1. Bring in Texas and Oklahoma. 2. Make even a pissed off Texas A&M comply. 3. ????? 4. Profit!

We are not just inching towards super conferences now.  If Texas and Oklahoma are admitted to the SEC then college football is on a bullet train to super conference land!  We may be witnessing the biggest and possibly last huge realignment spree for a while.  This is just the tip of the iceberg.  If you are happy with the potential of super conferences and these teams breaking off from the NCAA (or at the very least, FBS), you can thank Greg Sankey, the current commissioner of the SEC.  He is a guy that sees the future for what it is and plans to put the Southeastern Conference in front of it all.  This post could look entirely different starting as early as next season if he gets his way (and UT and OU gets theirs and TAMU really doesn’t get theirs at all).

How about we get right down to the predictions that Just Means More (teams) followed by Texas Barbecue Thoughts (and whatever the fuck they eat in Oklahoma):

Texas Barbecue Thoughts

  • Wait, they will eat barbecue as well in Oklahoma…slathered in Jim Ross’s BBQ sauce.
  • I’ve done this before with not-so-great results.  But I don’t learn from my mistakes so I’m doing it again.  Bama does not have an easy schedule (which is par for the course in the SEC West) and I can’t see them going unscathed.  I have them losing to Texas A&M but still winning the division.  This would mean not being #1 and you’ll have to wait to see where I have them after the conference championships in another post.  Again, don’t be pissed.  It’s not like I have them going 6-6 and heading to the Independence Bowl.
  • I have Georgia winning the East division by a healthy margin.  Again, it all comes down to the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party between the Dawgs and Gators and I have UGA winning that one and then winning the title going away.  Kentucky and Missouri will be good once again but good isn’t good enough to win the SEC East.
  • Yes, I said the Aggies would beat Bama.  Problem is they have a brutal schedule and I see them losing two other games, conceding the division to the Tide.  How dare they be in the SEC West!
  • LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn are all potential Top 25 teams (or just outside the Top 25) with Arkansas improving under Sam Pittman.  And Mike Leach will have an exciting brand of ball down in Starkville.  Damn, the SEC West is a minefield.
  • When is Tennessee going to turn it around?  Be back, as you will.  It won’t be this season and I don’t know when that will happen.  UT (the one in Knoxville) routinely falls behind most of the SEC teams when it comes to recruiting and they can’t seem to get any traction or a really good head coach (or a head coach who becomes really good) to move them up the conference ladder.  Would it surprise me to see them make a bowl game?  No but it’s not going to be exactly a New Year’s Six game or a bowl game in the state of Florida.
  • Auburn is an interesting case.  They finally shitcanned Gus Malzahn despite the fact he’s done pretty good work on the Plains since he arrived.  But it wasn’t enough even with beating Bama a few times.  Now they have Bryan Harsin, previously of Boise State, to try and push the Tigers to that next level.  The only way that happens is if Bo Nix can become the quarterback he was supposed to be and the rest of the offense follows his lead.  Otherwise I may even be generous giving them eight wins.
  • Eleven bowl teams!  And maybe even twelve if they need Tennessee for some reason.
  • Alabama-Georgia again?  Yep.  Crimson Tide winning a close one again?  Yep.  Does this put Bama in the CFP?  You’ll have to see.  But you can probably make a good guess at the answer.

We are down to four conferences left in the prediction posts.  Next up is a conference that really doesn’t know what to do although with a new commissioner hopefully they will be better…the Pac-12.

Still 33 days to go until the first college football game of the season.  Why the hell does it feel like it’s taking so long to get there?  Considering the season we came off of, I am thinking a lot of fans will be seriously pumped for this season  Have a great week everyone!

Well this certainly makes things interesting – Week 9 College Football Recap

Look I knew that Trevor Lawrence being out due to a positive COVID-19 test would be huge and would hamper Clemson’s offense a bit.  But man, I didn’t think the defense would be affected as much.  Clemson had to come back from 18 down to beat Boston College.  This does not bode well for next Saturday night’s game against Notre Dame where they will be without Lawrence again.  DJ Uiagalelei looks like the quarterback of the future but he will have to seriously step up to combat the Irish’s fairly stingy defense.  Makes thinks a lot more interesting next weekend for sure.

Alright let’s get to the final recap that doesn’t include Pac-12 After Dark or MACtion.  Things are really starting to heat up.  Let’s go!

Don’t write off Oklahoma just yet.  We knew the Sooners would have a bit of a tough road to even get to the Big XII Championship, let alone the New Year’s Six.  The losses to Kansas State and Iowa State definitely did not help.  I mean yes they didn’t lose by much and were competitive in both games.  But a loss is a loss and even in this pandemic year, two losses pretty much ruins a College Football Playoff opportunity.  As for the Red Raiders, who the Sooners destroyed, even with every team being bowl-eligible, I can’t see them being selected for one unless they win most of the rest of their games.

I think most of us thought Oklahoma State would win.  And, of course, I was one of them.  This game was all over the place but Texas was carrying things most of the way in the first half.  Problem was it didn’t lead to, well, a lead.  The Cowboys actually went up by 11 in the third.  Texas immediately started their comeback with a kickoff return for a touchdown and then a long drive in the fourth to take the lead.  The Pokes needed a field goal late in the fourth just to get to overtime.  But man, they looked awful in overtime.  Six plays that gained no yards.  Brutal.  This effectively eliminates the Big XII from the CFP picture…at Halloween.

Could Ohio State-Indiana become the pivotal Big Ten game of the season?  Don’t be surprised.  Indiana made sure that Rutgers didn’t get that Schiano magic once again (except for that eight-lateral touchdown that didn’t count that would have been one of the greatest touchdowns in college football history if it had counted).  The Buckeyes are still damn good as they showed in holding off a game Penn State team.  So this brings us to November 21st when the Buckeyes host the Hoosiers.  As of this point, this looks like the most important Big Ten game of the season by a country mile.  Are there any teams really close to these two?  You could argue Wisconsin could be but we haven’t seen much of them yet after their game against Nebraska was cancelled due to a ton of positive COVID tests within the Badgers team.  Other than that, nah.  Tom Allen should get a big raise if somehow he is able to coax a win over tOSU from his Indy squad.

Let’s talk about Atlantic Coast Conference contender, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  Brian Kelly has a damn good team in South Bend this season.  Well, the offense is good, not great, to be honest.  But the defense has been phenomenal and has mostly carried this team to a 6-0 record.  The Irish are solidly in the College Football Playoff conversation.  That will make a lot of people cringe due to their hatred of everything Notre Dame.  But really, they are two games against Clemson (probably) from being in the Final Four.  Georgia Tech is still improving…slowly.  It takes time to do what Geoff Collins is doing in Atlanta and it’s a good thing to see he is getting that time.

Yep, Cincinnati is still undefeated.  Not totally surprised but man have the Bearcats looked good this season.  Let’s be real here: the Bearcats being in the American Conference will probably make it so they are excluded from the CFP.  Saying that though, they are now #6 in the country.  If a few things happen to the teams above them then who knows?  Honestly, it’s not like the Bearcats have a tough schedule the rest of the way.  If they can mow down the opposition and look good doing it, they may not fall out of the Top 10 and may be close enough to sniff that rarified air of the College Football Playoff which would be a huge news story going into December.

Back to Big XII Upset Watch.  The other upset of the day in the Big XII came in Morgantown.  The West Virginia Mountaineers kept Kansas State from doing much of anything all day and ran away with a huge win.  This may have ruined KSU’s chances of getting to the Big XII Championship but considering the way the conference has been this year, who the fuck even knows anymore.  I am sure Drunk Uncle Dana was at his Red Bull-infused best during this one.

Well we know there will be a new champion.  Man has the bloom come off the rose quickly in Baton Rouge.  LSU got boatraced by Auburn in a game that was never close.  And it’s not like Auburn is great because they aren’t.  Bo Nix has been underwhelming this season and yet looked almost like Auburn Cam Newton in this one.  LSU’s defense couldn’t stop anything.  Again the SEC on CBS was a complete waste of time to watch.  Maybe it’s not a bad thing the contract will be going to another network in a few years.

Yes, a Mike Leach team didn’t score a point.  Yep, it looks like it took one game for the SEC to figure out the Air Raid.  Alabama toasted Mississippi State to the tune of 41-0.  And that’s with Bama only getting two touchdowns in the second half.  It feels like it was years ago when that massive win over LSU happened and it’s looking worse and worse every week…for both teams.  The Pirate is going to have to do something slightly different or it could be a long year in Starkville for the Bulldogs.

How about the crazy finish in Tulsa?  Or more like the refs robbing East Carolina?  Tulsa never led until their touchdown with 29 seconds left.  But it shouldn’t have even got to the point where the Golden Hurricane could take the lead.  It had looked like Tulsa’s T.K. Wilkerson fumbled with the Pirates recovering the ball, essentially ending the game.  Somehow the replay booth said Wilkerson recovered the ball when he hadn’t.  This allowed the drive to continue and for Tulsa to get the winning score.  My hope is that the replay official is at least suspended for that mistake since that cost ECU a victory.  Problem is, the officials almost never get punished.  And you wonder why people hate the refs.  There’s one reason why.

Is Georgia any good?  Like I honestly don’t know after this weekend’s horrible performance against Kentucky.  They won 14-3 but the Wildcats are a complete disaster on offense so it’s not like the UGA defense had a tough fight out there.  Stetson Bennett only threw 13 passes and had 2 interceptions.  A horrible day all around.  They should feel lucky to escape Lexington with a win.  With the Cocktail Party coming up, the Bulldogs have to be considered the easy underdog here (no pun intended).

Lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllet’s get ready to RUMBLE!  Oh man did you see that halftime brawl between Florida and Missouri?  Florida players were pretty upset at a non-call when Missouri defenders should have been called for roughing the quarterback.  Then Dan Mullen comes sprinting off the sideline at the officials, screaming his damn head off.  This gets some of the players involved and then the fists starting flying.  For football, it was quite the brawl.  Then, as heads into the tunnel for halftime, Mullen acts like a babyface wrestler riling up the crowd.  So fucking hilarious.  I’m not saying we need more brawls in football because we definitely don’t.  But Mullen to me is a great personality and we need more coaches and players showing personality (without getting violent of course.

Well the Tar Heels to the College Football Playoff train just crashed into a wall.  Many of us wondered if the loss to Florida State was just a speedbump on North Carolina’s season.  Well, maybe that wasn’t the case.  Virginia’s win over the Heels means UNC’s chances at the College Football Playoff, New Year’s Six…hell, the ACC Championship game are pretty much gone.  Don’t get me wrong: I still expect Mack Brown to get this team to seven or eight wins this year.  Which is a step in the right direction.  But they are obviously still a year away from truly contending.

Alright, enough recappin’.  Let’s get to the Bossman Top 25!

#1 Clemson
#2 Alabama
#3 Ohio State
#4 Notre Dame
#5 Cincinnati
#6 Georgia
#7 Florida
#8 Miami
#9 BYU
#10 Texas A&M
#11 Wisconsin
#12 Oklahoma State
#13 Oregon
#14 Coastal Carolina
#15 Marshall
#16 SMU
#17 Indiana
#18 Iowa State
#19 Oklahoma
#20 USC
#21 Michigan
#22 Auburn
#23 Louisiana
#24 North Carolina
#25 Boise State

Yes I have Alabama at #2.  They have looked really good but compared to Clemson I don’t think they measure up…yet.  Cincinnati is at #5 but we know what their schedule is like so this might end up being their peak ranking.  The first CFP Rankings don’t come out for over three weeks due to this season being a bit of a mess.  There is a possibility Cincinnati is barely in the Top 10 at that point even if they are undefeated.  It’s just the way things are unfortunately.  This is mostly because the Pac-12 starts their season (finally) this coming week and expect teams to move up the rankings rapidly if they do well.  With the Big XII already a shitshow, there could be room for a Pac-12 champ in there if a few things happen above them.  But there will have to be an undefeated season in there first.  Without that, there is no possible way, in my opinion, that a Pac-12 team gets into the CFP.  As for BYU I have them at #9 and the AP Poll has them the same and I feel that their ceiling is #12 or #13 unless a lot of chaos happens.  This is due to their quite weak schedule which is an unfortunate byproduct of the pandemic.

