Man, oh man, were there some overreactions this week…oh and the Week 2 College Football TV Schedule

Look, did Colorado surprise a lot of people this past weekend? Absolutely. No doubt about it. Deion Sanders is proving, whether you like him or not, that he can flat-out coach. And overhauling the roster like he did was not a bad idea at all. It does suck for the players that had to transfer out but unfortunately it’s football and the name of the game is winning.

Saying that………the amount of people I saw on Twitter that said Colorado will win 10 or 11 games this season was way too much. It should have been zero. Colorado may be better than advertised but they aren’t all of a sudden a New Year’s Six possibility. But hey, that’s the reactions from Week 1 of college football. Every. Single. Fucking. Year.

So let’s do it again on here! It’s overreaction time! Let’s look at some of the other overreactions you may (or may not) have heard after the Week 1 games were complete:

  • Ohio State is just an average team. Do we expect more from the Buckeyes against a team like Indiana? Sure. But they are bringing in a new quarterback and their best receiver was not 100%. The defense was amazing. Now the offense does have to be ready since in about a week and a half they get Notre Dame and that could get ugly if they don’t produce more points.
  • Colorado will have not one, but TWO Heisman finalists. What in the fuck? Who are the morons saying this? They are out there for sure. I saw them. Sure, they did great in their opening week win over TCU but calm the fuck down. TCU isn’t the TCU of last season for one and it’s only WEEK ONE. Anyway, moving on…
  • Gene Chizik has finally got the defense cooking in Chapel Hill. Again, it’s one game. Do the Heels look improved? Sure. But it’s not like South Carolina played well at all because, for the most part they didn’t. That, and the chain gang wouldn’t eat their hot dogs fast enough. Let’s see how UNC does when a top-notch offense is staring them in the face.
  • Jalen Milroe is already looking like another Alabama Jalen…that being Hurts. My God where do these people come up with this shit? Milroe looked OK but it was Middle Tennessee and he’s playing for Ala-frickin-Bama. We will see how he handles SEC competition before crowning him anything.
  • Washington has the best offense in the country. Could that end up being the case? Possibly. Michael Penix Jr. has already started his Heisman campaign in style. But let’s slow our roll here. There are at least four teams who looked better on offense (Colorado, Florida State, Oklahoma, Oregon) during Week 1. And I wouldn’t even say any of those teams will be the best offense in the country so why go ahead and put the Huskies at #1?
  • Book the Sooners for the Big XII Championship NOW! As I said, their offense was on fire but they were playing Arkansas State. We are all waiting to see if Brent Venables can have a Venables-type defense in Norman. If that happens, this could very well happen. But for now, I wouldn’t book any tickets yet if I were a Sooners fan.
  • Miami is BACK. Ho boy. Pump the damn brakes.

Let’s just put Week 1 behind us, shall we? Let’s move on to Week 2 which…oh my. Well, it’s better than Week 1. That’s really all I can say. But you know what that usually means. That’s right…chaos!

Thursday

USCanada
Murray State at Louisville7:30

Yep, that’s a new logo you see. TSN+ will be showing college football games this year. It kind of mimics the specialty pack but there are a few differences. But if you want to get TSN+ rather than the specialty pack for your college football fix, you are getting close to the same. Not a bad alternative and a good move by TSN to copy ESPN for the 10,000th time.

Friday

USCanada
Indiana State at Indiana7:00
Illinois at Kansas7:30

It kind of feels like this could be a relatively important game when the Illini travel to Lawrence to face the Jayhawks. Imagine saying that even two years ago. You’d be laughed out of whatever building you were in.

Saturday Early

USCanada
Vanderbilt at Wake Forest11:00 AM

Is the quality there? Eh, not really. But there’s choice. A lot of it. Can’t ask for much else. Also…MORNING FOOTBAW! The ACC Network’s weird annual Week 2 quadrupleheader hits again with the odd three hour-and-fifteen-minute windows. This will be a lot easier to do next year when Stanford and California join as you know one of them will host the ACC After Dark Week 2 matchup, guaranteed.

Saturday Afternoon

Kent State at Arkansas4:00
Tulsa at #8 Washington5:00
Appalachian State at #17 North Carolina5:15

Is the afternoon slate better than the Noon slate? Sure. Not by much though. Some intriguing matchups though. As per the rules, one of Texas A&M or Miami must win their game against each other. Ties were outlawed almost three decades ago. Will CyHawk feature more than 30 points? Can App State and UNC put up ridiculous numbers like last year? And this will be Tulane’s opportunity to get a huge leg up in the Group of Five. A win over Ole Miss would be massive.

FIFTEEN GAMES! Holy shit! I think this has to be the most in one timeslot ever on this blog. I don’t feel like checking so let’s just say we have a new record! Plenty of games but most people will be watching one game in particular, that being the Longhorns and the Crimson Tide. If Texas can somehow do what they were robbed of last season and upset Bama, this season turns on its head. This game is so big that they are also showing it on ESPN2 in the US and on TSN+ and the specialty packs. But it’s not the same broadcast. It’s the Pat McAfee Show alternate broadcast. So if you like that kind of thing, have at it.

Also, you will notice we have a new network showing college football. That’s right, the CW, with such hits as 7th Heaven, Gilmore Girls, Smallville and LIV Golf (well it was a hit with the golfers who got fucking PAID with that Saudi blood money) will be showing ACC football (and later on, ACC basketball) this year. This replaces Bally which, for all intents and purposes, is flat broke. There will be games most weeks and, it looks like, at odd times. 6:30? Weird.

FOX quadrupleheader? Don’t mind if I do. TSN2 quadrupleheader? Yes, please. A good week if you are a Canadian as I don’t remember seeing this much college football being shown up here in a while. Maybe things are turning around. Looks like TSN finally gives a shit about things that aren’t the CFL, NFL, and NHL (which they don’t even have the national broadcasting rights to).

Hey, Watch This!

Texas at Alabama (7:00, TSN2/TSN+/specialty pack) – Unequivocally the game of the week and there’s nothing else close. That also means there will be some wild and wacky finishes that might overshadow this game. That is, unless, this is a close one and the Longhorns pull off the upset. Then it will be THE story in college football no matter what else happens.

Ole Miss at Tulane (3:30, TSN+/specialty pack) – As I mentioned above, if the Green Wave pull off a win here in front of what should be a raucous crowd in hot and humid New Orleans, there’s not a whole lot that will prevent them from a perfect regular season and another New Year’s Six spot. Normally I would say this is a lose-lose situation for any Power Five team in this situation but when the Group of Five team is ranked it can count as a big win (as long as that team doesn’t totally shit the bed the rest of the way).

Texas A&M at Miami (3:30, ABC/TSN2) – I made the joke above that one of these teams has to win, as per the rules of college football. We may actually see which one of these teams is back (for the most part) and which team still has some work to do. Now watch it be a 13-10 almost-unwatchable slog.

Nebraska at Colorado (Noon, FOX) – Alright, I’ll bite. Let’s see if the hype matches what ends up happening. Some might have put this higher but that’s crazy. It makes this list because of the talk, not because of the teams involved. And Colorado can’t just win this game by a little. That would prove nothing. If they beat the brakes off the Huskers, then we all have to take notice and maybe think the Buffs could be for real.

Sickos Game of the Week

Temple at Rutgers (7:30, specialty pack) – Look, Rutgers is probably going to start 2-0 which really doesn’t mean a whole lot considering their schedule but still, that’s something right? With everything on at this time, you would have to be a complete psychopath to watch this game. I will make sure to tune in and watch at least a few plays. I feel like I owe it to everyone and myself.

Hubba Bubba Blowout of the Week

Ball State at Georgia (Noon, TSN+/specialty pack) – Time to bring back the blowout of the week segment. And this could be the dictionary definition of blowout. I could see UGA putting up 60 on the poor Cardinals.

Wanna Bet?

Nebraska was actually a good bet. That game ended up exactly how I thought it would (for the most part). Florida, however….well the less said about that one the better. Time for my gambling picks for the second week of the college football season. Use them at your own peril.

Indiana (-30.5) over Indiana State

Purdue (+3) over Virginia Tech (and the outright win)

Ohio State (-41.5) over Youngstown State

Utah (-8) over Baylor

Nebraska (+2.5) over Colorado (and the upset win…definitely going out on a limb with this one)

Michigan (-37.5) over UNLV

Tulane (+7.5) over Ole Miss (but the Rebs will hold on for a close victory)

Texas A&M (-4) over Miami

Alabama (-7) over Texas

Washington State (+6) over Wisconsin (with the Badgers winning a tight affair)

Minnesota (-20.5) over Eastern Michigan

Mississippi State (-9) over Arizona

Stanford (+29.5) over USC (I feel a backdoor cover in this one)

I will be on the Twitter/X machine again this weekend. Even without Tweetdeck I am figuring out how to navigate fairly well. We shall see if I can make it two Saturdays in a row making it all the way to the end. Enjoy the games everyone!

