I have a proposal – Week 11 College Football Recap

You probably know this already but Chad Morris has been fired as head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.  No surprise there.  Arkansas has been awful this season.  No denying that.  While pretty much every other team not named Vanderbilt is improving in the SEC, the Razorbacks are getting worse somehow.  Chad Morris was supposed to be the savior (somewhat) for this program and at least get it back to playing in bowl games every season if not actually competing for the SEC West title.  But in what may be the worst coaching job in the state since John L. Smith was brought in for a short (and disastrous) period of time, nothing went right in Fayetteville (and sometimes Little Rock).  Their shellacking at the hands of Western Kentucky on Saturday was the straw that broke the camel’s back.  Not saying Morris would have been back next year since he probably wouldn’t have been but there has to be a huge shot to the ego to be fired during a season.  Basically the school is saying you aren’t even good enough to coach this already shitty team for the rest of the season.  You are so bad that we have to replace you now.

Earlier this season, Rutgers finally shitcanned Chris Ash.  It was about a season or so too late but at least they finally did it.  So I have a proposal here that I think may have been said before but hear me out.  As much as people say there are too many bowl games, people obviously watch them since they usually get more viewers than anything else on at that time, other than the NFL or World Juniors.  So why not add another postseason game?  Here’s what I think: have the two worst Power Five teams face off to figure out the bottom team of the year.  Arkansas vs. Rutgers!  Who says no?  And play it in a spot where there is a good chance of horrible weather like Montana.  Someone will broadcast it for sure.  And I will watch it.  Let’s make it happen!

Alright enough of Relegation Bowl 2019.  On to the recap of what was an amazingly crazy week of college football.  I can honestly say it was one of the most enjoyable weeks of college football this year.  My only hope is that the last few weeks of the regular season are just as good (if not better).

Recap

  • Minnesota had a nice win over Penn State in chilly conditions in Minneapolis in one of two battles of undefeated teams.  Row The Boat, indeed.  It was a historic victory for a program not known for playing big-time college football.  This means that the Golden Gophers’ hopes for the College Football Playoff are still alive.  And with Iowa, Northwestern and Wisconsin left on their sked, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Fighting Flecks are in the Top 4 come conference championship weekend.  As for PSU, they aren’t out of things yet but they have to win out and get a LOT of help.
  • Clemson clinched the ACC Atlantic with a relatively easy win over NC State in primetime.  It was actually a close game for all of like a minute and then the Tigers were off to the races in a horribly boring affair.  It was weird to see the primetime sked be so much worse than the earlier two timeslots but there we had it.  If you needed to get anything done on Saturday, that was probably your chance.
  • A very slow start for Georgia turned into a bit of a rout when they scored 27 unanswered on Missouri to pick up the win.  They still have two more big games against Auburn and Texas A&M coming up that could put other teams back in the SEC East race.  The Dawgs would have to lose both though and I honestly can’t see that happening.
  • Oh yeah there was a kind of big matchup down in Tuscaloosa.  Talk about an instant classic.  Two of the best coaches in the game.  Two of the best quarterbacks (although Tua was obviously in pain late in the game).  Two of the best offenses and defenses in the game.  And it was a great game.  LSU was way up by halftime but there was always that feeling that Alabama could come back.  And come back they did.  They made a game out of it with Tua Tagovailoa’s gutsy play.  But the Tigers were too much and Joe Burrow may have clinched the Heisman with his performance.  Yes it wasn’t under the lights but it was still an amazing game that will be remembered for a long time and may, dare I say it, knock Bama out of the College Football Playoff.
  • In Big XII news, Baylor BARELY beat TCU.  It was looking for a while there that the Horned Frogs had the Bears’ number.  The Bears needed a FG late and then some overtime heroics to win this one.  So I just assume the Bears fans’ blood pressure is through the roof for most of this one and will continue to be until they lose (if they lose).
  • Illinois was down 28-3 to Michigan State and all the hope for Illini fans seemed to be draining.  Then they started the biggest comeback in program history, about to tie up the game after a touchdown aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand they miss the extra point.  Oh no.  But they persevered and scored late again to pick up the massive win over the Spartans and become bowl-eligible for the first time in five long years.  Amazing how keeping Lovie Smith (and his glorious beard) on for another year (after really not deserving another year) has led to hope inside this program.
  • Appalachian State ended up with what was not really an upset as they beat South Carolina in a close one.  Can you imagine what would be going on right now if App State hadn’t looked like shit against Georgia Southern?  You would have been seeing the Mountaineers as a good possibility as the first ever Sun Belt team to get to the New Year’s Six.  Now?  They need some help.
  • Could the Oklahoma freakin’ Sooners somehow get back into the CFP race?   They sure could.  I mean their game against Iowa State was pretty tough to watch and they struggled at times but they won and in the end that’s what matters…kind of.  They are just lucky that ISU went to the Mack Brown School of Two Point Conversion Plays.  They need to figure out that defense though as they can’t play like that against Baylor this Saturday or otherwise it will be lights out.  Then again, Baylor struggled to score against TCU so…who knows.
  • Your 2019 Ohio State Buckeyes are a God damned juggernaut.  They mopped the floor with Maryland dropping SEVENTY-THREE POINTS on them.  Their path to the Big Ten Championship is now very simple.  Don’t lose to Penn State and they will basically win the Big Ten East and head to Indianapolis.
  • So what can we make of the Tennessee Volunteers this season?  They looked OK, I guess, against Kentucky and were able to eek out a win.  They’ve been all over the place this season with some great games and truly awful ones.  Amazingly enough, through all this, the Vols are one win away from being bowl-eligible and maybe, just maybe, they are back to building something good in Knoxville.
  • UCF lost to Tulsa.  No New Year’s Six for you!
  • There was one more game with two ranked teams going at it and it was a close one as well.  Iowa and Wisconsin played some classic Big Ten West football against each other and very few watched it because it was on at the same time as LSU-Alabama.  Couldn’t this have been a night game?  Anyway, the Hawkeyes missed on the two-point conversion late and Paul Chryst’s Badgers survived and now remain the only real challenger to Minnesota in the division.
  • Wow Boise State is making it very difficult to give them the New Year’s Six spot.  Or is it that Boise State is making it tough to keep them out of the New Year’s Six spot?  Probably a bit of both.  They probably should have lost that game against Wyoming but somehow, someway, pulled out the win in overtime.  They are still right in the thick of the hunt for the Group of Five spot and it would not surprise me to see them get it if they can blow through the rest of their schedule.
  • Oh Kansas State.  It’s like they couldn’t handle the rarified air of the Top 25.  I get that it’s been a struggle since 109-year-old Bill Snyder left the program but hopefully Chris Klieman has them back to where they had been during the Snyder era.  And Texas is back……in the Top 25 (I think).
  • Florida beat Vanderbilt.  In other news, sometimes we get snow in the winter.
  • Wake Forest had a ton of trouble with the Bud Foster Hokie defense and now will be out of the Top 25 (I think).  So who in the hell is going to go to the Orange Bowl out of the ACC?  It’s going to be an unranked Virginia I think.  Sad.  I think it’s about time to cut back a bit on the bowl tie-ins since that is ridiculous.
  • Finally, SMU put up almost 60 points on East Carolina.  Unfortunately, East Carolina put up a bit more than 50 on the Mustangs.  Not good for a team that is hoping for a wing and a prayer and a chance to somehow get to the AAC Championship.

