Short Post About the National Championship(s)

Alright a short post about the national championships coming up. That’s right…national championships. Two of them to be exact.

Let’s start with the one that’s on today. For some unknown reason, someone decided that the FCS Championship should be on in the middle of the NFL’s final regular season week. Are they fucking stupid? I don’t need anyone to answer that since I know the answer already. This game could have been on Saturday and been done before the first Saturday NFL game even starts. But no. Instead it’s today at 2:00 on ABC and TSN+.

The Grizzlies of Montana face off against the juggernaut South Dakota State Jackrabbits. What the hell is in the water in the Dakotas to produce all these good football teams? Here’s hoping it’s a close one since SDSU hasn’t seen a close game in quite a while.

As for the other championship, the College Football Playoff National Championship, it airs on Monday night on TSN 1, 3 and 4. It also appears on TSN5 after the women’s hockey game is over. So around 8:30 or just into the second quarter. TSN+ will have a bunch of alternate broadcasts of the game, including the All-22 view, Skycast and the Pat McAfee Show version. So whichever way you want to watch the game, it’s there for you. I still think they should bring back the Coach’s Filmroom but provide an open bar for the coaches. That alone would bring a lot of entertainment I’m sure.

UPDATE: I forgot to post the time of the game! It starts at 7:30 although I’m sure you already knew that.

The game itself should be a good one. Will it approach how insanely good the semi-finals were? That would be something. Now who does the Bossman think will win the whole thing? Well, how about we look back at what I said in August about this game:

I had Michigan beating Bama in the semis. Well I’ll be damned. Might as well go for the whole thing and say that I am sticking with Big Blue to win the title over a different type of Dawg. And yes, I think Harbaugh heads back to the NFL after this. Remember, I predicted he would leave before all the shit he has had to endure (some of it partially his own doing) and the suspensions he had to deal with (meaning his own…two of them…for six games total). So I think he is a lock to leave if the Wolverines win the title. Score? Let’s go 34-30 Michigan.

So for the last time this college football season…enjoy the games everyone!

Hey, Hey, It’s the All-New Bossman Top 26 with a Special Bonus!

What’s the special bonus? It’s bowl projections! And not just any bowl projections. My annual Chaos Bowl Projections. This should be good. Or really stupid. Either way, let’s get going with the Bossman Top 26 after this past week’s games:

#1Georgia (9-0)
#2Washington (9-0)
#3Michigan (9-0)
#4Alabama (8-1)
#5Ohio State (9-0)
#6Florida State (9-0)
#7Oregon (8-1)
#8Texas (8-1)
#9Ole Miss (8-1)
#10Penn State (8-1)
#11Louisville (8-1)
#12Utah (7-2)
#13Oklahoma State (7-2)
#14Oregon State (7-2)
#15Tennessee (7-2)
#16Tulane (8-1)
#17LSU (6-3)
#18Missouri (7-2)
#19James Madison (9-0)
#20Oklahoma (7-2)
#21Liberty (9-0)
#22Notre Dame (7-3)
#23Kansas (7-2)
#24Arizona (6-3)
#25USC (7-3)
#26North Carolina (7-2)

Yes, I have Washington at #2. At this point, they may be the most complete team in college football but I do wonder if they could beat UGA on a neutral field. Those two teams are two of the five who, if they win out, are locks to be in the College Football Playoff. The other three are Florida State, Ohio State and Michigan. tOSU and Big Blue play each other so no way that those two could both be 12-0 at the end of the season. Can you imagine if they still had ties in college football? You think the debates are horrible at this point? They’d be a million times worse. At the Group of Five level, I already mentioned it but I will say it again: Tulane runs the table, they are in for the New Year’s Six spot. No questions asked they go to either the Peach or Cotton Bowl. If they lose, even in the conference championship, it brings a bunch of teams back in to the fray, including Air Force, Fresno State, Liberty, Troy, SMU, Memphis, Toledo and, yes, even UNLV. Remember, the Green Wave faces UTSA to finish off their regular season. The Roadrunners could do a bunch of teams a favour with a win. Finally, back to the CFP for a minute. If we don’t see four unbeatens at the end, then the arguments will pile up as to who gets the final spot. If Michigan or Ohio State are the only one of those five not to be undefeated, then the argument may be mostly clear to put the loser of The Game in the #4 spot. You would get a lot of pissed off Alabama and Texas fans but the argument would probably be sound. Besides, The Committee will almost always take a Big Ten or SEC team over any other conference. Just the way it is (and probably always will be).

Now we get to the fun part…kind of. OK not fun for some fans and very frustrating for some others because this is complete chaos. Like over the top insanity. Off the rails ridiculousness. This won’t happen, I can assure you. Now, some of it may happen though so it’s not like this is completely crazy (but it mostly is cocaine crazy). Alright let’s get going with this bonkers exercise.

Sugar BowlCFP #1 vs. CFP #4Louisville vs. Kansas
Rose BowlCFP #2 vs. CFP #3Oregon State vs. Tennessee

I’m sure that’s the look you are giving your screen right now. You’re thinking I have lost my fucking mind. I assure you I have not gone insane. Let me just give you an explanation as to how we have found ourselves at this point:

  • Florida State loses to both Miami and Florida. Only one of those games counts as a conference loss, obviously, so FSU is still in the ACC Championship game. Louisville ends up running the table in convincing fashion to become one of only two Power Five teams with only one loss (we will get to that later on in this post). The Cardinals somehow go into the title game as slight favourites and beat the Noles in a close one to capture the ACC title and the #1 ranking, putting them in the Sugar Bowl.
  • Oregon and Washington both end up losing to a resurgent Oregon State team as the Beavs (and Jonathan Smith especially) rebound from that absolutely awful playcall against Arizona which at the time looked like it cost them a lot. The Beavs also beat Stanford by about 50 and qualify for the Pac-12 Championship. The Huskies lose to Utah but the Ducks lose to USC and then USC loses to UCLA! The insanity means U-Dub still gets to the Pac-12 Championship but now it’s almost a pickem with the Beavers. Oregon State blows Washington out to get the #2 seed.
  • Alright now, the Big Ten. This is where it gets a bit iffy. Iowa runs the table, scoring approximately 12 points a game to easily win the Big Ten West. The East becomes a shitshow. Michigan loses to both Penn State and Ohio State. Good news for the Buckeyes, right? Wrong because they lose to both (get this) Michigan State and Maryland. Maybe Maserati Marv was injured. No problem. Penn State’s got this. Wrong again! They fall to mighty Rutgers! Ho boy. In the end, Ohio State is the highest ranked of all the (now) 2-loss East Division teams. Then they get beat in a defensive struggle by the Hawkeyes, 12-10.
  • But we still have the SEC. Yeah, let’s discuss that. Georgia loses to Ole Miss this coming weekend, then Tennessee the following weekend. They blast Georgia Tech out of the water but it doesn’t matter because Tennessee runs the table, including that win over the Dawgs. They demolish Vandy to win the East in ridiculous fashion. They face Alabama who loses the Iron Bowl, meaning their path to the CFP is now very rocky. The Vols beat Bama convincingly and move into the #3 spot. This might piss off Ole Miss. They also run the table and are the only other one-loss Power Five school. Problem is they lost to Alabama meaning they couldn’t play in the conference championship which would allow the winner of that game to leapfrog them, which they will. Question now is will Ole Miss get in at #4?
  • That brings us to the final Power Five conference, the Big XII. Texas shits the bed the rest of the way. Quinn Ewers’ absence catches up with them and they lose winnable games to TCU and Iowa State. This should allow Oklahoma or Oklahoma State to sneak into the top spot. Instead, it’s Kansas who wins out and gets in. They will face Oklahoma State who, despite a loss to BYU, gets in just ahead of West Virginia thanks to their victory over the Mountaineers earlier in the season. Kansas mops the floor with the Cowboys and The Committee rewards them with the #4 spot, ahead of the Ole Miss Rebels and a pissed off Lane Kiffin.

Of course the final year before the 12-team playoff has to have some controversy, no? I mean this is insane but wouldn’t it be fucking awesome if even half these results happened? We’d be talking about this season in the same vain as 2007. ESPN and FOX would have field days with this stuff.

So now that we have the CFP done and dusted, let’s see what the New Year’s Six now looks like.

Fiesta BowlCFP at-large vs. CFP at-large/G-5 #1Utah vs. Iowa
Orange BowlACC Champ vs Big Ten/Notre Dame/SECFlorida State vs. Ole Miss
Peach BowlCFP at-large vs. CFP at-large/G-5 #1Penn State vs. Alabama
Cotton BowlCFP at-large vs. CFP at-large/G-5 #1Michigan vs. UTSA

Well this is some kind of messed up but almost feels way less messed up than the CFP. Here we go:

  • Already explained Ole Miss and their #5 spot. I could see a ton of debate and SECtards would definitely want two teams in the big dance no matter what (or more like think that the conference always deserves two teams in the top four) but I am sticking with this. The Rebels being dropped to #5 puts them in the Orange Bowl.
  • Utah is #6. They are the second best team to not go to a conference championship behind Ole Miss and their two losses will to the two Oregon teams so that will look pretty good. They slot into the Fiesta Bowl.
  • Penn State will be #7 after their shocking loss to Rutgers kills their Big Ten Championship hopes. They head to the Peach Bowl.
  • A bit more controversy would be Michigan being at #8. Sure their two losses will be to Penn State and Ohio State but I see them both being big losses, unlike Penn State losing a close one to Rutgers. Either way, the two losses would take them out of the Big Ten East title race and have them going to the Cotton Bowl.
  • Remember I told you Iowa won the Big Ten Championship? I could see many of you wanting to forget that. So yeah, they will now head to the Fiesta Bowl to face Utah. Interesting matchup.
  • The ACC has to send their next best team after Louisville ended up number one. In the end, Florida State is probably the only option and they should be high enough in the rankings to warrant the Orange Bowl spot opposite Ole Miss.
  • So who is the best Power Five team left? It’s down to, get this, Alabama and Ohio State. The Committee will be damned if they do, damned if they don’t. I think they go with the Tide in the end but the debates, oh the debates.
  • Finally, the Group of Five spot. Liberty fans will scream about being the only undefeated team in FBS and I can understand that. Their schedule, however, was so ridiculously easy compared to pretty much every other team in FBS. I think they do end up in the Top 25 but so does UNLV and UTSA who both win their respective conference championships. I give the nod to the Roadrunners to head to the Cotton Bowl to face Michigan.

Good God that was ridiculous. Why do I do it each year? To see how far I can push the system. And I have determined it can only be pushed so far. Next year, if I do this, I will have to adjust how it’s done for the new playoff. The times they are a-changin’. Enjoy the rest of your week everyone!

Oh man, here we go again

It felt like things were calm. We were all lulled into this. It was just the eye of the storm. Sure the wind wasn’t moving but about 200 metres away, a cow just went flying headlong into a barn.

What am I talking about? Realignment, of course! Another shoe has dropped…OK let me use a different analogy. Sorry Deion. We have another big move as Colorado will be going back to the Big XII starting next season. And that probably won’t be all. The rumours have at least one of Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Oregon or Washington following the Buffaloes. Or, if no other schools leave the Pac-12, the Big XII is more than willing to dip into the American Conference (hello SMU, Memphis, Tulane) or even way out east…yes, UConn! And maybe once the Pac-12 (or more like Pac-9) gets their act together, they can start bringing in teams from the Group of Five. The same teams from the American would be in play, especially SMU. Also, the Mountain West would be watching closely as San Diego State, Boise State and perhaps Colorado State and UNLV could be looked at. There will be a lot of meetings in the next month or so to determine where this all leads.

For now let’s focus on what this post was supposed to be (and still will be). It’s time for the Power Five conference predictions. This will give a better indication on how I think things will go during this season. So let’s dive right in!

Changes are coming soon for the Ess Ee Cee. Texas and Oklahoma join the conference next season. Also, no more SEC on CBS after this year. Everything moves to ABC and ESPN. And finally, no divisions. Halle-fucking-lujah.

As for this year, all the talk is about Georgia and doing something no team has done (fully) in the AP Poll era: win three national championships in a row. It’s not like they will fall apart, despite the fact they lost their starting quarterback and a bunch of other players in the NFL Draft. Then again, I’m sure Kirby Smart has looked them all dead in the eye and told them “Everyone thinks you are going to go 5-7 and lose to Vanderbilt. Prove them wrong!” And they will believe it because college football head coaches are just a notch-and-a-half below cult leaders in the pecking order of how much they can make their “followers” drink their Kool-Aid.

Remember, though, there are other teams in the conference as well. Like those lovable underdogs from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and the team that just reeks of success (in the classroom and on the baseball diamond), Vanderbilt. And eleven other teams. Want to find out how I think they will do? OK. I will do that. Just for you.

Just For You

  • You might think I am crazy for having UGA not run the table. I do think they will lose a regular season game and it will be to those upstart Tennessee Volunteers. It won’t keep them from winning the division though as you can see I have those same Vols losing two conference games during the regular season.
  • As for the SEC West, though, Bama will once again rule the roost….as long as they figure out their quarterback situation. I am thinking they will and will go undefeated and be #1 in the nation going into conference championship weekend. If they don’t get their QB situation settled…well, maybe they lose two games? Three? It’s not like they will fall to 6-6.
  • I could see South Carolina or last year’s SEC West champs, LSU, making a bit of a run this time around. They have the top two quarterbacks in the SEC and could each put up piles of points. Watch for the Cocks’ game against Georgia early on in the season and LSU’s post-Halloween trip to Bryant-Denny to face the Tide. Upsets in either of those games will seriously upset the apple cart.
  • Look, the Gators were barely .500 with who I think may be one of the most overhyped quarterbacks in recent memory. I don’t think Anthony Richardson was that great. And now they don’t even have him. Unless every other part of the roster improved (it didn’t), how do people expect this team to bounce back and all of a sudden become an eight or nine win team? Spoiler alert: they won’t.
  • I have Mississippi State at 6-6. They will do just enough to get a bowl game. I wonder how tough it will be after the loss of Mike Leach but I can see them straightening things out just in time late in the season.
  • As for the SEC Championship, SURPRISE! I have the Dawgs beating the Tide and creating a massive clusterfuck in the final College Football Playoff rankings. Fun times!
  • Eleven bowl teams from the SEC with two juuuuuust on the outside. That’s insane and I don’t think I will be that far off with this prediction. Next year could be even crazier with Texas and Oklahoma joining the conference that just means more.