ALL. THE. SCHEDULES!!!!

OK not all the schedules but quite a few. I mean there’s some I may not even take a guess at.

Just like last year I am going to put all my schedule predictions in one long-ass post. So wait until you have to take an absolute monster of a shit before taking this one into the bathroom to read. Let’s go!

This is a crazy transition year for CBS. Out with the old (SEC) and in with the new (Big Ten). A few sprinkles (Mountain West) and you have a brand new college football sundae. Sorry fans, Gary Danielson, as far as I can tell, is still around. Worst part is we have heard him be one of the best analysts in the business. More often than not, though, he goes off on some stupid tangent that ends up with him declaring he has a college football boner for Bama.

As is the norm, I will let you know which games are confirmed. The ones that are not…well, some of them will be right because it makes sense and the rest will be not right because one or both of the teams I predicted to play at that time or not nearly as good as I thought they would be and/or I’m an idiot. So let’s start this bizarrely stupid puzzle and follow it with some It Just Means More Sweet Tea Analysis (which may or may not contain grits):

It Just Means More (Games other than the SEC on CBS) Analysis:

  • I feel like I shouldn’t have to remind you but in all these tables, a game in bold means it has been confirmed. Not bold? Bossman used his dumb brain to try and figure it out.
  • The appearance list will look a bit different this time as it will have a few conferences involved so let’s start with the SEC appearances:
    • 5 times – Alabama, Georgia
    • 3 times – Ole Miss, LSU
    • 2 times – Kentucky, Arkansas, Auburn, Tennessee
    • 1 time – South Carolina, Mississippi State, Florida, Missouri
    • No times – Vanderbilt, Texas A&M
  • Wait, WHAT? No TAMU on CBS? Wow, I honestly didn’t notice until now when I started breaking out the different schedules. Crazy. I guess they will have to prove it this season to maybe get on late in the year.
  • Now we have the Big Ten appearance list:
    • 3 times – Iowa
    • 2 times – Ohio State, Rutgers, Penn State, Nebraska
    • 1 time – Indiana, Northwestern, Michigan, Purdue, Maryland, Minnesota
    • No times – Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois
  • I look at these numbers and can glean….well, nothing from it. Wisconsin is good and appears no times and Rutgers appears twice. However, tOSU also appears twice and Michigan State doesn’t appear at all. Seems all very random. Which could very well be the case at least for this first season.
  • I’m not going to get into the Mountain West game count since there aren’t enough games to see any trends.
  • The Army-Navy game heads to New England for the first time ever. Foxborough gets the game this year and I like this idea. Not saying they have to move it around all over the place but every two or three years to take it out of Philly is a smart move.

What is ABC going to do for this one season without the Big Ten and with the SEC showing up in 2024? They will have to lean heavily on the other three Power Five conferences to carry the load, especially when it comes to the primetime schedule. Don’t worry though: there are enough good teams in these conferences to fill most of these spots where it looks like the network won’t have missed a beat. Then next year, might as well pencil (or pen…or Sharpie) the SEC in for the majority of those primetime games.

But hey we haven’t hit 2024 yet. It’s still 2023 so let’s get to the ESPN on ABC regular season college football schedule for the FBS for this season. I will follow it up with some Power(ful) Two Thoughts:

Power(ful) Two Thoughts

  • Once again, ABC puts on a mega-matchup on the night before Labour Day. LSU-FSU, if it is anything like last year’s game, should be a massive ratings success. Oh and also a game that could shape the entire college football season.
  • With the Big Ten saying adios to ESPN/ABC, the primetime slots really opened up. I expect the ACC to pick up most of those times the Big Ten has left behind with the Big XII and Pac-12 coming in just behind. Right now I have 6 ACC primetime games, 5 Pac-12, and 4 Big XII. Even if I’m wrong with which games go where I see this being pretty equitable.
  • I am not doing a TSN schedule because there is no point right now. TSN struggles to get anything that’s not the CFL scheduled out more than a couple of weeks. Right now I have 23 ABC games that would be simulcast on TSN. That seems high but I am going off of last year’s numbers and it was actually very close to that. So we shall see.
  • I am calling for three games to be on Black Friday on ABC. Miami-BC at Noon and TTU-UT at 7:30 are set. I think they select an American conference game in the middle so that there isn’t a gap in the middle of the day with nothing to show AND to fulfill the American’s contract. Now watch it not happen at all that way.
  • First few weeks are confirmed but that’s pretty much it. The rest is a bit of a crapshoot. Also, if you couldn’t tell Week 2 was a pretty bad week, look at the ABC schedule. Woof. Wisky-Wazzu as the primetime game? Ouch. It’s been a while since there has been that poor a game for the ABC Saturday Night game.
  • Finally it’s time for the conference breakdown. Remember I am doing things slightly differently. Every time a team appears, they get counted as an appearance. So Miami-Boston College, for example, counts as two appearances for the ACC. Here we go:
    • ACC – 37 (including conference championship)
    • Big XII – 29 (including conference championship)
    • Pac-12 – 12 (including conference championship)
    • AAC – 5 (including conference championship)
    • SEC – 5
    • Notre Dame – 4
    • FCS – 2
    • Mountain West – 1
    • Big Ten – 1
  • The ACC is really picking up the slack here. The Big XII is not all that far behind and, ho boy, is the Pac-12 lagging here. Problem is other than their top five teams I don’t feel right putting the rest of the teams in any of the ABC timeslots and that includes Colorado. Also, I have not included bowl tie-ins here because we know that bowls break them all the time.
  • Speaking of bowl games, ABC has SEVEN this time! That’s great! A step in the right direction. I still think the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl should move back to ABC as well but that’s just my opinion (and the opinion of a lot of other people).

For quite a long time it felt like there was quite a drop-off in play-by-play prowess after GUS JOHNSON. But now with Jason Benetti cemented as the number two man, you know you have two solidly called games every week on FOX. Tim Brando is the #3 guy and is pretty good although I still think it would be great to hear him back in the studio.

OK so the Big Ten is a bit more in with FOX meaning the Big XII and Pac-12 might suffer because of that. Let’s find out! Here’s the predicted 2023 FOX college football broadcast schedule followed by some Johnsonian rhetoric.

SOME JOHNSONIAN RHETORIC…..WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

  • So FOX has abandoned putting a game on Labour Day for putting a game on the Thursday before it. Interesting. Not a bad strategy as they can try and get a jump start on the season. Sure Florida-Utah could get more eyeballs but starting with a Big Ten conference game? That will get their fair share of looks for sure.
  • With the Big Ten leaving ESPN/ABC, it means most of their big games will land on FOX. That is a huge coup for the network. Couple that with the few huge games out of the Big XII and Pac-12 and you can finally, honestly, put their Big Noon Saturday schedule up against ABC’s Saturday Primetime schedule. Of course that may all change next year when ESPN/ABC gets the SEC. But for one year, let’s savour this.
  • FOX only going with two Black Friday games again this season and they are both confirmed. And it is two huge games (or could be). TCU-OU could be for a spot in the Big XII Championship. Same with the Civil War game between Oregon State and Oregon. I guess they will be moving WWE Smackdown to FS1 for this night which I’m sure won’t upset wrestling fans in the least.
  • Conference breakdown time! Remember, a conference game I am counting as two appearances for that conference:
    • Big XII – 32
    • Big Ten – 30 (including conference championship)
    • Pac-12 – 17
  • Shockingly, the Big XII has moved to the top of the list. Now, this has more to do with the Big Ten moving some games to NBC and CBS than anything but still, it proves that the Big XII carries a bit more weight than the Pac-12 these days.
  • I have no Mountain West games on the main FOX network. They have quite a few on FOX Sports One, though. I don’t know if FOX’s strategy is to eventually put more than the MWC conference championship on the main network or if they just stay the way they are. I suspect starting next year we will see at least a couple of Mountain West games on the main network, especially when there’s a quadrupleheader.
  • And speaking of quadrupleheaders, I have a feeling we will see two of them just like last season. One is confirmed for Week 2 and I believe the other will land, just like last year, during Week 11. I love the quadrupleheader idea, especially if you only do it twice since it feels special.
  • FOX has only one bowl game and it is the only bowl game, at this time, without a confirmed date. The Holiday Bowl, I believe, will end up on December 27th but that is definitely subject to change.
  • I honestly don’t know what will happen come October with the MLB playoffs. I know during the early rounds, FOX tends not to be used nearly as much as FS1 for their baseball games. Come World Series time though, expect FOX to scale back on college football broadcasting windows.

Alright let’s get to the Notre Dame on NBC sched…WAIT JUST A MINUTE! THAT’S THE BIG TEN’S MUSIC!!!!