We are now getting into the real important part of the season.  OK not as important as American Thanksgiving Footballgasm time but still important.  This past weekend, though, led to some big changes in the polls.  That’s the way these things go in November.  Here’s my Top 25:

#1 LSU
#2 Ohio State
#3 Georgia
#4 Clemson
#5 Utah
#6 Minnesota
#7 Alabama
#8 Oregon
#9 Baylor
#10 Oklahoma
#11 Auburn
#12 Florida
#13 Penn State
#14 Michigan
#15 Wisconsin
#16 Notre Dame
#17 Cincinnati
#18 Memphis
#19 Texas
#20 Boise State
#21 SMU
#22 Iowa
#23 Indiana
#24 Navy
#25 Texas A&M

Something has happened at the top and more is to come.  Unless something weird happens, both LSU and Georgia won’t get to the CFP.  LSU is almost a shoo-in at this point unless they don’t just shit the bed but fill the bedroom with diarrhea.  Clemson wins out and they are essentially a lock.  Ohio State is the same.  I still think Ohio State blows it against Michigan though.  I am going to continue to drink the Kool-Aid and say Michigan will finally break the streak this season.  The most important thing here though?  Indiana is in the Top 25.  Every year it seems there has to be a basketball school in the Top 25.  Last year it was Kentucky.  The few years before that was Duke.  Lately, that is the case.  I would love to see Indiana win out and get in the conversation for the College Football Playoff because I like the discomfort of a team like that being in the mix.  The media, as much as they they say otherwise, do not want these non-traditional football powers in these big games.  Except for the ones who love controversy like it’s crack.

So this post is a day late so I won’t hype the Monday Night Football game (not that I ever hype it).  But last night’s game was great.  One of the best MNF games in a long time.  And now there are no undefeated teams.  The ’72 Dolphins can pop that champagne.

We got some MACtion tonight!  Eastern Michigan and Akron tussle starting at 6:00 on the specialty pack and Western Michigan faces off against Ohio starting at 6:30.  The games aren’t early because of the CFP Rankings Show.  It’s because the weather is supposed to be bad so they are starting the games an hour or so earlier than normal.  It is supposed to frigid in Ohio tonight so don’t expect to see packed stands there.  Then tomorrow night is another set of MACtion games both on the specialty pack: Northern Illinois-Toledo and Bowling Green-Miami-OH.

Tomorrow we got some bowl projections (which aren’t early anymore).  Thursday it’s another weekend-plus of college football and its TV schedule.  Finally, the NFL gets the sked treatment on Friday.  Enjoy your week (and the games) everyone!

The first domino has fallen – Week 6 College Football TV Schedule

Chris Ash will not be on the Rutgers sideline this Saturday.  Because he was shitcanned…finally.  He shouldn’t have even made it to the 2019 season but it is Rutgers so who knows.  Maybe they will go back to days of Scarlet Knight success and hire Greg Schiano.  I’m sure no one will complain.  But this means it’s the first domino to fall.  It is a wait to see who gets fired first and then other programs feel a bit better about firing their head coach rather than wait until the end of the season.  My prediction for the next coach fired?  Gotta go with Clay Helton but be on the lookout for Charlie Strong who is struggling big time at USF.

Let’s get right to the schedule shall we?  That’s the reason you’re here, right?  Not to read my hilarious quotes and witty banter.  I mean I tell myself you all enjoy it but in reality you just want the info.  I get it.  So here we go.

Thursday

US Canada
Georgia Southern at South Alabama 7:30 PM
Temple at East Carolina 8:00 PM

Technically these are college football games.  Technically.  Now watch them both be 50-47 shootouts.

Friday

US Canada
Dartmouth at Penn 7:00 PM
#18 UCF at Cincinnati 8:00 PM
New Mexico at San Jose State 10:00 PM

Three games on Friday night.  Huge, massive, colossal game in the American conference as the Knights-Bearcats game might give us the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six selection.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#6 Oklahoma at Kansas Noon
Maryland at Rutgers Noon
Tulane at Army Noon
Purdue at #12 Penn State Noon
TCU at Iowa State Noon
Kent State at #8 Wisconsin Noon
#14 Iowa at #19 Michigan Noon
#21 Oklahoma State at Texas Tech Noon
Utah State at #5 LSU Noon
Boston College at Louisville 12:30 PM

I would say it’s a huge deal to have a FOX tripleheader but it’s not anymore.  For most weeks of the season, this will be the case unless baseball rears its ugly head.  And now that we get FS1 (through FloSports) we get the whole FOX college football library or at least the library we care about.  FOX starts with a huge game this week.  A pretty smart idea to make the Noon game their main game since no other network will do that.  And with hype machine GUS JOHNSON on the call, it will at least sound exciting even if the game itself isn’t.  Other than that, there are a couple intriguing games like OSU-Tech and TCU-ISU in the Big XII.  Other than that?  Meh.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#11 Texas at West Virginia 3:30 PM
Illinois at Minnesota 3:30 PM
#7 Auburn at #10 Florida 3:30 PM
Air Force at Navy 3:30 PM
Virginia Tech at Miami 3:30 PM sp logo
Baylor at Kansas State 3:30 PM sp logo
Bowling Green at #9 Notre Dame 3:30 PM
Memphis at ULM 3:45 PM
North Carolina at Georgia Tech 4:00 PM
Northwestern at Nebraska 4:00 PM
Troy at Missouri 4:00 PM