Man have things really changed in terms of where you will see Big Ten games this season. Gone are ABC and ESPN. In is NBC and CBS. This is gonna feel weird the first time I see it. And maybe the next few times as well. I will get used to it at some point. Now if you want the opportunity to watch every Big Ten game, better find a way to get FOX Sports One and Peacock otherwise you will be shit out of luck to watch potential bangers like Northwestern-Purdue and Indiana-Rutgers (if they end up there and not the Big Ten Network).

Alright, let’s get into the final conference predictions before the B1G gives a big Fuck You to geography and brings in USC and UCLA.

Geogpraphy, Go Eat a Dick

  • Look, I know some might look at the Big Ten East standings and think I am a bit crazy. I am not. Although that is what a crazy person would tell you. Yep, a three-way tie at the top at 8-1 between Big Blue, tOSU and PSU. Because each team will be 1-1 against the other two, the CFP Rankings will decide the winner. I believe the Wolverines will somehow win that. And yes, I think Ohio State also loses to Notre Dame. O-H! I-No.
  • If Sparty doesn’t make it to a bowl game, they may end up giving Mel Tucker the Herm Edwards treatment and fire him before he can leave the playing surface one game. I get they have a tough division but they should be able to do well enough against the rest of their schedule to get back in the postseason after last year’s debacle.
  • No, I don’t have Wisconsin winning the West division. Meaning I am different than almost every expert out there. Also, there’s the fact I’m not an expert but I digress. Again I have a damn three-way tie but no need to look at the rankings for this one as I believe the Gophers will Row the Fucking Boat all the way to Indianapolis after beating both Wisky and the high-octane Iowa Hawkeyes. See what I did there? Yeah, I don’t care that the Hawkeyes have a new quarterback in town. Until Kirk tells his son to do better, Iowa will be pushing for some 7-6 victories. Sorry. 8-6. Two field goals and a late safety to win.
  • Nebraska will be better but I think the Huskers are a season away from getting back to the top of the West…just in time for the West to just not exist anymore.
  • As for Northwestern…man. What a shitshow. Look, I played a lot of sports earlier in my life and did so at the university level. Are there fun little pranks and stupid things the rookies have to do? Sometimes. But it’s usually harmless. Carrying bags, standing up during a team dinner to get embarrassed by singing some Mariah Carey song, dumb things like that. Not getting fucking dry humped in some cultish fashion by weirdos in robes. What the fuck is wrong with that school? And yes, it’s not just the football program. Sounds like at least half the teams there have serious issues. Ugh.
  • Now let’s get crazy. Yeah! The Big Ten Championship will…OK who am I kidding. It won’t be close. I have Michigan plowing through Minny to clinch their spot, yet again, in the College Football Playoff.

Might as well call this the Stable Conference…for now. Just nothing happening here which is just fine for most of the teams in the ACC. Status quo isn’t a bad thing. There are some changes with where you will see games. The CW…yes, the C-Fucking-W, will have an ACC game during most of the weeks of the season. You can take the ACC out of Jefferson-Pilot (or Raycom) but you can’t take the Jefferson-Pilot (or Raycom) out of the ACC. Or something like that.

So before this conference possibly gets pillaged by the Big Ten and SEC, let’s get to the predictions followed by some deep tissue massage and/or analysis.

    Conference Overall
    W L W L
Clemson 8 0 12 10
Florida State 7 1 11 1
North Carolina 6 2 9 3
Pittsburgh 5 3 8 4
Louisville 5 3 8 4
Duke 4 4 8 4

Boston College 2 6 5 7
Virginia 2 6 4 8
Georgia Tech 2 6 4 8
Virginia Tech 0 8 1 11

Deep Tissue Massage and/or Analysis

  • I should book a massage. My back is in horrible shape.
  • Some may scoff at me having Clemson going undefeated this season. They have the schedule to do it and if Cade Klubnik is as good as he can be this could relatively easily happen. If Klubnik struggles…well then this entire set of standings might need to be scrubbed from existence.
  • Reader Gord will like where I have Florida State. This team could be scary good. And at the very least, they will be near the top of the ACC standings this season. Mike Norvell has done a great job getting this team back to what it was like during the Jimbo Fisher days. I had my doubts about him but I have to admit he has been the right guy to right the ship in Tallahassee.
  • Hey did you notice? NO DIVISIONS! I love it.
  • Don’t be surprised that if Clemson or FSU stumbles that there are no shortage of teams that could get one of the two ACC title game slots. A list of seven teams could pull off a couple of upsets and be at the top and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise. A slight surprise sure. Maybe a slightly bigger surprise if it was Miami or NC State. But not a massive surprise.
  • Poor Virginia Tech. I think this will be their worst team since before Frank Beamer graced Blacksburg. It feels like it has been forever since the Hokies were contenders. It was only seven years ago when they were in the ACC Championship and almost upset the eventual national champions, Clemson. This team is pretty bad in almost every aspect of the game and the schedule will not be helpful to them. Other than Old Dominion I don’t see them winning any other game and the Monarchs have given VT all sorts of fits the past few years.
  • Look for a tiny bit of a bounce back from Virginia. Just them taking the field after what happened last year is a win in my books.
  • For that ACC title game, how about another game that will turn everything on its head. Yep, I think the Noles will get revenge for a regular season loss by inching out the Tigers. Chaos!

OK it’s about time the Big XII rebrands. They will have at least thirteen teams by the time the 2024 season starts and it may be as high as sixteen. So change the fucking name. They have the rights to the Big Fourteen and Big Sixteen so use one of those. It would be easy. Find a graphic design student at Kansas and have them do a new logo. Easy peasy. Why do I have to come up with everything?

Where was I? Oh that’s right, predictions. Let’s see if this conference will go all Pac-12 and cannibalize itself or if they can see a team get to the CFP once again. Also, Texas and Oklahoma will be trying their best to leave the conference on a high note much to the chagrin of the rest of the schools in the conference. So here are the Big XII standings predictions, followed by Belly Expansions.

    Conference Overall

Texas 8 1 10 2

Belly Expansions

  • No I don’t mean pregnancy. I mean eating a big meal and having to loosen the ol’ belt or just unbuckle the pants altogether. Funny enough, people in the restaurant don’t appreciate that.
  • Let’s start at the bottom. There won’t be one truly bad team. There will be a bunch of below-average ones. West Virginia, Iowa State, Houston, Cincinnati and BYU could all finish last and I am sure no one would bat an eye.
  • I see the Longhorns making their final Big XII season a special one. They have the team, the schedule and the head coach (I think) to be the top team in this conference this season. The only question will be can Quinn Ewers hold off Arch Manning. Will one of them transfer in the offseason? Remember, when you have two starting quarterbacks, you have none. I think.
  • How about this lukewarm take: Kansas State will be good again. Yeah really going out on a limb there Bossman. This team has become so steady-as-she-goes it’s almost boring. The people in the Little Apple are fine with this.
  • I do think one of the newcomers will make a bowl game and that team will be UCF. I think they are the most prepared of the newbies coming into this conference. But make no mistake about it: all four teams will be good at various points over the next few years.
  • I can’t see Oklahoma taking enough of a leap to get to the Big XII Championship. Nor do I think the Horned Frogs of TCU have the, uh, toads? to make it back to the conference title game. Good seasons for both, yes, but not great.
  • The Longhorns should win the conference title game in their final season in the Big XII. Will this get them into the CFP or will it “relegate” them to the New Year’s Six? I think you can tell from my predictions so far but you will know for sure in a different post.

So where are we going to be able to watch Pac-12 games in the future? Who the hell knows. My money is on PBS.

But seriously, the Pac-12 is quickly dropping from the Conference of Champions to almost a Group of Five conference. They are losing USC and UCLA next year to the Big Ten. They knew that already. The bombshell of Colorado leaving now has them at nine teams starting the 2024 season. And it may not end there. The only schools I haven’t heard potentially leaving are Oregon State and Washington State. That’s not to say all these rumours will be correct but I will be pretty surprised if no more teams leave for the Big XII before next season. It’s sad for a conference that really started their slide once Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL. Thanks a bunch, Peter.

Prediction time! No divisions which is one thing they are ahead of the game with, starting that last year. Let’s get to those divisionless predictions followed by some California Nightmarin’.

    Conference Overall
    W L W L
USC 8 1 10 2
Utah 7 2 9 3
Oregon 7 2 9 3
Oregon State 7 2 10 2
Washington State 6 3 8 4
Washington 6 3 9 3
UCLA 5 4 8 4
Colorado 3 6 4 8
California 2 7 4 8
Arizona 2 7 4 8
Arizona State 1 8 3 9
Stanford 0 9 2 10

California Nightmarin’

  • No state will have it better this year in the Pac-12 than the state of Oregon. Both the Ducks and the Beavers look to be serious contenders and only need the ball to bounce their way one extra time to maybe get to the Pac-12 Championship. And considering the way that title game has gone, who knows what may happen after that.
  • The strongest team, though, should be USC. They have Caleb Williams coming back to try and do what no one other than some guy named Archie has ever done, and that’s win two Heisman Trophies. The hope there is that the sting of the two season-ending losses will motivate them to push themselves that final step into the CFP.
  • OK look, I know you see Washington in sixth place and you are wondering what the fuck is wrong with me. This is another case where the schedule is just flat-out against them. A slightly easier schedule and I might put this team at eleven or even, dare I say it, twelve wins. It will be that close at the top of the conference.
  • On the other hand, I am sure no will think I’m crazy for putting Stanford in last place. It’s been a long time since the Cardinal have been this bad and it doesn’t look like they will be ready for bowl action for another year at least.
  • I think I was fair putting Colorado at 4-8 for this season and playing fairly meaningful football going into November. There seems to be two schools of thought with this team. One section thinks Coach Prime has done wonders and with all the fresh faces in the lineup it will push the team over the line and into bowl-eligibility territory. The other section thinks the entire program is overhyped and they will win maybe two games. I am in the middle on this. This team won’t go bowling this year. That would be too much of a leap. But they should win more games than they did last year. If not, what the hell was all this hoopla for?
  • As for the Pac-12 title game, USC gets the Pac-12 Championship they probably should have won last year. Problem is that by this point there will be a lot of teams in the mix for those four College Football Playoff spots and in typical Pac-12 fashion, the league will have cannabilized itself again and missed out on the CFP again.

There you go! You now have a complete set of Bossman conference predictions. Next up, is kind of the wrap-up post where I put everything in a nice, neat little ball and let you know who I believe will win the whole damn deal. Have a great week everyone!

The amount of coaches, both head and otherwise, shitcanned so far this year has hit a staggering amount.  I get that it’s been the second kind of wacky year in a row for college football (for very different reasons) but you have to wonder if many coaches got a bit of a COVID exemption, like some of the super seniors that they coach (or used to coach).  So let’s go through what’s happened so far this season.  Strap in.

  • Remember way back in September when Captain Bonus, Randy Edsall, decided to retire and then the next day resigned instead?  Seems like so long ago.  It was 64 days ago.  Barely over two months.
  • How about when Clay Helton was finally fired at USC?  For many of the Trojan faithful, it was about four years too late.
  • But Helton wasn’t out of work for long.  He was recently hired to replace Chad Lunsford who had been fired by Georgia Southern back in late September.  Probably a good spot for him.
  • Ed Orgeron was fired because he likes sexing up hot women in Baton Rouge rather than coaching LSU after he divorced his wife.  Thinking with your dick is fine in certain situations, this may not be one of them.  Then again, the buyout will be ridiculous for him.  Good shit.
  • You knew this was coming as soon as you heard the backstory.  Nick Rolovich’s firing was a surprise to no one…except maybe Nick Rolovich.
  • This one was a bit of a shocker.  Matt Wells was fired after Kansas State came back to beat his Texas Tech team dropping them to *checks notes* 5-2?  What?  Now the Red Raiders have hired a successful high school coach to replace him.  This is either seriously stupid or seriously brilliant.
  • The end of an era in Fort Worth as Gary Patterson was let go.  Some thought he should have been allowed to finish the season but with this new early signing period many teams who have fired their head coaches are going to want to get their new guy sooner rather than later to take advantage of this signing period.
  • Tom Arth was fired.  He was 3-24 at Akron.  I know it’s Akron but good lord.
  • But again, it could be worse.  Walt Bell dropped to 2-23 in his tenure at UMass after they lost to Rhode Island.  Maybe this team should be not long for FBS.

Now, many, including myself, wondered if Scott Frost would be on this list by the end of the season.  Instead, he got his contract restructured and he will be back for 2022.  Now his buyout has been slashed in half and his yearly contract went down by a million bucks so it’s not like he made out like a bandit.  He celebrated this by firing four assistants.  Maybe bringing in a better offensive coordinator will help and with the extra money, they might be able to afford it.  But Frosty the Coachman’s hot seat will be molten lava if the Huskers get off to a bad start next season (or finish this season on a losing streak).

OK enough coaching crap, on to the schedule!

