is the future. Get ready for it. And also get ready for a day when at least the college football portion of the specialty pack goes away since I think that day is coming as well.

Next up are the bowl game rankings and the NFL schedule post for the upcoming week. I am still going back and forth on whether I will do another post on how I would fix the postseason. It’s a bit tougher now that they have gone to a 12-team playoff but with less conferences. Expect at least (AT LEAST) seven Big Ten/SEC teams in every playoff going forward unless something wacky happens. That would leave, at most, the G-5 champ and two each from the ACC and Big XII. Sounds about right (unfortunately for many schools). Anyway, I will make the decision at some point over the next week or so. Enjoy the rest of your week everyone and get ready for the bowl games in THREE DAYS!

Seriously? The Week 13 NFL TV Schedule

Yes, that’s Aaron Rodgers. That was Aaron Rodgers THIS WEEK. And yes, he was tossing the pigskin. Not only was he tossing the pigskin, he was moving around like he was in the pocket.

A-A-Ron suffered that torn Achilles a little less than three months ago. Most athletes would take about six months to recover at best. There are rumours that Rodgers, who seems like Superman now, might be back in late January, meaning he would have been out a little less than four months. That is completely ridiculous. I get that he’s a high level athlete but even for an athlete of this calibre, this is remarkable. Now, will he actually end up coming back? I have a feeling the Jets will have to be in playoff contention for him to do so otherwise what’s the point? And if the Jets have a shot at the playoffs? The Jets could become a VERY dangerous team all of a sudden.

Alright enough of Rodgers (for now) and get to what you are here for…that’s right, Frank Stallone television schedules.

NFL Schedule Points for this week (and this week only!)

  • You want to see these games? Better get Sunday Ticket or RedZone:
    • Indianapolis at Tennessee
    • Atlanta at NY Jets
    • Cleveland at LA Rams
  • I guess the Browns-Rams game could have some interest since the Browns are still in the thick of things but the rest? Meh.
  • No surprise that the 49ers-Eagles game is national for us. Both teams are looking to build their already fairly sizable division leads (although the Eagles have those pesky Cowboys to deal with in their division). I’m kind of surprised the Broncos and Texans didn’t get the same treatment in the early window but I am guessing that’s mostly because of the Texans. They are playing well but they do not have a national following. Somewhat similar to the Broncos to be honest.
  • The TSN+ broadcast for Monday Night Football is the Manningcast just so you know. I can confirm that is the plan going forward is to keep this on TSN+ and make you pay whatever per month. I think it’s more than ESPN+ which is fucking preposterous considering how much live sports you get with ESPN+ compared to TSN+.
  • Yes, for people out west (or people with satellite) who get FOX out of Seattle, you can avoid going onto Prime to get your Thursday night football fix.

Alright, time for the updated playoff picture as of right fucking now!

AFCNFC
#1 Baltimore (9-3)#1 Philadelphia (10-1)
#2 Kansas City (8-3)#2 San Francisco (8-3)
#3 Jacksonville (8-3)#3 Detroit (8-3)
#4 Miami (8-3)#4 Atlanta (5-6)
Wild Cards:Wild Cards:
#5 Pittsburgh (7-4)#5 Dallas (8-3)
#6 Cleveland (7-4)#6 Seattle (6-5)
#7 Indianapolis/Houston/Denver (6-5)#7 Minnesota (6-6)

I’ve decided to switch to showing teams’ records since if you don’t know which teams are leading which divisions…well, I don’t know what to tell you. Three-way tie for the final Wild Card spot in the AFC with the Colts, Texans and resurgent Broncos at 6-5. And there are SIX other teams within two games of them. The only team truly out of it in the AFC is the Patriots. Imagine saying that any time in the past, oh, quarter-century. The Cowboys look like they will end up clinching at least a Wild Card spot unless they have a monster collapse so it’s down to two spots, really. Sure, the Seahawks and Vikings are in those spots right now but haven’t exactly looked like world-beaters over the past little while. Plus, we have the NFC South and their band of misfits. God damn it, I hate the fact that the team that wins that division will host a playoff game. Fucking stupid. That should have been changed as soon as they put a seventh team in the playoffs in each conference. Almost feels like beating a dead horse at this point with how much I have mentioned it but it still irks me.

Anyway, everyone have a great weekend and enjoy the games!

The Super Bowl where? And the Week 7 NFL TV Schedule

What are we looking at here? Why, it’s Wembley Stadium, one of two London-area stadiums that the NFL uses for their games over there, the other being Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Why am I showing you a picture of this stadium (which really does look like a very nice stadium to tell you the truth)? It’s because the Commish, Roger Goodell (who recently signed an extension through 2027 which I am sure people cheered and had parties for) stated that at some point in the future he thinks the Super Bowl might come to London.

Excuse me? London? As in England? He was totally serious, by the way. He fucking loves London. Wants a team there desperately and I will find a way to do so before he is done his time as commissioner.

Look, do I really care where the Super Bowl is? Not really. I will never be able to afford to go to it. Ever. Hell, it’s tough enough to go to a single game. So I always watch at home or at a friend’s house or once at a bar which honestly kind of sucked. The thing is though, the Super Bowl, for the past God-knows how many years (OK it’s 32), has started between 6:25 and 6:40 every year. If the game is in London, that would be a no go. It would start no later than 3:30 in the afternoon on the East Coast. Can you imagine West Coast fans starting their Super Bowl parties at just after Noon? That to me would be the one thing I wouldn’t like about it. And I can’t see many people in North America liking it either.

What does this all mean? Goodell will probably eventually get his wish but he may not be around to see it. He’s got regular season games in London and Germany now. I am sure one or two more countries will be added shortly. Once half the weeks have a Europe game, talks will start about expansion there. It will happen, folks. Just a matter of time. THEN, I see the Super Bowl in London talks to heat up and not before there are expansion teams there (although that may just be my opinion).

Alright, enough of that gobshite, let’s get to what you came for, the NFL schedule (pronounced shed-jew-ull) for the week.

A set of American-Style Football Notes

  • No games in jolly old England this weekend. Those are done for the season. Such a shame (not really).
  • Games not being shown on the telly in Canada unless you receive that lovely fellow Scott Hanson’s rousing football highlights show:
    • Las Vegas at Chicago
    • Atlanta at Tampa Bay
  • After last week’s mind-blowingly disgusting matchup between the New York Football Giants and the Bills of Buffalo, we are gifted a welcome matchup. Two of the best teams in the land will face off as the Eagles host the Dolphins in what should be a smashing match.
  • The Monday Night Football game, on the other hand, might not be a particularly close affair. Even with the 49ers loss to the Cleveland Browns last week, they still should be heavy favourites when they travel to Minneapolis to tangle with the Vikings. Now watch it be a great game to end the football week.
  • Is it just me or has CBS done quite a few games where over 90% of the affiliates are showing one game over the other(s)?

By the way, can NFL Twitter/X stop talking about that one crazy Chargers fan from the Monday night game? Like who gives a shit? People calling her a plant and a fake. Many are taking this all way too seriously. The fact that the Chargers even have a fan that is that intense should have been the main story since I don’t think they’ve had a true home field advantage since they left San Diego.

Alright, there you go. Hopefully it’s better than this past week’s games since they were mostly awful. Might have been one of the worst weeks of NFL football I have seen in a long time. Enjoy the games everyone!

I kind of hate myself for this (the 2023 NFL preview)

Ugh. I’ll be honest: I am not an Aaron Rodgers fan. Never really have been. I don’t hate the guy. I respect what he’s done on the football field. I just think he’s fucking weird and can be a complete crybaby pussy when things don’t go his way. Then again, I guess I could say that last part for many pro athletes.