Football.  Every.  Day.  That’s right.  Every day between Wednesday and the day before American Thanksgiving.  And that day is the only day off between now and the end of November.  Let’s drink it in and enjoy this!  Saying that we are a little late to the party but we know what starts Wednesday night: MACtion Baby!  If it wasn’t for the American election it would have started Tuesday night but hey, good things come to those who wait, right?  Have a great week everyone.

Let’s talk about bacon – Week 6 College Football Recap

If you know what you are looking at then chances are your blood may be already starting to boil.  If not, let me explain.

Late in the Arkansas-Auburn game, Arkansas had the lead but Auburn was driving for a score, only needing a field goal to win.  The play above is where things really go off the rails.  Bo Nix takes the snap and immediately fumbles it.  He picks it up and then immediately spikes it.  First of all, you can’t do that in college football.  That’s considered intentional grounding.  What’s worse is that Nix spiked it behind his foot.  So that is a backwards pass…a lateral if you will.  At this point, a few officials blow their electronic whistles, one official definitely doesn’t, and one official throws a bean bag.  In the aftermath of this, an Arkansas player eventually recovers the ball.  So of course this is chaos already.

The referee calls it intentional grounding.  Of course many know that there is more to this than that.  And some are perplexed because the NFL does not have that rule about fumbling the snap (as far as I know).  The play gets reviewed.  It is pretty obvious the spike was behind Nix so it’s technically a fumble.  What does the replay official conclude?  He sticks with the call of intentional grounding, basically to bail out the officials on the field.  What a fucking joke.  According to Terry McAulay, retired official who does the rules for Sunday Night Football, said that because the Arkansas player continued to play through the whistle to recover the ball and that an Auburn player also continued to play at that point, that the whistle is irrelevant and that Arkansas should have been considered to have had an immediate recovery.  Instead, Auburn gets their chance at the field goal and hits it to win, robbing the Hogs of a deserved win.  So the SEC doubles down hours later about the rules.  And probably nothing will happen to either the replay official or the officiating team on the field.  This was not a missed call that was bad but really didn’t affect the outcome of the game.  It certainly did.  And Arkansas will not get the win they deserve.  Sad.

As for the rest of the weekend it was the best weekend so far.  A low bar for sure but there was a lot of exciting football.  Kept me glued to the TV for over 11 hours.  Let’s get down to recapping all this shall we?

And now for the rest of the recap

  • A great game down in College Station this past weekend.  Texas A&M won over Florida in a game many would call an upset.  I have to agree especially since Florida was a Top 5 team and I picked the Aggies to win in an upset (which makes me feel good).  Instead the Aggies gutted out a last-second walk-off field goal win and now their College Football Playoff aspirations are legit.  As for Florida, ugh….  When you think they are about to be a threat to Georgia in the SEC East, something like this happens.  It definitely won’t be easy for the Aggies the rest of the way in the SEC West but if they can somehow win out, then you have to take them seriously.  Also good for Jimbo Fisher for finally getting a signature win as the Aggies head coach.
  • Another upset occurred early in the day in a game that had to be moved because of Hurricane Delta (Burke?).  Missouri held on to beat the defending champs from LSU in a game moved from Baton Rouge to Columbia.  Everyone kind of knew the Tigers (of LSU) weren’t the same team but many their defense has looked terrible so far.  But you have to give Mizzou some credit.  If it wasn’t for them finally finding a starting quarterback in freshman Connor Bazelak, this game would have been an easy LSU win.  I am positive now that there will be rumblings of Ed Orgeron being fired because it’s college football and many fans are shitty people.
  • How about that game down in the other Death Valley (or the first Death Valley depending on which Tigers you prefer)?  Many felt the Canes would have a chance against Clemson.  Man were they ever fucking wrong.  This was not close, in any way, shape, or form.  Clemson just looks that much better than everyone in the conference.  Saying that, they do have new conference mate (for this season), Notre Dame later in the season which should be a banger.  As for Miami, they should still be fine.  It’s one blemish but they can work their way back into the New Year’s Six pretty easily if they run the table the rest of the way.  OK so pretty easily is a strong term.
  • And there is the unluckiness that is Pitt.  It was the Pittening yet again.  Kicker Alex Kessman made a 58-yard field goal with 40 seconds left just to send their game with Boston College into overtime.  Then, after BC had scored a TD and Pitt scored one of their own, Kessman missed the extra point.  You can’t make this stuff up.   Poor guy probably wanted to crawl under the turf at that point.
  • Alabama beat Ole Miss.  OK not a big deal.  What was amazing was Lane cutting the brakes off his offense and going nuts with it.  And it worked.  The Tide could not keep up with the Rebel offense.  It’s too bad the Rebel defense was equally as bad.  Although let’s be honest: Alabama’s offense is seriously good.  Not quite Clemson good, but arguably the best in the SEC.  And now Evil Nick Saban is 21-0 against his former assistants.  The student has not surpassed the teacher yet.
  • Let history show that the Tennessee football Volunteers led Georgia 21-17 at the half in this game. Again, the Vols allowed the the Dawgs to close out the game on a huge run, this one 27 points, but it’s still not a bad thing to see the Vols at least somewhat competitive.  They may be a year or two away from contending in the SEC East but the fans can see the light at the end of that tunnel.  Now they just have to allow Jeremy Pruitt to continue to improve things in Knoxville and it will work out (possibly).
  • I didn’t think Florida State could keep it close.  Like not at all.  But they were surprisingly effective until late in the second quarter.  But the Irish were still way too much for the Noles.  They are a legit contender to go to the ACC Championship.  Mike Norvell is struggling so far at Tallahassee and it will be interesting to see if he gets the same amount of chances as Willie Taggart got before he was dumped.
  • Back to games that were completely bonkers, look no further than the Red River Shootout.  And a shootout it was.  This game went to four overtimes and it felt like neither team wanted to win despite the fact they were putting up some gaudy stats.  Finally, Spencer Rattler didn’t fuck up and Sam Ehlinger couldn’t get it done and the Sooners pulled off the victory.  Still, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see neither of these two teams in the Big XII Championship in December.
  • That Virginia Tech-North Carolina game was more of a Big XII game than pretty much all the Big XII games on Saturday.  A hilariously poor showing of defense on both teams’ accounts.  North Carolina was able to pull away late but it wasn’t pretty.  The Tar Heels can’t afford to be like that on the defensive side of the ball when they play Notre Dame later on in the season or it could be a long day for Mack Brown and the boys from Chapel Hill.
  • Don’t sleep on the BYU Cougars.  The Cougars are 4-0 and look like they will probably be 7-0 when they get into November and their game against Boise State.  They are solidly in the Top 25 but will need to win and win big to move up the rankings.  Winning by a touchdown over UTSA won’t cut it, despite the fact the Roadrunners are going to be at least a contender to go bowling if not an outside shot at being a thorn in UAB’s side for the Conference USA West crown.
  • Iowa State keeps trundling along in the Big XII after that horrible opening loss to what is really a good Louisiana team.  The way things are going, it wouldn’t surprise me (and shouldn’t surprise others) if the Cyclones were heading to Dallas for the Big XII Championship in about two months.
  • What the hell happened at Mississippi State?  They looked great two weeks ago against LSU and then can’t do anything in their previous game and were even worse at Kentucky.  300 yards passing and 2 points.  So of course Mike Leach is already starting to blame some of the players.  This usually takes like two or three seasons to occur: it’s happening in two weeks in Starkville.  Yikes.
  • Another great game just happened to be Temple’s first game of the season.  No I’m not kidding.  And they played the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of college football, Navy.  Navy doesn’t know if they want to be good or they’re really fucking bad.  All I know is this ended up being a close finish after Navy took a fairly large lead and then allowed the Owls to crawl their way back for a chance to tie late.  I am sure Ken Niumatalolo secretly drinks heavily after games like this.
  • USF…what can you say?  They got throttled by East Carolina.  Yes, the East Carolina football Pirates.  The Bulls are so bad that when I tweeted about them being bad, a few people replied and agreed and they’re USF FANS!  Wow.
  • Finally, Charlotte took down North Texas.  That’s not really news.  The news is about the graphics used on the ESPN scoreboard.  Charlotte has a C with a pickaxe in the middle of it.  North Texas has UNT with an eagle.  Yes, it was a C followed by a UNT.

Alright that was seriously fun.  And soon enough we will get college football that lasts past 2 in the morning, like God intended it.  Oh man, there goes my sleep, which has already been bad but is about to get much worse.

Alright, let’s now look at the Bossman Top 25:

#1 Clemson
#2 Georgia
#3 Alabama
#4 North Carolina
#5 Notre Dame
#6 Ohio State
#7 Oklahoma State
#8 Florida
#9 Cincinnati
#10 Auburn
#11 Miami
#12 Penn State
#13 BYU
#14 Oregon
#15 Texas A&M
#16 Tennessee
#17 Wisconsin
#18 SMU
#19 Louisiana
#20 Michigan
#21 Iowa State
#22 Virginia Tech
#23 Kansas State
#24 Marshall
#25 Minnesota

Yes there are some differences between my rankings and the AP Poll, as usual.  I have Georgia at #2 and Notre Dame down at #5.  The Irish should move up just for the fact that I doubt we will have two SEC teams in the top three (I hope).  As for #6 through #12, pick the teams out of a hat to figure out the order.  A lot can happen the rest of the way and at this point, no one team is that much better than another.  And how about Marshall at #24.  I know the AP Poll doesn’t have them in there but man they deserve to be there in my humble opinion.  Also, yes I have BYU at #13.  It sounds like they probably won’t move that much further up from there but they are still undefeated and shouldn’t fall unless they lose.

Hey guess what we have?  FUN BELT!  Yes, weekday Sun Belt action is back and it starts on Wednesday night.  8:00 but who knows if Canadians can get it.  And it’s a big one.  Coastal Carolina and Louisiana.  I love weekday football.  Honestly, and I know I rail on the NFL being on Thursday but between late August and early January, the more football the better.  Have a good week everyone!

Guess who’s back. Back again. Big East’s back. Tell a friend. – Week 9 College Football Recap

Remember this conference?  It still exists in a basketball sense.  But the football conference met an ignominious end a few years back (and is now the American Conference, the best of the Group of Five conferences but let’s not talk about that right now).  I mean let’s just look at we have as we finished Week 9 of the 2018 college football season when it comes to old Big East schools:

  • West Virginia is #12 in the AP Poll and could be a dark horse College Football Playoff contender.
  • Syracuse is #22 and in the Top 25 for the first time in god knows how long.
  • Boston College is #24 and arguably the second best team in the ACC Atlantic division.
  • Miami and Virginia Tech have struggled but were both ranked at some point this season and had great seasons last year.
  • Temple is going to be bowl-eligible and Pitt might end up being that getting a gritty win over Duke this past weekend.
  • Rutgers………….ok let’s just stop while we’re ahead.

Can’t say that about the former Big Eight or Southwest Conference can you?  Nah.  Best former conference out there and it’s not even close.  I mean they win nothing for that but still.  I kind of wish the Big East was back in college football.

Look let’s just get right to the recap as it was a crazy week in college football…well, crazier than usual.  It started slow and sped up really fast as the afternoon went on.  Let’s get going!