Wednesday

US Canada
Toledo at Bowling Green 7:00 PM
Ball State at Northern Illinois 7:00 PM
Kent State at Central Michigan 8:00 PM

Gotta love Midweek MACtion.  Nothing better than cozying up and watching some college football on a weeknight as the weather gets colder outside.  And there are some important games.  Ball State-NIU might very well be for the MAC West title.  Also, Kent State tries to take advantage of the MAC East being pathetic by winning to put some room between themselves and the rest of the division.

Thursday

US Canada
North Carolina at #21 Pittsburgh 7:30 PM

Only one game but it’s important in the ACC Coastal.  The division synonymous with chaos could become even more chaotic if the Tar Heels can pull off the slight upset of Pitt.

Friday

US Canada
#5 Cincinnati at USF 6:00 PM

Only one game that is being shown in Canada tonight and it starts at an odd time.  Why so early for this one?  The reason is that there is a huge World Cup Qualifying game with the United States facing Mexico.  That starts at 9:00 on ESPN2 which makes it so this game had to start no later than 6:00.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#6 Michigan at Penn State Noon
UConn at Clemson Noon
Rutgers at Indiana Noon
Bucknell at Army Noon
Mississippi State at #17 Auburn Noon
Northwestern at #18 Wisconsin Noon
UCF at SMU Noon
#8 Oklahoma at #13 Baylor Noon
Syracuse at Louisville Noon
New Mexico State at #2 Alabama Noon

I wouldn’t say there are any massive games in this timeslot but there are some interesting ones.  Michigan-PSU is an elimination game of sorts in the Big Ten East.  Baylor needs to win or we will most definitely have a Bedlam rematch in the Big XII Championship.  And of course, TSN picks up (for their only early game)…New Mexico State heading to Alabama?  For fuck’s sake, why?  This will probably be the most lopsided game of the weekend and that’s what they pick?  With a few other options open?  Plus it’s on the SEC Network!  I honestly don’t get it.  That makes no fucking sense whatsoever.  I guess I should feel kind of happy they didn’t simulcast the ABC game but there are three ESPN games they bypassed.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#19 Purdue at #4 Ohio State 3:30 PM
Duke at Virginia Tech 3:30 PM
Minnesota at #20 Iowa 3:30 PM
#1 Georgia at Tennessee 3:30 PM
UAB at Marshall 3:30 PM
Miami at Florida State 3:30 PM
Iowa State at Texas Tech 3:30 PM
Boston College at Georgia Tech 3:30 PM
Tulsa at Tulane 4:00 PM
Maryland at #7 Michigan State 4:00 PM
South Carolina at Missouri 4:00 PM

Just like the opening salvo of Saturday, no real huge games here but some interesting ones.  Purdue-tOSU is obviously a pretty big game knowing what the Boilermakers have done this season.  I don’t know if UGA will play down to the Vols’ level since they haven’t done that all season, except maybe against Clemson in their opening week win.  And somehow, Miami and Florida State still get a prime ESPN spot on the weekend.  You don’t see too many teams keep getting prime TV spots like The U does.  Florida State less so since they have been appearing on the ACC Network quite often the past few seasons.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Air Force at Colorado State 7:00 PM
#11 Texas A&M at #19 Ole Miss 7:00 PM
Kentucky at Vanderbilt 7:00 PM
#9 Notre Dame at Virginia 7:30 PM
#16 NC State at #12 Wake Forest 7:30 PM
Kansas at Texas 7:30 PM
#25 Arkansas at LSU 7:30 PM
TCU at #10 Oklahoma State 8:00 PM

Look, when ND-UVA is your ABC primetime game you know it’s not the greatest week on paper.  And you know what means, right?  We are in for some wackiness for sure and there are a couple of games in this timeslot where an upset would really cause some upheaval.  Oklahoma State has to beat TCU to continue their run to JerryWorld and Notre Dame can’t trip up against the Fighting Mendenhalls of Charlottesville.  Oh, and we all remember Kansas upsetting Texas a few seasons ago.  You never know.

I have noticed TSN really has started showing a lot less college football which is pissing off some fans and rightfully so.  I think the premise that people will pay for what they want just totally escapes Rogers, Bell, Eastlink, Cogeco, the CRTC and others in the broadcasting industry.  You want to lose cable subscribers?  Keep doing what you’re doing.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Nevada at #22 San Diego State 10:30 PM
Washington State at #3 Oregon 10:30 PM

Two late games, both fairly important.  Oregon needs to look a lot better against Wazzu or they could blow up this opportunity that’s been handed to them.  As for the other game, it probably decides the Mountain West West Division, no offense to Fresno State or San Jose State.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Oklahoma at Baylor (Noon, FOX) – Amazingly enough, it’s the Baylor Bears that still seem to register as arguably the biggest shock in a season full of shocking results.  Honestly, they are a couple of botches against TCU from being 8-1 and in the Top 10.  Saying that, the Bears probably do need to win this game as a loss here clinches a spot in the Big XII Championship for Oklahoma and may end up doing the same for Oklahoma State.  With this being in Waco, the hope for Baylor is that the Sooner defense, which has been shaky all season, crumbles under the pressure of a good Baylor offense.  Also, if Baylor wins this they have Kansas State and Texas Tech left where they would be favoured by quite a bit.  The Sooners, on the other hand, are at the start of a very difficult three-game stretch with this game followed by Iowa State and OSU.

NC State at Wake Forest (7:30, specialty pack) – Man, did the ACC Network ever luck out getting this one.  It really does show how little people feel about Wake Forest (and to a lesser extent, NC State).  This is arguably the biggest game of the season in the ACC Atlantic and it gets relegated to the ACC Network?  Completely ridiculous and something I would understand if we were still in October (or better yet, September).  The winner here is in the driver’s seat in the division and would only have to contend with Clemson if the Tigers win the following week against those same Demon Deacons.

Michigan at Penn State (Noon, ABC) – Honestly, this could have been the primetime ABC game and I’m kind of surprised it wasn’t despite the fact the Nittany Lions aren’t ranked.  Penn State still could cause a massive amount of issues in the Big Ten East with games here against the Wolverines and later on against Michigan State.  A Big Blue win here will set them possibly for a winner-take-all showdown against Ohio State two days after American Thanksgiving.

Purdue at Ohio State (3:30, ABC) – And of course the Wolverines and Nittany Lions will be scoreboard watching to see if Purdue can pull off yet another huge upset.  If the Boilermakers can pull it off, it blows the Big Ten wide open and gives quite a few teams a true chance at the crown.  In the East, that would bring Michigan, Michigan State and even Penn State back into the fray whereas in the West, all of a sudden Purdue might be the favourite to head to Indianapolis.  That would be interesting to see them play close to home for a chance at the Big Ten title.

Texas A&M at Ole Miss (7:00, specialty pack) – When the game where College Gameday is going to be ends up fifth on this list, isn’t it a good week?  Both of these teams have two losses in the SEC West.  It means they have to hope for at least one Alabama loss in their final two conference games for them to have any chance at the division title.  This game should be relatively evenly matched.  I’ll have to check but I am sure Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will be there so for their sake I hope they get a good game although they have been a lot luckier than, say, Brad Nessler or Gus Johnson in that regard this season.

Honourable mention: Georgia at Tennessee (3:30, CBS); Notre Dame at Virginia (7:30, ABC/TSN2); Nevada at San Diego State (10:30, CBS Sports Network)

Wanna bet?

I had some pretty damn fantastic picks last week.  I picked North Carolina over Wake Forest.  But I went against my gut with Michigan State and I paid for it.  Also, Washington was oh so close to upsetting Oregon although thanks to Jimmy Lake’s playcalling, they didn’t get the chance.  But that’s the past, let’s talk about now.  The picks for this week are below!

Georgia over Tennessee

Texas A&M over Ole Miss

Wake Forest over NC State

Nevada over San Diego State

Oklahoma over Baylor

Notre Dame over Virginia

Ohio State over Purdue

Penn State over Michigan (slight upset)

Tulane over Tulsa

Central Michigan over Kent State

Marshall over UAB

As per usual, I will be up past 2 in the morning watching games.  This is the time where I really up my game so to speak.  I know the end is a mere couple of months away so I want to get in as much viewing as I possibly can.  Personal issues have made things rough for me lately but the one thing it has done has opened the door for me to watch more college football.  That’s not a bad thing, right?  Anyway, enjoy the games this week everyone!

Most Important Games of the 2021 College Football Season – Part I (plus a blurb about the NFL Draft)

It’s been too damn long since I’ve written a post directed solely to college football.  Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd….this won’t be one either.  I did not do a full NFL draft review post because, honestly, I didn’t feel like it.  There are enough reviews of the draft so I can put a paragraph or two at the end of this post and that should suffice.  I will say it was nice to watch that.  And then to watch some actual college football?  An absolute delight.  The FCS, as a whole, has got a lot of publicity with this Spring season.  To play games on ESPN and even ABC is huge for some of those teams.  Don’t be surprised when realignment talk starts again (and oh it will), that some of these teams that got big national audiences in April and May surface as possible FBS teams.

Anyway, now to the task at hand: the upcoming 2021 college football schedules.  At least this year I am almost 100% positive that games won’t be cancelled except for reasons that aren’t COVID-related but those rarely happen.  I’m doing this a tiny bit later than I normally do so if for some reason you were waiting for these posts, I apologize.  As the saying goes, life sometimes gets in the way.  I will say the same thing I have said every year I have done this.  Very few of the games are confirmed.  I will try and note if they are in these important game posts.  A lot more should be set by the time I get to network-specific schedule posts but even then, it’s really a crapshoot once October comes around.

Saying that, there are a few probables.  Like let’s be honest here: the Iron Bowl will be on CBS.  The only way this doesn’t happen is if both teams are somehow under .500.  I’d bet everything I have (which isn’t much) on that not being the case.  So you can be rest assured some things will be the same as they’ve always been.

For the fourth year in a row, the Important Games list will be broken down week-by-week and then as per the following:

  • Game of the Week – This is my opinion of the game of the week.  It may differ from your opinion.  That is OK.  Because the next part is…
  • Other Really Important Games – See?  One of these games might be your game of the week choice.
  • Sneaky-Good Underrated Game – Some games are underrated.  I will try to find one each week that could fulfill that criterion.
  • Best Group of Five Game – Pretty self-explanatory but has to have TWO G5 teams involved.
  • Worst Power Five Game – Just like above, except the opposite (with two P5 teams involved).

The “Other Really Important Games” section is the one section where the number of games I include may vary.  In some weeks you will only see one or two.  Others there may be like seven.  We pretty much know which weeks will have better games and which ones won’t so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise.

SOUND THE TRUMPETS!  Hear ye, hear ye!  It’s time for the commencement of the Bossman’s Blog college football blog posting season: the ranking of the weeks.  If you were looking for something similar to every other year then ho boy are you in for a shock…again.  For all that stays the same with college football, these weekly rankings have been changing a fair bit lately.  Just a reminder that I list the week and the date that corresponds to the Saturday of that week so you can follow along at home:

  1. Week 10 (November 6)
  2. Week 13 (November 27 – American Thanksgiving)
  3. Week 5 (October 2)
  4. Week 9 (October 30)
  5. Week 1 (September 4)
  6. Week 7 (October 16)
  7. Week 12 (November 20)
  8. Week 11 (November 13)
  9. Week 8 (October 23)
  10. Week 6 (October 9)
  11. Week 3 (September 18)
  12. Week 4 (September 25)
  13. Week 2 (September 11)

First off, same as last year there are thirteen weeks to the regular season.  Do I like this?  I have not changed my stance from last year that no I do not like this.  Honestly I would prefer 14 if not 15 weeks in a season.  I understand there are issues there when it comes to the schools and players’ courses but for the health and safety of the players, this is a no-brainer.  Which means the NCAA will take another decade to figure this out.  For the first time since they did that Sunday night Notre Dame-Texas thriller years ago, Week 1 is really good.  Top 5 even!  There are some great games to start the season and that is what college football needs this season: a strong start.  American Thanksgiving moves up to second but still hasn’t regained its crown.  Weeks 10 looks ridiculously good.  Honestly, all of November is great, even the former SEC Sleepwalk Saturday which I really can’t call it that anymore because it’s a good week now.  October is a big drop from last year as it feels like we are really easing into the end of the season and then building to the November crescendo, if you will.  Then there’s September.  Ouch.  After Week 1 it’s a bit of a shitshow.  As per usual, there are a couple of potential games of the year in there with a lot of crap surrounding it.  Meaning at least one of those weeks will end up being the most exciting week of the year.  Why?  It’s what the college football universe has decided.  I don’t make the rules.

Now it’s time for the weekly breakdowns.  Many of the TSN times will be wrong but hey, it’s May.  If the game time has been confirmed it will be in bold.  Let’s GO!

Week 1

Game of the Week: Georgia vs. Clemson (in Charlotte) (7:30, ABC) – Wow this is quite the game of the week to start the season.  College football is seriously not fucking around.  I mean don’t get me wrong, it’s a neutral-site game which I am not the fondest of but I understand the reasoning behind them (spoiler: it’s money).  You can honestly say this game is a Game of the Year candidate right off the hop.  Let’s also be honest here: when the College Football Playoff expands to 8 teams, you could make the argument that this game isn’t nearly as big since a loss doesn’t even close to eliminate either of these teams from contention.  It will be interesting to see who gets the bigger start on the road to topple Bama from their throne.  Clemson is the favourite here but there will be a lot of questions after losing Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne in the NFL Draft.  Both teams are at least New Year’s Six or bust but the winner takes a step up in their bid for the College Football Playoff which is still four teams.