OK Bossman, then why did you put his picture up to start this blog post? Well, as much as I dislike A-A-Ron, he’s still a top tier quarterback. And his move to the New York Jets after what seemed like a bunch of seasons being pissed off with Green Bay management (and rightfully so at times, I will admit) is the biggest offseason move in my opinion. It also makes it so he will be facing my favourite team, the Buffalo Bills, twice every season (and three if they meet in the playoffs). That’s a big deal. There is a shift in the AFC East and the AFC in general that’s a little more than your normal “Team A has improved and should fight for a playoff spot after not making it last year.” This is “Team A has acquired a gamechanger and could compete for the division title if the chips fall in their favour.”

It seems like every season I take a quick look at how I did the previous year with some of my predictions. So why not do that again right now? Because I don’t want to? Too fucking bad, it’s tradition. This is making me sound a bit schizophrenic.

  • I had Buffalo beating the Rams in the Super Bowl. Good fucking God. I mean yeah the Rams had injuries but what was I thinking?
  • Had the Chargers losing the AFC title game. Hey, they made the playoffs but lost in an epic collpase against Jacksonville.
  • In the other conference championship I figured Tampa Bay would make it there and then lose. Actually I had them with the second-best record in the league. They were good…but not that good. Even with Tom Brady.
  • I also had the Colts and Titans to make the playoffs. Woof.
  • I did have Houston near the bottom to get the top pick of the NFL Draft. I had the Falcons actually “winning” that pick and they weren’t too far off. Having the Jags, Giants and Seahawks that low though? Damn.

Alright enough of that memory shit. I think I’ll do better this time, no….I WILL do better this time. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite me in the butt. Let’s go with the projected standings where a funny little asterisk beside a team means they get to be a Wild Card team this season (I think):

Notes on all this fun and crazy crap

  • I figured there would be a lot of parity last year. It didn’t quite work out that way with a few teams running away to the top of the league. I can’t see a 14-win team this season but you never know. I have the Bills, Chiefs, 49ers and Eagles all getting to the 13-win mark.
  • The best race in the AFC will definitely be in the AFC North. Cincinnati and Baltimore look like they should be neck-and-neck to win the division and you can’t totally count out the Steelers either there although they will have to show out and garner a couple of upsets to make it a three-way race.
  • In the NFC, the North is going to be closest divisional race there too. The Lions might finally be the class of the division although the Vikings are lurking and have been at the top many times over the last decade.
  • The NFC South should also be a good race but for many of the wrong reasons. I do have the Saints getting over .500 but I could see the division winner having eight wins which I cannot stand.
  • As for the Wild Card race in the NFC, it’ll be…alright. There’s going to be some eight-win teams in the mix late in December and into January and perhaps even a team like the Packers still alive going into the final week. Yeah, it might be that dire.
  • In the AFC it won’t be quite the same. The Dolphins, Steelers and Chargers I have fighting down to the wire for that final Wild Card spot with the Broncos and Browns maybe, just maybe, being in the mix as well.
  • It just feels like the Cardinals are already starting their race to the bottom of the league. Sure I have the Colts, Bucs and Raiders also not doing very well but Arizona…man, I wonder if three wins is too much for them. They could be that bad…even with Kyler Murray as their quarterback.
  • I thought Josh Allen would win the MVP last season. He had a good year but nothing compared to Patrick Mahomes or Jalen Hurts, who battled it out for the award with Mahomes winning it. This year…I believe Joe Burrow channels his inner “final year at LSU” and goes off for a monster season to lead the Bengals to the AFC North title.
  • Should I pick a Rookie of the Year? Hey, I did well with my Aidan Hutchinson choice since I think he won one of the various rookie awards (although Sauce Gardner was the real revelation last season). This year I will go with Bijan Robinson on the offensive side of the ball and Jalen Carter on defense.
  • I should have went with Dan Campbell last year as Coach of the Year. Trust your gut, Bossman! This year my gut says Robert Saleh of the Jets will win it but don’t count out Sean Payton or Dan Campbell yet again.

Yes the Chiefs will get back to the Super Bowl yet again. It’ll help that I have the Bengals getting upset in the Wild Card Round by the Jets. The Niners will finally get the Super Bowl that has eluded them for almost three decades and they get revenge for the Chiefs beating them four years prior. Jacksonville will get close by getting to the AFC Championship and the Lions will win their first playoff game since 1991. I can feel it. I think.

We are getting closer. That’s right, the first college football schedule of the season is right around the corner. Sure it’s Week Zero but still…it’s WEEK ZERO! As is the norm, I am so looking forward to this season. Hell, I will be on the edge of my seat watching New Mexico State hosting UMass in less than two weeks! That’s how much I am looking forward to college football returning. You all have a great upcoming week!

Sure, let’s do a bit of a draft recap

I will get to this man a bit later since he went through quite the night.

As usual, the draft was a fun time…well, the first night was fun then it got steadily less fun until the final rounds when other than NFL Network’s Stump The Truck, almost nothing was really all that fun. But I watched most of it. What can I say, I am way into football. Probably too much but soon enough I will be on my own a lot more so football may be the only thing that keeps me company. God, that’s sad. Let’s move on.

First of all, I will take a look at my mock draft and compare it to the actual draft results and…yep, I got basically nothing right. I couldn’t even get the first two picks right. I had C.J. Stroud going first followed by Bryce Young. I think Carolina made the right pick out of the two but I was sure they had their sights set on Stroud. Funny enough, though, I got two picks exactly right: Zay Flowers to the Ravens at #22 and Wanya Morris to the Chiefs at #92. That really doesn’t make any sense but it’s the truth. Other than that, everything else wrong and some were REALLY wrong.

Reaches

It’s always too soon to look at this but there seem to be picks that were universally thought of as reaches: as in a team picked a player way earlier than they probably would have gone. I know some teams absolutely want a specific player and worry about not getting them that much that they either take them too soon or trade up to get them when they didn’t need to. Still doesn’t mean it wasn’t a stretch for that player. Let’s look at a few that felt obvious.

Darnell Wright (#10 overall to Chicago) – I, along with most others, had Wright pegged as a late-1st round/early-2nd round pick at best. The fact that the Bears also passed on Peter Skoronski, from Northwestern (supposedly Chicago’s Big Ten school) is the real headscratcher here.

Jahmyr Gibbs (#12 to Detroit) – Speaking of headscratchers, it’s like Detroit brought back Matt Millen and his new focus wasn’t wide receivers but running backs. Detroit did not need help at running back but took Gibbs at this point anyway. I had figured he’d end up on the Bills which didn’t thrill me but Gibbs is better than what they have at this point. Anyway, Detroit ended up trading D’Andre Swift to the Eagles because of this pick. I don’t get it.

Deonte Banks (#24 to NY Giants) – Did the Giants need a cornerback? Absolutely. Was Joey Porter Jr. still on the board? Absolutely. Was Kelee Ringo still on the board? Absolutely. Was Cam Smith still on the board? Absolutely. I could go on and on but Banks wasn’t a first rounder and I’d be shocked if he plays like one.

Derick Hall (#37 to Seattle) – The Seahawks didn’t exactly need a defensive end but they decided to pick one anyway. OK, that’s fine. To pick Hall when there were a few other guys on the board who were rated way higher made no sense. Hall was barely a second rounder in most mock drafts.

Steals

On the other hand, we have our draft steals. Every draft has their steals and yes I know Tom Brady was a “steal.” Actually, no, at the time, no one thought he was a steal of a pick. No one. At all. If you say you did, you’re a dirty fucking liar. Again, this is way too early so by the time the next draft occurred, yes, Brady was considered a massive steal. Hell, he would have been a steal as a late second rounder.

Christian Gonzalez (#17 to New England) – The biggest steal of the draft in my opinion. I had him going third overall and many mock drafts had him in the top seven picks. Did the Pats need any help in the secondary? No, but how do you pass on a guy that has dropped approximately 10 spots or so in the first round when you don’t have a huge need? Once again, Bill Belichick is playing 4-D Parcheesi while everyone else is playing Snakes and Ladders.