For the first time in a loooooooooooong time, Notre Dame will share NBC’s college football coverage with other teams under other contracts. The Big Ten will have games almost every week on the network and usually in primetime going forward. So yeah, this will be the longest NBC schedule I will ever predict unless the network really goes all-in with college football and invites another party (COUGH*Pac-12*COUGH) in to the pool. Let’s get to it!

Touchdown Jesus, Meet Purdue Pete

  • Look, it’s not like the Irish haven’t seen Big Ten teams before. They play at least one every year and probably will until the Earth explodes. But sharing the entire network with them? I have a feeling this may impact Notre Dame’s next contract talks with NBC which will start soon with the contract ending at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
  • Only two primetime Notre Dame games this season but they add a game during Week Zero against Navy over in Ireland. I have the Big Ten moving their game to Noon when the Irish are on in primetime.
  • As for the Big Ten, let’s look at the breakdown:
    • 4 times – Penn State, Purdue, Michigan State
    • 3 times – Michigan
    • 2 times – Maryland, Ohio State
    • 1 time – Northwestern, Illinois, Iowa, Rutgers, Indiana, Wisconsin, Northwestern
    • No times – Nebraska
  • I think more so than the CBS breakdown for the Big Ten, the better teams, for the most part, will appear on NBC more often. I believe that will be the case going forward as well.

Let’s be honest here: nothing much will change for this network. It’s not like they will all of a sudden be showing Michigan-Ohio State. Saying that, it’s one of the channels you almost need to complete your college football viewing experience. I don’t want to speak for anyone else but I love watching close finishes, regardless of the game, so if Rutgers and Northwestern are going down to the wire, I want to watch that shit. Alright let’s get to my projected schedule:

B1G Country Notes (no, not Bryant Reeves)

  • The first three weeks are completely booked. After that…nothing. Well, that’s not entirely true. There are a few homecoming games that are almost guaranteed to hit BTN but I won’t call them confirmed until, well, they are actually confirmed.
  • Let’s get right to the appearance list (with the conference and non-conference split) and then some explanations on the numbers:
    • 8 times – Indiana (3 non-con, 5 conference)
    • 7 times – Northwestern (2 NC, 5 C), Rutgers (3 NC, 4 C)
    • 5 times – Maryland (1 NC, 4 C)
    • 4 times – Purdue (1 NC, 3 C), Illinois (2 NC, 2 C), Michigan State (1 NC, 3 C), Wisconsin (1 NC, 3 C)
    • 3 times – Minnesota (2 NC, 1 C), Iowa (1 NC, 2 C), Penn State (1 NC, 2 C)
    • 2 times – Ohio State (1 NC, 1 C), Michigan (1 NC, 1 C), Nebraska (1 NC, 1 C)
  • Every school must make at least 2 BTN appearances. Plus, one of those appearances has to be a conference game. My predictions satisfy that criteria and I think the amount of appearances will be failry close to what actually happens. I was a bit surprised to see what I had done with Nebraska. Maybe I am drinking a tiny bit of Husker Kool-Aid.

Alright now we have what could be the longest schedule of the bunch. Surprisingly though, it has the most confirmed games, easily. I guess when you have a good portion of the Group of Five stationed here, you will have a lot of games. And if you don’t watch college football on CBSSN? Shame on you. There are some great games on there and you get to see teams you wouldn’t normally see. Time for the huge-ass schedule followed by a few G5 musings:

Gee-Five Musings

  • Really, CBS Sports Network doesn’t have to lock in over 80% of the games. Nice to see that they do though. Honestly, over the past few years, CBSSN has had their fair share of exciting games so waiting to see what ESPN doesn’t take really doesn’t make sense for them. It won’t change the amount of viewers they get (for the most part). Just scoreboard watch like I do.
  • CBSSN lands a couple of Black Friday games this season, which seems to be the norm now. One is confirmed and the other is a MAC game. Which leads us to…
  • The non-confirmed games. Most of them are MAC-controlled games. They will be 12-day selections during the season. The others might not end up happening as those timeslots may be used for something else.
  • Conference breakdown time!
    • Mountain West – 49
    • Conference USA – 33
    • MAC – 21
    • Army – 7
    • AAC (other than Navy) – 6
    • UConn – 5
    • FCS – 5
    • Navy – 4
    • ACC – 3
    • Sun Belt – 3
    • Pac-12 – 2
    • SEC – 1
    • Big XII – 1
    • UMass – 1
  • OK so it was more than conferences but it gives you an idea of what is happening this year versus previous years. During October, Conference USA will have all their conference games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. A crazy idea but hey, that’s how MACtion was born. It also means we will go nearly two months with football almost every day! What’s wrong with that?

We made it! Schedule Journey 2023 is over! Christ, that was long. And no, I will not do a TSN schedule. That would be a complete guess. Up next are the season predictions. Expect that post (which will also be a stupidly long one) some time in late July.

Have a fantastic rest of your Sunday and let’s hope for nice weather this coming week…for people who aren’t stuck working in an office. For those people, I am sure you are fine if it rains all week.

Let the debates begin! – Week 10 College Football TV Schedule

The debates have already commenced.  And it won’t be fun to hear this shit for over a month.  But let’s just get used to it and go through this information.

We all had to know that Cincinnati wouldn’t be as high as their AP (or Bossman) poll ranking.  They were never going to be #2 but the hope is that they would get some semblance of respect and be put in at #4.  You have to wonder if their last two games, where they didn’t exactly light it up against weak American Conference competition, cost them as they start at #6.  Behind Ohio State, which will also stick in their craw.  I’m not too surprised with this, but Alabama at #2 is surprising.  Even worse is Kirk Herbstreit, Joey Galloway and, I believe, Rece Davis all saying that it’s cut and dry for Bama: if they win the SEC Championship they’re in and if they don’t they’re out.  Please.  If Bama stays at #2 until conference championship weekend and then loses to Georgia, I see them getting a lot of support to stay in the Top 4, and maybe even be #3 to avoid a rematch in the semis with the Dawgs.  That’s why these first rankings are still somewhat important because it can frame where you end up later in the season.

But on to better news…last night started football almost every day until November 29th!  The only day with no football will be the day before American Thanksgiving which I don’t understand but whatever.  They should put some MACtion or Fun Belt on there.  Who says no to that?  This is when the serious meat (the brisket even) of the college football season starts so let’s dig in to the schedule for this week!

Wednesday

US Canada
Northern Illinois at Kent State 7:00 PM
Central Michigan at Western Michigan 7:00 PM

MACTION!!!!!!  It has finally returned.  I mean it’s not like last year where they put all six games on a Wednesday night but still, it just feels right.  There were three games last night and two tonight.  Always nice to have some Wednesday night football (hear that ESPN?  So schedule a game the night before Thanksgiving god dammit!).  Anyway, if you thought Northern Illinois and Kent State would be leading their respective divisions heading into November then head to Vegas because you are extremely lucky (or go to a doctor to get the horseshoe out of your ass).

Thursday

US Canada
Georgia State at Louisiana 7:30 PM
Delaware State at Morgan State 7:30 PM

Two games, one in FBS, one in FCS.  It is technically football but I see a lot of people changing the channel to the NFL Thursday Night Football game featuring….the Jets and the Colts.  OK, maybe not.

Friday

US Canada
Princeton at Dartmouth 6:00 PM
Virginia Tech at Boston College 7:30 PM

Technically, Virginia Tech is still in the hunt for the ACC Coastal title because that conference, and that division in particular, are almost always a mess, behind the top team (which was usually Clemson and is now Wake Forest).  A loss by the Hokies may just pretty much hand the division to Pittsburgh but who knows considering the season we’ve seen so far.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Army vs. Air Force (in Arlington, TX) 11:30 AM
#9 Wake Forest at North Carolina Noon
#25 Pittsburgh at Duke Noon
Louisiana Tech at UAB Noon
Missouri at #1 Georgia Noon
Illinois at #20 Minnesota Noon
SMU at Memphis Noon
#5 Ohio State at Nebraska Noon
Liberty at #16 Ole Miss Noon
Georgia Tech at Miami 12:30 PM

A good amount of games but nothing hugely special although that could be the theme of the week to be honest.  Nothing is huge but Wake heading to North Carolina as an undefeated underdog will be an interesting watch.  It’s insane that they are not favoured but it shows that Wake still doesn’t quite get the respect that most Power Five teams do.  Army-AFA could be done by 1 in the afternoon.  And perhaps even a halftime coach shitcanning?  I can’t see things going well for the Huskers in this one.  This would mean the hot seat Scott Frost currently inhabits would get even hotter.  Does he make it to the end of the season?  Maybe, but I doubt he coaches in 2022, at least in Lincoln.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#3 Michigan State at Purdue 3:30 PM
#21 Wisconsin at Rutgers 3:30 PM
#13 Auburn at #14 Texas A&M 3:30 PM
Colorado State at Wyoming 3:30 PM
#11 Oklahoma State at West Virginia 3:30 PM
Tulsa at #6 Cincinnati 3:30 PM
#12 Baylor at TCU 3:30 PM
Navy at #10 Notre Dame 3:30 PM
#19 NC State at Florida State 4:00 PM
Tulane at UCF 4:00 PM
#17 Mississippi State at Arkansas 4:00 PM

Now this gets…better.  Still not great though with only one game involving two ranked teams.  But there’s also EIGHT other games involving a ranked team.  That has to be a record I’m sure.  Saying that, you have to be careful with the assertion that having a ranked team involved makes the game good.  Like, Tulsa-Cincy and Wisconsin-Rutgers probably will not be any good.  MSU-Arkansas should be but that’s only because the Bulldogs being ranked #17 is some kind of joke…I think.  Oh and Cincinnati will be scoreboard watching for sure.  They have to blow Tulsa out of the water and then hope Notre Dame does the same to Navy.  It’s the only way for them to potentially move up to #5 in the next rankings (unless something drastic happens).