Don’t write off Penn State just yet.  We knew the Nittany Lions would have a tough road to get back into New Year’s Six contention.  It was a good start to hold on to beat Iowa though.  Their game against Michigan will decide whether they have a legitimate shot or not.  As for Iowa, they are in a disastrous Big Ten West that has fallen on hard times.  But technically someone has to win it right?  So Iowa has as good a shot as a few other teams in that division but still…not a good look.

The Cocktail Party started strong and ended with a bit of a whimper.  Kind of like how most cocktail parties go right?  Starts strong as everyone is drinking and having fun.  Then at some point people slow down and some people start vomiting and others leave and the party fizzles out.  Those vomiting, early-exit people were the Florida Gators this weekend.  They started well.  Kept pace with Georgia for a little over three quarters.  Then it all went to shit and the Dawgs proved they were the beasts of the SEC East…until next week when that’s on the line against Kentucky.

Bedlam could be super important again.  The Oklahoma State Cowboys pulled off the upset of the week by taking down Texas (who is still somewhat back).  This means that Bedlam will be important as if the Fighting Mullets can somehow beat Oklahoma as well that would mean the Pokes still have a shot and that West Virginia could be the favourite going to the Big XII Championship at JerryWorld.  A lot still has to happen for that to occur but don’t rule it out as we have already had a few weeks that were completely off the rails this season.  Also, I would definitely take Mike Gundy in a fight over Tom Herman.  Herman looks like a bulldog but I think Gundy has a bit of Ric Flair in him and would do anything to get the W.

Cheer, Cheer for Old Notre Dame!  Notre Dame had no problem with Navy.  So really, despite what anyone might think, if the Irish win out, they are in the College Football Playoff.  As for Navy, they will have shockingly win out to just be bowl-eligible.  Wow, what a fall for the Middies.  I wonder if it’s more an anomaly than anything but to see them sink like a stone in the American like this is stunning.

CLANGA!  Mississippi State, in front of tens of thousands of cowbell-ringing fans, upset Texas A&M and continued Jimbo Fisher’s up-and-down first season at College Station.  The Bulldogs have also had an up-and-down season in Joe Moorhead’s first kick at the can in Starkville.  And because of that, neither team has a chance to dethrone Bama at the top of the SEC West.  Not that that was going to happen but both fanbases thought they would at least have a shot going into November.

Wazzu in the catbird seat.  Yes.  Wazzu.  Washington State.  The Cougs.  That team.  Out in Pullman.  They are the Pac-12 North’s last hope to get to the College Football Playoff.  So they are putting all their eggs in the Mike Leach basket.  Interesting.  Anyway, that Air Raid train kept rolling as Washington State kicked a game-winning field goal late in the fourth to beat Stanford in a game that about 17 people watched on television.

And then there was one.  Well one in the American conference.  And by one I mean one undefeated team left.  And that’s UCF.  This is because Houston basically beat the holy hell out of previously-undefeated USF.  Now it looks like we are going headlong into a UCF-Houston AAC Championship match to probably determine the Group of Five New Year’s Six representative.  Then again, there is still a few weeks left so who knows what the hell will happen.

Yes there was a shirtless guy in the stands reading a book…  It’s the perfect microcosm for a Florida State fan this season.  The Noles got boatraced by Clemson in Florida State’s worst home loss ever.  Let’s be honest: Clemson has woken up and is now seriously looking like a national title contender.  Saying that, Florida State has fallen on hard times…at least compared to what they are used to in Tallahassee.  Willie Taggart isn’t on any hot seat but next season may be his final shot to start the turnaround.

How about the crazy finish in CoMo?  So the Wildcats had looked terrible for about 59 minutes against Mizzou.  They did not look like a team on the cusp of being in the Top 10.  Then they drive down the field down 5.  Looks like the final play of the game.  Incomplete pass!  But the Tigers were called for defensive pass interference.  Kind of a chintzy call but nothing you can do now.  UK gets an untimed down and gets a touchdown on the final play to pull out the improbable victory.  It means their game next Saturday against Georgia is for the SEC East title.  Put up your hand if you figured this would be the case.  Now everyone put your hands down because you are all dirty liars.

Remember what I said about the Big East?  How about the Cuse!  They put a 50-burger up on NC State (51 to be exact) and are looking damn good.  Dino Babers finally (FINALLY!) has this team playing the way he wants them to.  He’s always been known for his high-tempo offenses and now it’s finally working.  They probably have no shot at the New Year’s Six but they are in the Top 25 so if they keep winning then it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

And now to the other half of the Apple Cup…  Yeah Washington is not going to the College Football Playoff.  That is a guarantee now.  Especially after their awful performance against Cal.  Yes Myles Gaskin was out but still.  Hell, Jake Browning didn’t even finish the game because Chris Petersen pulled him.  Not exactly looking like a team that is a top contender.

And your Big Ten West leaders…  Your Northwestern Wildcats.  No kidding.  Northwestern’s upset win of Wisconsin has put them in the driver’s seat (somehow) in the Big Ten West.  Never has winning the Big Ten East been so important as it is now since it seems there aren’t any seriously good teams in the West.

Alright, enough recappin’.  Let’s get to the Bossman Top 25!

#1 Alabama
#2 Clemson
#3 Georgia
#4 Notre Dame
#5 LSU
#6 Michigan
#7 Oklahoma
#8 UCF
#9 Washington State
#10 Ohio State
#11 Penn State
#12 Kentucky
#13 West Virginia
#14 Florida
#15 Texas
#16 Utah
#17 Houston
#18 Iowa
#19 Syracuse
#20 Virginia
#21 Utah State
#22 Boston College
#23 Fresno State
#24 Texas A&M
#25 Washington

Yes I have Georgia at #3.  They looked good against Florida who was also ranked in the Top 10.  LSU is down at #5 but could be #1 if they beat Bama on Saturday so this still doesn’t mean a whole lot.  The first CFP Rankings come out tomorrow so I am sure my Top 4 won’t be the same Top 4 The Committee has and I don’t care.  The Irish probably have the “easiest” route to the College Football Playoff at this point.  Win out and they are in, no questions asked.  Or at least there shouldn’t be.  We shouldn’t sleep on Washington State, especially if they run the regular season table.  The Pac-12 is a complete shitshow but the perception changes if the Cougs can sneak into the CFP.  Also, remember that Ohio State is lurking in the weeds.  As for UCF I have them at #8 and the AP Poll has them at #9 so at least they have moved up a bit.  They still need a lot of chaos above them to move up.

Football.  Every.  Day.  That’s right.  Every day between now and the day before American Thanksgiving.  And that day is the only day off between now and November 29th.  Let’s drink it in and enjoy this!  Saying that we have some MACtion tomorrow night.  Kent State-Bowling Green and Miami-OH-Buffalo on the specialty pack.  It continues Wednesday night with Ball State-Toledo, also on the specialty pack.  In celebration of this, maybe I should include an extra post this week.  Sounds like a plan, Bossman.  Sounds like a plan.  Enjoy your week everyone.

James, what the hell were you thinking? – Week 5 College Football Recap

Most of us don’t get the reasoning here.  I still don’t.  It’s not like James Franklin is now on the hot seat or anything because he isn’t.  But this felt like a bonehead play call at the most inopportune time.  They took a timeout to call a draw on 4th and 5?  Makes absolutely no sense considering what Trace McSorley had been doing all night.  And they had Ohio State on the ropes, again.  Second straight year they blow a two-possession lead in the fourth quarter.  tOSU is now in the catbird seat in the Big Ten East and I honestly don’t foresee then relinquishing that spot.  And now the Fighting Franklins can’t afford another loss or else any division title or New Year’s Six dreams go down the shitter.

It was a fairly exciting weekend of college football (as per usual) so let’s get right down to it.

This somewhat crazy weekend really kicked into gear with Syracuse traveling to Death Valley to play Clemson.  My pick to win it all, Clemson, struggled with Syracuse.  Losing Trevor Lawrence to a concussion does not help.  Chase Brice was able to lead the Tigers back from a deficit basically all game to keep Clemson undefeated.  Syracuse is quite good and people better watch them in the future.  Dino Babers definitely turning that program around.

Notre Dame put on another show, this time against Stanford.  The Irish are starting to hit their stride.  They still have a couple difficult games upcoming with the Virginia Tech one next week on ABC in primetime being a huge one.  It’ll be interesting if Touchdown Jesus can win that game.  At that point they have to seriously start talking about Notre Dame as a College Football Playoff contender.  That should blow some people’s minds and also piss a lot of people off who hate Notre Dame for being all Notre Dame-y.  That and the fact that Rudy was offside.

Hey guess what?  Tennessee lost to Georgia again.  Ho hum.  Not as bad as last year’s affair but still pretty bad.  They can’t seem to do anything on offense.  I get that Georgia is a really good team and possibly a College Football Playoff contender but the Vols look like they had no fight on Saturday.  The Vols are going to struggle just to get to a bowl game.  The Dawgs, on the other hand, have a fairly clear path to the CFP.  Win out and then it doesn’t matter what happens in the SEC Championship because they’re probably in.

The Dan Mullen Return to Stark Vegas Extravaganza did not go the way anyone thought it would.  Many, including myself, figured Mississippi State would win.  Maybe not by a huge margin, but they would win nonetheless.  Instead, we got a relatively boring, low-point affair that kind of just fizzled at the end.  Gators win, Dan Mullen wins, Bulldog fans are unhappy.

West Virginia is quietly undefeated.  They quietly have a Heisman candidate in Will Grier.  Yes they just beat Texas Tech by basically outscoring them because defense is for losers in the middle part of the country (supposedly).  It would not be a surprise to see them in the Big XII Championship this season and they could put the entire CFP into chaos by winning it (especially since everyone, including me, believes Oklahoma will win the conference).

Virginia Tech bounced back from their horrific loss to Old Dominion (who lost to East Carolina this past Saturday just so you know) by beating a Duke team that was ranked for one week and that’s it.  This all means that the Hokies are still in line for that ACC Championship spot out of the ACC Coastal.  Imagine them getting to the CFP with a loss to Old Freakin’ Dominion?  Some of the ESPN talking heads would blow a gasket.  Joel Klatt would go on a crazy rant.  It would be awesome to watch.

Bama has absolutely crushed pretty much all their opponents this season.  They just destroyed the Ragin’ Cajuns of Louisiana just recently.  That matters little at this point.  What is more important is that Jalen Hurts played in his fifth game of the season meaning he cannot redshirt.  So if he transfers (or more like WHEN he transfers), he will do so as a graduate senior, not a graduate junior.  Only one year left for him to be at the most important spot on a contending team.  Also, this helps the Tide if Tua Tagovailoa goes down with an injury at some point this season.

LSU laid a beating on Ole Miss.  It’s interesting now that the Tigers have a half-decent quarterback.  They have to be considered contenders and other than their yearly primetime CBS game against Alabama, there’s not another game on the schedule where you look at it and say “Yep, they’re gonna lose that for sure.”  Ed Orgeron is going to get like a 20-year extension if the Bayou Bengals get to the College Football Playoff.

Kentucky is sneaking up on everyone in the SEC East.  They have started 3-0 in conference play for the first time ever after beating South Carolina.  Honestly, their game against Georgia will probably end up being for the SEC East crown which is kind of shocking but shows how well Mark Stoops is doing with the Wildcats.  Having Benny Snell doesn’t hurt either.

UCF annihilated Pitt and is still the favourite for the Group of Five spot.  Enough said.

Michigan might actually be good.  Who knows?  They did come back from 17 down to defeat Northwestern (who is probably not as good as I thought) but still…it shows that the Wolverines actually have some fight in them.  Let’s be honest, they probably lose at least one more game the rest of the season but I am sure Big Blue Nation and Jim Harbaugh are hoping for better than that.  Either that or many in Big Blue Nation will want Harbaugh shitcanned for not beating Ohio State again.