Dalton Kincaid (#25 to Buffalo) – I was not happy when Bijan Robinson was off the board super early. Man did he go from not even a first rounder like a month ago to Top 10 pick. Anyway, the Bills did the next best thing (that they needed) by getting the best tight end in the draft in Kincaid. Josh Allen could make the guy…well, not a star but a very dependable receiver.

Joey Porter Jr. (#32 to Pittsburgh) – How did the last into the second round? There were easily six different teams that should have taken him and passed. Yeah I’m looking at you New York Football Giants (or GEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-Men in honour of Chris Berman). He may make a couple of teams pay for passing on him this coming season.

Jalin Hyatt (#73 to NY Giants) – So the Giants make one of the worst picks of the early part of the draft and then somehow snag Hyatt in the third round. Hey, whatever works. I could have also put Hyatt’s Tennessee Volunteer teammate Cedric Tillman here as he went one spot later to the Browns.

Alright let’s get down to the Will Levis situation. ESPN did this man (and his family) dirty. Well, most of them. I think the girlfriend loved the attention. Still though, to spend four-plus hours in that room and not get your name called has to suck. And ESPN loved it. You know they did. Most people had him going in the #7-#13 range. I had him going to Washington at #16. Then someone on Reddit (I think) tweeted that the Panthers were considering him for the top pick. All of a sudden, people became a lot more interested in him. It also meant that every draft pick that wasn’t him would make him look worse. And yes I know there are others that suffer the same plight but he is, by far, the most hyped of anyone who has had that happen. Also, why didn’t Tennessee move up into the first round to get him? Now they lose a potential option year if he ends up being good. Poor management by the Titans there.

Best Draft

Again, this is way too early but you can kind of tell when a team probably had a good draft (unless one of their top picks is a flop). Here is my list of the top three teams from draft day.

Philadelphia – It feels almost unanimous among experts (which I am not one of) that the Eagles had the best draft. Not only did they continue their Georgia Bulldog-riffic defense picking Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, but they also drafted Bama’s Tyler Steen who could potentially anchor the offensive line soon enough and somehow had Kelee Ringo (another Bulldog) fall into their lap in the fourth round. Finally, Detroit’s stupidity made it so the Eagles got D’Andre Swift in a trade with the Lions. An all-around great few days for possibly the NFC favourites.

Indianapolis – No, this isn’t all about the Anthony Richardson pick although that is what much of the Colts’ draft will hinge on. They had a great draft otherwise, though, with a huge value pick in the fourth round, nabbing Adetomiwa Adeboware. Really, it’s Richardson and Adeboware for the Colts. If they both hit then this will end up being the number one draft crop in hindsight. Otherwise….yikes. Huge risk-reward for a team that feels the time is right to make huge moves.

Pittsburgh – The Eagles’ cross-state rival also had quite the good, if not underrated, draft, looking like the smartest team coming out of the draft. They filled pretty much all their needs in the first three rounds and then got some great value late. Porter is a steal and teams may regret not picking him.

Worst Draft

Very rarely does a team get selected having the worst draft and then it ends up that everyone was wrong in hindsight. So yeah, this is not a good group to be in.

Jacksonville – Third worst on our list is the Jags with a bit of a perplexing draft. Things were looking great for a team that looked like it may run away with the AFC South over the next few years. That may not be the case anymore, and this draft didn’t help matters any. Unfortunately, the Cam Robinson situation forced them to pick O-line early but Anton Harrison may not have been the guy. Tank Bigsby was a pretty bad pick and could have been got two rounds later. And for a team that needed a tight end as another weapon for Trevor Lawrence, getting Brenton Strange isn’t it with other guys on the board. Just weird all around.

Minnesota – Look, they did pretty well with the Jordan Addison pick. Beyond that? Woof. Every other pick was a reach and they really didn’t do anything to help Kirk Cousins beyond getting Addison to hopefully pair with Justin Jefferson. Cousins is in the last year of his contract and this felt like the year the Vikings really had to try and go for it or start building for the future and they did neither.

San Francisco – Just like Philly, it’s a pretty unanimous vote on the other end of the draft grades. The ass end, if you will. The 49ers did a deplorable job this time around. Lucky for them, as long as Brock Purdy and/or Trey Lance are ready to go, this team is ready to battle for the NFC title at the very least. But holy shit, you’d think you would draft one guy that would help the team this coming season. Especially on the offensive line, where they needed help and drafted nobody. But hey, they drafted a kicker. Before the 100th pick. For fuck’s sakes what a joke.

Finally, a quick look at the two networks showing the draft. Most people seemed to be watching ESPN, as per usual. The NFL Network picked up the rest of the viewers. Problem was, the amount of complaints I heard about ESPN were staggering. Yet, these same people obviously outright refused to just, oh I don’t know, turn to the other network with draft coverage. I get that hearing the old NFL Primetime music is great (it really is) but if the coverage sucks then change the channel. My opinion, as you may know, is that the NFL Network has always had better coverage since they started showing the draft. I mean, that’s their whole thing: the NFL. ESPN suffers from trying to put in as many horrific stories about the draftees and too many people involved in the production. At least a quarter of the people involved could have been axed because they sucked at their job on this night.

I think that’s the first draft recap I have done in a long time. I don’t feel like looking. I’m not really a recap kind of guy but I figured what the hell. We are now 107 days away from the college football season and the posts will start coming along more frequently once again. We are getting close to true football season, folks! Not that I’m minding the XFL since it has been pretty good. The USFL, on the other hand, ugh. Have a great rest of the week everyone.

A Week Unlike Any Other – Week 18 NFL TV Schedule

This has been a very difficult couple of days for everyone involved with the NFL and the fans. Damar Hamlin’s on-field heart attack stunned everyone and really made everyone pause and take account of what really mattered. Football became secondary and it still is.

Hamlin is now showing signs of recovery. This is awesome. And now that it looks like he might just be out of the woods in terms of eventually recovering from this, the NFL went ahead and decided what will be done going forward. And yeah, to say that Twitter has had something to say about it would be an understatement.

Alright, here is the schedule for Week 18 and the points afterwards…well they may be the craziest in the history of this blog:

Special Last Week of the Regular Season Notes

  • For the sixth straight year, the NFL has put a lot of thought into what the final week of the regular season will look like. Unfortunately, this has caused a lot of issues and, frankly, it feels like the NFL didn’t do exactly the greatest job here.
  • The only obvious game to put in its own timeslot is the Titans-Jaguars game. The winner wins the AFC South. Technically, there is a way for the Jags to get the final Wild Card spot and I will explain that later on. So they put Tennessee and Jacksonville Saturday night. So far so good.
  • The league put the Chiefs-Raiders game on Saturday afternoon. A bit of an odd choice and considering what happened this past Monday, takes on a whole new level of importance. Still, not a bad choice so this is fine.
  • The Sunday nighter. Ho boy. The NFL obviously went for ratings. Basically they said “Fuck the Seattle Seahawks, we want a money matchup in our final spot.” And they got it. Lions-Packers is not a win-and-you’re-in/lose-and-your out scenario. The Lions have to hope that the Seahawks also lose their game which was slotted on Sunday afternoon. Will the Lions play tough regardless of where they stand? Dan Campbell won’t allow them not to. But that isn’t the point. The point is the NFL decided that instead of putting these games on at the same time, they willingly put two teams over another one for what amounts to cash. Not surprising but kind not the best idea.
  • As you know by now, the Bills-Bengals game from Monday night was cancelled. It’s been ruled a no contest. Not a tie. It’s like it never happened. This means both teams will finish a 16-game schedule rather than a 17-game schedule. Ramifications for this? Oh you bet there are some.
  • First of all, there is an interesting situation involving Baltimore and Cincinnati. Cincinnati has now clinched the AFC North. No matter what happens in their game, the Bengals will have a higher winning percentage. This is the main reason why this game wasn’t put on Sunday night (although I have a feeling the NFL was leaning Lions-Packers anyway). Here’s the issue with all this. If the Ravens win this Sunday’s game, and the Wild Card round has the same two teams facing off, there will be a coin toss to determine who the home team is. So the Bengals could become the first division champion to not host a Wild Card game since the league went to seven (and even six) teams in the playoffs per conference.
  • That’s not all! The AFC Championship is now possibly going to be a neutral site game. This would also be a first-ever. The reason for this is that going into last Monday’s game, Buffalo controlled their own destiny. Win out and they get the only first round bye in the AFC. Now that the game was cancelled, they lose that. So the NFL had to figure out a way to make it so the Bills didn’t completely lose out because of what happened. This is what they came up with: if there is a chance that the Bills (or even the Bengals in one case) could have been the #1 seed after this Sunday’s games, the AFC Championship will be at a neutral site. This will only happen if the AFC title game involves two of the Chiefs, Bills or Bengals. So here are the AFC Championship Neutral Site scenarios:
    • If the Chiefs and Bills lose and the Bengals win, then a KC-Buffalo OR a KC-Cincinnati AFC Championship will be at a neutral site.
    • If all three teams lose, only a KC-Buffalo AFCCG would be at a neutral site.
    • If the Chiefs lose and the Bills win, a KC-Buffalo AFCCG would be in Buffalo and a KC-Cincinnati AFCCG would be in Kansas City.
    • If the Chiefs win and the Bills lose, KC would host the AFC Championship if they made it there, no matter who they play.
    • If the Chiefs and Bills win, a KC-Buffalo AFCCG would be at a neutral site and a KC-Cincinnati AFCCG would be in Kansas City.
    • If only one of these three teams makes it to the AFC Championship, they would host. Got all that?
    • Was this the best way of doing things? No, however the NFL adamantly refused to drop the gap between the conference championships and the Super Bowl down to one week. So this is arguably one of the better ways to do this. Is it the best? Who knows. This is all a shitshow. And it’s unprecedented. Remember that. If this happened two months ago, the game would have been somehow rescheduled.

So now let’s look at the final playoff picture, which, obviously, in the AFC is a mess:

AFCNFC
#1 Kansas City (clinched AFC West)#1 Philadelphia (clinched playoff berth, leads NFC East)
#2 Buffalo (clinched AFC East)#2 San Francisco (clinched NFC West)
#3 Cincinnati (clinched AFC North)#3 Minnesota (clinched NFC North)
#4 Jacksonville (leads AFC South)#4 Tampa Bay (clinched NFC South)
Wild Cards:Wild Cards:
#5 LA Chargers (clinched playoff berth)#5 Dallas (clinched playoff berth)
#6 Baltimore (clinched playoff berth)#6 NY Giants (clinched playoff berth)
#7 New England/Miami/Pittsburgh#7 Seattle/Detroit/Green Bay

For the Wild Cards it comes down to the Patriots, Dolphins, Steelers and Jags in the AFC and the Seahawks, Lions and Packers in the NFC. The Patriots and Packers control their own destiny so wins will put them in. If that doesn’t happen, an absolute boatload of possibilities come into play. So let’s go game-by-game and see what we’ve got before us this weekend in terms of clinching scenarios. By the way, I am not including ties here. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite me in the ass.

Kansas City at Las Vegas

  • Kansas City clinches a first round bye with a win OR a Buffalo loss
  • Kansas City clinches a first round bye and home field advantage with a win AND a Buffalo loss

Tennessee at Jacksonville

  • Tennessee clinches the AFC South with a win
  • Jacksonville clinches the AFC South with a win
  • Jacksonville clinches a playoff berth with a Miami loss AND a New England loss AND a Pittsburgh loss

New England at Buffalo

  • Buffalo clinches a first round bye and home field advantage with a win AND a Kansas City loss
  • New England clinches a playoff berth with a win OR (a Miami loss AND a Pittsburgh loss AND a Jacksonville win)

Cleveland at Pittsburgh

  • Pittsburgh clinches a playoff berth with a win AND a Miami loss AND a New England loss

NY Jets at Miami

  • Miami clinches a playoff berth with a win AND a New England loss

NY Giants at Philadelphia

  • Philadelphia clinches a first round bye with a win OR (a Dallas loss AND a San Francisco loss)
  • Philadelphia clinches the NFC East with a win OR a Dallas loss

Dallas at Washington

  • Dallas clinches a first round bye with a win AND a Philadelphia loss AND a San Francisco loss
  • Dallas clinches the NFC East with a win AND a Philadelphia loss

LA Rams at Seattle

  • Seattle clinches a playoff berth with a win AND a Green Bay loss

Arizona at San Francisco

  • San Francisco clinches a first round bye with a win AND a Philadelphia loss

Detroit at Green Bay

  • Green Bay clinches a playoff berth with a win
  • Detroit clinches a playoff berth with a win AND a Seattle loss

As for seeding, things get a bit more difficult. Only two seeds out of 14 are locked in. For something new this season and to make this already-long blog post even longer, here are the seeding scenarios.

NFC

#1 seed

  • Philadelphia – win
  • San Francisco – win AND Eagles loss
  • Dallas – win AND Eagles loss AND 49ers loss

#2 seed

  • San Francisco – (win AND Eagles win) OR (loss AND Vikings loss)
  • Philadelphia – loss AND Cowboys loss AND 49ers win
  • Minnesota – win AND 49ers loss
  • Dallas – win AND Eagles loss AND 49ers win

#3 seed

  • Minnesota – loss OR 49ers win
  • San Francisco – loss AND Vikings win

#4 seed

  • Tampa Bay locked in

#5 seed

  • Dallas – loss OR Eagles win
  • Philadelphia – loss AND Cowboys win

#6 seed

  • NY Giants locked in

#7 seed

  • Seattle – win AND Packers loss
  • Detroit – win AND Seahawks loss
  • Green Bay – win

AFC

#1 seed

  • Kansas City – win OR Bills loss
  • Buffalo – win AND Chiefs loss

#2 seed

  • Buffalo – (loss AND Bengals win) OR (win AND Chiefs win)
  • Kansas City – loss AND Bills win
  • Cincinnati – win AND Bills loss

#3 seed

  • Cincinnati – loss OR Bills win
  • Buffalo – loss AND Bengals win

#4 seed

  • Jacksonville – win
  • Tennessee – win

#5 seed

  • LA Chargers – win OR Ravens loss
  • Baltimore – win AND Chargers loss

#6 seed

  • Baltimore – loss OR Chargers win
  • LA Chargers – loss AND Ravens win

#7 seed

  • New England – win OR (Dolphins loss AND Steelers loss AND Jaguars win)
  • Miami – win AND Patriots loss
  • Pittsburgh – win AND Dolphins loss AND Patriots loss
  • Jacksonville – loss AND Dolphins loss AND Patriots loss AND Steelers loss

Finally, the Texans clinch the #1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft with a loss or a Bears loss. If the Texans win and the Bears lose, Chicago will be on the clock. The Texans are almost assuredly going to take Bryce Young. If the Bears get the #1 pick, who knows what they will do since they won’t be taking a quarterback.

OK, now college football. I usually don’t do previews but I won’t be doing a whole post for the two national championships. The FCS National Championship is on Sunday at 2:00 on ABC. As for the College Football Playoff National Championship, it is at 8:00 Monday night as TCU faces Georgia. The game will appear on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5. These are all the regular broadcast. You can check out the Field Pass, Command Center, SkyCast and All-22 broadcasts on TSN.ca. No Coaches Film Room and no Coaches Film Room with Open Bar this season which makes me sad. As for a prediction, I would love to say the Horned Frogs will pull this out. I would love to say Sonny Dykes finishes one of the most improbable seasons in college football history with a victory and a national title. Instead I think Georgia will repeat. It will be close but I see the Dawgs winning 38-34.