Other Really Important Games: Alabama vs. Miami (in Atlanta) (3:30, ABC) – Maybe the ACC and SEC should do an opening week ACC-SEC Challenge from now on.  Who the hell says no to this?  I mean yes it means that you will get a Duke-Vanderbilt game possibly somewhere but if you don’t want to head to the ACC or SEC Network then don’t.  No one is forcing you to.  But with the annual Labour Day game that seems to always end up being the SEC and ACC to opening up the day before Labour Day for college football and neutral-site games all over the place, this might be a good idea.  I’m sure there’s a party pooper out there that would say it’s a dumb idea but that might also be the same person who thinks scheduling games two decades out makes sense.  Anyway, Bama will probably win by three touchdowns.  NEXT!

Penn State at Wisconsin (4:00, FOX) – At least FOX has realized that opening weekend is a good weekend to at least try and get a good slate of games on.  Now if they can just realize that for the rest of the weeks during the regular season that only getting one good game to show with two mediocre ones after is not the greatest approach to grow a fanbase.  It looks like the Big Ten will be a huge part of FOX’s opening week which is no surprise since the B1G is to FOX like the SEC is to CBS (almost).  Both of these teams looking to rebound from bad years (at least for each of these programs).  The Big Ten West is always wide open so the Badgers have as good a chance as any team not named Illinois.  The Nittany Lions will be looking up once again at Ohio State so every game is huge and these are the games they have to win to have a shot at a division title.  I wish they would just do away with division titles but let’s not start that talk again.  Speaking of the Buckeyes…

Ohio State at Minnesota (Thursday, 8:00, FOX) – Will this be close?  Probably not but it’s an early Big Ten game on a night that Ohio State is not used to playing.  And now with no Justin Fields, we shall see if it’s steady as she goes for Ryan Day or a bit of stress and a higher blood pressure for Ryan Day.  See what I mean about FOX really stepping up this opening weekend?  This is the first Thursday night FOX college football regular season game ever if I’m not mistaken.

Indiana at Iowa (Noon, FOX) – The third straight FOX game and the third straight Big Ten game.  The Big Ten may have a good idea here with putting a few big conference games during Week One when pretty much no other conference is doing so.  I guess that’s the advantage of having nine conference games instead of eight.  Both of these teams have to be considered dark-horse contenders this season.  No one will put them in their College Football Playoff predictions.  Hell, I’m sure most won’t put either team in their New Year’s Six predictions.  I haven’t done my predictions yet but I have a feeling that will be the case with me.  And that’s fine since I wouldn’t mind either of these teams surprising a lot of people and being in contention late into November.

LSU at UCLA (8:00, FOX) – Four of the most important games of the week are on FOX (from what I believe).  That’s FOX’s entire weekend schedule.  Seriously impressive.  And something ABC does rarely and ESPN does never.  Here’s to hoping LSU is at least not worse than last year’s team (which they have the reasons why so I can give them that) and that UCLA is better than what they’ve been the past few years.  Many believe both those things will be true so we could be in for a great end to at least the Saturday portion of the 5-day Labour Day College Football Fiesta.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Ole Miss at Louisville (Monday, 8:00, TSN1/TSN4/TSN5) – Maybe some will consider this not so underrated.  Louisville was much better under Scott Satterfield this past season and, well, Lane Kiffin is Lane Kiffin.  But until either or both of these teams shows some serious Top 25 consistency, I can’t buy that we would be looking at one of the best games of the week.  Both teams have almost no chance to win their conference considering the teams on top but they could certainly put a scare in those same top teams if they are better than advertised.  We may look back at this game and realize this was, in actuality, a huge game in the battle for a New Year’s Six spot.

Best Group of Five Game: Boise State at UCF (Thursday, 7:30, TSN2) – Interesting that I have the chance to watch games on all sorts of different networks now and the best games of Week One will all be available quite easily in Canada.  C’est la vie.  Boise State has a very interesting part of the Mountain West’s new television deals (which started last year but really do come into play starting this season).  FOX gets ALL of Boise State’s home games on the season so there’s a good chance at least one time that the Broncos will get to the main network which would be huge for the conference.  CBS gets all of Boise State’s conference road games.  I don’t know if any of those will be shown late night on CBS (which is the plan at least once this season) but if I were them I would try and do so.  As for the other couple games that Boise State has, they can be shown anywhere.  Like this one, which will probably be on ESPN.  Bizarre?  Not really for a team that should have been picked up by the Big XII by now and is somewhat stuck in a Group of Five conference.  A good Group of Five conference but a G-5 conference nonetheless.

Worst Power Five Game: Oregon State at Purdue (3:30, Big Ten Network) – I had to go through a lot of games to find this one.  The next worst game?  Stanford and Kansas State in Arlington.  And this isn’t a part of Week One having a much better schedule than normal.  Week One is not really known for too many P5 vs. P5 games so it’s slim pickings trying to find a really bad one.  We will really see if either of these teams are worse than what they were last year: probably near the bottom of their conferences but honestly not that bad and a couple of breaks away from a bowl game.

Week 2

Game of the Week: Oregon at Ohio State (Noon, FOX) – Hey, how about that?  Same two teams occupy the Game of the Week spot for Week 2 and have to be considered a Game of the Year candidate.  I will not refer to the Oregon Ducks as the defending Pac-12 North champions.  They didn’t fucking win the division.  They only went to the Pac-12 Championship because Washington couldn’t due to COVID.  See this would have been a great year for USC to have been Top 5 and looking at a College Football Playoff spot and it’s ruined by a 4-3 team.  Considering what some people want, Oregon would have to also be put in the CFP.  How stupid is that?  It’s really fucking stupid.

Other Really Important Games: Washington at Michigan (7:30, ABC/TSN2) – Not fully confirmed for TSN2 but it will be on at least one TSN channel.  This could be a lot better than the two teams have been as of late.  Washington hasn’t hit the heights from early on in the Chris Petersen era.  And, Michigan is Michigan under Jim Harbaugh.  Usually good for at least 8 wins and a loss to Ohio State.  Big Blue can’t be as bad as they were last year can they?  No one thinks that but you never know.  This shows how bad Week 2 is since this may not even be an important game in the New Year’s Six story of the season.

Iowa at Iowa State (3:30, FOX) – Iowa State should be back in the Big XII title mix this season.  And Iowa has one of the longest tenured head coaches, Kirk Ferentz, who is good for at least one Ferentzing every season.  It’s why he gets these crazy contracts and great bonuses for a team that is almost never a Top 10 team.  Saying that, I would love to see one of these two teams on the precipice of the CFP because it needs some new blood, especially from non-blue blood programs.

Texas at Arkansas (7:00, specialty pack) – The first appearance of the specialty pack in this year’s important games series.  Not quite the Game of the Century of 1969…ok not even close to that.  But Arkansas is somehow trending in the right direction with one of the more popular coaches in college football nowadays and we get to see what Steve Sarkisian is really all about.  I sincerely hope he does well and doesn’t fall off the wagon again.  Now that doesn’t mean I want Texas to win the national championship.  I just mean I want Sark to have a good time in Austin and for people in Austin to give him a chance.  OK, I’m now officially worried for his well-being.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Missouri at Kentucky (7:30, specialty pack) – This will be buried in the schedule but could end up being a gem for the SEC Network.  We have two teams that really are on the rise (and in the Cats’ case, again).  It’s never the case that the SEC East is wide open but you need to win games like this to have a shot at the division title.  Kentucky knows that from a few years back when they still had a shot in November to clinch a spot in the SEC Championship.  I kind of wish this somehow gets to ESPN or ESPN2 but I doubt it.  And no, it won’t go to CBS, I’m almost certain of it.

Best Group of Five Game: Liberty at Troy (2:00, ESPN+) – Yes…ESPN+.  It was either this or UTEP-Boise State which I have going to FOX Sports One which, yes, is a better network.  But the Broncos should win that one by about 50 whereas this game should be fairly competitive.  It will be very interesting to see if the Flames are as good as they were last season.  It was funny watching the begrudging respect from so-called open minded college football media members last year so I hope they do well again this season.  Maybe, Conference USA finally gets their act together and invites them (unless the Sun Belt or even, dare I say, the American gets to them first).

Worst Power Five Game: Rutgers at Syracuse (Noon, ACC Network) – Funny I had these same two teams in this exact same spot last season before shit went sideways.  At least this season it would go to the proper network, unlike last year where the rumour was it would be on FOX because FOX just doesn’t care about their primetime window nearly as much as they should.  Again, I had other options here.  The one that stood out most was Illinois-Virginia but I think that might end up being good.  Just the Bronco Mendenhall-Bret Bielema coaching matchup is intriguing in itself.  RU-SU has none of that intrigue.  Zero.

Week 3

Game of the Week: Alabama at Florida (3:30, CBS) – This will have serious national championship implications but I don’t need to tell you that.  Now could this end up as a primetime game for CBS?  Possibly and it wouldn’t surprise me if they do it just for the fact that it would then be on at night and not in the afternoon where the players (and fans) would bake in the Gainesville sun.  This is a rematch of the SEC Championship where the Gators honestly looked like they could beat the Tide which is surprising considering how good Bama was last year.  It was the only time where the Tide looked like they were in trouble.  I wouldn’t even mind seeing a Bama loss here as it would make the SEC season, if not the entire college football season, a lot more interesting.

Other Really Important Games: Auburn at Penn State (7:30, ABC) – OK we’re still doing good with the high-profile games.  A definite step down from the Game of the Week but still a great game.  It was also really the only choice for ABC in primetime, especially since Boise State can’t be on the network for any of their home games and I can’t see them putting Cincinnati-Indiana on in that spot (although that would be a great idea in my opinion).  Two teams who have definitely taken a step, or two, back from previous seasons.  This should be a highly heated matchup as a loss could be devastating and portend not-so-good things to come on their season.

Nebraska at Oklahoma (Noon, FOX) – The story of this game was almost too good to be true.  Nebraska was trying desperately to get out of this game.  Social media found out and, predictably, took a huge creamy dump all over the Huskers organization.  In the end, they relented and kept this game on the schedule.  This is Scott Frost’s biggest chance since coming to Lincoln to put a huge stamp on the program and show that they are turning the corner.  A win here, as unlikely as it seems, would be the jolt the program needs to get back to prominence.  Now watch the Sooners win by 60.

Cincinnati at Indiana (4:00, FOX) – I would say FOX is kicking ABC/ESPN’s ass early on.  I mean they are but when it’s a week like this it doesn’t exactly mean a whole lot.  It’s a pretty good drop from the second best game of the week which was already a drop from the Game of the Week.  Much like last year’s Week 3 (or what it was supposed to be) this week is such a shit sandwich.  Meaning there is a very good opportunity for it to be an exciting and crazy week of college football, something that happens at least once a season.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Oklahoma State at Boise State (3:30, FOX Sports One) – Could this end up on the main FOX network?  If they take all of their broadcast windows seriously, then yes.  Which is why I have this game on FS1.  At least it’s not like last season when the Broncos were slated to host Florida State on FOX at Noon Eastern, 10:00 in the morning local.  Not saying they won’t have to do that in the future to get that big national audience but it’s a tough introduction to Big Noon Saturday (if it had ended up happening).  Hey, maybe this game will end up at Noon.  May be a better option than Nebraska-Oklahoma even if it’s just to promote the Mountain West.

Best Group of Five Game: Coastal Carolina at Buffalo (3:30, ESPN+) – Look I’m going to be honest again here.  I go through the season, setting up these schedules based on what I believe will happen by using current TV contract info and what has happened over the past year or two.  This does not mean that all the “choices” I make are good ones or ones that I agree with.  I may change my mind even before I start doing these posts.  This feels like a game, if it were in October, would easily be on ESPNU if not ESPN2.  So between now and the network-specific posts, I may change my mind.  This will be the first test to see if the Chants are as good as advertised and potentially a Group of Five favourite for the NY6 spot.

Worst Power Five Game: Baylor at Kansas (Thursday, 8:00, specialty pack) – This is more for Kansas than it is for Baylor.  Not saying the Bears are great because it was a struggle last year in Dave Aranda’s first season in Waco.  But until the Jayhawks show they can contend for a bowl game on a consistent basis, they will be treated like the Big XII’s ugly redheaded stepchild.  The hope is that the hire of Lance Leipold to coach the team will be a good one.  It should be but we won’t see any of that good stuff this season.  They should feel lucky that they get to be on ESPN, even if it is on a Thursday night up against the NFL.

There you go.  The first three weeks are complete.  And it’s the first official blog post for what should be a much more normal college football season.  96 days to the start of a regular regular season.  With fans in the stands.  Maybe not full stadiums but man, hearing fans is so much better than the empty arenas.

Now, let’s have that quick talk about the draft.  It was nice to see fans there in Cleveland despite the chilly weather.  It was nice to see Roger Goodell there even though him in his barcalounger was pretty damn funny.  I wonder how many fans just farted their brains out on that chair on stage.  I followed along with my mock draft and saw it was crap after the first few picks, as per usual.  I got a couple right later on but was way off on some.  It is what it is.  I won’t do a recap.  There are too many out there and I might be repeating what they say.  The Jags got Lawrence.  The Jets got Wilson.  The 49ers reached for Lance (in my opinion) but it was a better choice than Mac Jones who ended up a Patriot.  The Bears may have made the smartest move in the draft.  Yes the same Bears who traded up to get Mitchell Trubisky traded up this time to get Justin Fields in a trade that most everyone thought was brilliant.  The team I cheer for, the Buffalo Bills, did alright.  Not great but then again, they didn’t have serious needs.  They just needed to shore up some areas.  All in all, it was a good watch and I enjoyed it, even watching Mel Kiper try valiantly to keep his blood pressure from going through the roof with some of the picks.

Alright this felt good.  It’s a bit cathartic to do this post.  I’ve been through a pretty crazy last 15 months and now that my life (and hopefully, soon, life in this province) is getting back to normal, this is one of the final parts that need to return, so to speak.  Make my life as whole as it was before my life turned upside-down (not that it’s an amazing life but it wasn’t bad at the time).  Anyway, have a great Victoria Day, whatever you decide to do and have a great (and short!) work week as well…unless you don’t work Monday to Friday.  In that case, still have a good week even if you aren’t working all those days.