Alright enough recappin’.  Time for another Bossman Top 25.  I am sure you might bristle at some of my rankings.  I will explain below:

#1 Alabama
#2 Ohio State
#3 Notre Dame
#4 Georgia
#5 Clemson
#6 LSU
#7 Washington
#8 Oklahoma
#9 Auburn
#10 West Virginia
#11 Stanford
#12 Michigan
#13 Wisconsin
#14 Penn State
#15 UCF
#16 Kentucky
#17 Miami
#18 Oregon
#19 Michigan State
#20 Colorado
#21 Virginia Tech
#22 Oklahoma State
#23 Texas
#24 Boise State
#25 Florida

Yep, I put Clemson at #5.  To be honest, they have struggled this season whereas Notre Dame, Ohio State and Georgia have performed quite well.  Bama, well they are the easy #1.  Remember this is how I feel about the teams NOW.  It has nothing to do with who I think will be the teams in the CFP at the end of the season.  Now that one of my picks, Penn State, has been knocked down a bit, I have to change things up.  Right now I would say it’s still Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma but now I would add Ohio State.  Georgia is an intriguing possibility but the other four teams would be ahead of them unless they can somehow pull out an SEC Championship.

I will see about doing a Wednesday post.  I have been quite busy lately so I don’t know.  For sure you will still get the college football schedule on Thursday and the NFL schedule on Friday.  No need to change tradition, right?  Have a great week everyone!

Most Important Games of the 2018 College Football Season – Part II: Football Boogaloo

God I wish.  Can you even fucking imagine how popular this would be?  I mean I only have a PS3 right now but would run out IMMEDIATELY to get a new system if EA Sports was putting out a new college football game.  I hear rumblings that another company is going to put out a game without licensing.  I don’t know how well that would work but hey, it’s something at this point, right?

So now I feel like a big dummy.  I could have waited a few days but noooooooooo I just had to jump the gun and post the first of this series of most important games of the season.  So what happens yesterday?  A big schedule dump.  ESPN.  FOX.  CBS.  The first three weeks are almost set now.  So now that those are pretty much set, I have a few announcements *clears throat*:

  • I had the FAU-OU game on the right network, just at the wrong time.  This game will now start at Noon.  Nice start to the day I would say.
  • Again I was right with the network on another one but REALLY had the wrong time.  Ole Miss-Texas Tech will now go off at noon from Houston rather than the weird 9:30 start time that ESPN has used the last couple of seasons on opening Saturday.
  • We will not get to see Boise State-Troy because it is now on ESPNEWS.   BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
  • I got USC-Stanford VERY wrong.  Not on ABC.  It’s on FOX.  Not in the afternoon.  At 8:30.  Yeah.
  • Speaking of FOX again, UCLA-Oklahoma now begins at 1:00.  You see that right…1:00.  That is not very PVR-friendly but in this day and age, who gives a shit anymore.  Hell, I don’t even use my PVR as much as I have in previous years.
  • I think I underestimated how bad Week 2 is.  Case in point: Colorado-Nebraska has been moved to ABC at 3:30.  Not reverse-mirror: national broadcast.  Yeesh.
  • In Week 3, Washington-Utah and USC-Texas have slightly different start times but otherwise they are correct.
  • On the other hand, Boise State-Oklahoma State was wildly wrong.  They are now at 3:30, probably on the specialty pack.
  • We still can’t see Rutgers-Kansas but it has been demoted to FSN.
  • And here’s something new: Southern Miss-Appalachian State is not on ESPN3.  It’s on ESPN+.  I will have to do a bit of digging to see if this is available to Canadians but I assume it isn’t because Jesus doesn’t love us.  Or is that the CRTC?

Alright, enough of the Ya Blew It section, let’s move on.  Now we get to what is truly speculative as 95% of games from Week 4 on have little to no information attached to them.  This is where I can REALLY screw things up.  So let’s begin shall we?

Week 4

Game of the Week: Texas A&M at Alabama (7:00, specialty pack) – Jimbo Fisher has a rough early going in his first season in College Station.  Clemson early on and then his first SEC game will be against Evil Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide Juggernaut Brigade.  If he can somehow, SOMEHOW, coax this team (which should actually be pretty good) into keeping this game close into the fourth quarter, then at least we can say he is already starting to earn his money from that fat contract he has or hasn’t signed yet.

Other Really Important Games: Georgia at Missouri (7:30, specialty pack) – First two games on the specialty pack this week.  Not good for you non-specialty pack people.  And the fact that Mizzou is near the top of this list is another interesting thing.  I think they will be wildly improved from last season and this has to be considered an early trap game for UGA.  I mean Georgia is the team to beat in the East by far but if they lose, say, two conference games then it is a complete free-for-all for that division.

Notre Dame at Wake Forest (Noon, ABC/TSN3) – I’m just going to say this here: this could be the game that makes or breaks Brian Kelly’s season.  Serious.  Let’s look at this: the Irish can lose to Michigan on the opening weekend and many will just say “Michigan’s back.”  So it buys the Irish a reprieve if that happens.  Then they have Ball State and Vandy in consecutive weeks meaning they should be 2-1, at worst, going into this game.  But the Deacs are a good team.  They will give Notre Dame a fight in this one.  But it’s also Wake Forest.  A team with not the greatest winning pedigree.  A loss here will fan the flames to the point of possibly no return.  Makes for exciting drama, no?

Stanford at Oregon (3:30, ABC) – I feel bad for poor Oregon State and Cal in the Pac-12 North.  They have these two teams, plus the two Washington schools, to deal with every season.  No wonder neither program has done anything of note in years.  As for this game, it’s game one of the Pac-12 North Round Robin of Doom and Destruction that is sure to knock every team out of the College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six yet again.

Florida Atlantic at UCF (Friday, 7:00, specialty pack) – Going out on a bit of a limb but I am saying that this could be the Group of Five game of the year right here.  Inter-Florida battle.  The Lane Train.  New coach in Orlando.  All kinds of storylines going into this one.  Should be fun.  Plus it gets the ESPN national broadcast so it shows that both of these programs are starting to get a lot of respect from the media.

Wisconsin at Iowa (7:30, ABC) – Will Wisconsin be as good as last season?  Probably not so I don’t have the worry of saying they will run the regular season table (which they did) and then lose the Big Ten Championship (which they did) and still make it to the CFP (which they didn’t).  Two out of three ain’t bad.  And we all know how the Fighting Ferentzes do in big B1G games.  Wouldn’t call it an upset if Iowa won but it’s definitely not being expected here by anyone, probably even most Hawkeye fans.

TCU at Texas (3:30, specialty pack) – Is Texas back?  Is Texas back?  IS TEXAS BACK?  I get that ESPN and FOX (especially ESPN) desperately wants Texas to be back.  To be good again.  Even great again.  But this narrative is so tiring.  Meanwhile, Gary Patterson is one of the best coaches of this era and tends to not get as much love for what he’s done with a Horned Frogs program that I think has been in every single FBS conference that has ever existed.  OK maybe not the MAC.  But still.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Pittsburgh at North Carolina (3:30, specialty pack) – OK hear me out.  I fully expect one of these teams, if not both of them, to not be very good this season.  But saying that, this could be a very close, very good game.  The proof comes from some of the games these two teams have played since Pitt joined the ACC.  It was either this or Texas Tech-Oklahoma State.  I stand by my choice.

Best Group of Five Game: Florida Atlantic at UCF (Friday, 7:00, specialty pack) – See in Other Really Important Games section.

Worst Power Five Game: Kansas at Baylor (Noon, FSN) – I foresee Kansas being in this section a lot.  At least we aren’t subjected to it this time around.

Week 5

Game of the Week: Ohio State at Penn State (7:30, ABC) – Not just Game of the Week but potential Game of the Year.  You can make the argument that the Big Ten could all come down to this one game and you probably wouldn’t be far off.  Both teams will have potential Heisman candidates.  Should be a lot of offense.  Interesting thing is that even a loss here might not kill their CFP chances which is crazy since in 99% of games the loser of a game would destroy any chance of a possible national title.

Other Really Important Games: Stanford at Notre Dame (7:30, NBC) – Two very good early season games on in primetime.  This is when you know the college football broadcasting gods are shining down on us, the lowly viewers.  Brian Kelly may be pulling out all the stops at this point to secure his job.  And David Shaw is David Shaw.  I am sure he could have a loaded gun pointed at him and he would still look like he is as calm as someone watching a Bob Ross marathon (although not quite as sleepy…that shit works for insomnia I’m tellin ya!).

Ole Miss at LSU (Noon, TSN5) – This year’s Ole Miss squad reminds me a bit of Urban Meyer’s first Ohio State team: a team that was pretty damn good but wasn’t going anywhere thanks to being on probation/sanctions/whatever they call it now.  As I said, a bit.  They aren’t nearly as good as that team that probably would have had a good shot at winning the natty.  But this time will be better than last year’s that is for sure.  Oh and Orgeron Hot Seat Watch 2018 continues here.

Florida at Mississippi State (7:00, specialty pack) – The return of Dan Mullen to Starkville.  I hope he gets a really good reception from the Bulldog faithful.  He deserves it for taking a pretty bad program and turning it around rather quickly.  It will be interesting to see if he follows the path of his predecessor, Jim Bob McElwain.  Start off good, tail off a decent amount and then something happens and you’re out of a job after it looks like you made sweet, sweet love to a shark.

Florida State at Louisville (3:30, ABC) – Maybe giving a bit too much love to the Cardinals here.  I honestly don’t know how well they will do this season without all-world Lamar Jackson.  I’m giving them the better of the two daytime ABC spots because I have a feeling Bobby Petrino would have figured things out by now (sans a potential Alabama massacre to start their season) and the Noles will be rebounding quite nicely after a not-so-good year last season.

Michigan at Northwestern (Noon, ABC) – I am still torn as to which game should get the mid-afternoon timeslot and which should get the supposed Noon death spot.  I will go with the Big Ten here since to be honest, they draw better than any conference without the words Southeastern and Conference in it.  Michigan will be obviously overrated coming into this one and Northwestern will be underrated.  Almost always how it is.  How these teams are at this point of the season will dictate where this game ends up.

USC at Arizona (9:00, specialty pack) – Yes I have this game at the odd 9:00 timeslot.  I know at some point again this season, ESPN will play around with three-hour timeslots, knowing they won’t work but doing them anyway.  Really it’s an excuse to say the games didn’t end at 2:30 in the morning, they ended at 1:00 in the morning.  Either way, the people staying up to watch it (on the east coast) are quite possibly insane (like me) or it’s their job to report on these games (unlike me).  Anyway, Khalil Tate could end up being the real story here since he has to be a Heisman frontrunner coming out of the gate.  Unless the Wildcats suck, they will get more national attention than they have in years.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Virginia Tech at Duke (Noon, TSN3) – Even when Duke wasn’t that good, they seemed to give the Hokies fits for some reason.  The Dookies (aha) should be better this season and Tech may be an outside national title contender if their offense can put some points on the board (since we all know the Hokies defense should be solid as per usual thanks to Bud Foster).

Best Group of Five Game: Toledo at Fresno State (10:30, TSN2) – I see people looking at this and thinking I have no idea what I am talking about.  Let me explain my thinking here.  TSN2, at this point, has a 10:30pm window that night for college football.  I have ESPN using their funky three-hour windows this week meaning they would not have a game at 10:30 that night.  The only other ESPN2/ESPNU game that night would be this one.  And for the G5, it’s a very good one.  Toledo will try to keep making it into the New Year’s Six as they have been one of the consistently good MAC teams for the past decade or so.  Fresno State tries to build off of last year’s success.  Should be good.

Worst Power Five Game: Oregon State at Arizona State (8:00, Pac-12 Network) – Hey maybe Herm Edwards will keep ASU doing well this year.  Crazier things have happened.