UPDATE: Well, not an update but more of an oversight on my part. The game begins at 7:30, not 8:00. Interesting choice considering it’s in Los Angeles.

Alright, if you read all this, you are prepared for the insanity that is coming up in the NFL. Have fun watching the games everyone!

It Actually Happened (the Week 17 NFL TV Schedule)

I kind of joked earlier in the year that I think Nathaniel Hackett should have been fired during the season. I think quite a few people said it as well. The thing is, that happens rarely in the NFL. This isn’t college football where there are coaching changes all the time.

But guess what? It happened! It actually happened! The Denver Broncos pulled the trigger and shitcanned Hackett. I am actually surprised since I figured they would let him finish out the season and then fire him on Black Monday. Problem is, the Broncos looked so horrifically bad in their loss to the Rams this past weekend (where I am surprised Nickolodeon didn’t run out of slime despite the fact it’s all animated) that I think they had no choice but to axe him. It’s a smart move. No head coach has looked as inept at his job than Hackett did (although Jeff Saturday is trying his best to change that mindset). He was not ready and to be honest, I don’t think he will ever be ready to be a head coach. Good offensive coordinator, bad head coach. It’s the Wade Phillips corollary (paradox? equation?). Not every coordinator can run a team. And Hackett can’t…..hack it.

Let’s get to the schedule, which will not contain Nathaniel Hackett. It’s the second-last week of the season so a lot can happen and I’m not just talking about the standings. Here we go.

Non-Nathaniel Things

  • I get that Jeff Saturday is an interim head coach and not the full-time guy but still, he’s terrible. And shouldn’t be back next year in any capacity.
  • If all you can get is games from the American networks (I don’t know why that would be the case) then this may be the worst week ever. Five games over the entire afternoon? That’s the kind of schedule you would get in 1992, not 2022.
  • Canadians have it a bit better obviously but they are still missing games: Jaguars/Texans, Rams/Chargers, Saints/Eagles, Browns/Commanders, Cardinals/Falcons, 49ers/Raiders. Six. That’s not good either.
  • I am sure at least a few people are pissed off that the NFL is on New Year’s Day and the Rose Bowl isn’t. Too fucking bad. They decided to move last week’s games to Christmas Eve and they damn well weren’t going to do that this weekend. Put the games on New Year’s Eve when you don’t have to? Ratings suicide. And this is coming from a huge college football fan who still thinks ESPN is leaving viewers on the table by having the College Football Playoff semi-finals on New Year’s Eve.

UPDATE: I forgot about the small tweak to the smart time of the Monday night game. It will start at 8:30 and not 8:15. The Rose Bowl is on immediately before it so don’t be surprised if we don’t get to actually start watching the Bills-Bengals game until close to 9:00.

Almost there! This week and next week and it’s playoff time. Here’s what the playoff picture looks like at this point:

AFCNFC
#1 Buffalo (clinched AFC East)#1 Philadelphia (clinched playoff berth, leads NFC East)
#2 Kansas City (clinched AFC West)#2 Minnesota (clinched NFC North)
#3 Cincinnati (clinched playoff berth, leads AFC North)#3 San Francisco (clinched NFC West)
#4 Jacksonville (leads AFC South)#4 Tampa Bay (leads NFC South)
Wild Cards:Wild Cards:
#5 Baltimore (clinched playoff berth)#5 Dallas (clinched playoff berth)
#6 LA Chargers (clinched playoff berth)#6 NY Giants
#7 Miami#7 Washington

And here is your list of eliminated teams (whether you like it or not):

  • Houston
  • Chicago
  • Denver
  • Arizona
  • Indianapolis
  • Atlanta
  • LA Rams
  • Cleveland

That’s it? Yep. This is what happens when you have two atrocious divisions. I don’t think that’s ever happened before and I hope this makes it so the NFL changes their ridiculously dumb playoff structure. Division winners should only be guaranteed a playoff spot. Maybe a top 5. But not a home playoff game. That’s dumb. It’s why I hope both the AFC South and NFC South champs have losing records. To shed light on stupidity.

Anyway, when it comes to the draft, the Texans can clinch with a loss and a Bears win. It feels like a guarantee that Bryce Young is going to be Houston’s new quarterback but stranger things have happened.

Now for the clinching scenarios list which is getting much longer (and what’s most of us are watching these games for anyway):

First Round Bye

  • Philadelphia clinches with a win OR (a Dallas loss AND a San Francisco loss AND a Minnesota loss)
  • Buffalo clinches with a win AND a Kansas City loss

Division Title

  • Philadelphia clinches the NFC East with a win OR a Dallas loss
  • Tampa Bay clinches the NFC South with a win
  • Cincinnati clinches the AFC North with a win AND a Baltimore loss

Playoff Berth

  • NY Giants clinch with a win OR (a Washington loss AND a Detroit loss AND a Green Bay loss) OR (a Washington loss AND a Seattle loss) OR (a Seattle loss AND a Detroit loss AND a Green Bay loss)
  • Washington clinches with a win AND a Seattle loss AND a Detroit loss AND a Green Bay loss
  • Miami clinches with a win AND a NY Jets loss

Elimination

  • New Orleans is eliminated with a loss OR (a Tampa Bay win AND a Washington win) OR (a Tampa Bay win AND a Detroit win AND a Green Bay win)
  • Carolina is eliminated with a loss
  • Washington is eliminated with a loss AND a Detroit win AND a Green Bay win
  • Detroit is eliminated with a loss AND a Washington win
  • Green Bay is eliminated with a loss AND (a Detroit win OR a Washington win)
  • Seattle is eliminated with (a loss AND a Washington win) OR (a loss AND a Detroit win AND a Green Bay win)
  • New England is eliminated with a loss
  • NY Jets are eliminated with a loss
  • Pittsburgh is eliminated with a loss OR a Miami win
  • Las Vegas is eliminated with a loss OR a Miami win OR a NY Jets win

Washington is in an interesting and relatively rare spot. It’s the penultimate week of the season yet they have both playoff clinching and elimination scenarios and both of them involve the same two teams, the Lions and Packers. You don’t see that very often. Also, there aren’t that many clinching scenarios to be honest. Yet, look at the sheer list of teams that could be eliminated this week. Ten. That’s a lot. Won’t happen but it’s still a lot.

As for the final week, the schedule will have, as far as I know, two Saturday games, one Sunday night game, and the rest of the games on Sunday afternoon with the more important ones falling in the 4:25 timeslot. What could we see? Here is what I think will probably happen:

  • It is a foregone conclusion that the Tennessee-Jacksonville game will be either the Saturday night or Sunday night game. I am going out on a limb and saying they will be the Saturday nighter.
  • Baltimore-Cincinnati is the favorite to be the Sunday nighter. I can’t see NBC picking Baltimore twice in a row. It’s their fault for picking them this week to begin with (I believe the pick this week is baffling). So no Ravens-Bengals Sunday nighter and they can’t be on Saturday because the Bengals are playing Monday night this week. So as long as the Bengals don’t clinch the AFC North this week, it will be a Sunday late game.
  • If New England and the NY Jets win this week, I see the Pats-Bills game being the Sunday nighter. The Pats would be in a win-and-in situation. The Bills could also be in a situation where they would need to win to get the first round bye. So a lot would be on the line.
  • If New England loses but the Jets win, then we could see the Jets-Dolphins game slot into the Sunday night spot.
  • Alright I will have to make a concession: if the Pats and Jets both lose this week then I do have a feeling NBC might just pick the Ravens-Bengals game (as long as the Bengals haven’t clinched the division).
  • Now…..ugh…if all three situations above don’t occur then the next game up would somehow be Lions-Packers but a bit has to happen for this game to get this slot (and we might be in a situation where the final game of the season means nothing because of what could happen earlier in the day).
  • If the Bucs don’t clinch the NFC South this week then the Saturday afternoon will probably be Panthers-Saints, especially if the Saints also win this week. It would be for the NFC South title I believe (I would have to check the tiebreakers but I think the Bucs would have the lowest percentage chance to win the division if both Carolina and New Orleans win this weekend).