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
#22 Iowa at Northwestern 7:00 PM
Boise State at #23 Fresno State 7:00 PM
LSU at #2 Alabama 7:00 PM
Tennessee at #18 Kentucky 7:00 PM
#4 Oregon at Washington 7:30 PM
Clemson at Louisville 7:30 PM
Houston at USF 7:30 PM
Indiana at #7 Michigan 7:30 PM
Florida at South Carolina 7:30 PM

At the start of the year, you could have pointed to a few games here as potentially massive games in the grand scheme of things.  Now, not so much.  Indiana is not nearly as good as many thought they would be.  Same goes for Washington, LSU, Boise State, Clemson and Louisville.  Let’s throw Florida in there but I think it doesn’t matter since South Carolina is really not that good.  So we will call it a comprehensive primetime slate but not an overly amazing one.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
UTSA at UTEP 10:15 PM
USC at Arizona State 10:30 PM

We were so close to College Gameday going to El Paso this weekend.  I mean I’m not a huge College Gameday watcher and I usually only watch the picks every week but still, that would have been cool to have it there for the first time.  Instead they are heading to Cincinnati where I’m sure they will treat the ESPN reporters with kindness after what we saw last night.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Auburn at Texas A&M (3:30, CBS) – Alright so this week does not have a marquee game of the week, that is for sure.  Nothing against the Tigers or Aggies but it doesn’t even contain a Top 10 team.  Saying that, it’s the only game this week with two ranked teams playing each other so it pretty much goes here by default.  The winner here is on the inside track for a New Year’s Six spot as a CFP spot is probably completely out of sight.  That is unless Bama falls again against either these very same Tigers.  Or the Razorbacks.  Or the Tigers of the LSU variety.  Or New Mexico State….you know what, no that won’t happen.

Michigan State at Purdue (3:30, ABC) – I will say that the afternoon does have the best schedule of the day so at least there’s that.  While many would not think much of this game, this could be a serious trip-up game for the Spartans.  On the road, against a fairly good Boilermaker team, with Ohio State to look ahead to in two weeks.  Don’t be surprised if this is a close game.  Now watch Sparty be up by like 31 at halftime.

Wake Forest at North Carolina (Noon, ABC) – The ACC hasn’t made this list too much this year.  And for good reason since their top team, Clemson, has been average.  Enter the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.  They are 8-0 and ranked #9 in the first CFP Poll.  And they are a 2.5-point underdog going to Chapel Hill.  The disrespect!  They could make a huge statement by winning this game over the Heels as they have NC State the following week, at home, in arguably the biggest game in the ACC Atlantic this season.  Imagine saying that at the start of the year.  Many would think you were smoking crack.

Oregon at Washington (7:30, ABC) – Oregon is at #4.  I don’t know about that ranking but then again, it’s 13 (possibly drunk) people who are or have been prominent in college football setting these rankings.  This all means that the Pac-12 is somehow already back in the game when just a few weeks ago, everyone wrote the conference off after the Ducks’ loss to Stanford.  Oregon has to continue to win, and possibly beat some teams pretty badly, to stay in the Top 4 though.  Man, ABC lucked out this week with their game selection, despite the fact it’s really just an average week, on paper.

Mississippi State at Arkansas (4:00, specialty pack) – To be honest, it’s not like there are a lot of great choices for this spot.  I could put like 6 different games here and could argue for any of them.  I think this will be the closest and the toughest to predict so that’s why it gets the final spot on the list.  The Bulldogs are somehow #17 and play an Arkansas team who could have been in the Top 25.  The Hogs are favoured by 5 so at least Vegas kind of understands.  A win would definitely but Arkansas in the Top 25 and a loss would probably push Mississippi State right out of the Top 25 as both teams try to keep their slim New Year’s Six hopes alive.

Honourable mention: Missouri at Georgia (Noon, TSN2); Liberty at Ole Miss (Noon, specialty pack); LSU at Alabama (7:00, specialty pack).

Wanna bet?

How about my Houston over SMU pick?  Or Auburn over Ole Miss?  Didn’t do too badly if I do say so myself (don’t look at the Michigan or Buffalo picks).  Let’s not think about the past but forge on with new picks for the future.  Let’s begin!

Ole Miss over Liberty

North Carolina over Wake Forest (massive upset)

Michigan State over Purdue (but it will be close)

Georgia over Missouri

Alabama over LSU

Arkansas over Mississippi State

Texas A&M over Auburn

Washington over Oregon (another massive upset)

Western Michigan over Central Michigan

UAB over Louisiana Tech

TCU over Baylor (yet another big upset)

Yes I truly believe that this may be a huge shakeup weekend in college football.  Which is saying something considering what the 2021 season has already brought us.  I hope I didn’t jinx things and all the ranked teams win now.  Because that would suck and I would have to take some of the blame.

I have been on Twitter again but am doing a bit less tweeting these days.  Not just because of the issues I’ve stated earlier this year but just general fatigue.  I’ve always said I usually enjoy interacting with others on the platform but I have to take small breaks or otherwise I’ll just collapse in front of my laptop.  Not saying I don’t get in viewing for most of those 14+ hours but hey, you need bathroom breaks, breaks for food and drink, breaks to even lift weights or go on the treadmill for a bit.  Something to break up the day.  I’m the same on NFL Sunday.  I guess I’m just getting old.   Enjoy the games everyone!

Well this is an interesting wrinkle – Week 5 College Football TV Schedule

Really, the early part of this week really had nothing going on in the college football world.  Then D’Eriq King happened and a bomb had been dropped.  King has decided to redshirt this season and will return as a senior for Houston next season.  He has since been joined by receiver Keith Corbin.  This is definitely a new wrinkle that hadn’t been seen before in college football and they can thank the new four-game redshirt rule.  King and Corbin are saying they will be back with the Cougars next season which has to be a relief to Dana Holgorsen.  But now there is a rumour that it may have been Holgorsen who nudged these two in that direction because the Cougs will be much better in 2020 and could make a run at a New Year’s Six spot.  If that is the case, that’s huge news.  The college football world is evolving and some are not very pleased with it but you better get on this train since it is speeding ahead at top speed with no chance of slowing down (except for perhaps a stop when they start getting into paying the players).

So let’s end the redshirting conversation for now (although it makes me want to play NCAA Football 14).  Time to get down to the task at hand which is getting you the college football schedule TV information for Week 5.  This feels much easier this season although I honestly have less insight into the specialty packs since I don’t actually have one anymore.

Thursday

US Canada
Delaware State at North Carolina A&T 7:30 PM
Navy at Memphis 8:00 PM

Navy is improved.  And Memphis is good.  This has the look of a potential Thursday night upset.  Which would suck for my preseason predictions but I do love me some college football chaos.

Friday

US Canada
Duke at Virginia Tech 7:00 PM
San Jose State at Air Force 8:00 PM
#12 Penn State at Maryland 8:00 PM
Arizona State at #15 California 10:30 PM

Good that we have FloSports now since PSU-UMD could be interesting.  Arizona State can almost completely ruin the Pac-12’s collective season with a win.  The other two games are technically games so I will watch.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Northwestern at #8 Wisconsin Noon
Holy Cross at Syracuse Noon
Rutgers at #20 Michigan Noon
Central Michigan at Western Michigan Noon
Arkansas vs. #23 Texas A&M (in Arlington) Noon
Middle Tennessee at #14 Iowa Noon
Buffalo at Miami-OH Noon
Texas Tech at #6 Oklahoma Noon
Kansas at TCU Noon
Northern Illinois at Vanderbilt Noon
Delaware at Pittsburgh 12:30 PM

As per usual, the early games are interesting even if they are lacking some star power.  Northwestern-Wisky will be, arguably, the biggest game of the early slate but many will be interested in TTU-OU.  We shall see if the Red Raiders can put up at least 60 points to counter the fact that their defense also might give up 60 to the Sooners.  A note here about the NU-Wisky game: It will start appearing on TSN4 at 1:00 after Raptors Media Day concludes.