Week 6

Game of the Week: Auburn at Mississippi State (Noon, specialty pack) – I would say there is a possibility this moves to the SEC on CBS afternoon slot but LSU-Florida is there so no, that won’t happen.  This despite the fact this game has two potential dark horse CFP contenders.  I could also call this the SNEAKY-GOOD UNDERRATED GAME of the week but I made a solemn vow to myself that never shall these two paths meet, Amen.  Anyway, loser probably forfeits their chance to usurp Alabama as the king of the SEC West (for this season).

Other Really Important Games: Notre Dame at Virginia Tech (3:30, ABC) – Many would say this should be the game of the week.  I would but Notre Dame is still a bit of a mystery to me (and many others).  I am interested to see how many times Brian Kelly’s possible shitcanning comes up.  I am putting the over/under at 9.

Florida State at Miami (8:00, ABC) – A few of the most recent games between these two programs have been fantastic.  ABC is surely hoping this continues.  Also lately it has been a night game recently so I am assuming it ends up here and ND-VT gets the afternoon spot (but I can see them easily switch spots).  So get ready for ample talk of: Bobby Bowden, Jimmy Johnson, Jimbo Fisher, Wide Rights 1, 2 and 3 and Butch Davis.  We may hear more of that than actual talk about the game just as an FYI.

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas) (Noon, FOX) – Time once again for the Red River SHOOTOUT.  I wish they would stop being idiots about this kind of thing.  Like if you were to look at gun crime statistics for Washington, D.C. for when their NBA team was called the Bullets and when it was called the Wizards, I am sure you will see no discernible difference between the two.  Anyway, for once, this feels like we are almost back to way it was last decade when both teams were in the Top 25 and the result was almost always weird and wacky (and devastating for the higher ranked team).  The Sooners will be there for sure: will Tom Herman have his team trending back towards glory by this point?

Clemson at Wake Forest (7:15, specialty pack) – This feels like the type of game that in 2019 would be potentially moved to the ACC Network to anchor the primetime slate.  And when it comes up some would say it’s a bit of a coup to get this game there for the ACC Network.  In the end it would be good because it would get a huge game out of the way early and allow ABC/ESPN to air more Clemson (and perhaps Wake Forest) games down the stretch.  We’ve been through this with the SEC Network and especially the Big Ten Network so it’s old hat at this point.  Should be a good game though!  Don’t expect the Tigers to run away with this one.

Washington at UCLA (8:00, FOX) – This will be one of those weeks where FOX gladly takes a back seat to ABC/ESPN and doesn’t go all out to get the best games (at least on paper).  Not saying this one won’t be good but FOX is sure hoping Chip Kelly brings his magic early to Westwood since the Huskies will still be (arguably) the team to beat in the Pac-12.

LSU at Florida (3:30, CBS) – They might as well put a camera on each head coach since that’s what will be talked about for at least half the game.  I am sure Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson wouldn’t want to do that (and would instead, you know, want to call the action) but their hands will be tied.  Dan Mullen was a huge hire in Gainesville and the Ed Orgeron Hot Seat Tour continues in earnest.  Should be good fun.  Honestly, CBS should switch this with the Auburn-MSU game but the storylines for this one will be too big to ignore (unless Gus Malzahn or Joe Moorhead maim a football player during practice or something).

Utah at Stanford (10:45, TSN3) – Some late-night TSN action!  Expect a bit more of this type of thing this year as TSN spreads their coverage out a bit more than in past years (more evening and late-night games, less going all-in at Noon).  If Kyle Whittingham EVER wants to get his team over the hump to the Pac-12 Championship (and possibly the Rose Bowl) these are the games they must win.  And it won’t be easy against Cool Hand Dave and his Cardinal crew.

Northwestern at Michigan State (Noon, TSN2) – Man there are a LOT of good games this week.  This is why this is the best week of college football before November.  This is another game that could go in the underrated category since everyone seems to underrate Northwestern every season but it’s a bit too good to go there (plus I will continue to follow my own rules, as ridiculous as they may be).  First week with two TSN games in the best games of the week since Week 1.

Sneaky-Good Underrated Game: Missouri at South Carolina (Noon, specialty pack) – One of these teams will be at least an 8-win team and will cause serious waves in the SEC East.  I guarantee* it (*guarantee is not guaranteed).

Best Group of Five Game: San Diego State at Boise State (3:30, specialty pack) – I think ESPN will make a bit more effort to put big Mountain West games on either in the afternoon or in primetime, even if they end up on ESPNU.  This is one of those games.  It behooves ESPN to do this because it will make for more eyeballs on the late-night games where people would rather sleep.  Haha, what a joke.  Sleep?  On a college football Saturday?  What the hell is that?

Worst Power Five Game: Illinois at Rutgers (Noon, BTN) – Kansas and Oregon State would have spots here if we got FS1/FSN or the Pac-12 Network was something worth getting.  Since that’s not the case, Rutgers will be the King of the Power Five Basement Television Games Seen in Canada.  I need to work on that.  A little too wordy.

Pretty much halfway through the season now.  I am assuming a few more gametimes will come in over the next week.  After Week 3 though it is a tiny bit of a crapshoot with many games going on a 12-day hold where networks have up until 12 days before the Saturday to select which games will be on that week.  So there is a good chance none of this correct.  I hope that’s not the case but no guarantees.

As for preview magazines, I finally got one: the Street & Smith one.  I will be getting Athlon’s later this week and then the Lindy’s magazine in a week or two.  I am also getting the Phil Steele preview (of course) but going the digital route this year so I actually get it before the end of July (which I always hate).  Makes it so I can’t take it into the shitter and read but oh well, some sacrifices have to be made.  Have a good rest of the week everyone.

What an unbelievable Saturday…and Friday…and Thursday night – Week 13 College Football Recap

So I have decided to do this recap differently as well, using my scheduling post to go through the week that was.  And what a week it was in college football.

So much happened and I am exhausted just thinking about it.  Smiling, but exhausted.  A lot of football to watch and I was glad to do it.  I will remember this week in a few months where this is no college football and none on the horizon.  Dark times, my friends.  Here we go!

This recap will consist of the scores alongside what the broadcast information was.  We shall see if this ends up being easier than the normal recap I do.  The answer, I am sure, is no but I’m going to give it a shot anyway.

Thursday

Ole Miss 31 Mississippi State 28 7:30 PM

Mississippi State had an outside shot at a New Year’s Six bowl game.  This loss sealed their fate.  The one thing everyone will be talking about with this Egg Bowl is Nick Fitzgerald’s injury.  It was gruesome and tough to watch.  If you haven’t seen it, let’s just say it’s an ankle injury and leave it at that.  He will be back next season so at least it wasn’t a career-ender.  But still, tough on that kid for this to happen.  And on top of that, Dan Mullen coached his last game in Starkville as Florida hired him as their new head coach.  Rough week for the Bulldogs.

Friday

Toledo 37 Western Michigan 10 11:30 AM

Toledo dominated WMU and if it wasn’t for an upset at the hands of Ohio they may have been in the New Year’s Six mix.  Instead they will head to Detroit for the MAC Championship for the first time in over a decade.  That seems shocking to me considering how good the Rockets have been the past decade.

Pittsburgh 24 Miami 14 Noon

Is this 2007?  Pittsburgh did the same thing to a #2 team back then by foiling West Virginia’s national championship hopes.  They may have hampered the Canes’ hopes with this win but The U can still get in to the College Football Playoff with a win in the ACC Championship on Saturday.  One of the best parts of this was Pat Narduzzi at halftime basically saying this would happen.  Gutsy.  Anyway, this may have usurped Syracuse’s upset of Clemson as Upset of the Year.

Central Michigan 31 Northern Illinois 24 Noon

With Toledo blowing WMU out this game became not important at all to NIU.  And then the Chippewas beat the Huskies anyway.

Houston 24 Navy 14 Noon

Nothing important here although I am seriously wondering if Navy goes to the Army-Navy game as an underdog.

Missouri 48 Arkansas 45 2:30 PM

Bret Bielema was fired on the field after the game.  That’s insane.  And classless.  The Razorbacks are in disarray and I don’t know of a prominent coach will go there now considering what just happened.  I am guessing Bielema will take a one-year break from coaching to head to the booth.

UCF 49 USF 42 3:30 PM

Possibly the best Group of Five game ever.  This game was bonkers.  So much scoring, especially late in the game.  Have to give the Bulls credit, they kept it close.  UCF might be the best G-5 team of the CFP era but they still have a tough AAC Championship against Memphis coming up.

San Diego State 35 New Mexico 10 3:30 PM

Not important although surprising how far New Mexico fell in one season.

FIU 41 Western Kentucky 17 7:00 PM

FIU has been surprisingly good this season.  In all the Lane Kiffin hoopla, people forgot that Butch Davis came to Florida International and has turned the program around quickly as well.

Virginia Tech 10 Virginia 0 8:00 PM

This was not a good game.  Possibly the only good thing about it was it was done in about three hours.

Texas Tech 27 Texas 23 8:00 PM

This game was significantly longer than the VT-UVA game that was on at the same time.  The Red Raiders pulled it out at the end to become bowl-eligible and crush the spirits of many 5-7 teams.

Saturday Early

Memphis 70 East Carolina 13 Noon

Good god.  Memphis-UCF is going to be fun next week.  Whatever you do, take the over.

Georgia 38 Georgia Tech 7 Noon

Georgia proved why they are still possibly deserving of a CFP spot.  Or Georgia Tech proved why they should stay home for bowl season.  Probably a bit of both.

SMU 41 Tulane 38 Noon

If you saw the end of this game, it would have infuriated you.  Temple was on the SMU 2 with a few seconds left.  For some unknown reason they called a run play, and it looked like the QB crossed the plane of the goal line for a touchdown with no time left.  This would have sent Tulane to a bowl game.  The referee called the runner down just outside the goal line.  Replay couldn’t see the obvious that he had to have crossed the goal line with the ball.  In the end, the Green Wave will be home for the holidays because of a completely botched call.  Don’t get me wrong, I am all for replay and getting calls right.  But when the officials AND the replay officials both fuck things up then we have a serious problem.

Florida State 38 Florida 22 Noon

Florida State won this easily.  Both teams are god-awful.  Now let’s hope Florida State has to go to Shreveport since there are other ACC teams that deserve to go to better locales because they had better seasons.

Purdue 31 Indiana 24 Noon

Can’t call them Purdon’t anymore!  Purdue has had quite the bounceback season under Jeff Brohm who I am sure will be courted by some of the football powers in college football.  Feels weird to put Purdue in my bowl projections just so you know.

Ohio State 31 Michigan 20 Noon

FOX had to be happy that almost no other game was relatively close (and the two that were were games of lesser importance overall).  tOSU keeps on trucking with this win and now they could legitimately be one win away from the College Football Playoff which seems absurd for a team that allowed Iowa to score 55 points on them.  It’s not 2007.  It’s not 1990.  But it is this decade’s crazy college football year for sure.

Louisville 44 Kentucky 17 Noon

This was revenge for last season.  Pure and simple.

Boston College 42 Syracuse 14 12:30 PM

Syracuse’s late-season collapse is one of the more confusing aspects of a season full of confusion and chaos.  How Dino Babers’ squad went from what was at the time the upset of the year (and may still be labelled as such by some) over Clemson to being an ACC also-ran in a matter of a a little over a month is mind-boggling.  Babers is probably squarely on the hot seat now for next season.

Saturday Afternoon

Auburn 26 Alabama 14 3:30 PM

This game pretty much lived up to all the hype.  Auburn is the real deal and Bama can be slayed.  In the end this could mean that both teams make the College Football Playoff but for now let’s drink in the chaos, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!

NC State 33 North Carolina 21 3:30 PM

I think I watched about 28 seconds of this game.