So there you go. A lot of possibilities for next week’s single-game timeslots and we should find out late in the afternoon Sunday as to what we will see. It’s the time of season where there is a shit-ton of football on, both college and the NFL. So enjoy it because you know it doesn’t last. Have a Happy New Year everyone!

A couple of big trades (and the Week 8 NFL TV Schedule)

It started last week when the Panthers traded Christian McCaffrey to the 49ers for four draft picks. I wouldn’t say it’s a hefty cost for McCaffrey but it is a lot for a guy who has injury concerns. Saying that, when healthy, he’s the best running back in the league.

Then, yesterday, the Eagles traded for Robert Quinn. And it only cost them a fourth round pick. I don’t really know what the Bears are thinking but that is a low cost for a guy that’s still a great defensive end and a probable Hall of Famer.

That’s two big trades as we head toward the trade deadline on Tuesday. With the way the NFC has been, the Eagles are going for broke and the Niners have entered contender territory. Other names that are out there as potential trade chips are Brandin Cooks, Chase Claypool, Cam Akers, Bradley Chubb and Antonio Gibson. Expect at least one AFC team to add someone as that conference is a minefield where you will see a good team in the #7 spot going into the postseason.

Alright, done with the trades for now. On to the schedule!

Semi-Random Schedule Analysis

  • God damn London games. We have another one this week and it’s…the Broncos and the Jags. Fuck that. Maybe I’ll get up to watch the second half. Maybe.
  • Games not being shown in Canada (unless you have the almighty RedZone):
    • Las Vegas at New Orleans
    • Carolina at Atlanta
    • Washington at Indianapolis
  • Other than the Raiders-Saints game, no one here really cares about those ones we are missing. And even that’s a stretch.
  • A big Sunday nighter that should bring in big ratings and a big rivalry game for the Monday nighter. The primetime schedule looking good….even with the Ravens and Bucs on Thursday night. Yeah, I said it.
  • It is amazing to see the New York Football Giants in the prime late window spot. When is the last time that happened? Probably their Super Bowl season since they’ve been hot garbage since then.

That’s it, that’s all. Not a whole lot to say here. We are almost at the halfway point of the season and other than some terrible Thursday Night Football games, the season has been fun. Let’s hope that continues. I mean…we know it won’t but we have to hope, right?

Happy ‘Murican Turkey Day/4-Day Weekend – Week 12 NFL TV Schedule

The American tradition returns.  NFL Thanksgiving football is back again, in full, after last year we did not have the primetime game, which I will admit has been a nice addition.  Up here in Canada, we obviously have our Thanksgiving in October and haven’t figured out that this is the way it should be done.  On a Thursday with many people also getting Friday off to make a glorious 4-day weekend of food and football.  Yes, most of the Thanksgiving food is similar to what we have up here.  Turkey, gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes…it’s all there.  But I’d like to know the fucking asshole who decided to concoct the green bean casserole.  Whoever invented that should be shot and pissed on and not necessarily in that order.  You ever had a green bean casserole?  It’s fucking gross.  Like just do green beans.  Maybe add some almonds or garlic.  Simple.  Not this weird Frankendish.

Alright enough talk about food before I get too hungry and leave this post to eat and then nap and not get back to it.  ‘Murican Thanksgiving football schedule time!

There is no green bean casserole in these next few points

  • I promise.
  • Almost every CBS affiliate and every CTV affiliate is showing the Titans-Pats game in the early timeslot.  I’m not surprised at this at all since these are the only two teams showing any sort of consistency in the AFC and even then they’ve had their difficult moments.  I believe this is the first time all the CTV affiliates are on one of the early games but I’d have to check and I don’t feel like doing that right now.  You have to think the winner of this game is the odds-on favourite to get that all-important #1 seed in the AFC and the only bye in the first round.
  • Hey at least two of three Thanksgiving games look to be good ones.  The Bills and Saints are both trying to get back on track whereas the Raiders are just hoping to find the track.  The Cowboys are playing well but have the audacity to be in the NFC with four other really good teams.  Jerks.  And yes, the Bears play the Lions.  The only interesting part there will be if the Lions win their first game of the season.  I kind of hope they tie again.
  • Did you notice the primetime games?  One is OK but the other?  Woof.  The Browns-Ravens one should be good despite the fact the Browns have looked positively mediocre most of this season.  As for the Seahawks and Football Team, good lord.  This is a call back to the few years when Monday Night Football had an absolutely gross schedule.  These are the kinds of games they would get.  Oh well, not a whole lot else is on so I will probably tune in at least for a bit.
  • I don’t think I’ve ever seen the early games not spread out at all to different broadcast areas as they are this week.  A lot of “All affiliates” showing in the early timeslot.  I mean I’m not saying that some should be stuck with the Jets and Texans but still, it is nice to see as many games as possible.  Maybe that’s just me.
  • Three games, all in the early window, not being shown in Canada (unless Sunday Ticket, RedZone, blah, blah, blah).  Are any of the games great ones?  No, but that’s not the point, is it?

Alright now the playoff picture going into ‘Murican Stuff Your Face Day:

#1 – Tennessee #1 – Arizona
#2 – Baltimore #2 – Green Bay
#3 – New England #3 – Tampa Bay
#4 – Kansas City #4 – Dallas
Wild Cards: Wild Cards:
#5 – Cincinnati #5 – LA Rams
#6 – LA Chargers #6 – Minnesota
#7 – Buffalo #7 – New Orleans/San Francisco

Looks like the Niners have snuck into a tie for the final Wild Card spot.  Is it just me or are we going to have a not-so-good team in at least one of the Wild Card spots this season?  The fact that the Vikings, Saints, and 49ers are only a half-game ahead of Philadelphia and Carolina (oh my) but only a game ahead of Washington and Atlanta (good lord) tells you all you need to know.  Past the top five teams it is an absolute mess.  In the AFC?  It’s a different story…kind of.  There aren’t five good teams at the top.  It’s tough to say there’s even two.  And the teams just outside looking in isn’t exactly a murderer’s row of awesomeness.  The Steelers, Colts, Browns, Raiders and Broncos are all no more than a game out.  And no one is eliminated yet and we are almost into December.  That’s really what this is all about: keeping as many teams in the playoff race as possible.  I just hope it doesn’t dilute it too much.

Alright, enjoy the games everyone!  To any Americans who might read this blog (I don’t know why you would but I won’t stop you), have a Happy Thanksgiving and may your food coma be scheduled properly so you don’t miss any football.  Have a great weekend!

Yeah, he’s done – Week 9 NFL TV Schedule

HENRY_RUGGS (2)

Hey does our boy Henry look like he’s in bad shape?  If he thinks he’s in pain in this picture, ho boy, do I have news for him.  See, Henry Ruggs, Oakland, sorry, Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver decided to get in his car late Monday night/early Tuesday morning after drinking way too much.  He ends up slamming into another person’s car during the drive and this car basically burst into flames and the other driver died on the spot.  So now Mr. Ruggs is being charged with reckless driving and DUI resulting in death.  He could get anywhere from 8 to 26 years in jail for this.  And the Raiders released him Tuesday night to boot.  There is a chance he gets less time because this would be his first offense but avoiding jail time is pretty much impossible.  Now his career is over because he wouldn’t get an Uber/call a cab/call a friend/call the team to send a driver…anything but do what he did.  So he will be getting a different kind of playing time while in prison.  I hope he does not get a ton of leniency either.  It has always irked me when pro athletes get off the hook for a crime.  Like Dany Heatley who should have been put in jail, even if it was for six months.  But I digress.

Alright now to things a lot less drunk…the NFL TV schedule for Canadians.  I mean, not saying that people won’t be drinking certain alcoholic beverages watching football this Sunday…I might even do so!  Let’s get down to it.