It’s an OK schedule with one ridiculously huge game.  Auburn-Florida is the huge game in this timeslot.  Another test for the Tigers and if they pass it they have to be considered contenders and Gus Malzahn might get a lifetime contract that many fans will want rescinded if they lose the Iron Bowl later this year.  Northwestern-Nebraska is an oddly important Big Ten West game.  Loser is almost guaranteed to be eliminated from the division race.  Still don’t know which game TSN2 is showing but I am going to go with the assumption that they will continue with the ABC simulcast after doing the same at Noon.  Or at least I hope that’s what they do because when they move networks from one timeslot to the next it is so unwieldy.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
USF at UConn 7:00 PM
#3 Georgia at Tennessee 7:00 PM
#25 Michigan State at #4 Ohio State 7:30 PM
Tulsa at #24 SMU 7:30 PM
Vanderbilt at Ole Miss 7:30 PM
Pittsburgh at Duke 8:00 PM
California at #13 Oregon 8:00 PM

OK I have to explain USF-UConn in this timeslot.  This game is actually being played at Noon.  It will be seen on tape delay on CBSSN at 7.  The reason for this change in kickoff time is a safety precaution from the Department of Health over a mosquito-borne virus.  This is definitely a new one.  I have never seen anything like this before.  This will be tough because you will probably see the final score on the ticker at some point during the day.  Then again, it’s a UConn game so chances are it will be a blowout win by USF.  But it’s also 2019 USF so maybe this game will be close.  Who knows.  The rest of the games aren’t bad.  Cal-UO could be interesting and further the Pac-12’s descent into CFP hell.  Watch MSU keep it close with tOSU and Tennessee actually give UGA a game.  It feels like that kind of week.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
San Diego State at Colorado State 10:00 PM
#16 Boise State at UNLV 10:30 PM
#15 Washington at Stanford 10:30 PM

Not the greatest late night spread but Pac-12 After Dark could bring it yet again.  I’m sure Chris Petersen is pissed right off with being the late night window but who cares.  If only they had brought in the four teams from the Big XII this may have not been an issue.  Good job there Larry Scott!  The other two games probably won’t be close so either UW-Stanford ends up being a good Pac-12 After Dark-esque game or everyone can go to bed shortly after midnight.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Auburn at Florida (3:30, CBS) – Can Auburn shut the haters up with a win here?  Probably not.  But a win here would most definitely help.  Is Florida deserving of being in the Top 10?  Most would say no.  But they are there and the Miami win isn’t looking nearly as good so they need a defining win and this would be it.  I wouldn’t say this is easily the Game of the Week but I will give it the nod over the next game on the list.

Iowa at Michigan (Noon, FOX) – Michigan absolutely needs the win here.  One, they have looked a lot worse than anyone thought they would be.  Second, Jim Harbaugh’s future may hinge on a victory here.  And finally it’s on FOX’s Big Nude Saturday (shoutout to Jason Kirk of SBNation for this hilarious tweet a while back).  The Wolverines will essentially play themselves out of the New Year’s Six with a loss here (I think).  Oh yeah, Iowa is in this game as well and no one seems to care.

Michigan State at Ohio State (7:30, ABC) – Look.  I get it.  On paper this looks like a crazy mismatch.  But remember what Michigan State has done a couple times lately to Ohio State.  Don’t be surprised if Michigan State keeps this close or somehow wins it.  tOSU needs this game to continue to eventually convince The Committee that they belong in the Top 4 although with the Pac-12 being the Pac-12 that might not be much of a problem for them.

California at Oregon (8:00, FOX) – Who would have thought California would be in one of the top 5 games of the week?  Everyone put their hands down you dirty liars.  Cal stumbled against Arizona State but has looked good otherwise.  They could continue to stymie the Pac-12’s chances of being in the College Football Playoff.  Oregon wins this and their game in two weeks up in Seattle against Washington will be the most important game of the year in the Pac-12.

UCF at Cincinnati (Friday, 8:00, TSN2) – Friday night game on the GOTW list!  As I stated above this is probably not just the American conference Game of the Year but the Group of Five Game of the Year.  Huge, massive game and it’s good to see TSN has picked it up.  The winner here gets a leg up on Boise State, Memphis and Appalachian State in this G-5 race.

Honourable mention: Oklahoma State at Texas Tech (Noon, FloSports); Texas at West Virginia (3:30, ABC/TSN2); Utah State at LSU (Noon, TSN1)

Some gambling fun and games

My first three picks last weekend were garbage.  The rest were correct but still…ugh.  Anyway, more picks for you gambling heathens out there.

Auburn over Florida

LSU over Utah State

Air Force over Navy

Texas Tech over Oklahoma State (yeah going out on a limb here)

Texas over West Virginia

Oregon over California

Michigan over Iowa (I hope I don’t regret this)

Michigan State over Ohio State (yep…I’m going there)

Cincinnati over UCF (another upset pick)

Miami over Virginia Tech

Army over Tulane

I can’t see the schedules up anywhere past tonight.  I am kind of happy I don’t have to deal with this anymore (except for the purposes of this blog) but I have my own problems with IPTV.  Or more like problems most people are having with IPTV with many channels not working.  I keep telling myself “It’s cheaper than cable…just deal with it.”  Although that’s seriously tough at times.

Hey, hey some Thursday Night Football again.  We’ve had some pretty good games so far.  Last week’s game was great to watch.  We know that with FOX as part of this that the NFL will make sure there some good games on Thursdays.  There is some luck there as well mind you.  Just because two good teams face each other doesn’t mean we will have a good game.  But look at tonight.  We have a big NFC West showdown between the Rams and Seahawks.  Two good teams in what should be a good game.  Operative word being good.  That’s why they play the games.  I mean I don’t mind staying up after any college games are over to watch TNF if it’s a good game.  I will add that to the rest of the sleep deprivation I get during football season.

I will be live-tweeting most of Saturday (@TheBauceman).  I changed the Twitter handle to basically take the stupid 1978 out.  It was dumb when I made the account and it’s still dumb now.  Should be another fun Saturday.  Enjoy the games everyone!

So close, Mack. So close. – Week 5 College Football Recap

There are some that don’t understand the reasoning behind Mack Brown’s call near the end of the game.  I do, though.  Mack Brown is trying to build the North Carolina program back up.  Winning this game would have been huge for the team.  Was the playcall the best one?  Not really but that’s not the point here.  Chances are if they did go to overtime, it definitely favours Clemson.  Not saying the Heels couldn’t have pulled it out in OT but I like them going for it.  Take the risk.  Too many coaches play it safe and it’s more to save their own hides rather than make a statement.  I get that too but I wish more coaches would have a spine and take more risks…not a ton more, just a few more.

Other than that, was it a awesome weekend?  No.  No it was not.  In college football parlance, it was rather mundane to be honest.  Let’s get to the recap.

It looked like some crazy football could happen with what went on Friday night.  California was hosting Arizona State as the only undefeated team left in the Pac-12.  But remember…you play…to win…the game.  And that’s what the Sun Devils did.  A close game but they were able to hold off Cal and, for now, put the Pac-12 on the outside looking in for the College Football Playoff.  The conference has to hope for some chaos elsewhere to get back in the race.