Is this the end for Captain Khaki? – Week 12 College Football Recap

You all saw it.  Rutgers took Michigan to three overtimes before falling to the Wolverines thanks to terrible playcalling.  Yeah it wasn’t great for Michigan.  And definitely not great for Jim Harbaugh.  And of course Twitter, being full of very level-headed people, went crazy.  I stayed out of the Harbaugh talk at the time but I have finally decided to break the silence.  I know it would take a lot of money to fire Harbaugh.  He is only under contract through the end of next season.  The way this season has gone, it is clear Jimmy Beige Pants ain’t the answer.  But here’s the issue: so what do you do then?  If you do fire him (and pay out an enormous buyout fee which, in a pandemic, might not be a thing athletic directors want to do), who do you bring in to replace him?  Despite the fact most people might disagree, the Michigan head coaching spot is one of the Top 10 head coaching gigs in the nation.  That has not changed since the days of Bo Schembechler.  Pat Fitzgerald is a name that comes up but he has already declined the NFL so I assume he would decline to coach in Ann Arbor as well.  Is there another Power Five coach who could be poached?  Or will the fanbase accept an up-and-coming Group of Five head coach like Luke Fickell or Bryan Harsin?  No matter what happens, it is going to be a complete shitshow.  Which, I will admit, is entertaining.  For me, not for fans of Big Blue.

Now on to the rest of the recap.

Recap

  • Oklahoma throttled Oklahoma State in Bedlam.  The Sooners piled on 21 points in the first quarter and never looked back.  It still amazes me that people say anything can happen in Bedlam.  No, it can’t.  Oklahoma has won over 80% of the games in this rivalry.  This is the epitome of big brother beating up little brother (sorry Michigan and Michigan State fans).  This now makes it so Oklahoma controls their own destiny to get to the Big XII Championship.  Still probably no shot at the College Football Playoff, though.  And I feel bad for Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit.  Those two can’t catch a break.  They rarely have good games to announce.  Even when they don’t do the ABC primetime game they end up calling a shitty game.  A lot like Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson over at CBS.
  • Tulsa beat Tulane in an absolutely insane Thursday nighter.  The game was tied at 0 with 6 minutes to go in the third.  Then both teams went crazy and scored a bunch of points, with the Golden Hurricane racking up 21 in the final 10 minutes of regulation.  This was capped off by a 37-yard touchdown pass with no time left.  Then in double overtime, Tulsa ends it on a walk-off pick six by Zaven Collins.  Tulsa has comeback to beat UCF, East Carolina, SMU and now Tulane to be an improbably 5-1 and it looks like they may be heading to the AAC Championship game as long as they take care of business this coming week in Houston.
  • For most of the Mississippi State-Georgia game, a game I thought wouldn’t be close, it was seriously looking like a huge upset for the Bulldogs.  UGA just couldn’t put them away.  I mean Georgia pulled it out with a late touchdown.  But man, they were playing a home game, in front of actual fans, and barely beat one of the worst teams in the SEC.  I think it may be high time for Kirby Smart to take a step back and look what he has done with the program.  Start with the mostly terrible decision to start Stetson Bennett over JT Daniels.  I believe Daniels was injured earlier in the year but once he was ready to go, they should have given him the ball to see what he could do.  Not doing so, is a failure of the coaches, namely Smart.
  • Oregon beat UCLA (barely) and USC did the same to Utah.  So those two teams continue their march to the Pac-12 Championship.  And all for the opportunity to possibly still be the #5 seed and be on the outside of the CFP looking in.  This is what the Pac-12 gets for himming and hawing over starting the season.  They should have just opted out completely but we all know now that money brought them back.  Hell, look at the way they are doing things.  No Pac-12 Network.  And now non-conference games can be scheduled but must be hosted by the Pac-12 team.  Everyone’s got a price (just like Ted DiBiase’s theme told us).
  • Man, Kansas State got absolutely BOATRACED by Iowa State.  I figured the Cyclones would win but they utterly destroyed the Wildcats in that shutout win.  What their win has done was put them in the driver’s seat for the Big XII Championship.  At this point, if Oklahoma or Texas lose another game, the Clones are in no matter what they do.  But I am sure Matt Campbell would prefer to go in the front door to JerryWorld.
  • What can you say about the Big Ten officiating crews other than they are awful?  Purdue got jobbed Friday night against Minnesota on a phantom offensive pass interference call that negated a late touchdown.  It probably would have given the Boilermakers a huge win and move them to 3-1 (and possibly into the Top 25).  Instead, the Flying Flecks survive.  I don’t understand how officials aren’t suspended for a game without pay for game-altering calls like that.  Not saying refs should get shit for every bad call but ones of that nature, absolutely.
  • Cincinnati beat UCF in a very close one.  For a while it looked like the Knights had the Bearcats number.  Two fourth quarter touchdowns made the difference for Cincy.  It also keeps Cincinnati in the catbird seat for the Group of Five.  Win out and they will be, at least, in the New Year’s Six.
  • Alabama beat Kentucky and are still undefeated.  If it hadn’t been aired on a TSN network as well as the SEC Network, I don’t think I would have watched a single minute of it.
  • Indiana gave Ohio State quite the scare.  It would feel like tOSU would be pulling away and then Indiana came back to make it close.  Make no mistake about it: these Hoosiers are for real.  But they aren’t quite College Football Playoff material.  Yet.  The Buckeyes kept their CFP hopes alive with the slim win and might end up murdering Michigan by about 60 points this coming weekend.
  • Coastal Carolina beat Appalachian State to lay claim as the best Sun Belt team this season.  They became the first 8-0 team in Sun Belt history (which shocks me to be honest).  Will they make the College Football Playoff?  Absolutely not but they may still have a path to the New Year’s Six.  Keep winning and they may ascend high enough to warrant inclusion.  Again, this makes it tough on the College Football Playoff Committee which always loved by me.
  • Penn State got destroyed by Iowa and now is sitting at 0-5 and last place in the Big Ten East.  This is the worst start in Nittany Lion history and puts James Franklin in a very bad spot.  It would not surprise me to see that PSU fires Franklin in the off-season due to this season and some off-field incidents that are painting him in a bad light.
  • Northwestern put themselves in the catbird seat in the Big Ten West with their huge win over Wisconsin in a defensive slugfest.  Pat Fitzgerald also made mention of the Wildcats being a bunch of “Fighting Rece Davises.”  That is from a comment by Joey Galloway earlier in the week where he said Northwestern was a bunch of Rece Davises on the field.  A slap in the face to Northwestern for sure.  Well they made sure to throw it back in Galloway’s face with that win.  And they still have a shot at the College Football Playoff if things go their way.
  • Finally, to the delight of a lot of people, Liberty lost their first game of the season.  In a low-scoring affair, NC State blocked a Flames field goal attempt late in the fourth quarter to lock up the win.  Could this be Hugh Freeze’s final big game at Liberty before moving on?  It sure seems that way as he has done a masterful job in Lynchburg.  Liberty is a certified FBS team and has to be considered a tough out going forward.  It might not be that way if Freeze leaves but he has certainly laid a good foundation for his successor.

We are now getting into the real important part of the season.  Three more weeks of the regular season (kind of) means every week is super important.  Anyway, here’s my Top 25 that, again, had some good movement:

#1 Alabama
#2 Ohio State
#3 Florida
#4 Notre Dame
#5 Cincinnati
#6 BYU
#7 Clemson
#8 Texas A&M
#9 Oregon
#10 Miami
#11 Oklahoma
#12 Georgia
#13 Northwestern
#14 Coastal Carolina
#15 Indiana
#16 Marshall
#17 USC
#18 Iowa State
#19 Auburn
#20 Wisconsin
#21 Texas
#22 Oklahoma State
#23 Louisiana
#24 Washington
#25 North Carolina

I get it.  You may not be happy with Ohio State at #2.  But they just beat Indiana so I think they belong there.  Saying that, Notre Dame could usurp them in upcoming weeks thanks to Michigan being trash.  So no need to worry my friends.  Cincinnati and BYU are sitting in the weeds at #5 and #6 with the hope that something happens to at least one of the four teams above them.  Indiana and Wisconsin, despite both losing, didn’t fall too far and still have (very) slim hopes and at least are in the NY6 race.  Oh, and Coastal Carolina, as I mentioned above, are at the #14 spot and has a legitimate shot at the NY6 as long as they keep winning.

Alright, Monday Night Football tonight in a game that many people will probably actually watch.  The Rams and Buccaneers in a huge NFC matchup.  If the Rams win, then they move into a tie with Seattle at the top of the NFC West.  A Bucs win puts them in a great spot, just half-a-game behind New Orleans and easily at the top of the Wild Card race.

So we usually would be heading into a MACtion night but that is not to be this week.  We have no college football games the next two nights.  No football at all.  Yes that’s sad.  But then we get Footballgasm weekend which is not as much of a huge thing this season.  Thanks, 2020.

Tomorrow we got some bowl projections (which aren’t early anymore).  Wednesday there will be the college football week that isn’t so shitty anymore and its TV schedule.  Finally, the NFL gets the sked treatment on Thursday.  Enjoy your week (and the games) everyone!

I guess now we begin – Week 8 College Football TV Schedule

The Big Ten and Mountain West start playing football this weekend.  There is already a cancellation as New Mexico and Colorado State will not play this weekend.  Other than though it is full steam ahead as almost every team is in play now.  It’s two weeks until the Pac-12 and MAC finally commence but who knows if they will have a legitimate shot at the College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six, respectively.  My best guess right now is no but this has been a wonky season so far so who the hell knows.  I am sure ESPN will go all-out to promote the Big Ten’s return.  FOX as well since they have some pretty huge games in the B1G the rest of the season.  It will get nauseating pretty quickly, I’m sure.

Anywho, I got nothing else so let’s get to the sked shall we?

Thursday

US Canada
Arkansas State at Appalachian State 7:30 PM

One game.  But it could be considered a pretty big Sun Belt game.  Most people are probably going to watch the Thursday Night Football matchup since the World Series will be on a break.  Let’s look at this one this way though: whichever team loses will give their respective division leaders another leg up.  A Red Wolves loss helps Louisiana and a Mountaineers loss will assist Coastal Carolina in their shocking 2020 campaign.

Friday

US Canada
Tulsa at USF 7:30 PM
Illinois at #14 Wisconsin 8:00 PM
Louisiana at UAB 8:00 PM

CBS Sports Network probably has the biggest game of the night.  I know the Big Ten is starting this night but the winner of ULL-UAB probably moves into the Top 25 and may still have an outside shot at a NY6 spot.  Funny enough, ESPN has the worst game of the night.  Doesn’t happen often.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Oklahoma at TCU Noon
Syracuse at #1 Clemson Noon
Rutgers at Michigan State Noon
Mercer at Army Noon
#23 NC State at #14 North Carolina Noon
Nebraska at #5 Ohio State Noon
Auburn at Ole Miss Noon
Tulane at UCF 2:00 PM

It’s an alright start to the day I guess.  Not as great as last week but still good.  Problem is it’s a few cases of a good, ranked team playing a not-so-good unranked team.  Also, if you are a masochist, you can immerse yourself in Rutgers Scarlet Knights football.

And yes, that is not a typo.  ESPN2 has a game on at 2 in the afternoon.  Why is this happening?  Because UFC 254’s preliminary matches are on ESPN2 starting at Noon.  Yes, Noon.  Because they are in Dubai and they finally decided to stop making the fighters fight locally in the morning, which is completely stupid.  So yeah, the PPV itself starts at 2:00 so that’s when ESPN2 gets to start airing college football.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#3 Notre Dame at Pittsburgh 3:30 PM
Iowa at Purdue 3:30 PM
#2 Alabama at Tennessee 3:30 PM
Houston at Navy 3:30 PM
Baylor at Texas 3:30 PM
#17 Iowa State at #6 Oklahoma State 3:30 PM
#8 Penn State at Indiana 3:30 PM
West Virginia at Texas Tech 5:30 PM

Some pretty good games here.  OK more like one great game and a bunch of good ones.  ISU-OSU could end up being massive in the Big XII scheme of things (and pretty much put the nail in the coffin for the conference if the Cowboys lose).  Notre Dame has a bit of a landmine game as they head to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers.  Oh and Penn State is in tough to start their season as they face the Hoosiers.  And you can see that TSN2 is going with an all-ESPN quadrupleheader this weekend.  Smart on their part.  It always makes me wonder why they don’t do that every weekend they can.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Wyoming at Nevada 7:00 PM
South Carolina at LSU 7:00 PM
#18 Michigan at #21 Minnesota 7:30 PM
Maryland at Northwestern 7:30 PM

Again, I am not showing any possible specialty pack games since I haven’t seen anything to the contrary.  It’s sad since at this point of the season they would be clocking in with about 12-18 games every week.  That’s a lot of games that now we won’t be able to see with a normal cable subscription.  Anyway, the Michigan-Minnesota game is huge and could make my predictions about Michigan look terrible if the Wolverines pull off the win.  It’s a small amount of games for this timeslot though which is odd as we are not quite into a full college football schedule yet.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
#9 Cincinnati at #16 SMU 9:00 PM
Texas State at #12 BYU 10:15 PM
UNLV at San Diego State 10:30 PM

The back third of the weird 2/5:30/9 ESPN2 tripleheader has one of the biggest games of the day with Cincinnati and SMU possibly battling for one of the spots in the AAC Championship.  We finally see some Mountain West games which feels so right.  And BYU looks to continue to run the table as they should beat TSU but they need to win big to keep themselves in the minds of The Committee.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Iowa State at Oklahoma State (3:30, FOX) – Another team that no one thought would be in the Top 10 (and probably shouldn’t be).  People just love Mike “The Mullet” Gundy.  And he finally has the team, shockingly enough, that will make a great run at a potential Big XII Championship.  Chuba Hubbard really hasn’t even begun his Heisman campaign yet.  They haven’t had the crazy offense yet that everyone thinks they will see.  Gundy has done a great job with this team.  As for ISU, Matt Campbell has also done a great job and don’t be surprised if these two teams meet yet again in the least-watched Big XII Championship ever at JerryWorld.