Sunday/Monday Primetime

Tennessee at LA Rams Sunday, 8:20, NBC, TSN 3/5, CTV Two
Chicago at Pittsburgh Monday, 8:15, TSN 1/3/4/5

Non-Drunk Analysis

  • So we have 11 games during the day on Sunday and four of them aren’t being shown up here in Canada.  Not too bad, I guess.  But what bugs me a bit is what TSN decides to do.  There are three games with no coverage that TSN could choose and they choose the Broncos-Cowboys game, despite the fact it’s seen on CTV and CTV Two in certain parts of the country.  I’m not saying they should be forced to show the Texans-Dolphins game (that should be rated NSFW) but to pick a game that’s already pretty heavily shown here makes no sense.  I don’t know what TSN thinks.  I mean I get that they care about their own ratings but this still makes not a whole lot of sense.
  • It’s telling that the Cardinals-Niners game won’t get shown up here.  The Cards are still one of the best teams in the league and the 49ers aren’t bad.  But when the other option is AMERICA’S GAME OF THE WEEK between the (now Aaron-Rodgers-less) Packers and the (now-mediocre) Chiefs, you’re fighting a losing battle.  I kind of hope it’s a blowout (for the Chiefs since I have Mahomes, Kelce AND Williams on my fantasy team) so that it looks like a bad choice.
  • The Broncos-Cowboys game is also a cross-flex game for all those old school NFL viewers to know.  Thankfully, very few people care about that anymore.
  • TSN2 is the only channel getting the NFL on Sunday.  MLS, Formula 1, and everyone’s favourite, NASCAR, are on the other channels during the afternoon.  Oh and a Bloopers of the Month show.  Yeah.
  • Sunday Night Football finally getting a fantastic matchup this week after a few not-so-good ones.  Titans-Rams could be considered a possibly Super Bowl preview and it’s also a rematch of one of the greatest Super Bowl games of all-time.  Should be good (as most of the primetime games have been).

We would be at the halfway point of the season last year.  Now we are just before it because of the extra week of regular season games.  I still have to remember that teams don’t play sixteen games anymore.  Anyway, let’s break out the first playoff update of the season!

#1 – Tennessee #1 – Green Bay
#2 – Las Vegas #2 – Arizona
#3 – Baltimore #3 – Dallas
#4 – Buffalo #4 – Tampa Bay
Wild Cards: Wild Cards:
#5 – Cincinnati #5 – LA Rams
#6 – Pittsburgh #6 – New Orleans
#7 – LA Chargers #7 – Carolina

Look at the NFC.  LOOK AT IT!  The first Wild Card team is 7-1 and just added Von Miller.  The worst division leader is the defending Super Bowl champs and still a heavy favourite to win it all.  I don’t remember a conference that has had a top 6 teams that were that good around the halfway point of a season.  The Saints would be a half-game out of first overall in the AFC.  I mean it does drop off a cliff after them in the NFC rankings but still, if things keep going this way, December and January are going to be fun to watch in the NFC.  The AFC should also be exciting but really it will come down to what team that’s around .500 doesn’t make the playoffs when a bunch of other teams do.  When the Patriots, Chiefs and Broncos are only a half-game out of the Wild Card spot, you know things aren’t that great in the conference.

Alright, hope the weekend turns out well for all of you.  Enjoy the games everyone.

We got the Week Zero appetizer. Now it’s time for the Week 1 Main Course!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  Yes we have made it to what is really the official start of the college football season.  You can count Week Zero if you want, and I do, but let’s be honest: it’s merely a tiny appetizer to what’s ahead.  Like getting a platter of nachos before your meal except there are only four nacho chips on the platter with a tiny bit of melted cheese, a splatter of salsa and no jalapenos.  Week One…now that’s where it’s at.  A meatier schedule that really immerses us (finally) in what college football is all about.  It gets me back into doing sweet fuck all most Saturdays (if I can help it).  Great times.

So let’s get right down to brass tacks.  Here is the glorious Week 1 schedule (in high def).

Wednesday

US Canada
Jacksonville State at UAB 7:30 PM

Wednesday?  WEDNESDAY!  Man this is great.  Now we have SIX nights of college football during Week 1.  Just awesome.  I mean this game probably won’t be that good but at least it will be at UAB’s new stadium and not at Legion Field which looked like it was going to collapse at any moment.

UPDATE #2: This game is not in Birmingham.  I wonder if their new stadium isn’t ready yet.  Instead it is in Montgomery, site of the legendary Camellia Bowl.

UPDATE #3: Maybe I should have waited.  Thanks to Pete Thamel on Twitter, UAB’s new stadium opens in October.

Thursday

US Canada
Temple at Rutgers 6:30 PM
Boise State at UCF 7:00 PM
USF at NC State 7:30 PM
East Carolina vs. Appalachian State (in Charlotte) 7:30 PM
Weber State at #24 Utah 7:30 PM
#4 Ohio State at Minnesota 8:00 PM
Bowling Green at Tennessee 8:00 PM
Southern Utah at #25 Arizona State 10:30 PM

Pretty big time Group of Five start with Boise State heading to Orlando to face the Knights of UCF.  And FOX has an opening week Thursday game!  Noice!  Nice to see them jump into the pool.  Not like it’s a super competitive matchup but it’s put them in the weekday night game and that’s hugely important.  A couple of things I have to mention before you get too far into reading this.  I am still not quite sure that you can get the Pac-12 Network on DAZN here in Canada.  You’re supposed to be able to get the P12N games on there but looking at the site, that might not be the case.  I will have to dig further.  The other thing is that the specialty packs are, well, there.  I don’t see anything there in terms of a schedule yet but I assume these games will end up there as they normally do.

UPDATE #4: Temple-Rutgers has been moved to Saturday at Noon because of the weather issues in and around New York City and will still be able to be seen on BTN.

UPDATE #5: Thanks to reader Dan, we now know that the Pac-12 Network is not on DAZN.  But it’s free (for now) on their YouTube page.  Nice!

Friday

US Canada
#10 North Carolina at Virginia Tech 6:00 PM
Old Dominion at Wake Forest 7:00 PM
Duke at Charlotte 7:00 PM
Michigan State at Northwestern 9:00 PM
Northern Colorado at Colorado 9:00 PM

OK this is better than Thursday night…but not by much.  North Carolina starts what could be their biggest campaign ever with a tough one in Blacksburg.  We get a nice TSN doubleheader with ESPN’s stupid three-hour windows.  They just never learn.  Also, if you are a glutton for punishment, check out Duke face Charlotte.  I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the 49ers (not the San Francisco kind) beat Dook in what would be considered an upset but not a huge one.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#2 Oklahoma at Tulane (in Norman) Noon
Colgate at Boston College Noon
Fordham at Nebraska Noon
Holy Cross at UConn Noon
Western Michigan at Michigan Noon
Army at Georgia State Noon
#19 Penn State at #12 Wisconsin Noon
ULM at Kentucky Noon

A lot of games here.  PSU-Wisky is a pretty massive game to start is off on Week 1.  The winner here has the inside track on what could be a special Big Ten season (if they can beat Ohio State).  We shall see if OU-Tulane will be played in New Orleans as the people of that area are dealing with Hurricane Ida as we speak.  UPDATE: No.  No it won’t be.  It will be in Norman.  And will Scott Frost be fired?  If they somehow lose to Fordham then Frost might be fired during the post-game interview on the field.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
Fresno State at #11 Oregon 2:00 PM
#1 Alabama vs. #14 Miami (in Atlanta) 3:30 PM
#17 Indiana at #18 Iowa 3:30 PM
Marshall at Navy 3:30 PM
West Virginia at Maryland 3:30 PM
UMass at Pittsburgh 4:00 PM
Louisiana Tech at Mississippi State 4:00 PM
Central Michigan at Missouri 4:00 PM
#23 Louisiana at #21 Texas 4:30 PM
San Jose State at #15 USC 5:00 PM