Notre Dame put on show against Virginia.  The Irish never looked like they were in trouble in this one.  They still have a few difficult games left (USC, Michigan, Duke) but they don’t have a seriously difficult one left this year.  If they win out, they could be an outside choice for the College Football Playoff depending on what else happens.  That should piss the anti-Notre Dame folks off but they would be firmly in the Top 10 all season.  As for UVA, this isn’t a bad loss for them as they still have to be considered the favourite in the ACC Coastal division.

Hey guess what?  Maryland cancelled classes so that students could fill the stadium for their huge game against Penn State.  They should have just let the kids have a long weekend.  Penn State put a colossal beatdown on the Terps, winning 59-0.  The Terps couldn’t do anything right and the Nittany Lions, consequently, looked like everything they did was near-perfect.  I mean I get that PSU is an outside contender for the New Year’s Six but it shouldn’t have been this much of a lopsided game.  The Terrapins had no life it seemed.  And now they look like they will struggle to get to a bowl game after all the early season hype.  Mike Locksley has quite the job ahead of him.

Another game that many thought would be closer went down on The Plains (see a pattern here?).  The Bulldogs were boatraced by what seems like a seriously good Auburn team.  And yes Bo Nix looks like the real deal.  Not amazing but the kind of QB that can do enough to propel a team to victory.  Hell, even Bully, the Bulldogs’ mascot, was hit by an Auburn player after being pushed out of bounds.  So yeah, MSU was beaten on all fronts on Saturday.

Minnesota is quietly undefeated.  They don’t have a true Heisman contender.  They barely beat all the teams in their non-conference schedule.  So them holding on to beat Purdue to start their conference was a slight surprise but not enough to even put them in the Top 25.  But the way things are going, don’t be surprised if they are 8-0 when they host Penn State in early November.  P.J. Fleck doing some work in the Twin Cities rowing that damn boat.

I think Virginia Tech is going to be in tough to keep their bowl game streak alive which is at 26 seasons right now.  They were knocked around by Duke and have looked terrible in Bud Foster’s final season as defensive coordinator.  And I get they are in the ACC but their schedule isn’t exactly easy and now they have to win four of their final eight to go bowling.  Part of me wants them not to make it so other teams get an opportunity, I’m not gonna lie.

Bama has absolutely crushed pretty much all their opponents this season.  They just destroyed the Ole Miss recently.  That matters little at this point.  What will be more important is what they do when the tougher games begin.  That starts in two weeks when they travel to College Station to play Texas A&M.  And now that they are #1 in the AP Poll (and rightfully so), they become a bigger target and all it takes is one loss to get many of the media pundits talking about Bama’s demise and shit like that.  Let’s start with them not making the CFP for once and then MAYBE we can discuss it.  Until that point, there’s no point.  Saban is Saban and always has the horses to be in the Top 4.

Ohio State laid a beating on Nebraska.  I, along with many others, fell for the preseason Husker hype.  As for Ohio State, this team is really good and could make a case for being #1 at this point.  They still have a very tough schedule left but it wouldn’t be a total surprise if they did run the table.  Ryan Day is looking like the right choice in Columbus.  Back to Nebraska, that was the worst loss by a team who hosted College Gameday ever.  That’s pretty sad.  Saying that, I had them not doing that great early on and then winning almost all of their conference games after the Ohio State game.  I mean it could still happen but they are not inspiring hope that is for sure.

Wake Forest is sneaking up on everyone in the ACC.  They were the first 5-0 team in FBS after beating Boston College.  Honestly, there is a possibility that the Deacs could be 9-0 when they head to Clemson to face the defending champs.  Again, not a team of stars but very few holes and Dave Clawson is one of the better coaches in America right now.  I would love to see them get some New Year’s Six chatter and soon enough they will if they keep winning.

UCF annihilated UConn but has given up their spot as the New Year’s Six favourite from the Group of Five conferences.  That honour goes to Boise State.  For now.

Michigan might actually be good.  Who knows?  But it was just Rutgers they beat so that is not a barometer of anything.  It’s Rutgers after all.  It also was the end of the Chris Ash era in Piscataway as he was finally shitcanned, probably more than a year after he should have been fired in the first place.

The other ranked-on-ranked game was Washington hosting USC and it was the bad Trojans that showed up as the Huskies looked like they were never in trouble all game.  More are calling for Clay Helton’s dismissal.  Keyshawn Johnson talked about Tarmac in an Instagram post, referencing Lane Kiffin’s firing on an airport tarmac.  So yeah, things not going well in southern California.

Alright enough recappin’.  Time for another Bossman Top 25.  I am sure you might bristle at some of my rankings.  I will explain below:

#1 Alabama
#2 Clemson
#3 Georgia
#4 Ohio State
#5 Auburn
#6 LSU
#7 Notre Dame
#8 Wisconsin
#9 Oklahoma
#10 Florida
#11 Penn State
#12 Texas
#13 Washington
#14 Iowa
#15 Oregon
#16 Michigan
#17 Utah
#18 Boise State
#19 UCF
#20 Virginia
#21 Oklahoma State
#22 Texas A&M
#23 Arizona State
#24 Michigan State
#25 Wake Forest

Yep, I put Alabama at #1.  Yeah I know I had them farther down last week but things change.  And honestly they are looking better than Clemson at this point of the season.  I could also say the same thing about Georgia and Ohio State but I am not ready to pull the trigger on those yet.  And also remember that this is on September 30th, not what I think it will be at the end of the year.  Plus you have Auburn and LSU right there close to the top and at some point they may all become interchangeable and no one’s opinion would be truly wrong.  There’s still plenty of games to separate all these teams and, as per usual, I hope for chaos because chaos in college football is fun.

See you back on Thursday for the college football TV schedule.  Until then, enjoy your week everyone!

The 2019 College Football Coaching Hot Seat List

Clay might want to avoid airport tarmacs this season.

Look, I get it.  USC is one of the toughest coaching jobs in the nation.  Thanks to Pete Carroll, the standards are now always high in L.A.  That’s why you see guys like Lane Kiffin flame out and get fired on an airport tarmac (which is still one of the most hilarious coach firings ever).  Helton will need to get the Trojans to perform this year or he is in trouble.  How much trouble?  Well…

IT’S HOT SEAT TIME!  This post has been actually fairly accurate over the years.  I am holding on to this as much as I can considering a lot of my predictions turn out to be shit.