UPDATE #2: Delaware-Pitt not showing on the specialty pack.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#1 Clemson at North Carolina 3:30 PM
Wake Forest at Boston College 3:30 PM
Indiana at #25 Michigan State 3:30 PM
Ole Miss at #2 Alabama 3:30 PM
Georgia Tech at Temple 3:30 PM
Iowa State at Baylor 3:30 PM sp logo
Minnesota at Purdue 3:30 PM sp logo
#21 USC at #17 Washington 3:30 PM
#18 Virginia at #10 Notre Dame 3:30 PM
Florida Atlantic at Charlotte 3:30 PM
SMU at USF 4:00 PM
Towson at #9 Florida 4:00 PM

ESPNU at 4.  Some people complain about this but it’s because they don’t have a late night game and now you know…unless Hawaii gets a game on ESPNU then it would start at 11 and we (meaning I) would be up even later than we (I) normally am.

Biggest game in this timeslot is Irish-Cavs.  Followed closesly by USC-Washington.  After that it is populated with games between a ranked team and a not-so-good team or two not-so-good teams playing each other.  Take Clemson for example.  Number one team in the land!  Against a still not that good North Carolina team.  Ugh.  Oh well.  Hopefully one of these games will end up like UCLA-Washington State from last weekend.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Mississippi State at #7 Auburn 7:00 PM
UConn at #22 UCF 7:00 PM
#5 Ohio State at Nebraska 7:30 PM
NC State at Florida State 7:30 PM
Colorado State at Utah State 7:30 PM
Kentucky at South Carolina 7:30 PM
UNLV at Wyoming 8:00 PM

Hmmm so the primetime slate is a step back from the afternoon slate.  Not saying there aren’t some good games here but it doesn’t match what happens early in the day.  MSU-Auburn will be the game of the night and should get most of the eyeballs.  Saying that, Nebraska keeping their game closer than 50 with tOSU would be a nice surprise.

UPDATE #3: Super-important thing I forgot…it’s time for Civil ConFLiCT!

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Washington State at #19 Utah 10:00 PM
UCLA at Arizona 10:30 PM
Hawaii at Nevada 10:30 PM

Pac-12 After Dark, Late Night Mountain West, and some more Pac-12 After Dark.  The best game is probably Wazzu-Utes but remember…Chip Kelly’s University of California at Los Angeles football Bruins play in this timeslot as well.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Virginia at Notre Dame (3:30, NBC) – I believe this is an easy choice for the Game of the Week and I can’t understand why people would disagree.  I have Notre Dame winning this one (as you will see in the next section).  Either way, the winner still has a shot at the College Football Playoff and a win by the Hoos has to make them the favourite to win the ACC The-One-That-Clemson-Is-Not-In Division.

USC at Washington (3:30, FOX) – Looks like I will be flipping back and forth between this big game and the UVA-ND game.  It’s a good problem to have.  Anyway, both teams have looked shaky at times.  USC looked terrible and everyone wondered if Clay Helton would be fired.  Then the Trojans woke up and played well and Clay Helton’s job was saved.  Washington lost to Cal by 1 in a game that Cal really did dominate.  Here’s where we find out which team is for real…or as real as a team can get considering it’s still late September.

Mississippi State at Auburn (7:00, specialty pack) – Who thought Auburn would be this good at this point of the season with a freshman quarterback?  Now put down your hands you filthy liars.  None of us thought this.  The Gus Bus is rolling along better than anyone figured it would be.  Could they actually have a chance to dethrone Alabama?  Let’s not get ahead of ourselves since the Bulldogs are a decent team and a win here makes it LSU or bust for a Saban regular season loss.

Ohio State at Nebraska (7:30, ABC) – Are we falling off a cliff here from the first three games?  Maybe but who knows.  Nebraska isn’t living up to the preseason hype.  But they are still 3-1 and right in the thick of the Big Ten West race (although it’s early).  So far, the Ryan Day Experience has gone well.  This almost feels more important for the Buckeyes than the Huskers since Day really can’t lose more than one game during the regular season since the comparisons between him and Urban will come up and he might not like what he hears.

Washington State at Utah (10:00, FloSports) – I think this might be the first game on this list on FS1 that can be seen in Canada.  Interesting.  I am kind of surprised ESPN didn’t get this game and instead got UCLA-Arizona.  I still think Utah can do some damage the rest of the way.  Same with Washington State and plus, Mike Leach is hilarious.  Let’s be honest: ESPN would splooge their pants if Wazzu got to the New Year’s Six.

Honourable mention: Northwestern at Wisconsin (Noon, ABC/TSN1/TSN4); Arizona State at California (Friday, 10:30, specialty pack); Kansas State at Oklahoma State (7:00, ESPN+…no seriously)

Some gambling fun and games

My God my picks were fucking horrific last week.  What the hell was I thinking?  You know what, I don’t care.  I am just going to delude myself into saying that was an aberration and not the norm.  Will these picks be better?  I will give a very tentative yes.

Mississippi State over Auburn (yep starting out with an upset…I guess I don’t learn my lesson)

California over Arizona State

USC over Washington

Utah over Washington State

Notre Dame over Virginia

Ohio State over Nebraska

Wisconsin over Northwestern

Oklahoma State over Kansas State

Penn State over Maryland

Oklahoma over Texas Tech

Michigan State over Indiana

Hey is the specialty pack have its guide up yet?  Of course not!  OK I know tonight and tomorrow night are up.  But to be honest with TSN showing barely any college football at this juncture it should be pretty easy to figure the specialty pack schedule out.  Again, it’s a mess and the cable companies have no reason to step up their game because who gives a shit about college football fans, right?  What a bunch of assholes.

UPDATE: The specialty pack guide is fully up.

Thursday Night Football will be on FOX as well as the NFL Network tonight.  This means we will get at least four times where Joe Buck has to read promos for WWE Smackdown.  Oh I can’t wait.  I’m sure Buck and/or Aikman will say something sarcastically about it at some point.  It has to happen even if its just for our entertainment.  The game itself?  Big.  Eagles-Packers.  Packers having a great start and the Lafleur-Rodgers coach-playermance going along just swimmingly.  As for the Eagles…yikes.  Lose this and they are 1-3.  Not a good start at all and panic may be setting in in the City of Brotherly Love.

I should be on the Twitter machine at some point this Saturday so follow along.  Or don’t.  Really doesn’t matter to me.  Enjoy the games everyone!

That’s the Notre Dame I remember – Week 8 College Football Recap

lou_holtz_300

Well, if you honestly remember this guy coaching the Irish.  Other than 2012, which seems like an anomaly now, we haven’t seen a true national title contending Fighting Irish team since Lou Holtz’s teams of the early 90s.  I don’t count one-offs from Charlie Weis or Tyrone Willingham or anything Bob Davie did.  So it did feel weird to see a really good Notre Dame team that you can honestly say, yes, this team has a shot.  A lot has to go their way and their schedule the rest of the way is still brutal but there is no way, no how that an 11-1 Notre Dame team is left out of the College Football Playoff.  And that is exactly what none of the conferences want.  Because then there would only be three spots remaining among five conferences.  And remember, the conferences are all about money, ur, I mean, no they’re all about the football right?  And the students?  That’s why we’ve had crazy realignment correct?  And no NCAA Football video game?