Cincinnati at SMU (9:00, ESPN2) – Did anyone think the freakin’ SMU Mustangs would be undefeated at this point, AGAIN?  Honestly I am surprised it didn’t somehow get an ABC timeslot because I know Disney likes to put the huge American conference games on there.  But the Big Ten’s return was going to overshadow everything but I, Bossman, am not falling for that!  Cincinnati is ranked #9 for God’s sake and SMU is #16 and this, as of right now, is the first New Year’s Six elimination game (barring future chaos).  Too bad it’s not being shown in Canada.

Michigan at Minnesota (7:30, ABC) – Big Blue vs. Row The Boat.  This is the Wolverines’ chance to start yet another year as a College Football Playoff contender.  But we know that playing Minnesota, at night, in the cold, in front of the rabid Gopher fans is quickly becoming one of the toughest playing atmospheres in college football.  This will feel great just because it truly signifies the Big Ten’s return to playing football.

NC State at North Carolina (Noon, TSN2) – Who thought the Wolfpack would be in the Top 25 at any point this season? Now put down your hands, you dirty liars.  Could Dave Doeren finally break through with the amazing campaign that fans in Raleigh have been waiting for since he was hired?  As for North Carolina, who knows how they are feeling after last week’s upset loss to Florida State.  Mack Brown should have these guys ready as this is the biggest battle in the state in recent memory.

Penn State at Indiana (3:30, FOX Sports One) – Huge game for FOX Sports One since FOX just had to grab Nebraska-tOSU for Big Nude Saturday.  Anyway, the loser here is probably already out of the Big Ten East race.  I know it’s the first game for both teams this season and it sounds harsh but it is what it is.  Don’t be surprised if the Hoosiers can pull off the upset.

Honourable mention: Georgia Southern at Coastal Carolina (Noon, ESPNU); Louisiana at UAB (Friday, 8:00, CBS Sports Network);  Florida Atlantic at Marshall (2:30, Stadium)

Some gambling fun and games

I have no shame in saying I was wrong in some of my picks last week.  Honestly, I never have shame for that.  Here’s this week picks:

North Carolina over NC State

Louisiana over UAB

SMU over Cincinnati (mild upset)

Marshall over Florida Atlantic

Oklahoma State over Iowa State

Georgia Southern over Coastal Carolina (another mild upset)

Minnesota over Michigan (mild upset?)

Penn State over Indiana

San Diego State over UNLV

Northwestern over Maryland

Navy over Houston

Sorry for it being late this week.  What a day this has been for me.  Let’s just say I was busier than I thought I would be.

Tonight’s Thursday Night Football is a shitshow game.  It’s the Eagles hosting the Giants.  Winner will have two wins on the season and be only a half-game behind the Dallas Cowboys.  God the NFC East is a fucking joke this season.

So we shall see how my viewing goes this weekend.  Should be pretty open for me to be on Twitter and be a general jackass.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Get ready for a lot of this Part II – Week 8 College Football TV Schedule

So last year at this time, it was the Nick Bosa issue.  Bosa decided to sit out the rest of the year to avoid injury and work on getting ready for the NFL Combine.  Now we have players redshirting, probably on the advice of their head coach, because the team isn’t going anywhere this season.  Next year will be better so why have your betters have their eligibility run out?  Again, am I surprised?  Like last year, no, I am not.  Teams are going to find ways to skirt the rules for lack of a better term.  They are using the redshirt rules (up to four games and then you can redshirt and not lose a year of eligibility) to their advantage.  I don’t blame these players/coaches/programs for doing this.  In my opinion they are being smart about this.

We are going to see more of this, guaranteed.  Why not?  Let’s be honest: none of this is even remotely associated with these players’ education.  It’s all about money.  And for coaches it’s all about holding on to their jobs longer.  If they can say that they are doing this so they need at least another year to truly have a chance to make it big with this program, they will get more money from their contract (although some of the buyout clauses are absurd).  College football: so pure and innocent, right?

Anywho, let’s get to the sked shall we?

Wednesday

US Canada
South Alabama at Troy 8:00 PM

Hey some TSN Fun Belt action!  Not a huge game but it really is the only thing on at night in terms of football.  This probably marks the TSN move to more college football that happens every year some time in October.

Thursday

US Canada
Louisiana at Arkansas State 7:30 PM
UCLA at Stanford 9:00 PM

Two games.  A Sun Belt game and a Pac-12 game.  Most people are probably going to watch the Thursday Night Football matchup or the ALCS thanks to the postponement of Game Four.  A UCLA-Stanford matchup doesn’t have the same zing it may have had a month or so ago since both teams have disappointed.

Friday

US Canada
Marshall at Florida Atlantic 6:30 PM
Pittsburgh at Syracuse 7:00 PM
#4 Ohio State at Northwestern 8:30 PM
UNLV at Fresno State 10:00 PM

Two CBS Sports Network games although I always find it weird when a game starts before 7 on a weeknight.  But hey, now we can watch the FOX Sports One game which probably ends up as a blowout but still….you can watch it if you have FloSports.  Other than that?  Meh.

UPDATE: tOSU-NW has been moved to the Big Ten Network because of the ALCS being moved to FOX Sports One.  The postponement and WWE Smackdown being on FOX made this all happen.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#3 Clemson at Louisville Noon
Georgia Tech at Miami Noon
#6 Wisconsin at Illinois Noon
Kent State at Ohio Noon
#9 Florida at South Carolina Noon
Purdue at #23 Iowa Noon
Houston at UConn Noon
West Virginia at #5 Oklahoma Noon
Iowa State at Texas Tech Noon
NC State at Boston College Noon
Lafayette at Georgetown Noon
#11 Auburn at Arkansas Noon

It’s an alright start to the day I guess.  Not as great as last week but still good.  Problem is it’s quite a few cases of a good, ranked team playing a not-so-good unranked team.  Also, if you are a masochist, you can immerse yourself in UConn football.

And yes there is a Peachtree doubleheader (at this point).  Never seen that before and it’s kind of bizarre to be frank.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#12 Oregon at #25 Washington 3:30 PM
Duke at Virginia 3:30 PM
#20 Minnesota at Rutgers 3:30 PM
Indiana at Maryland 3:30 PM
#2 LSU at Mississippi State 3:30 PM
USF at Navy 3:30 PM
Temple at #19 SMU 3:30 PM sp logo
Tulsa at #21 Cincinnati 3:30 PM
North Carolina at Virginia Tech 3:30 PM
Southern Miss at Louisiana Tech 3:30 PM
#18 Baylor at Oklahoma State 4:00 PM
#22 Missouri at Vanderbilt 4:00 PM
Middle Tennessee at North Texas 4:00 PM

Some pretty damn good games here.  OK more like one great game and a bunch of good ones.  Oregon-Washington could end up being massive in the Pac-12 scheme of things (and pretty much put the nail in the coffin for the conference).  Baylor has a bit of a landmine game as they head to Stillwater to play the Cowboys.  Oh and SMU is in tough to remain undefeated as they host Temple.  Finally, a Stadium game is being shown on Peachtree as the back half of their doubleheader.  Yes this is bizarre and unprecedented.  Not important but just watch it be an amazing game with a fantastic finish.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Kentucky at #10 Georgia 6:00 PM
East Carolina at UCF 7:00 PM
Tulane at Memphis 7:00 PM
Colorado at Washington State 7:00 PM
#16 Michigan at #7 Penn State 7:30 PM
Florida State at Wake Forest 7:30 PM
Texas A&M at Ole Miss 7:30 PM

Again, the specialty pack showing four games in this timeslot.  Fifteen for Saturday, eighteen for the week.  That’s a loaded schedule.  The Michigan-PSU game is huge and could make my predictions about Michigan look terrible if the Nittany Lions pull off the win.  It also has the weird 6:00 ESPN timeslot which leads to something I loath: the three-hour window.  It’s like ESPN, who is basically the home for college football, has no idea about how long college football games take.  Ugh.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Tennessee at #1 Alabama 9:00 PM
#14 Boise State at BYU 10:15 PM
Nevada at Utah State 10:15 PM
Air Force at Hawaii 11:00 PM

The back half of the weird 6:00-9:00 (69, hehehe) ESPN doubleheader has Tennessee probably being dominated by Alabama.  Big game in Provo that could put the Group of Five in a massive ball of chaos.  And late-night start (here) as we get CBSSN going to the islands for Hawaii Fighting Rainbow Warriors football!

Games to set your eyeballs on

Michigan at Penn State (7:30, ABC) – Big Blue vs. The Whiteout.  This is the Wolverines’ chance to truly get back in the College Football Playoff conversation.  But we know that playing Penn State, at night, during the Whiteout at Beaver Stadium, is one of the toughest college football atmospheres to play in.  Biggest game of the week and a huge determining factor in what will happen in the Big Ten East.

Oregon at Washington (3:30, ABC) – Could Mario Cristobal’s Oregon Ducks be the Pac-12’s best CFP hope?  They almost clinch the Pac-12 North with a win in Seattle this Saturday.  This could mean the Ducks are finally back for the first time since the Chip Kelly era.  As for Washington, hey Chris Petersen…there you go.  A game starting at 12:30 locally.  So stop bitching about game times since this could have easily been put on late night on ESPN.

Arizona State at Utah (6:00, Pac-12 Network) – This is a coup for the Pac-12 Network.  Unlike the Big Ten Network or SEC Network, the Pac-12 Network never gets games like this.  I am honestly surprised this wouldn’t have somehow made its way to FOX but this is what happens during the baseball playoffs.  Anyway, Herm Edwards has done an impressive job with the Sun Devils and they would be on the precipice of the Top 10 (I know…crazy!) with a win in the Mormon state.  When was the last time the Sun Devils were true contenders?  Back in the Jake “The Snake” Plummer days?

Temple at SMU (3:30, TSN2) – Did anyone think the freakin’ SMU Mustangs would be undefeated at this point?  Honestly I am surprised it didn’t somehow get an ABC timeslot because I know Disney likes to put the huge American conference games on there.  Temple upset Memphis last week and could finish off the upset double if they somehow win in Dallas this weekend.  Saying that, part of me would love to have SMU, undefeated, as a New Year’s Six contender going into November because it is so out of left field.

Baylor at Oklahoma State (4:00, FOX) – Another team that no one thought would be undefeated.  I know that a lot of people still hate Baylor thanks to Art Briles.  I get it but I start to feel its unfair to the current staff and current players (and current students for that matter).  He’s not there anymore, people so who gives a fuck.  Let’s celebrate the fact that we have an odd contender to the Big XII king (Oklahoma) other than Texas.  Matt Rhule has done a fantastic job as the Bears head man but this feels like a huge landmine game.  Again, this team could go into their game against the Sooners, undefeated, with perhaps a CFP spot on the line.  We need more programs other than the blue bloods every year.

Honourable mention: Kentucky at Georgia (6:00, specialty pack); Boise State at BYU (10:15, TSN2); LSU at Mississippi State (3:30, CBS)

Some gambling fun and games

I have no shame in saying I was wrong in some of my picks last week.  Honestly, I never have shame for that.  Here’s this week picks:

Boise State over BYU

SMU over Temple

Georgia over Kentucky

LSU over Mississippi State

Washington over Oregon (mild upset)

Utah over Arizona State

Penn State over Michigan

Oklahoma State over Baylor (huge upset)

North Texas over Middle Tennessee

Duke over Virginia (another upset)

Ohio over Kent State

Early schedule post this week thanks to the Wednesday night game although don’t expect this every week.  I just figured I had some time so I could get this out early for all you readers.  See what a nice guy I am?

Tomorrow night we also have some Thursday Night Football as per usual.  It’s the Broncos and Chiefs.  Honestly this should be a blowout but the Chiefs have looked relatively average over the past few weeks.  I wonder if Joe and Troy will just do more Smackdown promo reads if things get out of hand.

So we shall see how my viewing goes this weekend.  Busy time early on.  Fantasy basketball draft at night.  Anyway, I will figure out a way.  Either that or I will spend a couple hours just watching highlights on Sunday.  Have a great weekend everyone (despite the fact it’s only hump day).

Let’s get some Big Ten predictions and some coach banter

Hey let’s see what’s going on with some of the head coaches in the Big Ten this season:

  • Pat Fitzgerald says that the attendance issue in college football is mostly due to younger people being addicted to their phones.  Not saying he isn’t wrong saying many are seemingly attached to their phones but to say that that is the reason they aren’t coming to games is ridiculous.  How about lower ticket prices?  That would be a good start.  Plus if you can watch like 25-50 college football games in one day from the comfort of your home then why would you go to the stadium?  And you get all the beer and pizza you want.
  • Jim Harbaugh thinks some players are using mental health issues as an excuse to enter the transfer portal.  Wow.  This is such a shit take even considering it comes from Captain Khaki.
  • P.J. Fleck thinks society has a commitment problem.  This coming a couple years after leaving Western Michigan after signing a six-year contract extension.  I don’t mind him doing what he did.  But don’t say that society (translation: the players) has a commitment problem because it just makes it sound like you hate players transferring out of your program.  Sorry, that’s what you signed up for P.J.  And you get paid very well to do so.
  • Scott Frost received a pair of 22-year-old underwear from a fan.  Not a 22-year-old’s pair of underwear (which would be creepy anyway); a pair of underwear from 1997 from a fan.  This fan wore said pair of undergarments during Nebraska’s win over Missouri in the Flea Kicker game and decided to give it to Frost.  Some college football fans are insane.