List time!  This is ordered (like every year) from most likely to be fired to least:

Almost Guaranteed Shitcanning

  1. Randy Edsall (UConn) – Things are looking terrible for UConn football.  They have decided to move to the Big East for all sports, except football.  This means the AAC didn’t want them so next year, the Huskies become Independents.  Let’s just say Edsall’s second stint in Storrs has been drastically worse than his first stint.  Needed to keep his job – UConn to actually look like a decently competitive team.  Prediction – Will be gone before the end of the season but not before he gets more ridiculous bonuses thanks to his clause-laden contract.
  2. Mike Neu (Ball State) – Ball State has looked like a MAC also-ran every year since they ran the regular season table over a decade ago.  Former Cardinal quarterback Neu has not righted the ship in the slightest.  It also doesn’t look like things will improve any time soon considering many players have transferred out as well.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility at the very least.  Prediction – He will be gone with either one or two games to go and will become a quarterback coach somewhere at a lower level in the next year or two.
  3. Tony Sanchez (UNLV) – It was a bit of a risk getting Sanchez, a successful high school coach at Bishop Gorman in Vegas, to be the head man for the Rebels.  No offense to Tony but it’s a much different game and he has been overrated almost every year there.  Needed to keep his job – Play meaningful football in late November.  Prediction – He will end up being a lame duck coach for a game or two and then the search will be on for someone to coach this program into that brand new shiny stadium.
  4. Mike Bobo (Colorado State) – This is a tough one.  It isn’t Bobo’s fault that he has had health concerns.  But he is the head coach so he is ultimately responsible for the program.  The Rams have become worse ever since they got their new stadium.  I see it getting worse before it gets better.  Needed to keep his job – Creeping towards bowl eligibility so like 4 or 5 wins.  Prediction – Bobo may resign before he gets fired if anything goes on with his health.  Either way, 2019 should be his last year in Fort Collins.
  5. Frank Wilson (UTSA) – I thought of putting him in the next section but I am starting to think this is almost a guarantee now.  I am glad the Roadrunners gave him another chance to get things going again in San Antonio.  It’s a new program and they need some stability but at some point stability is less important than changing the program to get better. Needed to keep his job – At least four wins.  Prediction – I honestly can’t see the Roadrunners winning more than two games.  Other than Rice they are probably the worst team in Conference USA and Wilson will be shitcanned but this might wait until after the season is over.

Probable Shitcanning

  1. Bob Davie (New Mexico) – This is the exact same spot Bob was in last season.  And he wasn’t fired.  Why?  Who knows, especially since it sounds like Davie is too much of a disciplinarian.  My guess is the buyout is too large and UNM can’t afford it.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility and the look of a program on the rise in the Mountain West.  Prediction – Three wins (AGAIN!) and a 95% chance of being canned as long as they have the money in Albuquerque to do so.
  2. Philip Montgomery (Tulsa) – Tulsa has struggled in the American for the last two years.  Another can’t miss head coaching prospect has fallen pretty far.  I don’t see anything that lends to Tulsa improving but they really can’t get worse at this point.  Needed to keep his job – Four wins may be enough here.  Prediction – Less than 4 wins and probably a coaching change at some point after the season.
  3. Charlie Strong (USF) – I am going out on a serious limb with this call.  He started off great and challenged UCF that first year in Tampa.  Last year the Bulls dropped to 7 wins and I see them missing out on bowl season this year.  Needed to keep his job – At least seven wins and not fall too far behind “twin brother” UCF.  Prediction – Below .500 and a surprising ousting (at least to the college football media).

Possible Shitcanning

  1. Clay Helton (USC) – You would have thought him having his picture at the top of this blog post would have him at #1.  Not so fast, my friend (copyright Lee Corso).  His status all depends on how the Trojans do and do many think they will be as bad as they were last season?  Needed to keep his job – Back to at least 7 wins and challenging for the Pac-12 South title.  Prediction – I see the Trojans at the 7-win mark but considering the fans and alumni, that still might not be enough for poor Clay.
  2. Chris Ash (Rutgers) – I know this might make no sense and I am wondering if I am doubting myself here.  No one really wants this job so why would they fire a guy who wants to stay there and build the program back up.  Needed to keep his job – 3 wins.  Prediction – I can’t see them winning over two games but again who else would they get to coach there?
  3. Steve Addazio (Boston College) – Boston College is not bad.  Hasn’t been for years (for the most part).  But the fans and alumni might be getting a bit tired of the 7-win ceiling in Chestnut Hill.  It’s like a poor man’s Bo Pelini at this point.  Needed to keep his job – More than seven wins for God’s sake!  Prediction – I think they actually fall to 5 despite having one of the best running backs in the country.  So will they pull the trigger and do something to really try and make the Eagles a threat in the ACC or are the admins satisfied with being fourth or fifth in the ACC Atlantic for the foreseeable future?
  4. Brent Brennan (San Jose State) – This program is bad.  Has been for the better part of, well, forever.  It’s got to the point where there are rumours that SJSU would be kicked out of the Mountain West to create a better conference.  That’s how bad things are for the Spartans (and that’s not just in football).  I think Brennan could be an OK coach but unless something drastic changes or they get a program-changing player to come to San Jose, nothing really will.  In the end, though, would letting Brennan go be the answer?  Needed to keep his job – For SJSU to win more than a couple games.  Prediction – I have the Spartans winning two games but who the hell knows what happens with this team and their coach.
  5. Doug Martin (New Mexico State) – The coach could always be fired here.  This program is used to not being good at all.  I still believe that very few good coaches would want to go to Las Cruces to coach football (no offense to Las Cruces) so firing Martin may not make sense.  Needed to keep his job – Not be the worst Independent team.  Prediction – They should be better than UMass but that’s it.  Lucky for them, UConn joins their “team” of Independent teams so there could be one more team the Aggies feel superior to.