The rest of the recap

  • The other half of the equation above is USC. And boy have we figured out what the Trojans are not: and that’s national championship contenders.  What else we figured out?  That Sam Darnold is probably not a Heisman contender.  I mean a lot can happen the rest of the way but it would take a lot for him to garner some votes.  All this also means my pick for the national champion is gone.  Thanks a bunch guys.
  • Penn State mopped the floor with Michigan, completing the double shot of games that weren’t even close in primetime. It’s not a huge deal because there were some great games earlier in the day and plus Game 7 of the ALCS was on at the same time so they had some competition for viewers.  Either way, Penn State and Saquon Barkley look like the real deal.  The Wolverines, not so much, although we kind of had an idea this would happen after their opening matchup against Florida.
  • Is Florida State going bowling this season? I honestly can’t see a way they could.  With them having to drop their game against ULM off the schedule due to the hurricane (which would have been a likely victory), it means they have to go 6-5 to make a bowl game.  At 2-4, that means winning four of their last five.  The only sure win is Delaware State.  I can’t see them winning three out of four from Boston College, Syracuse, Clemson and Florida.  So we could be witnessing history here.  History of the wrong kind.
  • Tennessee is another team that is up against it. Butch Jones is as good as gone.  If the Vols keep him it would be them admitting that 2018 is another lost year.  As for a bowl game, they have a much better chance than FSU of making it so I think they will make a bowl game but they may want to figure out travel plans to places like Memphis, Shreveport or Birmingham rather than fun Florida locales.
  • Alabama won again. Ho hum.  Thankfully for them LSU is ranked or otherwise they would have to go all the way to the Iron Bowl to get a potentially ranked team which leaves them with a much thinner margin of error in case of an upset loss.
  • Remember last season when Georgia Southern’s AD stated that Tyson Summers would be back for another season despite the fact Summers had only just completed his first season? The writing was on the wall then and now, after the Eagles have gone to basically their worst start in a generation, Summers has been shitcanned.  No surprise.  The surprise is how pathetically bad Georgia Southern is two years after being a Sun Belt force.
  • Let’s go back to the primetime schedule. People bemoaned the fact that Kansas would be on in primetime on FOX to play TCU.  In the end I think it was a shrewd move by FOX as they got the best big game of the afternoon and an amazing finish between Oklahoma and Kansas State up against inferior games.  I think it would have been somewhat lost in the shuffle in primetime.  Saying all that, a national audience got to see how truly bad Kansas was.  Their 21 yards for the entire game is the worst total in the FBS in two decades.  They are why promotion-relegation would be welcomed by a ton of fans in college football.
  • Is the Pac-12 out? They are as close to it as you can be this early in the season.  One of Washington or Washington State now has to run the table and win the Pac-12 Championship or there is no chance the conference gets a seat at the adult table come CFP time.  So much hope for this conference dashed in an eight-day span.
  • UCF is really going to make it tough for their in-state rivals, USF, to run away with the Group of Five spot. The War on I-4 between these two teams on American Thanksgiving weekend is going to be huge.  It’s almost a definite ABC game if both teams get there undefeated.  Could it go to primetime?  There’s a distinct possibility despite the fact it’s a loaded schedule that week.

Alright another fun weekend in the books.  On to the Bossman Top 25.  Not a whole lot has changed at the top with quite a few teams idle this past weekend:

#1 Alabama
#2 Penn State
#3 TCU
#4 Georgia
#5 Wisconsin
#6 Miami
#7 Ohio State
#8 Oklahoma State
#9 Notre Dame
#10 Clemson
#11 Oklahoma
#12 Virginia Tech
#13 Washington
#14 USF
#15 Washington State
#16 UCF
#17 NC State
#18 Auburn
#19 Michigan State
#20 USC
#21 LSU
#22 Stanford
#23 Iowa State
#24 Michigan
#25 West Virginia

I have moved Penn State and TCU past Georgia since in college football it really is “what have you done for me lately” when it comes to the polls (and mine is no different).  It all smooths out in the end really.  I have Notre Dame firmly in the Top 10 and USC still at #20 since that might end up being considered a good loss for them if Notre Dame runs the table.  Iowa State and West Virginia from the suddenly quite good Big XII move into the Top 25.  So now half the conference is in the rankings (OU, OSU, TCU, ISU, WVU) with Texas, Texas Tech, and Kansas State still being decent middle-of-the-road teams.  God help the broadcast crew that gets dealt Baylor-Kansas later this season.

Another NFL recap tomorrow (probably) although I am honestly trying to determine whether I scrap early season NFL recaps/rants (unless it is warranted) and focus on later on in the season when there are playoff implications and the football starts getting better because more games actually mean something.  Hoping to do a way-too-early bowl prediction post this week as well.  Enjoy your week everyone!

It is now time for the dog’s breakfast portion of our show…

Hey, hey! (I say that in my head in Krusty The Clown’s voice).  This will be the second year in a row I take a (probably totally inaccurate) stab at the schedules for the SEC Network, Big Ten Network, ACC Network, Notre Dame on NBC, and even the TSN schedules for this college football season.  Remember, Bell subscribers (which I am one of) will not get BTN this season.  But hey, Rogers customers get the SEC Network games now!  Good for them (and good for Rogers for coming to their senses on something that made no sense to begin with).  And for the first time ever, I will include the CBS Sports Network schedule as well.  I know, I know…you are so excited to hear that (I wanted the “Dripping Sarcasm” font for this part but couldn’t find it).  Alright, here we go with Round 1!

sec_network_logo

As I mentioned above, Rogers subscribers (including other smaller telcos that I tend to forget) now get the games from the SEC Network.  Good stuff.  Unfortunately you juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust missed hearing Big Game Brent doing less-than-big games on the Ocho (You are looking live at…wait, Sam Houston State?  Good lord.  Hey Joe, find the ten hottest girls in the crowd so I can ogle them throughout the game alright?).  So here we go with the projected schedule since I think not a single game has been confirmed yet:

OK I lied.  As of right now, one game is confirmed.  The first three weeks are confirmed in terms of the games that will appear on the SEC Network (and thus, the specialty pack up here).  The times are all TBA.  And as per usual, September is kind of garbage and then it picks up significantly starting in October with more conference play.

big_ten_color_logo

Just like last year, here is my opportunity to ask the stupid CRTC to just offer a package that includes all college football games from as many channels as possible and charge for that.  I would gladly pay more than what I am paying now for the U.S. College Sports Package.  But alas, they won’t because we don’t get nice things up here (except the health care system which is pretty damn sweet I must say).

Alright so here is the BTN schedule for this season which may or may not be a bit lighter due to the B1G signing up with FOX.  Rogers/Eastlink and I assume Shaw customers get this channel.  Bell subscribers do not.  Oh well.  The (alternate) means this will appear on the specialty pack for people who get BTN.

August 31st Buffalo at Minnesota (confirmed) 7:00 PM

November 25th Indiana at Purdue Noon
November 25th Michigan State at Rutgers 3:30 PM

Just like the SEC Network, the Big Ten Network mandates that every team appear at least once during a season.  And also just like the SEC Network the bottom two or three teams appear much more often than the top two or three teams.  Makes sense, right?  I mean other than Wisconsin at Indiana (at this point), there aren’t any fairly huge games on this network although I think that will change over the course of the season.  Besides, do you really want Rutgers on a big-time network more than once or twice this season?

ACC-Network-Stacked_Color-LB

This used to be easy.  WSBK out of Boston was pretty much everyone’s go-to for the ACC Network game of the week.  Now WNLO out of Buffalo is in the mix as well and we saw this come up when there were two ACC Network games at the same time.  This will actually work out so much better when the true ACC Network begins in 2019 (as long as it follows the format of the SEC Network up here in the Great White North).  We will just get the games throughout the day on the specialty pack and everyone will be happy (who actually orders the specialty pack).

And this year we have a slight wrinkle early on which may rear its head later on in the season as well (although for now I don’t foresee it).  This actually may make it more PVR-friendly to be honest with you.  Schedule followed by a couple thoughts:

September 2nd California at North Carolina  (confirmed) 12:30 PM
September 9th ULM at Florida State (confirmed) 7:00 PM
September 16th Furman at NC State (confirmed) 12:30 PM
September 23rd Boston College at Clemson 12:30 PM
September 30th Rice at Pittsburgh 12:30 PM
October 7th Pittsburgh at Syracuse 12:30 PM
October 14th Virginia at North Carolina 12:30 PM
October 21st Wake Forest at Georgia Tech 12:30 PM
October 28th Louisville at Wake Forest 12:30 PM
November 4th Syracuse at Florida State 12:30 PM
November 4th Georgia Tech at Virginia 12:30 PM
November 11th Virginia at Louisville 12:30 PM
November 18th Syracuse at Louisville 12:30 PM
November 25th Duke at Wake Forest 12:30 PM

Primetime ACC Network game.  PRIMETIME ACC NETWORK GAME!  Normally this kind of game would go to the regional FOX network and we might get it on the specialty pack in poverty Standard Definition.  Instead, this game goes to primetime which is nice and I think it’s almost a test run for primetime games on the brand-new ACC Network in a couple seasons.  My guess is that they will go to an SEC Network type schedule then: three games a week (on average).  Does this mean no games on ESPNEWS starting then?  Wouldn’t surprise me since I can’t see them finding value in more Group of Five games on the family of networks.

ND_on_NBC_logo

I have this feeling one day NBC will add something on weeks when Notre Dame doesn’t play at home or at a neutral site.  Notre Dame could still have exclusivity on days they are on NBC but otherwise NBC could expand their portfolio (especially now when everything in the world of college football broadcasting seems to be in flux).  Here’s the FULLY CONFIRMED ND on NBC schedule for this season:

September 2nd Temple at Notre Dame 3:30 PM
September 9th Georgia at Notre Dame 7:30 PM
October 21st USC at Notre Dame 7:30 PM
October 28th NC State at Notre Dame 3:30 PM
November 4th Wake Forest at Notre Dame 3:30 PM
November 18th Navy at Notre Dame 3:30 PM

It seems like the norm that two primetime games occur every year for Notre Dame on NBC.  I am positive I saw somewhere that it is supposed to be three in a two-year span but I am guessing the two-year spans are not revolving in this case.  Also, this season we go back to having a game on NBC Sports Network which we, of course, do not receive.  Notre Dame hosts Miami-OH so it’s not like we are missing much there.  Plus it’s at the odd time of 5PM.  Weird.