Whoa now THIS is impressive for Week 1.  Bama-Miami, if close, could be an amazing game.  Indy-Iowa is a massive get for the Big Ten Network.  The best game of the weekend could be FOX’s afternoon affair as the Ragin Cajuns look to pull off….I’m going to call it a VERY minor upset if they beat the Longhorns and only because it’s in Austin.  Louisiana is that good and will be part of the Group of Five story all season.  Don’t sleep on the Spartans heading to LA to play USC (if you get Pac-12 Network), WVU-Maryland could be quite close if Tagovailoa Dos can carry the Terps and LaTech heading to CLANGAland could be sneaky good.  A lot of channel surfing/stream switching in this timeslot for sure.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Syracuse at Ohio 7:00 PM
Texas Tech vs. Houston (in NRG Stadium) 7:00 PM
#5 Georgia vs. #3 Clemson (in Charlotte) 7:30 PM
Northern Illinois at Georgia Tech 7:30 PM
UTSA at Illinois 7:30 PM
William & Mary at Virginia 7:30 PM
Florida Atlantic at #13 Florida 7:30 PM
Kent State at #6 Texas A&M 8:00 PM
Montana at #20 Washington 8:00 PM
#16 LSU at UCLA 8:30 PM

One game, obviously, is going to carry most of the hype.  UGA-Clemson is a Game of the Year candidate but make no mistake about it: the loser is not out of the College Football Playoff picture by a longshot.  The loser of this one could run the table and be as high as the #2 seed going into the CFP.  UCLA showed that it will not be a pushover and that LSU should be ready for the Bruins.  Sure it would be an upset if UCLA won but not a huge one and if they can pull it off, Chip Kelly might finally strike fear into the rest of the Pac-12 South.  Glad to see most of the networks showing games in primetime unlike 2019 (I won’t discuss 2020 because that’s not fair).  It means we get that good game on FOX.  It means TTU-UH could be a lot of fun to watch and we get to see it.  It means we get to see if Florida Atlantic and Kent State can follow up a good year with another good year.  By this point we will all be on college football overload but I have faith we can all get through it and plow into the late night sked.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
New Mexico State at San Diego State 10:30 PM
BYU vs. Arizona (in Las Vegas) 10:30 PM
Utah State at Washington State 11:00 PM

OK so it kind of falls off a cliff here.  Can’t win ’em all.  Here’s hoping at least one of these games is close since, on paper, none of them look to be.

Sunday

US Canada
Jackson State vs. Florida A&M (in Miami) 3:00 PM
Grambling vs. Tennessee State (in Canton) 4:00 PM
Fort Valley State vs. Tuskegee (in Montgomery) 7:00 PM
#9 Notre Dame at Florida State 7:30 PM

A lot of FCS action on the Sunday before Labour Day.  Smart work by the HBCU schools to do this as it should get a lot of eyeballs on their games.  I wonder if we will get the game in Canton here since the NFL Network can be a bit funny with their schedule when it comes to what Canadians get to watch.  It feels like Florida State could cause the Irish some problems.  Let’s all hope so or else it’s an early bedtime for everyone.

Monday

US Canada
Ole Miss at Louisville 8:00 PM

This may not look great but Ole Miss should be quite a good team this year.  I mean at least their offense should be fun to watch with Lane Kiffin as the head coach.  I’m glad the CFL (and TSN) ditched the stupid idea of putting the Labour Day Classic (Eastern edition) in primetime.  Fucking dumb.  Ti-Cats-Argos should be on at 1 and Eskimos Elks-Stamps on at around 4:30 or so.  That’s tradition so keep it that way because there’s no reason not to.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Georgia vs. Clemson (in Charlotte) (7:30, ABC/TSN2) – This is one of the Game of the Year candidates and is a relatively easy choice for Week 1 Game of the Week.  Could it be a national championship preview?  Some think so.  Not me, but I know some do.  This is where we get to see if D.J. Uiagalelei wasn’t a flash in the pan after his two games last season.  We get to see if J.T. Daniels (what is it with initialed quarterback first names?) is the real deal and a potential Heisman candidate.  We also get to see two of the whitest, southernest coaches around.  Now this is college football at it’s finest.

Penn State at Wisconsin (Noon, FOX) – BIG NOON SATURDAY gets a damn good game to start their season.  I am somewhat positive this is where Gus and Joel will be but it’s not a guarantee with another great FOX game right afterwards (and another great one after that).  This is probably going to be somewhat underhyped but is extremely important in the Big Ten scheme of things as if Ohio State trips up at some point this season, one of these two teams could be the one sneaking past into the top spot.  After years of crap Week 1s, FOX really has hit it out of the park this year.  I don’t expect this all season but at least it’s a good start.

Indiana at Iowa (3:30, BTN) – I’m not lying.  BTN.  The Big Ten Network.  Every year this network gets one game that would easily be on either FOX or ESPN and somehow they nab it.  The good thing about the way the Big Ten Network contract is structured because every team has to show up at least twice with one game being a conference game.  This could be the closest game of the day and we shall see if the Hoosiers are still climbing or if Iowa will somehow Ferentz their way to a victory to open their season.

Louisiana at Texas (4:30, FOX) – I’m serious when I said above this would not be much of an upset if Louisiana won.  The Ragin Cajuns are a serious contender for the single Group of Five New Year’s Six spot (although don’t be surprised if two or even three teams really push the envelope this season).  And we all know what opening weekend Texas games are like.  Really wild and completely wacky doesn’t quite cover it.

LSU at UCLA (8:30, FOX) – Yeah, all three FOX tripleheader games in the GOTW section.  First time ever?  I would check but I’m lazy so I’m going to say no, it has never happened before.  If the Bruins’ performance in Week Zero is any indication as to what this team could be like, this game will be a ton of fun.  Then again they were playing a Hawaii team that looked like it wasn’t ready to start the game at all.  The Tigers lost their starting quarterback before the season began so it could be an interesting journey for Ed Orgeron’s team this season (plus we may see Coach Eaux on the hot seat amazingly enough if things go south).

Honourable mention: North Carolina at Virginia Tech (Friday, 6:00, TSN2); Notre Dame at Florida State (Sunday, 7:30, ABC); San Jose State at USC (5:00, DAZN)

Some gambling fun and games

Oh man, this fuckery again.  OK look I don’t pick against the spread, just straight up win or loss.  I also advise you never to copy these picks.  Yes I may be fully correct once but after like 100 misses you’d lose a lot of money.  Let’s go:

Notre Dame over Florida State

Texas over Louisiana (but it will be close)

Clemson over Georgia

Alabama over Miami

North Carolina over Virginia Tech

LSU over UCLA

USC over San Jose State

Indiana over Iowa (slight upset?)

Duke over Charlotte

UCF over Boise State

Tennessee over Bowling Green (I might regret this)

SIX straight days of college football starts tonight!  I believe I am ready to go.  College football gives you Week Zero to get a bit acclimated and then BAM!  It’s go time!  I’m struggling with specialty pack information as I haven’t seen this little information in years on it.  Saying that, it’s pretty easy to outline what games will probably appear on them.  As for the Pac-12 Network/DAZN situation, I am looking into it and hoping to get an answer before the first potential P12N game in Canada this year Thursday night.  I will definitely hit the Twitter machine and try to stay in my lane (college football, NFL and a little general sports sprinkled in) and not venture into Politicsland or Vaccineville, two places no one should ever go to when dealing with Twitter.

As per usual on this blog, we will soon get into the CFB schedule/NFL schedule/watch some damn football/recap/rinse/repeat carousel.  No NFL recaps since a) I really barely have time to do this blog so doing NFL recaps would be tough and b) there are plenty of places to find those recaps out there and they aren’t hard to find.  I’m glad to be back.  Glad to have all of you back.  It’s going to be a fun season.  I can feel it.  Have a great week everyone and enjoy Week 1!