Doubtful Shitcanning (although it still could happen)

  1. Lovie Smith (Illinois) – I have made peace with the fact that Lovie will not get fired.  Now watch him get canned midway through the year.  Needed to keep his job – To be in contention for bowl-eligibility late into the season.  Prediction – I’ve got them at 4 wins so technically with two games to go they should still have a chance to go to a bowl game.
  2. Willie Taggart (Florida State) – Willie needs to get some slack here.  It’s not like Jimbo Fisher left him with an amazing program.  He deserves time to see if he can do what he did at USF.  Needed to keep his job – Back to a bowl game for now.  Prediction – I have the Noles winning 9 so they should at least be in the New Year’s Six conversation into November which might garner Taggart an extension instead of a spot on this list.
  3. Gus Malzahn (Auburn) – Gus is going to be on this list forever I think.  Even when the Tigers beat both Georgia and Bama, the Gus Bus veers into the hot seat.  Something has to give I think…or not.  If he keeps winning 7 or 8 games then this will continue ad infinitum.  Needed to keep his job –  Honestly?  Another 7 or 8 win season.  Prediction – 8 wins so we will see you next year when I discuss Gus again.
  4. Matt Luke (Ole Miss) – Two seasons of sanctions doesn’t help Luke’s cause here.  But now with two really good coordinators he will have no excuses for failure.  Not doing well, even in the SEC West, would, at the very least put Luke on a hotter seat than he is on now.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility in their first year back after being barred from the postseason.  Prediction – Four wins and the rumours that Rich Rod will get the job for 2020.
  5. Mike Bloomgren (Rice) – It’s a tale of two schools in the Houston area.  There’s Houston and then there’s Rice.  Houston is one of the better Group of Five teams.  Rice is Rice.  Don’t expect much from Bloomgren and the Owls although at some point the admins will want to see some progress.  Needed to keep his job – Don’t do anything stupid.  Prediction – A winless season which will move Bloomgren up this list despite the fact Rice has no talent.
  6. Bobby Wilder (Old Dominion) – Things were looking great for the Monarchs.  A relatively new school and they went to the Bahamas Bowl back in 2016.  Wilder was even being considered for other openings.  Fast forward two-and-a-half years and, other than their massive upset of Virginia Tech last season, not much is going right for this program.  Needed to keep his job – 5 wins and playing meaningful football in Conference USA well into November.  Prediction – 5 wins and playing meaningful football in Conference USA well into November.

As you may have noticed there is no mention of Jim Harbaugh on this list.  First of all, I think the Wolverines get to the College Football Playoff.  And secondly, it is apparent that the admins at Michigan don’t have any inkling of firing Captain Khaki.  He will probably leave to go back to the NFL before he gets fired in Ann Arbor.

The final post is coming up for my predictions and it is my normally horrible Heisman ballot.  Then the season begins!  4 days away!  I will do a small post later this week on the Week Zero schedule.  Everything should be in place in the next day or two for the weekend (and the huge schedule of four games).  Enjoy your day everyone!

Aw man it’s time to find out how good my 2018 college football predictions were

No more football this season.  Cue the tears.  We are seven long months away from college football starting again.  No, I will not watch spring games.  Pretty much all of them aren’t broadcast here anyway but even if they were, I would do like the Pro Bowl and not watch them at all.  More mock drafts coming your way…hold your applause.  I will not cover the Combine.  I don’t care what a player likes on his tacos or where he believes he will be in five years or whether his parents like watching FOX News.  To me, it feels like the scouts failed at being investigators so they are able to cosplay it here.  The CFL starts in late May again this year with their pre-season (May 26th to be exact).  I still don’t understand why the pre-season games aren’t all in neutral locations.  Grow the damn league for god’s sake.  Oh and the AAF starts soon…this Saturday night actually.  Wow.  We shall see how this goes.  Either it becomes the WLAF 2.0 or it actually morphs into somewhat of a football minor league, which is sorely needed in my opinion.

Alright let’s get to the pathetic part of our show…my predictions.  And how I did with them.  My first guess is that I did poorly.  Let’s find out if I’m right.

College Football Playoff and New Year’s Six

  • My College Football Playoff Final Four was very close!
    • Alabama – Picked them #1 and that’s where they were.  God I’m good.  OK yes most people picked them in the CFP but still.
    • Clemson – I had them #2.  I am two for two now!  Again, this was another easy pick.  And I had them winning the national championship too!
    • Oklahoma – Three-for-three baby!  Although I picked them #3 and they ended up #4 so they got Bama at their best.
    • Penn State – Three out of four ain’t bad.  Problem is the Nittany Lions were one of the best teams left out of the New Year’s Six as well.  Still.  They were #12 going into bowl season.  So I didn’t do too bad here.
  • How about my New Year’s Six picks? Not too bad.  Got the Sugar Bowl exactly right.  But Virginia Tech?  Nope.  Boise State?  Nada.  USC?  Well, shit.
  • I had Mississippi State, Miami and Michigan State being just on the outside of the NY6 looking in but playing in good bowls. OK so you can’t win em all (although the Bulldogs were pretty darn good).

Heisman Trophy

  • OK so I had Bryce Love and Jonathan Taylor as the top two of my Heisman ballot.  Not good.
  • I actually had Kyler Murray 23rd so just out of my honourable mention section.  Also bad.
  • At least I got Tua Tagovailoa and Will Grier near the top.  So those are wins.  Other misses included Khalil Tate (what the hell happened there?), Justin Herbert (who could be the front runner going into 2019), and Cam Akers (ugh).

Let’s Look at Some Bad Team Predictions

  • Look, Kentucky was a shock to EVERYONE.  I will include it here but everyone made that goof.
  • Virginia was a bit of a revelation this season.  I figured they would slide to the basement again but Bronco Mendenhall has this team humming.
  • Wazzu was fun and really good which is not what I said at the start of the year.  I apologize to everyone’s favourite head coach, Mike Leach, and everyone’s favourite 70s pornstar/college quarterback, Gardner Minshew.
  • I also to say sorry to Herm Edwards.  He got the Sun Devils to a bowl game.  I thought they would lose 11.  Yeesh.
  • Virginia Tech was WAY worse than I thought they would be (I figured they would run the regular season table).  Not good.  They still made it to a bowl game though.
  • Dino Babers finally was able to bring true BaberBall to Syracuse.  Along with Kentucky they have to be considered the surprises of the season so I don’t feel too bad with my prediction here.
  • What Luke Fickell did in southern Ohio this season was amazing.  He has brought the Bearcats back to prominence and solidified his spot as a good head coach.  I did not think this would happen.  Chalk up another L for the Bossman.
  • Louisville.  Sweet Jesus what a car wreck that was.  That is how much Lamar Jackson meant to that program.
  • Navy was tough to watch.  Like seriously tough to watch.  I guess we are too used to them being a good team (or at least I was).
  • I’m trying to remember why I had Colorado State so high up in the Mountain West standings.  And I honestly can’t figure it out although they shouldn’t have been THAT bad, right?
  • Nice to see Hawaii have another good year.  Man, I messed up on a lot of these predictions.
  • Both Florida Directional schools had way different years than I predicted.  FIU ended up being much better than my prediction and the Fighting Kiffins of Florida Atlantic University were much worse.  I am really starting to hate this exercise.
  • I couldn’t even get through the Sun Belt without making an error in judgment.  Georgia Southern was back to their winning ways and I guess I just didn’t see it coming.