So there you go.  Great eh?  College football is so crazy yet we are so enthralled by it.  There will be more Fun-Time Notes and Shit below the standings.  Enjoy!  Or don’t.  Doesn’t matter.  I know you will if you’ve read this far (or at least that’s what I am telling myself):

Conference Overall
East W L W L
Michigan 8 1 11 1
Ohio State 7 2 10 2
Penn State 6 3 9 3
Michigan State 6 3 9 3
Maryland 2 7 3 9
Indiana 1 8 4 8
Rutgers 0 9 2 10
West
Nebraska 7 2 10 2
Wisconsin 6 3 9 3
Iowa 6 3 9 3
Northwestern 5 4 7 5
Purdue 4 5 6 6
Minnesota 4 5 6 6
Illinois 1 8 4 8

Fun-Time Notes and Shit

  • The Big Ten still has to be considered, at the very least, the 1A to the SEC’s 1B.  The top part of this conference is insane and the Big Ten East is still, for the third year in a row, the toughest division in college football.  Poor Rutgers.
  • Yet again I am not selecting Ohio State to win the division.  But this year there a lot of experts out there (me not being one) who say that it’s finally Michigan’s year.  Seriously.  So of course, other than Michigan, who is tOSU losing to, Bossman?  Michigan State.  They kept the Buckeyes in check for a little over three quarters last year when they really had no right to considering how they were playing.  This year I think they finish the job.  Now watch me be wrong.
  • Saying all that about being one of the toughest conferences in the land, it can make the College Football Playoff an issue.  Any B1G team has to run the non-conference table to start.  Don’t do that and the chances of making the CFP are slim.  Lose a conference game on top of that and there is no hope.  The Big Ten really can’t afford another year with no team in the dance.  If so, that first comment I made in the notes can be thrown out.
  • Sorry to Maryland, Indiana and Rutgers in advance but you three know where you stand in that division.
  • I have ten bowl teams coming out of the conference that seems like a lot but it really isn’t.  Ten out of fourteen teams is barely over 70%.  Some conferences are at that mark as well.  I mean if there’s going to be a boatload of bowl games then you can’t complain that this many teams in one conference can be in the postseason.  Or you can be like me, come up with a plan to fix the bowl games that actually does reduce the amount of teams going but still keeps things exciting.
  • Hey remember the Hot Seat report I do every season?  Somehow Lovie Smith has survived this entire time.  And has a contract extension that will probably keep him in Champaign for a few more years.  Which honestly perplexes me.  The conclusion here?  Lovie is CFB Head Coach Highlander…he can never be killed.
  • Yep I am drinking the Lincoln Koolaid.  I have Nebraska winning the West Division and having their best season since they won the Legends Division under Bo Pelini back in 2012.  Scott Frost will win Coach of the Year and Adrian Martinez will get a bit of Heisman chatter.  I’m calling it!
  • And I’ve got Nebraska giving Big Blue a hard time in the Big Ten Championship before Harbaugh’s boys pull away and win their first Big Ten Championship in fifteen years.  This gives Michigan an inside track into the CFP but you will have to wait if I have them going there until sometime in August.  Also, this is the first time in four years I haven’t picked Wisconsin to win the West.

Next up will be the sunniest of conferences (supposedly), the Sun Belt.  Two conferences plus the Independents down, eight more to go.  I guess I better get my ass in gear then!  Man the anticipation I have (and many others have) for Week Zero is intensifying.  Especially this year since we have a bonafide big-time Power Five matchup to start the season with Florida and Miami.  Can.  Not.  Wait.  30 days away folks!  30 days.  Have a great rest of the week and weekend everyone.

Most Important Games of the 2019 College Football Season – Part Quatro

If you don’t know who these guys are well….I guess that just means you never watched wrestling (same thing I said last year for part four).  Yes it’s not the greatest stable of all-time but the nWo was amazing and a revelation in pro wrestling (that I believe was stolen from Japan but whatever).  I am going to do a rating system for the final weeks of the system using nWo members.  I have to be careful though since they had like 10,000 members or something like that so I will choose wisely to get my point across…I hope.  If you have no idea what I am talking about then don’t worry…it probably means you’re normal.

We’re at the end of this exercise for this season.  Final four weeks of the regular season.  Two great weeks, one average week, one below-average week and NO BAD WEEKS.  Even SEC Sleepwalk Saturday can’t really be called that because it’s not a horrible week.  So November is gonna be something else in 2019.  Here we go.

Week 11

This week is the third best week here.  Quite important in the grand scheme of things but not top level like the real superstars.  So Week 11 would be one of Syxx, Scott Steiner or The Giant.

Game of the Week: LSU at Alabama (3:30, CBS) – The yearly Bama-LSU primetime SEC on CBS game is not happening this season.  This year CBS and the SEC have gone with Notre Dame-Georgia as their primetime pick for the season.  They can try and get a second one during the season but that has rarely happened.  Also it would have to be where Alabama and LSU are both at least top five if not #1 and #2.  Not saying that won’t happen: both teams look like serious contenders this year.

Other Really Important Games: Iowa State at Oklahoma (Noon, FOX Sports One) – Honestly it was between this and Kansas State-Texas for the Noon FOX spot.  I have a feeling it will be switched from what I have unless either the Wildcats or Longhorns are leading the Big XII at this point.  Anyway, this is a huge Big XII matchup.  You could even call it yuge.  It’s nice to see teams like Iowa State being considered really good teams after years of thinking of them as Iowa State.

Clemson at NC State (7:30, ABC) – Still waiting for some team to usurp the Tigers to be #1 in the ACC.  This might be the best shot right here with the Wolfpack hosting Clemson at night in Raleigh.  I can understand why many are always down on the ACC since it truly is a one-team conference until further notice.  Also, I am sure we will hear an inkling of Dave Doeren being on the hot seat: a yearly tradition.

Missouri at Georgia (7:00, specialty pack) – Missouri is an interesting team coming into this season.  Drew Lock is gone which is a massive hole to fill.  But it feels like they are kind of team that might have a chance to compete in the SEC East.  A win here would turn the SEC East upside down (unless Florida already beat the Dawgs at the Cocktail Party then it would be more like a nail in the coffin for UGA’s championship aspirations).

Penn State at Minnesota (Noon, ABC) – Honestly it feels a bit weird to put Minnesota in this spot.  But it’s Minnesota.  The Golden Gophers.  You kind of expect them to win between six and eight games and lose an important game that they should have won.  Penn State should also be a contender so this may end up not being that close.  Hopefully Minny surprises me.  But this is the reason this gets ABC’s version of the death spot, kicking off at Noon.

Iowa at Wisconsin (3:30, ABC) – ABC gets all three of their games on this list.  Amazingly enough, that is quite the accomplishment and I don’t think it has happened often at all.  This is your typical Big Ten affair.  When people think of Big Ten football they think of Ohio State-Michigan of course.  Then probably this.  Or this kind of game.  Great defense.  A lot more rushing than the normal college football game.  Hardnosed.  And other adjectives I’m sure.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Tennessee at Kentucky (Noon, CBS) – Underrated?  For sure.  We will hear about it all week, especially if one or both of these teams is somehow in the Top 25.  Then of course it would be in the most important games section but I digress.  In essence, here we have the classic college football power up against a potential burgeoning college football power.  It’s the kind of game both teams will feel they have to win.  It’s also the opening game of the second, and last, CBS doubleheader of the season so hopefully you like Carter Blackburn and Aaron Taylor since that is who you will get.

Best Group of Five Game: Utah State at Fresno State (7:00, CBS Sports Network) – Hey a game here that doesn’t involve Boise State or UCF.  Nice.  Both of these teams are still quite good in the Mountain West and will of course be underrated because they had the audacity to be in the same conference as Boise State (USU takes it further by being in the same DIVISION as the Broncos.  The gall!).  They are also locked in during a timeslot that isn’t exactly brimming with amazing games.  So this could get a lot of attention if the game is close late.

Worst Power Five Game: Texas Tech at West Virginia (3:30, FOX Sports One) – I will be getting this network soon.  Yes I will.  So then I can watch it on Saturdays from late August to the end of the year.  And no other times.  No sirree Bob.

Week 12

Fourth best week of the college football season.  What this does is really set the table for the end of the regular season and starts paring down the true contenders from the pretenders.  I would say Week 12 is Scott Hall or Kevin Nash (or both).

Game of the Week: Georgia at Auburn (3:30, CBS) – This game is majorly important and for obviously different reasons.  UGA has a true contender in the East in Florida and Auburn has Alabama to deal with.  It was tough picking a true GOTW with the calibre of games this week.  The next two could also qualify for this spot and no one would bat an eye to be honest.  Unless you are one of those people that truly believe that the huge Virginia Tech-Georgia Tech Techmo Bowl deserves the top spot.

Other Really Important Games: Michigan State at Michigan (7:30, ABC) – There is pretty much no way that ABC/ESPN will let this one go to FOX.  They lose The Game every year and I am sure a few other good Big Ten games.  And considering ABC loves putting Big Ten games on in primetime it would force their hand into doing something different which wouldn’t be a good look.  Also this could be considered the game of the week, so there’s that.  Unfortunately Sean McDonough would not be doing this game (HE DROPPED THE BALL! as his voice cracks)

Alabama at Mississippi State (7:15, specialty pack) – I will admit that most of the reason this game sits here is because of that prick Saban and his stupidly good Crimson Tide squad.  However, we have Fitter Joe Moorhead now to contend with.  I guess he just won’t lose his breath pacing the sidelines?  I don’t know.  CBS might bite on this game depending on how many appearances Auburn and Georgia have already had on the Eyeball Network.  The one they don’t pick will get the ESPN primetime spot and a possible appearance on TSN.

South Carolina at Texas A&M (Noon, specialty pack) – Hey remember when the SEC Network started and Texas A&M blew South Carolina out of the water?  Ah, good times.  I know the ACC Network is hoping that doesn’t happen in their opening game.  They are hoping more for the way the Big Ten Network started (Appalachian State…has stunned the college football world!).  Anyway, this should be a really good game but it is only the third-best SEC game of the week.  Quite a week for the conference that just means more.

Texas at Iowa State (3:30, FOX) – This could end up as the premier game on FOX…meaning at Noon Eastern.  I am sure that some Big XII fans absolutely loathe 11:00 am start times.  I don’t blame them to be honest since you have anywhere from five to seven home games a season and getting there for a morning kickoff would be difficult.  But if you want a national audience, sometimes you have to do that.

Florida at Missouri (7:30, specialty pack) – Not often that games from the SEC Network make this list.  Then again, it’s not that often that this many SEC games are on the list, period.  So who the hell made the SEC conference schedule and what is their beef with Mizzou?  Back-to-back games with Georgia and Florida?  That’s brutal.  One of the toughest two-game stretches in all of college football this season.  If Tennessee is any good then that will make three tough divisional games in a row.  Then again, life’s not fair.

Stanford at Washington State (7:30, FOX) – So of course as soon as I talk about 9:00 am kickoffs, there is an article put up talking about the Pac-12 almost needing to test that out to see if it would work.  And honestly, I think it would.  It might suck but if it’s one or two games a season for the whole conference, most people won’t care.  Who wants to bet that this game is played in snow up in Pullman?

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Minnesota at Iowa (Noon, specialty pack) – Minnesota appearing twice?  P.J. Fleck rowing that boat like he’s never rowed before obviously.  Lately, Iowa has had Minnesota’s number but if the Gophers continue to improve then soon enough, Fleck will be the most popular college football coach in the history of the state of Minnesota, surpassing Hayden Fox.

Best Group of Five Game: Fresno State at San Diego State (Friday, 9:30, specialty pack) – The odd 6:30 local start on a Friday night should make attendance look rather, um, sparse for the first quarter.  Especially in the cavernous Murph/Qualcomm/SDCCU Credit Union whatever.  The Mountain West continues to be rather top-heavy as it has been for the past half-decade or so.  I would include these two, Boise State and Utah State and then……..anyone?  These four, at this point, seem to be the only ones with a snowball’s chance at the New Year’s Six spot.  I’d say all the Group of Five conferences are like this but this one probably has the greatest disparity between the top teams and the bottom ones…until I realize the American has UCF and UConn.

Worst Power Five Game: Arizona State at Oregon State (10:00, FOX Sports One) – Oregon State and Rutgers I think are going to be in the running for worst Power Five team this season.  This week, the Beavers get this spot at the bottom.

Week 13

This used to be the week I didn’t like.  I didn’t hate it because it’s college football and I can’t hate it.  But it used to be the week that many teams, especially SEC ones, would schedule easy games before American Thanksgiving weekend.  And don’t get me wrong, it is still happening this season.  But it’s not as bad this year.  Oh no.  And there are a couple of massive games as well.  So Week 13 (normally Week 12) has somewhat redeemed itself!  Huzzah!  For that reason, I can’t use the worst nWo member, Vincent, to represent this week.  So I will go with someone who wasn’t exactly the greatest wrestler but who could step up when needed.  Week 13 is now Konnan.

Game of the Week: Texas A&M at Georgia (3:30, CBS) – See what I mean?  This would be one of the top 2 games in almost any week of the season.  Can’t really complain, right?  By this point we will have a very good idea where both of these teams stand in terms of the rankings and inside the SEC.  This could end up being the most important SEC game of the year if both teams are really good, which is a distinct possibility.