Wisconsin 31 Minnesota 0 3:30 PM

Here’s another game I watched very little of.  It felt from about the halfway mark of the first quarter that there was no way Wisconsin was losing this.  Now they are one win over Ohio State away from being in the College Football Playoff (like I said at the start of the season…kind of).

Fresno State 28 Boise State 17 3:30 PM

Fresno State’s win means the Mountain West has no shot at a New Year’s Six bowl.  These same two teams meet again in Boise this Saturday.  You know what, I can buy the arguments against conference championships.  Here’s a prime example.  It’s why Bedlam was moved a few weeks up; to avoid having a rematch in back-to-back weeks.

Oklahoma 59 West Virginia 31 3:30 PM

Man the Sooners put a hurtin’ on the Mountaineers.  And what was all the horseshit with the captains carrying Baker Mayfield’s jersey to midfield for the coin toss.  He didn’t fucking die.  He wasn’t paralyzed from a hit.  He wasn’t in an accident.  He wasn’t wrongly convicted of a crime.  He got suspended for grabbing his junk and telling the Kansas sideline to fuck off.  And the suspension lasted…two plays.  What a joke.  He will still win the Heisman and we will all forget about this in a few weeks.

Kansas State 20 Iowa State 19 3:30 PM

What a fantastic finish here.  Nothing really to play for but KSU marching down the field (which is kind of unlike them) and scoring on the final play of the game was awesome to watch and part of what makes college football so great.

Penn State 66 Maryland 3 3:30 PM

I’m not sad I don’t have BTN.  Honestly.

Michigan State 40 Rutgers 7 4:00 PM

So Rutgers on FOX eh?  How did that work out?  Can we just reform the Big East already?

Vanderbilt 42 Tennessee 24 4:00 PM

The Sadness Bowl.  Remember folks, we have seen history this season.  Arguably the worst Tennessee team ever.  And they aren’t even the Champions of Life anymore.  What a shitshow.

Saturday Primetime & Late Night

Oregon 69 Oregon State 10 7:00 PM

The Ducks scored 69 points.  Giggity.

Louisiana Tech 20 UTSA 6 7:30 PM

A surprisingly good game that was a close defensive battle.  Watching a team battle for their bowl lives on the final regular season weekend is always great to watch.  LaTech’s win pretty much put the nail in the 5-7 teams’ coffins for this season.

Clemson 34 South Carolina 10 7:30 PM

This wasn’t even close.  I think many were kind of hoping for more chaos after what we had seen the previous 48 hours.  It was not to be and Clemson should be #1 come Tuesday.

LSU 45 Texas A&M 21 7:30 PM

Kevin Sumlin’s last game at Texas A&M wasn’t a good one.  And can you call what Ed Orgeron has done in Baton Rouge this year a quiet 9-3?  You almost have to.  He has proven that he was probably the right guy for the job all along.

Stanford 38 Notre Dame 20 8:00 PM

Not quite the beatdown most people are calling this but it really wasn’t close.  At all.  Stanford pulled away and then heard about Washington pasting Washington State so now they get to go to the Pac-12 Championship.  Could they get in to the New Year’s Six with a win?  It’s not out of the realm of possibility.

Washington 41 Washington State 14 8:00 PM

What is Wazzu’s problem with Washington?  They seem to almost always fall flat in the Apple Cup.  And this was their chance to solidify a NY6 spot.  Instead they will be in a lesser bowl and might see their coach leave to go elsewhere.

BYU 30 Hawaii 20 9:00 PM

I honestly didn’t watch much of this game.  Both teams were worse than last year.  BYU’s fall from at least being an above-average team is stunning really.

Air Force 38 Utah State 35 10:15 PM

This ended up being a close game.  I will be honest…I went to bed just before 1:00 AM.  I was actually footballed out (and battling a bit of an illness).

Bowl eligibility

The following teams clinched bowl eligibility this past weekend:

Temple

Florida State (kind of…they are almost assured a win against ULM on Saturday so they might as well be included here)

Duke

Texas Tech

Purdue

Middle Tennessee

Louisiana Tech

Buffalo

UCLA

Utah

And UL-Lafayette and New Mexico State can clinch this Saturday.  Good lord.  Well I guess my bowl projections past the CFP and NY6 are going to change a bit.  Plus this basically eliminates any 5-7 team from playing in a bowl game.  By my count, at least one 6-6 team will not be invited to the party.  Again, I will reiterate my bowl plans and that this should happen starting next season.  Just sayin’.

Coaching Carousel

Can you hear the circus music (in your head)?  I know I can.  The coaching carousel is always a bit wacky but this is bordering on absurd now.

It started with Chip Kelly being hired as coach at UCLA.  We knew it would start a domino effect.  We didn’t realize that the dominoes would be covered in gasoline and set on fire.  Here’s what has happened since then (these are in no particular order):

  • Many Florida fans thought Kelly was going to Gainesville.  When that didn’t happen they made an awesome hire but getting Dan Mullen to move over from Mississippi State.  Now a huge opening at an SEC school that might get a great Group of Five coach.
  • Bret Bielema was fired basically on the field after the Hogs’ loss on Black Friday.  Pathetic.  You couldn’t do it the next day?  It will be interesting to see who the new AD and head coach will be there because they have a major image cleanup to do.
  • Texas A&M, not surprisingly, shitcanned Kevin Sumlin.  Other than the Manziel years he didn’t quite get to the spot where many Aggie faithful thought he’d be.  But it looks like he may end up in Tempe because…
  • Arizona State fired Todd Graham.  Why?  Couldn’t be because of this year.  They did well.  The previous two not so much and it felt like he would had to have had a better shot at the Pac-12 South to keep his job for next season.
  • Matt Luke had the interim tag taken off at Ole Miss.  Interesting.  If he wins 8 or more games next season (which is entirely possible) this will be considered one of the best coaching moves of 2017.
  • Mike Riley was fired at Nebraska.  Again, not surprising.  Let’s get the Scott Frost takes going now!
  • Kliff Kingsbury was…NOT fired at Texas Tech.  That win over Texas probably saved his job.  Next year the leash will be much shorter.  I think seven wins at least or he’s a goner.
  • Kansas also did not fire their head coach.  Why?  Who knows.  I think it’s time to seriously consider bringing Mark Mangino back.  Who cares if he’s a shitbag.
  • Ty Detmer was let go as offensive coordinator at BYU.  Yeah because the offense was the only problem.  Right.
  • David Bailiff was let go by Rice.  Not a surprise.  The Owls were awful this year and hadn’t been consistent in the past few years under Bailiff.
  • Joey Jones is gone at South Alabama.  He couldn’t build off that bowl game appearance and has since been passed by almost every team in the Sun Belt save Coastal Carolina (who’s new) and Texas State.

So who’s going where now?  Well let’s just say the hiring season started with a bang…if by bang you mean nuclear bomb explosion:

  • Tennessee hired Greg Schiano.  Or tried to.  People literally went fucking crazy in Knoxville.  Hell, even the wrestler Kane (who may go by Mayor Kane soon enough) chimed in saying it probably wasn’t a good idea to hire ol’ Greg.  Why?  People said he knew more than he told when he was at Penn State about the goings-on of one Jerry Sandusky.  Other people ripped on other issues that have happened with Schiano at the helm.  You want to know the real reason?  It’s because he was average, at best, as a head coach.  Derek Dooley would be a better hire than this guy.  If they need a defensive coordinator, by all means, give the guy a shot but not as a head coach.  Some guys just aren’t meant to be the main man.  So now Tennessee is back to the drawing board.

Potential coaches on the move and where they could go:

  • Mike Leach – A lot of people in Knoxville want Leach to coach the Volunteers.  Whether he wants to go there is a different story.
  • Mike Norvell – This is the next big thing (along with Scott Frost) in college coaching.  Tennessee would be a good fit but don’t be surprised if Mississippi State gets him now that their spot is open.
  • Scott Frost – He is almost a shoo-in to go to Nebraska.
  • Jeff Brohm – What he has done at Purdue has been spectacular.  Whether he would be a fit in the SEC is another story.  Arkansas might be the only fit here.
  • Kevin Sumlin – Looks like he is heading to Arizona State.
  • Lane Kiffin – Isn’t he going to be the coach of every team that needs a coach.  Either him or…
  • Jon Gruden.

I am sure there are more possibilities but I don’t feel like listing them at this time.  Tomorrow I will have my bowl projections up then it’s back to the normal college schedule on Thursday, NFL schedule on Friday bit.  Enjoy your week everyone!

CLANGA! – Week 10 College Football Recap

miss-state-more-cowbelljpg-ba0f5017464db3ca

Yes a lot happened this past weekend in the college football world.  But not a whole lot of it was surprising.  Maybe the margin of some victories but other than that, nothing earth-shattering.  Except for what happened in Starkville.  Mississippi State’s upset of Texas A&M was monumental.  The Aggies were ranked 4th in the first College Football Playoff rankings which we all know mean absolutely sweet fuck all at this point.  But still, the Bulldogs will be one of very few SEC teams to not go bowling this season so this was a huge upset.  It also vindicates Washington…sort of I guess.  I still think they would have made the CFP anyway if they won out regardless of anything else happening.  Maybe that’s just me who knows.

Molto Recap-o

  • I was starting to think that LSU might actually do it. They might beat Alabama.  But once Bama started driving for their first touchdown I had that feeling it was over.  Did you?  I’m sure you did too.  We have all seen this story too often with the Crimson Tide.  At least we got one time where Saban yelled openly at Kiffin.  That was nice.
  • Michigan, Clemson, and Washington left no doubt that they all feel that they deserve to be in the College Football Playoff. Michigan especially is putting up points at a ridiculous clip.  Even if I watch it live (and I did watch part of the trainwreck against Rutgers live), it gets boring after a while.  Nothing against them or the Tigers and Huskies.  You have to win and look good doing it as we are in November now and everything is looked at a lot closer.
  • Speaking of beatdowns, holy shit did Ohio State smack Nebraska all over the field. This wasn’t even close.  Also glad to see Tommy Armstrong wasn’t too seriously injured.  At the time it looked really bad but he came out later on in the game to cheer his teammates on.
  • Wake Forest is now bowl-eligible. Good for them.  Dave Clawson deserves something big for what he has done with this Demon Deacons team.
  • Baylor lost big to TCU at home. The Committee has to be very pleased about this since the last thing they want is to put Baylor in either a CFP game or a New Year’s Six bowl.  The Bears losing makes it easier.  One more loss will almost definitely put the Bears out of contention for any major bowl.
  • Florida is still somehow in the driver’s seat for the SEC East title. Georgia’s victory over Kentucky kept the Wildcats from taking the lead in the division which would have been hilarious if you asked me.  Next week, the Gators host WILL MUSCHAMP! for the first time as head coach of South Carolina.  Will be VERY interesting if the Gamecocks pull off the upset.  All this also keeps Tennessee inexplicably in the race to get their asses handed to them by Alabama in early December.
  • Lamar Jackson continues to look Heisman-esque heading into November after another seven touchdown performance against Boston College. Problem is they control nothing the rest of the way.  With Houston falling off a cliff, the Cardinals have no opportunity for another big win.  All that means is they need teams above them to lose for them to have any hope of a College Football Playoff berth.
  • Watch out for Penn State. They run the table, they could win the Big Ten East meaning the CFP would be in a bit of chaos.
  • Worst overall conference? That’s easy.  Conference USA is an absolute mess.  Other than Western Kentucky there is not a single good team really.  It’s nice to see Old Dominion going bowling for the first time and Charlotte making some moves up the ladder but other than that it has been a lot of disappointment.  They aren’t looking a whole lot better than the Sun Belt these days and the MAC has overtaken them in the Group of Five ladder.
  • Navy holds on to beat Notre Dame. Pretty much clinches a losing season for the Irish since I can’t see them winning their last three.  Brian Kelly will be on the hottest of hot seats next season in South Bend, that is for sure.
  • Chad Kelly, unfortunately, is done with college football as he suffered a torn ACL during Ole Miss’ win over Georgia Southern. It will be interesting to see how this affects his draft status as he is considered one of the better quarterbacks available in the 2017 NFL draft.