Let’s Look at Some Good Team Predictions

  • I’ve already discussed Bama and Clemson.  I also did well with my Georgia, Oklahoma and UCF predictions (although I sadly had UCF losing one game this season).
  • I figured Buffalo would be near the top of the MAC.  At one point they had an outside shot at the Group of Five spot but faded down the stretch.
  • I’m sure most experts did really well here but I aced the MAC pretty much from top to bottom.
  • Did not take the bait about NC State being awesome this year.  They were quite good but I still figured them third in the ACC Atlantic.
  • Appalachian State being ALMOST the class of the Group of Five.
  • Kansas doing terrible!  I know, low hanging fruit.
  • And the Sun Belt as a whole. Despite being able to see very few games I pretty much nailed that conference as well.

Coaching Hot Seat Fun-Time Extravaganza

  • The D.J. Durkin affair seemed to be a bigger shitshow than even I thought.  But he was number one on the list and canned.  Good riddance.
  • From the rest of the top seven, only two remain and I am perplexed as to why.  Lovie Smith got a fucking extension from Illinois.  Why?  And Bob Davie seems to be holding on in Albuquerque.  I wonder if that’s more the fact that New Mexico would struggle to get a coach anywhere in FBS and would have to scour the FCS to find someone.
  • Mike MacIntyre gone in Colorado.  No surprise there since one season does not make a coaching legend.  And Kute Kliff Kingsbury is also gone.  He was fired at Texas Tech which obviously made him the lead candidate for the Arizona Cardinals head coaching position.  Sometimes I don’t understand how these kinds of things work.
  • Randy Edsall and his ridiculous contract got a stay of execution at UConn.  I wonder if he gets a bonus for not getting fired by Super Bowl Sunday.
  • My Doubtful Shitcanning list had a few guys who had pretty good to great years.  Kalani Sitake got BYU back to where they belong…over .500.  Ed Orgeron put LSU in the New Year’s Six.  And Mark Stoops did amazing things at Kentucky and would have been my choice for Coach of the Year if I had one.
  • As for the rest of that section, Larry Fedora was replaced with Mack Brown of all people.  As for Tony Sanchez and Chris Ash, they too are in a short list of people who somehow kept their jobs for 2019.

So again I decided to compare myself to the Stassen method of pre-season predictions.  I don’t know why I subject myself to this but I am always curious as to how I stand compared to real experts who truly study the game and don’t do this on the side…meaning it’s their actual job.  So after getting out the calculator and ruler and protractor and slide rule, my final score is….

137.

Considering how many not so good picks I made, this seems surprising.  But for the most part, I had teams in the right spots in their division/conference.  Just maybe had them a couple wins too high or too low.  Now watch the winner have like 110 and I am almost dead last.

Alright did well for a second straight season!  But now this tells me that college football is a long way away.  Like a LONG way away.  199 days to be exact.  I am going to go for a quick cry now.

So how about that Super Bowl…yuck.  What a pile of shit.  Arguably the most boring Super Bowl of all-time and that includes all those blowouts that have happened in the past.  No touchdowns through three quarters?  With the Patriots and Rams involved?  Seriously?  Yeah I guess the defenses showed up for this one but man the offenses were terrible.  Especially Jared Goff.  One of the worst Super Bowl performances by a quarterback ever.  And it’s not like he threw a ton of interceptions or fumbled a few times.  He was just awful.  Gofful if you will.  The Patriots won 13-3 and that’s the end of the NFL season.  This wouldn’t have happened if we had had the Saints and Chiefs.  Just sayin’.

Alright what do we have to look forward to: mock drafts, more mock drafts, some random posts, oh and the conference tournament schedule which thankfully will have the final year of the ACC Network (in it’s current Raycom form).  That has always given me headaches.  Alright have a great rest of the week folks!

The 2018 College Football Coaching Hot Seat List – Sponsored by these two jamokes

You know, it was a relatively quiet college football offseason.  It really was.  Then these two became stories and all that went to shit.  Personally, I think universities have to take it upon themselves to hold these coaches to a high standard.  Otherwise this stuff happens and, more often than not, the head coach comes out relatively unscathed and many others are thrown under the bus in his stead.  Durkin should be gone and I would be shocked if he wasn’t.  I also believe Urban should be fired even if you want to say it’s just for the optics of the program.  Hell, Jim Tressel was fired for less and people acted like he was the devil.

HOT SEAT TIME!  This post has been actually fairly accurate over the years.  Hopefully I can keep it up because let’s be honest, it’s not like my predictions, as a whole, are setting any records here.

Let’s just get to the list shall we?  This is ordered (like every year) from most likely to be fired to least:

Almost Guaranteed Shitcanning

  1. D.J. Durkin (Maryland) – Things were looking up for the Terps.  Then we find out that this guy is a shitbag bully…well, more of a shitbag bully than your average college football coach.  Let’s be honest: most college football players have thick skins.  But this guy went WAY over the line and often.  Needed to keep his job – Maryland admin to put their heads in the sand.  Prediction – Will be gone before the season even commences leading to a gongshow of a season for the Terrapins.
  2. Scottie Montgomery (East Carolina) – ECU is wanting to step into the way-back machine and not fire Ruffin McNeill.  It has been an unmitigated disaster since he left.  That’s not all on Montgomery but man it’s been tough to watch how things have deteriorated in Greenville.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility at the very least.  Prediction – Will be gone mid-season and will end up as a position coach in the next year or two somewhere.
  3. Lovie Smith (Illinois) – I think this experiment is about dead.  No offense to Lovie but it’s different than coaching in the NFL (you hear that Herm Edwards?) and they still don’t have the players needed to compete in the Big Ten.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility, plain and simple.  Prediction – He will either be fired late in the season or will coach the last one or two games as a lame duck coach.  So yeah, he’ll get to November but that’s where it will be the end of the line for ol’ Lovie.
  4. Brad Lambert (Charlotte) – This is a tough one…kind of.  Charlotte has been awful since becoming a football program.  To be frank, they should have stayed in FCS for another few years if not a decade.  Instead they move right into Conference USA and get pummeled every season.  This year should be no different for the only coach the 49ers have ever known.  Needed to keep his job – Creeping towards bowl eligibility so like 4 or 5 wins.  Prediction – Lambert will slink back to FCS (if not lower) after they fire him at season’s end.