Other Really Important Games: Penn State at Ohio State (7:30, ABC) – I can honestly say that this is almost guaranteed to get the ABC primetime slot this week.  The only way this wouldn’t happen is if Penn State isn’t nearly as good as predicted since tOSU definitely should be in the Top 10 for most of the season.  A far cry from last year’s second game which I was concerned wouldn’t be aired at all here since it was a FOX Regional Game!  I’m glad the schedule makers have learned their lesson (somewhat).

TCU at Oklahoma (3:30, ABC) – If TCU has a special season, this could end up being a surprise GOTW if not a game of the year.  Oklahoma will keep rolling along although their spot at the top of the Big XII is being challenged by Texas (IS BACK!).  In a week that still isn’t amazing compared to other weeks, ABC should get a bonus if they can grab this one and the previous game.

Texas at Baylor (3:30, specialty pack) – Texas (IS BACK!) has an equally important game this week against a Baylor team that has come back from being, well, an awful football program (and not just on the field).  Matt Rhule has done an incredible job in Waco and the Bears can put up a lot of points like those classic Bears teams of, um, a decade ago.  This feels like a speed bump game so the Horns better be careful.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: UCLA at USC (4:00, FOX Sports One) – OK still only four games in the first two sections.  I never said this week was amazing, just improved.  These teams were, let’s be honest, horrible last year.  At least by their standards.  A Battle for Los Angeles with two good programs is not only good for college football, it’s good for the Pac-12 which needs something to clean off the stench of their conference continually shitting the bed and not being even considered for the College Football Playoff.

Best Group of Five Game: Boise State at Utah State (10:30, CBS Sports Network) – This is essentially your Mountain West Mountain Division championship right here.  Honestly, no other team is close to these two.  Not saying it can’t happen but these two teams seem like a couple of ladder rungs above the rest.  CBS Sports Network was smart to pick this up before the season started.  Their schedule always seems to have at least one game every week that is quite good and easily could have gone to ESPN.  It’s becoming more of a must-have for college football fans (the Army and Navy games don’t hurt either).

Worst Power Five Game: Duke at Wake Forest (7:30, specialty pack) – A few games could have fallen in this spot and none of them are particularly bad.  We’ve got this game with two perennially underrated ACC schools.  Or I could have picked a relatively important Kansas State-Texas Tech affair.  Or another Big XII matchup in Kansas going to Ames to play Iowa State.  Or even Oregon State facing Washington State out in the Palouse.  Honestly, none of these games are bad, per se, but could end up being blowouts in a couple of cases.  Watch all of them be really close and we can’t see a few because they are on the Pac-12 Network or FOX Sports One or the Ocho.

Week 14

The crowning moment of the regular season for college football fans.  The week most college football fans look forward to.  It’s American Thanksgiving Week(end).  And God damn it am I ever going to watch a shitload of football.  So honestly, no one better bother me unless it’s a question about COLLEJ FOOTBAW!  I will probably gain like ten pounds just from the food and drink I have over those three days.  Since this is the pinnacle, there is only one person that belongs in this spot: Hollywood Hulk Hogan, BROTHER!

Game of the Week: Alabama at Auburn (3:30, CBS) – Hey remember when there was a rumour that this game would be moved to Black Friday?  I wonder if they will ever consider that again.  Not that it’s a bad idea.  It’s more that there are some people that do not have that Friday off and would be pissed off to miss a game like this.  Anyway, pick this game or the next one on the list as GOTW, don’t matter to me.  Both these games will be extremely important barring a collapse by one of the combatants.

Other Really Important Games: Ohio State at Michigan (Noon, FOX) – The other potential Game of the Week/Year.  Going into this season, it looks like the time is ripe for Big Blue to finally slay the demon known as THE Ohio State University.  Michigan has Shea Patterson and a lot of their starters from last year back in 2019.  tOSU, on the other hand, breaks in a new head coach and has some changes on both sides of the ball.  This should be good regardless.  And I expect GUS JOHNSON to go insane like he usually does.

Texas A&M at LSU (7:00, TSN3) – There is still a possibility that this ends up on the SEC Network.  For real.  Luckily for fans who don’t get the specialty pack, TSN goes nuts on college football because a) the CFL is done by this point and b) there are a lot of good games on the Saturday.  For once we should not have any coaching hot seat discussions.  Which is fine by me since sometimes they dominate the conversation a little too much (see Miles, Les).

Clemson at South Carolina (Noon, TSN3) – It feels like all the SEC teams are at home this season with their Week 14 rivalry games.  It means there are a few less issues compared to when they are all on the road and a really good game ends up on the SEC Network and a not-so-good game may end up on ESPN in primetime.  Like the last few years, this will be the final hurdle before the postseason for the Tigers but this may be a serious one this season as South Carolina looks to be a bit improved and all it takes is one upset to, well, upset the apple cart so to speak.

Oklahoma at Oklahoma State (3:30, ABC/TSN4) – Could be a Big XII Championship play-in game.  Also, it’s BEDLAM!  Why it was moved to the final week of the season is anyone’s guess but it just adds to to the majestic college football ideal that is American Thanksgiving Week.  Could be moved to the primetime slot depending on how the entire Saturday schedule shapes up.

Washington at Washington State (Friday, 4:00, FOX) – The Apple Cup is almost always a joy to watch.  And it’s back on Black Friday.  Noice!  It doesn’t look like FOX will have a primetime game on this day so this should go on in the 4:00 timeslot.  So there’s no way Chris Petersen can complain about this, right?  By now we will know if the Pac-12 has, once again, beaten up on each other so badly that no team stands out or if there is one team that has stood above the rest.  Honestly, getting Mike Leach into the CFP or NY6 would be fantastic.

Notre Dame at Stanford (7:30, ABC/TSN4) – See what I meant from the Bedlam part of this post?  This could be essentially a play-in game for the College Football Playoff or New Year’s Six.  And it’s when TSN goes crazy and broadcasts a bunch of college football (which I also mentioned previously).  Maybe the winner of this game should play the winner of what is basically another play-in game and play the ULTIMATE play-in game…in Dayton.  Don’t reply yet, NCAA.  Just think about it.

Florida State at Florida (7:30, specialty pack) – As of right now I have this game on the SEC Network.  No, I am not joking.  The only way this moves off of there is if Florida State is better than many believe they will be.  But considering it’s in Gainesville, it can’t go to ABC which leaves ESPN networks as the only options.  And with other conferences almost being guaranteed a spot somewhere on the Saturday this could get dicey.  So what I am saying is yes, this is one game you might not be able to see if you don’t have the specialty pack.  Be forewarned.

Virginia Tech at Virginia (Friday, 8:00, TSN3) – Good idea to move the Commonwealth Cup to Black Friday as this game usually always means something…even if it’s just for bowl-eligibility.  Interesting thing is that this could be for the ACC Coastal title.  Honestly, is there any team that stands out in that division?  Nope.  It’ll be a matchup between Justin Fuente and Bronco Mendenhall, two guys who rarely smile.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Iowa at Nebraska (2:30, BTN) – This has gone from being on ABC, to ESPN, to FOX, and now to BTN.  Ugh.  I have a feeling this game (which I dub Farmageddon but isn’t the real Farmageddon despite the fact it should be the real Farmageddon) will be super close and could have major Big Ten West repercussions since there isn’t really a single team in that division that could be considered the obvious favourite.

Best Group of Five Game: Appalachian State at Troy (Friday, 4:00, ESPN+) – Honestly I don’t think we will see this but it could end up being the best Sun Belt game ever.  It’s only going to be a matter of time before a Sun Belt team nabs that New Year’s Six spot for the Group of Five.  There is a slight possibility it ends up on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU which would put it on the specialty pack so fingers crossed!

Worst Power Five Game: Baylor at Kansas (Noon, FOX Sports One) – I was actually tempted to put Indiana-Purdue here since both teams won’t be as good (on paper) as last year’s squads.  But BU-KU won’t be available to most Canadians where many Canadians can get IU-PU.  So I based it on that.  Either way, it will be a great week of college football!

Weeks 15 and 16

I’m not going to rate these weeks.  Week 16 is Army-Navy which is always fun.  I still wish for a day when we have an 11-0 Navy or an 11-0 Army coming in with a New Year’s Six spot on the line.  Talk about ratings!  As for the conference championships, other than the Pac-12, they are all on the Saturday now.  So some will get better attendance but worse TV coverage.  Don’t know if one is better than the other to be honest with you.

It’s done!  The most important games blog posts are in the books and it officially means I am gearing up for college football.  Got two magazines already: Athlon and Lindy’s.  Phil Steele magazine is shipping soon.  Will look for Street & Smith’s probably some time next week.  And there you have it…I will have all my summer reading material ready to go.  Already about 50 pages into Athlon.  I guess that’s what happens when you have been five months without the sport (I don’t really count the weird all-star games).

Next up is the network specific posts.  I always hope to get it as accurate as possible but as they say, “Card Subject to Change.”  This means we are getting closer to the summer and the final countdown towards college football season.  73 days away from Week Zero and counting down.

Anyway, all y’all (as they say in the South) have a great rest of the week!

Let’s get back to some (somewhat) normal bowl projections, alright?

After last week’s crazy 1984-inspired bowl projections, I come back to reality with my normal set of bowl projections.  Especially since most of what I had stated in that post blew up spectacularly.  Again, I am sure these projections will change a few hundred times since bowl committees like to play games and some don’t even follow their own tie-ins.  Yeah, it’s nuts and very college football-esque.  Let’s begin.

Cotton Bowl CFP Poll #2 vs. CFP Poll #3 Clemson vs. Notre Dame
Orange Bowl CFP Poll #1 vs. CFP Poll #4 Alabama vs. Ohio State

Yes I have Ohio State in.  And yes I have them at #4.  Let me explain:

  • Ohio State wins out.  Completely.  They squeak by Michigan and win the Big Ten Championship with ease.  With the way the rest of the Top 10 teams are going, this would allow tOSU to sneak up the middle and grab the final spot.
  • Alabama also wins out.  Doesn’t matter if they have difficulty with Mississippi State or Auburn or even Georgia.  They win out and they’re #1.  Why?  Because I have them beating UGA in the SEC Championship.
  • Clemson and Notre Dame run the table from here on in.  Which makes them easy selections since the Big XII and Pac-12 are a bit of a mess (especially the Pac-12).

Not too bad although some of you are probably already a bit perturbed by the Ohio State selection.  Now let’s get to the next part of the equation.

Sugar Bowl SEC #1 vs. Big XII #1 Georgia vs. Oklahoma
Rose Bowl Big Ten #1 vs. Pac-12 #1 Michigan vs. Washington
Fiesta Bowl CFP At-Large vs. CFP At-Large UCF vs. Texas
Peach Bowl CFP At-Large vs. CFP At-Large NC State vs. Kentucky

Yes some of this looks a bit wacky.  Let me explain:

  • UCF will win the War on I-4 over USF and finish the regular season unbeaten (just like last season).  Then they beat Houston for the AAC Championship.  No matter what, the other Group of Five contenders (most notably Utah State and Fresno State at this point) won’t be close to the Knights so it’s an easy pick to put them in the Fiesta Bowl.
  • NC State will win their remaining games and enough will happen above them for them to sneak in as the last New Year’s Six team and be slotted into the Peach Bowl.
  • Georgia will be knocked out of the Top 4 from a huge loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship.  They drop to #5 and get the SEC tie-in to the Sugar Bowl.
  • Oklahoma will end up in the Big XII Championship against West Virginia and pull out the victory to get the Sugar Bowl spot opposite Oklahoma.
  • Washington will win the Apple Cup over Washington State and beat whoever comes out of the Pac-12 South in quick fashion to clinch their spot in the Granddaddy of them All.
  • Texas will be resting on conference championship weekend and will watch Oklahoma beat WVU to allow them to juuuuuuuuuuust leap past the Mountaineers and take the spot in the Fiesta Bowl.
  • Michigan, despite an amazing season, will lose The Game (again) to tOSU and fall to the Rose Bowl which will actually be a bit of a disappointment to Big Blue Nation.
  • Kentucky wins their last few games and stays firmly in the Top 12 to grab a Peach Bowl spot.
  • I have West Virginia (after their Big XII Championship loss), LSU and Penn State just outside the Top 12.

Alright it’s still a bit of a mess.  This week may solve a bit of these issues but it looks like not a ton will happen until American Thanksgiving week.  Now on to the rest of the bowl picture:

A few notes on this:

  • Two teams who are bowl-eligible would be left out of the party.  At this point they would both be from the Sun Belt (Louisiana and Coastal Carolina).
  • BYU and Army do not have tie-ins this season so they are slotted in where a conference does not have enough bowl-eligible teams.  This is why BYU is going to the First Responders Bowl (Big Ten does not have enough bowl-eligible teams to fill their slots) and Army goes to the Armed Forces Bowl (to replace the Big XII).
  • I do not have Florida State in.  I think they will win one of their last three (I am saying it will be Florida) but not the two out of three needed to go bowling.
  • The Pac-12 actually had too many bowl-eligible teams.  So Cal and Colorado end up at the Quick Lane and Birmingham Bowls, respectively.
  • Wyoming also is left out of the Mountain West contracted bowls.  They end up in the final bowl slot available, going to the Cure Bowl as the American conference wouldn’t have enough eligible teams and Liberty I have stuck at 5-6.
  • No one has accepted a bowl bid yet.  This is good.  It feels weird to have teams get invited to bowl games before the conference championship weekend has even started (which is almost four full weeks away).

So tonight we got some MACtion.  It’s on the specialty pack.  Tomorrow night we got more MACtion.  It isn’t appearing yet.  Thursday night we have ACCtion and SWACtion.  It is also not appearing yet.  I assume it will be up soon.

I might post tomorrow.  I might not.  Who knows?  No one.  Not even me.  Enjoy your Tuesday everyone!