So there we go.  Honestly, other than the Aggies’ loss, nothing huge happened that really affected the top end of the college football world.  Bama and tOSU won like everyone thought they would (although the Buckeyes’ win was much bigger than many, including myself, thought it would be).  The other top teams won big as well.  This coming week should start the true separation of the contenders from the pretenders.

Finally, a quick look at the Bossman Top 25:

#1 Alabama
#2 Clemson
#3 Michigan
#4 Ohio State
#5 Washington
#6 Wisconsin
#7 Louisville
#8 Auburn
#9 Oklahoma
#10 West Virginia
#11 Western Michigan
#12 Penn State
#13 North Carolina
#14 Texas A&M
#15 Oklahoma State
#16 Utah
#17 Florida State
#18 Nebraska
#19 Colorado
#20 LSU
#21 Virginia Tech
#22 Florida
#23 Washington State
#24 Baylor
#25 Boise State

HOT TAKE TIME (sound the sirens).  Yes I have Ohio State ahead of Washington.  No, I am not an asshole…most of the time.  Washington has beaten…Utah.  And, then #7 Stanford who is now not ranked.  That’s it.  They’ve looked impressive doing it but they need another good win.  Ohio State and Michigan are both in my top four with the full knowledge that unless complete chaos happens, only one will be standing (at most) at the end.  Meaning if the Huskies win out, they play for all the marbles.  Remember, they face USC next week and then Washington State for the Apple Cup on Black Friday.  There are the two other marquee regular season wins they need to cement their semi-final spot.  And hey, look at Western Michigan.  #11.  Yeah.  If they keep winning they are almost assured a spot in the Top 10, something even Northern Illinois didn’t do in that one year that Jordan Lynch was there and everyone was so amazed at this MAC powerhouse.  You member Jordan Lynch and that NIU team?  I member.

Tomorrow I will have my short NFL recap, a still-somewhat-way-too-early bowl projection post, then back to the bump n’ grind with the CFB schedule on Thursday.  Have a great week everyone.

Biggest Games of the 2015 College Football season – Part FOUR!

The final post on the most important games is upon us.  And if history tells us anything, at least one of these weeks (other than the final one) should be an awesome one.

Week 11

Georgia at Auburn – Make no mistake about it…Alabama is still the class of the SEC.  Saying that, this match here could determine which team can make a run at the SEC’s spot in the CFP (assuming they only get one).  And no…no Fire Mark Richt countdown this year.  Part of that is UGA should be really good.  Part of it is there are so many other coaches on the hot seat it isn’t even funny…OK it is a little bit.  (6:30, specialty pack)

Oklahoma at Baylor – Hey, remember last year when The Fighting Art Briles kicked Boomer Sooner’s ass?  Don’t expect that again, even if it’s at Baylor’s stunning new stadium on the Brazos.  No way Big Game Bob takes this game lightly this year as this could very well be for the Big XII crown (unless TCU has something to say about it).  (7:30, FOX)

Oregon at Stanford – Stanford was not your normal Stanford last season.  They should be much improved.  Also, I can’t see any way where the Ducks run roughshod through the Pac-12 now with Super Mariota gone.  This, combined with OU-Baylor, makes for a good set of primetime games for the non-specialty pack people (also known as “The People Who Are Saving Money”).  (8:00, ABC)

Arkansas at LSU – Another time where CBS has two games (this only happens two times a season).  I guess a lot has to do with how good these two programs are doing this season.  The worst pair gets the noon game and a Carter Blackburn special.  I am giving the Tide and the Bulldogs the edge for now but it could easily flip-flop (although I could see Bama being steaming mad at being “relegated” to the noon game).  (Noon, CBS)

Alabama at Mississippi State– The other half of the CBS doubleheader conundrum.  I’m leaning towards Verne and Gary heading to Starkville for MORE COWBELL! and also some football mixed in.  Plus it’s Evil Saban so he usually tries to get his way.  (3:30, CBS)

Virginia Tech at Georgia Tech – Battle of the Techs on a weekday night!  Beamer’s Boys (grandkids?  Great-grandkids?) need to step it up big time.  The last couple years have shown they have dropped down to the ACC mid-card and Paul Johnson’s Option Junkies have proven they are upper echelon (at least in the ACC).  (Thursday, 7:30, TSN1)

Other candidates: Utah at Arizona (10:00, specialty pack), BYU at Missouri (Noon, TSN1), Maryland at Michigan State (7:15, specialty pack), Minnesota at Iowa (8:00, Big Ten Network)

Week 12

Michigan State at Ohio State – In my opinion, this is the game of the year.  So watch both teams have three losses by the time they get to this one and it screws up my entire schedule prediction.  Anywho…I am almost positive one of these teams (at least) will be undefeated.  If both are, then this is the only game you will hear about…on ESPN.  (8:00, ABC)

USC at Oregon – I will ask again…will we see the so-called “real” USC this season or are we all going to be disappointed (with Trojan fans and alumni being VERY disappointed).  This could be a tough one regardless since Autzen Stadium is one of the toughest stadiums to be a visiting team in (I would argue only Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge is tougher).  A chance for Sark to get his first statement game here.  (3:30, ABC/TSN2)

TCU at Oklahoma – Remember what I said about the Baylor-Oklahoma game last week deciding the Big XII crown?  Well it’s more of a round-robin between those two teams and TCU (as TCU hosts Baylor the following week).  TCU stomped a hole in Oklahoma last season (as did Baylor) so the Stoops boys have to rebound yet again.  There won’t be any calls for Bob Stoops’ job since he’s there until he retires or dies on the sideline.  It just may get a bit tougher for him in Norman. (7:30, FOX)

LSU at Ole Miss – The first SEC game of the week ends up as the fourth most important game?  Tells you how important this week is in college football (until we get to the next one).  Last year, The Hat and his Tigers pulled off a close Magnolia Bowl victory in a game that, despite being close, wasn’t exactly exciting to watch.  The scene shifts to Oxford for this one and I am sure Hugh Freeze will get his Rebs up for this one considering there is a chance that one of these teams will need a win here to keep any CFP or NYS hopes alive.  (3:30, CBS)

Baylor at Oklahoma State – TRAP GAME!  The Cowboys and their head man Mike Gundy (who’s a MAN!) have had quite a few of these games in the past.  Games where they get to play spoiler.  The Pokes could destroy the Big XII’s chances with a win here and Baylor will desperately need momentum going into their huge showdown in Fort Worth the next Friday.  (3:30, FOX)

Mississippi State at Arkansas – Two years ago, if someone had told me that this would be one of the games of the week I would have laughed.  Seriously.  This should be an interesting one since I don’t know if a spot in the New Year’s Six would be on the line here or not.  There is a remote possibility but it’s tough to say in the SEC West minefield.  (Noon, TSN1)

Other candidates: Arizona at Arizona State (3:30, TSN3), Boston College vs. Notre Dame (in Boston) (7:30, NBC), East Carolina at UCF (Thursday, 7:30, TSN1), Toledo at Bowling Green (Tuesday, 8:00, specialty pack)

Week 13

Baylor at TCU – And now we get to the best week in college football this season.  And what better way to start it out on Black Friday (as far as I know) is with the final part of the round-robin merry-go-round roller coaster fun-time Big XII tournament of champions (with no guarantee of a College Football Playoff spot).  My guess is once this game is over, we will have a very good idea if the Big XII will have a CFP representative or if they will be on the phone with the ADs at Cincinnati and BYU.  (Friday, 7:30, specialty pack)

Alabama at Auburn – There is no possible way CBS is passing up the Iron Bowl this year.  In retrospect, a pretty huge error that ESPN fully (and I mean fully) capitalized on.  Not gonna happen.  Wouldn’t it be just a bit ironic if the both the Tide and Tigers had at least two losses coming into this one?  (3:30, CBS)

USC at UCLA – Victory Bell time!  Or at least the California version of the Victory Bell since I think there’s about 9 different victory bell games.  And hey, this one is very relevant (at least now in June it seems to be).  There is a potential for the Pac-12 South title and a College Football Playoff berth to be on the line here.  I can’t see ABC picking anything else here.  (8:00, ABC/TSN2)

Georgia at Georgia Tech – A little Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.  Last year’s game was awesome and I expect this one to be no different.  The Dawgs will not take the Ramblin’ Wreck lightly (not that they did last year).  The only issue with non-conference games this late in the season is that has very little impact on bowl games (except the CFP or New Year’s Six).  (Noon, TSN3)

Texas A&M at LSU – This game may be relegated to the SEC Network because of all the good games in the SEC this week.  Saying that, I could see it switch spots with the Egg Bowl (which I have slated for evening on ESPN/TSN1) so I am not quite sure at this point whether you will need the specialty pack or not to see the John Chavis Bowl.  (4:00, specialty pack)

Ohio State at Michigan– The Game.  This HAS to be better than last year’s version.  You remember right?  It was a blowout from the opening whistle and J.T. Barrett was lost for the season (although it did end up giving us three games of Cardale goodness).  With Captain Insano at the helm in Ann Arbor now, this should be a fun one to watch…even if it is just to watch his tirades and intensity.  (Noon, ABC)

Other candidates: Ole Miss at Mississippi State (7:45, TSN1), Florida State at Florida (3:30, specialty pack), Clemson at South Carolina (3:30, TSN3), Wisconsin at Minnesota (3:30, ABC/TSN5)

Week 14

The final week of the season obviously has the conference championship games.  This season, we add the American conference to that family.  If Navy somehow makes it into the American conference championship undefeated, it sets up a very interesting situation (and one that ESPN is probably salivating over).  Win that and it will probably make the Army-Navy game the most watched in a LONG time.  Texas faces off against Baylor although this may be a formality if Baylor has somehow come out of the TCU/Oklahoma gauntlet unscathed.  The Sun Belt will also crown their champ and I know that soon enough (maybe next season) they will have their own conference championship since they know they are leaving money on the table by not having one.  I still believe that if one of the ACC, Big Ten, or Pac-12 was smart, they would move their conference championship to Noon so they would be the lone Power Five conference championship at that time.  Instead we have a logjam in the primetime slot.  Good planning idiots.

So that ends the posts on the most important games this season.  67 days away from the first game of the season.  Still feels way too far away for me.  Next up will be the breakouts by network as I show the CBS, ABC, and FOX schedules as of this point.  Then I will be “playing” the schedule out to see where my predictions will lie (obviously they will be somewhat shitty but I don’t care).

Biggest Games of the 2015 College Football season – Part TWO!

And now it’s time for part two as we start getting into conference play (the more I talk about college football, the more I can’t wait for the season to start!).  And another reminder that most of these times and networks are not confirmed, they are just best guesses (with a lot depending on how good or bad a team is).