Yes the CBS Sports Network schedule for the first time this season!  And now that I pay less for the channel itself (like $2/month) it makes sense rather than the $7/month I started paying before (which I hated).  So if you love AAC and MWC football (with a sprinkling of MACtion) this is the channel for you.  It really has become the de facto Group of Five major network with the sheer amount of games they have.  So here we go (this will be a looooooong list):

August 26th Oregon State at Colorado State (confirmed) 2:30 PM
August 26th USF at San Jose State (confirmed) 7:30 PM

What did I tell you?  Such a huge schedule.  It’s ESPN-esque!  Anyway, you will see gratuitous AAC and Mountain West fare here along with a sprinkling of MAC and Conference USA with NO SUN BELT ANYWHERE.  Poor Sun Belt.  Also nice is that the majority of the schedule is confirmed.  Much different than the SEC Network pile o’ games.

TSN_LOGO4

Speaking of long schedules, let me take a crack at the potential TSN schedule.  I know I will be wrong.  Almost guaranteed.  But I will try.  That’s what’s important.  Right?

None of the games are confirmed yet (although some are confirmed on American networks) and none will be until mid-August when maybe the first week will be set up.  Not as bad as the specialty packs (which still amazes me…it can’t be that difficult to do schedules for those) but still bad.  So here we go and let’s get on with the carnage!

Good lord that’s a long list.  That’s not a bad thing and I am not complaining.  I will say that many of these will be slightly incorrect where I chose the wrong TSN network or something like that.  I only have one SEC Network and one ESPNU game being broadcast by TSN and it wouldn’t surprise me if that was one too many for both.

Finally done.  This took way too long to do but it’s getting me organized and giving you a glimpse of what you may be looking at this late Summer, Fall, and very early Winter.  We are now exactly 40 days away from the start of the college football season and I am way behind on my posts.  Coming up it’s prediction posts and then some other tidbits about the season.  It’s right around the corner.  Finally!

Don’t you know the first law of physics? Anything that’s fun costs at least eight dollars. – Week 4 College Football TV Schedule

Or in the case of the U.S. College Sports Package, $100.  Or in the case of the Rogers Super Sports Pack, $35.95/month.  I mean we’re not talking about thousands of dollars but it isn’t nothing.  So saying that, I can’t understand how, on Thursday morning, that there isn’t a semblance of a guide up for either specialty pack.  Hell, Bell doesn’t even have information on the games tomorrow night.  Nothing.  NOTHING!!!!   STUPID!!!  (Update: Bell has put some information up but it’s not complete yet.  Still….).  I thought we were past this.  I thought, through three weeks, that everything was going pretty smoothly.  It was nice to see.  I should have known it wouldn’t last.

Anyway, enough of the rant (man I rant a lot on my blog at times).  Let’s get down to business BRAH!  College football TV schedule time and boy do I need to really take a hard look at how I am going to record games this weekend.  My PVR is going to hate me even more.  I’m sure one day it will conspire with the remote control and run away leaving me with nothing.  Anyway…

UPDATE: LSU-Auburn, Cal-ASU, and AF-USU are all showing up for Bell.  Still haven’t seen an updated SSP guide for tomorrow yet.

UPDATE #2: Everything is coming up Milhouse….Uh, I mean everything is up on the guide!

Thursday

ROGERS FIBE SAT
#5 Clemson at Georgia Tech 7:30 PM TSN2 X X X

Tonight there is one single, solitary game.  But it could be a big one.  And we can officially consider it a trap game.  Clemson is barreling head long into a showdown with Louisville in Week 5.  They do have to get past the option offense and stingy defense of Georgia Tech.  And remember what they did last year to Florida State.  The Tigers better be careful.

Friday

ROGERS FIBE SAT
Wyoming at Eastern Michigan 7:30 PM CBSSN X X
TCU at SMU 8:00 PM SP X X X

Two games here.  One at the so-called Factory in Ypslianti.  If they get more than 6,000 for that game I would be shocked.  The other is the Battle for the Iron Skillet.  It will be anything but a battle I am assuming.  TCU should mop the floor with the Mustangs even though they are on the road.

Saturday Early

ROGERS FIBE SAT
#13 Florida State at USF 12:00 PM ABC X X X
#11 Wisconsin at #8 Michigan State 12:00 PM BTN X
#12 Georgia at #23 Ole Miss 12:00 PM TSN3 X X X
Iowa at Rutgers 12:00 PM TSN2 X X X
Colorado State at Minnesota 12:00 PM SP X X X
Kent State at #1 Alabama 12:00 PM TSN4/TSN5 X X X
East Carolina at Virginia Tech 12:30 PM WSBK/SP X X X
Syracuse at UConn 1:00 PM CBSSN X X

This is when it kind of starts to break down when it comes to the guide.  Rogers isn’t showing Colorado State-Minnesota yet.  I assume by tonight they will though.  Bell just put this up on the guide (along with most of the other ESPN network games) this morning.  The highlight here is, amazingly enough, on BTN.  How the hell did they get Wisconsin-Michigan State?  The prevailing theory is that because each school has to be on BTN at least twice with one of those games being a conference game, that ESPN allowed BTN to leap-frog them for this game, meaning Wisky doesn’t have to appear on BTN at all the rest of the season (they played Georgia State last week on BTN and almost lost).  If the Badgers win this, then ESPN looks like a genius so there is some thought that they put into this.  Still sucks that I don’t get this game thanks to the pissing match between Rogers and Bell.

Saturday Afternoon

ROGERS FIBE SAT
Penn State at #4 Michigan 3:30 PM ABC X X X
Wake Forest at Indiana 3:30 PM BTN X
#19 Florida at #14 Tennessee 3:30 PM CBS X X X
BYU vs. West Virginia (in Landover) 3:30 PM SP X X X
Pittsburgh at North Carolina 3:30 PM SP X X X
Duke at Notre Dame 3:30 PM NBC X X X
Delaware State at Missouri 4:00 PM SP X X
Vanderbilt at Western Kentucky 4:30 PM CBSSN X X
#18 LSU at Auburn 6:00 PM SP X X X

Florida-Tennessee and LSU-Auburn are the two games that highlight this part of the day.  Two games showing up on Bell but not Rogers yet (denoted by an asterisk (*)).  I don’t see LSU-Auburn on any guide yet though.  I find this odd.  I mean the start time itself is odd but what can you do.  As I have said before (numerous times so bear with me), staggered start times are awesome…when I can sit down all day and just watch and flip channels at my leisure.  When I have to PVR things, holy shit does it become a gongshow.  But I get creative.  Don’t you worry.  I didn’t think you were worried to be honest.  OK I’ll shut up now.

Saturday Primetime

ROGERS FIBE SAT
UCF at FIU 7:00 PM beIn Sports X X X
#6 Houston at Texas State 7:00 PM SP X X X
#20 Nebraska at Northwestern 7:30 PM BTN X
Oklahoma State at #16 Baylor 7:30 PM FOX X X X
South Carolina at Kentucky 7:30 PM SP X X
#7 Stanford at UCLA 8:00 PM ABC X X X
#3 Louisville at Marshall 8:00 PM CBSSN X X
#17 Arkansas vs. #10 Texas A&M (in Arlington) 9:00 PM SP X X X

A bunch of good-but-not-great games dots the primetime landscape.  Stanford-UCLA, OSU-Baylor, and Arkansas-TAMU are all good games.  But compared to what we saw in Weeks 1 and 3, they aren’t exactly groundbreaking.  Just as a reminder, I rated this week 7th out of 13 for the college football year.  So smack dab in the middle.  So far I have lucked out with the Saturdays I can focus on college football and the ones I can’t.  This will not continue throughout the year and I know that.  Anyway, Houston-TSU and Arkansas-TAMU (at this point) don’t appear on the Rogers guides.  Yeah…

Saturday Late Night

ROGERS FIBE SAT
California at Arizona State 10:00 PM SP X X X
Air Force at Utah State 10:15 PM SP X X X

Neither of these games are appearing anywhere.  I don’t know if it’s a glitch in the Bell schedule or what because they show some games but not others.  I will keep updating this situation as games start to appear.  I also need this info for my crafty recording techniques.  I feel so smart…with this.  Some other things, not so much.

HEY, HEY!  It’s the games of the week!

#11 Wisconsin at #8 Michigan State (Noon, BTN) – I have outlined above how this probably occurred.  Rogers subscribers, feel lucky (for once) since Bell subscribers don’t get this game.  Anyway, a big game here with huge implications.  Michigan State loses and there goes my last CFP pick (by Week 4…man I suck).  Wisky loses and they will have a tough time getting back to the top of the Big Ten West.  Should be good…for those that can watch it.