Week 4

USC at Arizona State – The yearly “Hey USC is going to be a contender” conversation is in full swing.  Will they go full-on Pete Carroll or full-on Lane Kiffin this season?  Either way it’s damn entertaining to fans (except for USC fans…that has to be at least a bit frustrating). A bit of an odd time for this one on FOX (at this point).  (8:30, FOX)

Mississippi State at Auburn – Hey, remember last year’s game in a monsoon in Starkville?  The one where Gus Malzahn decided to inexplicably try out the passing attack when the ball was wetter than the co-eds who hang around Gronk?  Fun times.  This year it moves to Auburn where who knows what the hell might happen considering what’s happened at Jordan-Hare over the past few seasons.  (7:00, specialty pack)

Utah at Oregon – For anyone who doesn’t think the Pac-12 is gaining on the SEC for best conference in the land honours, you might want to think again.  Two of the top three games this week are Pac-12 ones.  Another early test for the Ducks A.M. (after Mariota).  Kyle Whittingham always has his Utes ready to go and is hoping for a minor upset here.  (10:30, specialty pack)

UCLA at Arizona – Make that three out of the top four.  There are so many contending teams in the Pac-12 that any team that doesn’t get to at least 8 wins will feel like a failure (and it’s almost certain that at least one team won’t).  Jim Mora Jr. is hoping for the playoffs (PLAYOFFS??!?!?) for his Bruins team post-Brett Hundley.  Same goes for our ol’ pal RichRod down in Tucson.  Some early Pac-12 elimination game excitement so far this week.  (3:30, specialty pack)

Texas A&M at Arkansas – Ok is it starting to feel like there are only two actual conferences in college football?  Now that Bret Bielema has got his Hogs playing some strong BielemaBall, the SEC West has become an absolute minefield.  No team is an easy out.  Honestly, it would not surprise me to see the Aggies fall to the basement (and I use that term loosely since basement could still mean seven wins) in the division this season.  (3:30, CBS)

Tennessee at Florida – It’s official…only two conferences in college football.  Amazing how dominant these two conferences seem to be (which allows good programs like Ohio State to go almost unnoticed for most of a season).  The winner here will be the team that is officially back in the SEC hunt.  Loser probably has to wait until next season.  (Noon, TSN1)

Other candidates: Georgia Tech at Duke (12:30, WSBK), BYU at Michigan (3:30, ABC), UCF at South Carolina (3:30, specialty pack), Stanford at Oregon State (4:30, FOX)

Week 5

Alabama at Georgia – If it wasn’t for Michigan State-Ohio State, Oregon-Michigan State, and some of the later games in the year, this would be considered the game of the year.  Right now it’s the SEC game of the year.  If Mark Richt can somehow get his Dawgs to step up for this one, they immediately become the favourite to represent the SEC in the CFP.  (3:30, CBS)

Notre Dame at Clemson – Dabo is sick of playing second fiddle to those damn Fighting Jimbos down in Tallahassee.  Beating a much-improved Irish team, at home, in primetime, would be a huge boost for this program.  They still have to go through the Noles to win the ACC but beating quasi-sometime-when-they-feel-like-it Notre Dame…just invite the damn Irish in already!  (8:00, ABC)

Arizona State at UCLA – This is the kind of game that used to be called by the amazing Keith Jackson (and that many on the east coast wouldn’t get).  Todd Graham brings his Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl to see if they can upend the Bruins in the uber-competitive Pac-12 South.  And lucky us, it isn’t Pac-12 After Dark (at this point)!  (7:00, specialty pack)

Texas at TCU – It still feels kind of weird to consider the Longhorns only the fourth best team in Texas (behind TCU, Baylor, and A&M).  The Charlie Strong Termination Watch is on this season.  Not that I like it.  I think Strong is a fantastic coach but he walked into a somewhat bad situation in Austin.  I don’t think anyone could have made this team a contender again this fast.  However, this is all a moot point if he can get Texas to beat Gary Patterson’s Horned Frogs on the road.  Not an easy feat.  (3:30, ABC/TSN2)

Ole Miss at Florida – I’m back and forth as to whether this still ends up on the SEC Network.  At this point I say yes even though some games on ESPN networks may not be as sexy as this one.  See, there are pros AND cons to having your own network (although I am sure they don’t give two shits about Canadian viewership).  Anyways, an improved Gators team should make this a fun one…we hope.  (4:00, specialty pack)

Mississippi State at Texas A&M – One of your Heisman contenders starts the week here.  Dak Prescott could make huge waves if (and only if), the Bulldogs are contenders.  When’s the last time a Heisman winner has been on a mediocre team?  Answer: Tim Brown in 1987.  Notre Dame went 8-4 that year.  Every year since, the Heisman winner’s team has won at least 9 games.  So yeah, if Dak wants some hardware, the Bulldogs better help him deliver.  (Thursday, 7:30, specialty pack)

Other candidates: Arizona at Stanford (4:00, don’t even ask), West Virginia at Oklahoma (Thursday, 9:00, again don’t ask), South Carolina at Missouri (7:30, specialty pack), Iowa at Wisconsin (Noon, TSN2)

Week 6

Arkansas at Alabama – The Hogs came within a hair of upsetting the Tide last year at home.  It’s not that the Tide played well because they didn’t but neither did Team Bielema.  Bama is still Bama under Evil Saban but the Hogs are a more cohesive unit this year than last so expect another very highly contested matchup between two teams who could be both ranked highly by this point of the season.  (7:00, specialty pack)

Georgia Tech at Clemson – Remember what I said about Clemson’s road to the ACC crown still going through Tallahassee.  We need to modify that.  There’s still the matter of those pesky, option-offense fools from Atlanta.  Paul Johnson seems to always sneak into contention with the Rambling Wreck.  Not so this year.  The targets on their backs are huge so don’t expect Dabo to take this team lightly this time around.  (3:30, ABC)

TCU at Kansas State – As much as the game against Texas the previous week may be important, this is the game where TCU can really earn some respect.  K-State has been better than average pretty much every year when Papa Smurf Snyder has been at the helm.  His Wildcat teams have a history of making things very difficult for the top teams in the Big XII.  It’s not a matter of if.  It’s a matter of when it will happen this season.  (Thursday, 7:00, TSN1)

LSU at South Carolina – Is the HBC ever going to get the Cocks over the hump?  It seems like the best chances may have come and gone but this is the kind of game they desperately need to win if they want to contend for at least a spot in the New Year’s Six.  LSU, on the other hand, seems to be on the cusp of something special, but they too have trouble getting over the hump.  Then again, that could be the fact the SEC West is an absolute gauntlet year in and year out.  Yet another good game to watch.  (Noon, specialty pack)

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas) – Ah the annual Red River SHOOTOUT! (Yes SHOOTOUT, not Rivalry, or Game, or Picnic, or Playdate)  For some reason, most of the last decade has seen one of the teams be mediocre and one be a contender.  This year, God willing, Big Game Bob and Senor Strong both have their teams near the top of the rankings.  Otherwise only an upset would make this game memorable (which has happened more often than it should have).   (Noon, ABC/TSN4)

Miami at Florida State – OK at least this time I can’t see the U being blown out of the water.  Florida State should come back to the pack a bit which allows now-sophomore Brad Kaaya a chance at a statement game in primetime.  A win here and Al Golden probably keeps his job through the 2018 season.  (8:00, ABC)

Other candidates: Wisconsin at Nebraska (3:30, specialty pack), Washington at USC (Thursday, 10:30, TSN1), Maryland at Ohio State (Noon, TSN3), Boise State at Colorado State (7:00, CBS Sports Network)

Alright, we are almost halfway through the games.  Sorry if some of these didn’t make sense.  Did you know sleep is important?  I am starting to figure this out.  74 days until the season opens people!

Week 7 College Football Recap – Sponsored by MORE COWBELL!

morecowbell

OK so after the previous week (AKA The Greatest Week of College Football History) anything was going to be a letdown.  And for the most part it was.  There were a few bright spots and it is college football so of course I was going to watch as much of it as I could (on PVR for me this past weekend of course).  Highlights included:

  • Cowbells and Rain – What a game down in Starkville.  And if you didn’t think so before, you have to now…the Bulldogs are for real.  A true national title contender.  A true Heisman contender.  This proved that Mississippi State is a force (and I still can’t wait for that Egg Bowl…should be massive).  I did notice though that Gus Malzahn has trouble with weather.  See, it was a god damn torrential downpour and he’s calling post patterns and receiver double cuts and shit like that.  It was pouring…why in the hell would you not carry the rock as much as possible before it eased up a bit?  It’s like he lost his mind.  Didn’t make sense to me.
  • Don’t forget the Rebs – Yeah can’t sleep on Ole Miss.  To be honest, it was one of the most boring games I recorded this weekend.  Texas A&M looked completely outmatched and the game was over by about the five minute mark.  If you had told me that it will come down to which Mississippi team is better for a spot in the CFP semi-finals, I would have laughed…a lot.
  • Florida State looks meh – Was it just me or did they look positively just OK?  Mediocre even.  They should have destroyed the Orange and just didn’t put them away.  I get that their schedule isn’t what MSU or Ole Miss goes through but still.
  • Drunk Uncle Dana is celebrating! – What a finish to the West Virginia-Texas Tech game (that none of us saw).  The Mountaineers could finally be climbing the Big XII mountain for the first time since they joined the conference.  As for Kute Kliff, he may be opening Christmas presents at home if he doesn’t get his Red Raiders on the right path.
  • I went to the fridge, came back, and Baylor put up a 21-spot – It seemed that fast.  Worst part is, I added thirty minutes to the end of the recording and it STILL finished at the 7 minute mark of the fourth quarter.  I wish cable companies would allow entire games to be recorded, regardless of length.  But yeah, what a comeback.  Insane.  So now you have arguably Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Baylor as your top three college football teams.  Yes, college football has officially jumped the shark.
  • Red River Rivalry no fun for Oklahoma – The Sooners should have beat Texas handily.  Style points count now more than ever.  It looked like a struggle at the Cotton Bowl.  They are not doing themselves any favours.  They will need to blow through the rest of their schedule to assure their spot in final four.
  • Minnesota and Iowa: Quiet, but Deadly – Both of these teams are 5-1.  Hell, put Kentucky in that club too.  Three teams who are quietly looking like 8 or 9-win teams this season.  Amazing, especially in the Wildcats’ case.  You cannot take these programs lightly anymore.
  • OK so maybe UGA still has a shot – Wow.  Never saw that coming.  I figured it would be close.  I could still see the Dawgs winning but not like that.  They tore Mizzou a new one.  It was tough to even watch the highlights.  But don’t crown them as champs yet.  And don’t be surprised if everyone sleeps on Kentucky and allows them to at least have a shot at going to Atlanta (as far fetched as that may sound).
  • Undefeated teams…where did they go? – Remember a couple weeks back I said by Halloween there would be only 8 or 9 undefeated teams left?  Well in two weeks we lost more than 10 undefeated teams.  There are only 6 left.  College football’s insane season just continues.
  • Hey.  UMass won! – Yes they did.  And they did it easily.  I really do feel sorry for the Minutemen since they are a few minutes away from being 4-3 instead of 1-6.  That’s the way it goes sometimes.  You may not always start strong but you have to finish strong.
  • Notre Dame may have been exposed – Maybe.  To let up 43 to a middle-of-the-road North Carolina team at home doesn’t say much about your defense.  And they have Florida State coming in on Saturday for one of the games-of-the-year we have sprinkled throughout the season.  Something tells me the Cinderella story (of sorts) ends in six days.
  • A reminder of how poor college football can be – A completely missed extra point by Arkansas was the difference in their loss to Alabama.  Says a lot about how much the Tide has struggled this season but it also outlines the fact that more and more coaches have little to no faith in their kickers.  And why should they?  Only a handful of kickers are good enough to give them a shot from almost anywhere.  The rest range from relatively dependable to horrible.  Then again, I hear the Detroit Lions need a kicker.

So now we are at the halfway mark of the season.  The silly scheduling season begins.  Tomorrow night is the first Tuesday night game of the year as Louisiana’s Ragin Cajuns go to San Marcos to face Texas State.  This Sun Belt game is on the specialty pack for those who have it.  Every week from now until the end of the season, will have at least one Tuesday or Wednesday night game which is great since it’s just more college football (and what could be wrong with that?  Nothing is the answer).  I will have the rest of the college football schedule up on Wednesday, followed by the NFL schedule on Thursday.

Update: Louisiana-Texas State will be on TSN5 tonight instead of the specialty pack.