#17 Arkansas vs. #10 Texas A&M (in Arlington) (9:00, specialty pack) – To be honest I still don’t think of either the Razorbacks or the Aggies as Top 20 teams.  Not being a dick, I just think it has more to do with the volatility of the teams that have been in the Top 20 rather than these two teams themselves.  Well, one is going to drop in the rankings that is for sure.  And also, this is approximately the 27th of 84 neutral-site games held at JerryWorld this season so the home advantage won’t be in play….bahahahahaha, who am I kidding, it will be 75% Aggie fans at least.

#12 Georgia at #23 Ole Miss (Noon, TSN3) – On the other end of the spectrum, I figured both these teams might even be Top 10 by this point.  Problem is the Rebels vomited away two huge leads and don’t look like a contender for anything other than the Liberty Bowl berth and UGA looked positively pedestrian last week against Mizzou.

#5 Clemson at Georgia Tech (Thursday, 7:30, TSN2) – TRAP GAME!!!!! (as I mentioned above)

Penn State at #4 Michigan (3:30, ABC) – Speaking of trap games, don’t sleep on the Nittany Lions in this one.  They’ve been a tough out even when they are in down years and this year will be no exception since PSU doesn’t exactly look like world-beaters these days.  The Fighting Harbuaghs should get through this one but they have to continue to look impressive to keep in the Top 5 (and, you know, keep winning games).

#18 LSU at Auburn (6:00, specialty pack) – This is in this odd timeslot thanks to the World Cup of Hockey.  Funny, this tournament has taken a back seat to Blue Jays highlights and NFL highlights so far.  So yeah, I wouldn’t talk about the “importance” of this tournament since it is clearly not important enough.  Anyway, the Gus Bus is going to get another flat tire in this one if they can’t pull out what might essentially be a miracle.

Gambling and Stuff…and Things

OK no mostly gambling.  Here are a few picks I would have made if I actually put money down on these games:

Clemson over Georgia Tech

Michigan State over Wisconsin

Ole Miss over Georgia

Michigan over Penn State

Florida over Tennessee

LSU over Auburn

Baylor over Oklahoma State

Stanford over UCLA

Texas A&M over Arkansas

Northwestern over Nebraska (upset of the week)

There you go.  Now you can plan your Saturday.  Tomorrow I will have the NFL schedule up.  Remember, tonight it’s Houston and New England in what would be a pretty huge game except it isn’t Tom Brady and not even Jimmy Garoppolo…it’s Jacoby Brissett.  Should be interesting at least.  Enjoy the games everyone!

And here come the pretzels!

I mean the rest of the TV schedules.  For the very first time I am going to do schedules for the SEC Network (for Bell subscribers), the Big Ten Network (for Rogers subscribers), the ACC Network (which appears on WSBK out of Boston for most of us), and even a stab at the TSN schedule (which should be way off but I digress).  I’ll also include the NBC Notre Dame schedule.  I’m not putting in CBS Sports Network or any games on MyTV from ASN.  I don’t think I would even come close with those schedules.

sec_network_logo

Let’s begin with our friends (and I use that term loosely) at the SEC Network.  A reminder that almost all SEC Network games are on the specialty pack for Bell customers (and a few others).  In the past, a game or two has somehow crept its way onto one of the TSN networks.  I don’t foresee that happening this season but you never know.  So here is your SEC Network schedule (from what I see so far) (*denotes game and time has been set):

The first three weeks are littered with alternate games and crappy non-conference schedules.  It makes you wonder why you wanted these games in the first place.  Then it picks up big time and other than that one Saturday in November (that we should never speak of), it’s a pretty good schedule the rest of the way.

big_ten_color_logo

You know, I wish we could just get all the FBS games we wanted and be able to pay a premium for it.  Right now it’s $100 for the U.S. College Sports Package through Bell for the year.  I would easily pay $150 if not a bit more if I was assured to get, at the very least, all Power Five conference games.  But as for now we have the CRTC running the show.  One of the C’s has to stand for Communists.  Anyway…

Here’s the BTN schedule for you Rogers/Eastlink customers.  Asterisks denote games that are set.  Alternate BTN games (which would end up on the Super Sports Pack) are denoted by (alt):

November-26-16 Rutgers at Maryland 3:30 PM

All the teams will appear at least once on BTN, exactly like the SEC Network.  And also like SECN, the schools on the bottom rungs appear more often than the better schools.  For example, I have Rutgers appearing six times on BTN, whereas I have tOSU only appearing twice.  Again, a lot has to do with how good a program is this season.  Plus, it seems like BTN is showing a few more games this season (quite a bit more games with alternates) so more teams have to appear more times.

ACC-Network-Stacked_Color-LB

I don’t know if WSBK is now MyTV out of Boston or not now.  But it’s out of Boston which makes sense since Boston College is in the ACC.  It will be very interesting to see if they somehow come out with a true ACC Network (like the SEC Network or BTN), if it would change this schedule.  My guess is, from history, that it definitely would.

But for now, we have the normal 12:30 start time which is great when you are watching games live.  But when you’re not it sucks because you can never PVR it.  So here is the schedule.  You know the deal with the asterisks:

September-03-16 Liberty at Virginia Tech* 12:30 PM
September-10-16 Troy at Clemson* 12:30 PM
September-17-16 Vanderbilt at Georgia Tech* 12:30 PM
September-24-16 East Carolina at Virginia Tech 12:30 PM
October-01-16 Louisville at Clemson 12:30 PM
October-08-16 Virginia Tech at North Carolina 12:30 PM
October-15-16 Virginia Tech at Syracuse 12:30 PM
October-22-16 Syracuse at Boston College 12:30 PM
October-29-16 Army at Wake Forest 12:30 PM
November-05-16 Louisville at Boston College 12:30 PM
November-05-16 Georgia Tech at North Carolina 12:30 PM
November-12-16 Miami at Virginia 12:30 PM
November-19-16 Clemson at Wake Forest 12:30 PM
November-19-16 Florida State at Syracuse 12:30 PM
November-26-16 Kentucky at Louisville 12:30 PM

I do think there will be a couple of high quality games on the ACC Network this season, including Louisville at Clemson.  More of the conference networks are trying to get at least one or two good games a season.  Probably to justify their existence.

ND_on_NBC_logo

So basically the Notre Dame home game/neutral site schedule.  Except for the game against Navy in Jacksonville.  Here it is:

September-10-16 Nevada at Notre Dame* 3:30 PM
September-17-16 Michigan State at Notre Dame* 7:30 PM
September-24-16 Duke at Notre Dame* 3:30 PM
October-15-16 Stanford at Notre Dame* 7:30 PM
October-29-16 Miami at Notre Dame* 3:30 PM
November-12-16 Army vs. Notre Dame (in San Antonio)* 3:30 PM
November-19-16 Virginia Tech at Notre Dame* 3:30 PM

I have two primetime games in here.  Don’t know if that is allowed under the current contract or not.  Also I have put no games on NBCSN.  Who knows whether one will be moved there or not since last year’s game against Boston College at Fenway was moved there interestingly enough.

TSN_LOGO4

This is a bit of a long schedule and very much a crapshoot.  I am basing this on last year’s broadcasted games since TSN really increased their college football schedule from the previous year (all due to Rogers’ insane NHL contract).

Now with issues surrounding simsubbing (I will be honest and I say I do not know whether these are already enforced or not), many of the games already appearing on ABC may be removed from the schedule altogether or replaced with other games from the ESPN family of networks.  This could have a trickle-down effect to the specialty packs which may a) make it less valuable to have if the cost to the consumer is the same and/or b) make it so including new networks (i.e. FOX Sports One or Pac-12 Network) has to be considered by Rogers and Bell.

Alright here is the schedule.  The asterisked games are games that are already appearing on ABC.  There are no games set on the TSN networks as this is almost always done on a week-by-week basis:

September-03-16 LSU vs. Wisconsin (in Green Bay)* 3:30 PM TSN3
September-10-16 UCF at Michigan* 12:00 PM TSN4
September-15-16 Houston at Cincinnati 7:30 PM TSN3/TSN5

January-02-17 Sugar Bowl 8:30 PM TSN2
January-09-17 National Championship Game 8:30 PM TSN1/TSN3/TSN4/TSN5

I would say the majority of the Noon ABC games have been on TSN in the past, especially last season.  That could all change with new CRTC simsubbing rules.  So what I can say is this: the amount of games, including the amount of bowl games, being shown on TSN overall is probably pretty close to correct.  The actual games could be very wrong though (and probably will be).

Alright, done.  No more schedule stuff until mid-August at the earliest.  Now it’s prediction time which will take up all of the next month or so.  It’s getting close guys.  Now that Cal-Hawaii has been slated for an ESPN network, this means the start of the season is 52 days away!  I can feel it!!!!!