Probable Shitcanning

  1. David Beaty (Kansas) – I should probably put him in the top section but Kansas is kind of weird that way.  Honestly, he should have been fired after last season’s debacle.  Lawrence is a tough place to coach football but the higher-ups at Kansas seem to be giving him a lot of chances so who knows what the plans are beyond this season. Needed to keep his job – At least four wins.  Prediction – I honestly cannot see the Jayhawks winning a conference game…maybe they’ll upset a team and win one.  So the chances of them winning four games is slim so I see him being fired after the season ends.
  2. Bob Davie (New Mexico) – Things were looking up for Bobby down in Albuquerque.  The Lobos were getting better running the option offense almost like they were a military academy or Georgia Tech.  Becoming bowl contenders on the reg.  Now, a pretty bad season and reports that Davie treats his players like shit.  Great.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility and probably more since it’s New Mexico and letting that kind of crap happen can’t be good for a program that has done almost nothing in football ever.  Prediction – Under .500 and him hoping that he might be able to snag an ESPN job for 2019.
  3. Everett Withers (Texas State) – Texas State.  Another FBS disaster.  Even Dennis Franchione couldn’t truly turn this program into a bowl game contender.  Needed to keep his job – Surprisingly 4 may do the job.  Prediction – Less than 4 wins and another coach search for the Bobcats.
  4. Mike Neu (Ball State) – Ball State has been more of a non-factor in the MAC than any other program not named Kent State in the past five years.  Despite the fact that he’s a former Ball State QB, they may figure out that he was not the right hire to make at the time.  Needed to keep his job – Making some of the teams in the MAC West play hard to beat them.  Prediction – Will be at the bottom of the MAC West and will be let go after the season.
  5. Mike MacIntyre (Colorado) – MacIntyre actually suffers from the 2016 season where the Buffaloes played out of their damn minds and won the Pac-12 South.  Other than that year, Colorado has been mostly a doormat their entire Pac-12 stay.  They won’t be in the basement this year but it might take a lot to quell a fairly unhappy fanbase.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility and being competitive against some of the upper echelon conference teams.  Prediction – Just missing out on a bowl game giving the AD and the brass a tough decision to chew on in the offseason.
  6. Kliff Kingsbury (Texas Tech) – I don’t foresee any way that the Red Raiders are anything more than the one team better than Kansas in the Big XII this season.  I believe the Kute Kliff Kingsbury era is probably pretty much done in Lubbock.  Needed to keep his job – 6 wins.  Prediction – He won’t make it to 6 and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was let go with a game or two remaining on the sked so they can start the search for a new head coach early.

Possible Shitcanning

  1. Randy Edsall (UConn) – His return to Storrs has not been good.  Saying that, he is trying to rebuild the program in his image the way it was in his first go-around with the Huskies.  I just think he won’t be sticking around to see what happens with his recruits.  Needed to keep his job – Any sort of noticeable improvement.  Prediction – Not a whole lot of improvement but that’s tough to judge.  This will again be a case of an AD having to take a long, hard look as to what the future of the football program should look like and who should lead it.
  2. Urban Meyer (Ohio State) – This is a tough one.  Should he be fired?  Probably.  Will he be?  That’s a different story.  He left Florida a bit of a mess and looks like he is starting to do so in Columbus as well.  I think it’s very possible he will be fired but I can see it being a bit of a mid-season knee-jerk reaction type of thing rather than a “we are doing this at the start of the season” type of thing.  Because for all the good they may want to do, they remember the Luke Fickell disaster.  Needed to keep his job – For tOSU to value winning over, well, pretty much everything.  Prediction – He  will be on the sidelines for opening day at least.  Beyond that, who knows.

Doubtful Shitcanning (although it still could happen)

  1. Kalani Sitake (BYU) – As patient as BYU will be, they can only show so much patience.  This is a program that is used to, at the very least, winning records.  I still think as long as there is some semblance of improvement they will give him more time.  Needed to keep his job – Get back to a bowl game.  Prediction – 6 wins, invitation to a lower-level bowl game and another year to hopefully continue improving the Cougars.
  2. Mark Stoops (Kentucky) – Another place that is tough to coach because of the conference they are in.  The Wildcats haven’t too bad considered the few coaches they had previous to Big Game Bob’s brother.  Needed to keep his job – To be in contention for bowl-eligibility late into the season.  Prediction – This will be interesting.  I only have them down for four wins so this could be a borderline call here.
  3. Ed Orgeron (LSU) – I honestly feel for ol’ Eddie here.  Unless the Tigers win 10 games in the regular season, his job will always be in jeopardy according to the rabid LSU fanbase.  And the fact he replaced Les Miles who was a damn good coach for most of his time in Baton Rouge doesn’t help him any.  Needed to keep his job – 8 wins at the very least.  Prediction – I have LSU winning exactly that many which means the rumblings will continue well into the 2019 season.
  4. Larry Fedora (North Carolina) – Look we all know that injuries took their toll on a North Carolina team that was already going to be hard-pressed to get to even 7 wins.  But that was definitely a collapse of somewhat epic proportions last year.  Anything resembling that this season and they will tip their fedoras to Fedora and bid him adieu.  Needed to keep his job –  Improvement toward being a contender again.  Prediction – Tough to measure but the Tar Heels won’t be as bad as last season.  That’s almost a certainty.
  5. Chris Ash (Rutgers) – I could have just copied what was here last year because he is in the exact same spot.  Rutgers has, again, become a terrible place to coach Power Five football.  They long for the days of the Big East that’s for sure…well, except for that Big Ten cashola, know what I’m sayin?  Needed to keep his job – He’s fine for now because no one wants to coach in Piscataway or wherever the hell Rutgers is.  Prediction – Does it really matter?  They aren’t going bowling anyway.  Maybe next year.
  6. Tony Sanchez (UNLV) – As much as it has ever been in Vegas, it’s a make or break year for the Rebels.  They were one horrifically bad loss last year from going bowling.  Not going bowling this year would be disastrous considering the state of the MW West Division (other than SDSU and FSU).  Needed to keep his job – At least go bowling.  Prediction – 8 wins and possibly even a spot in the Mountain West Championship and Sanchez should get an extension of sorts.

As you may have noticed there is no mention of Brian Kelly or Jim Harbaugh on this list.  I have fully come around to the fact that unless either of these two guys shit the bed with their respective teams, they will be back next season.  Man, some fanbases are seriously harsh.  Then again, these guys are multi-millionaires so they better have thick skin and a propensity not to listen to most people.

The final post is coming up for my predictions and it is my Heisman ballot (if anyone had been foolish enough to give me a Heisman ballot).  Then the season begins!  4 days away!  Other than the game on CBS Sports Network I still have no idea what’s happening with the specialty pack.  I have a feeling I will have to figure this out over the next day or two.  At least this year I won’t be duped into fully believing that any ESPN games would appear during Week Zero and then get pissed off when they don’t.  At least that’s what I am telling myself.  Enjoy your day everyone!

The 2017 College Football Coaching Hot List – Sponsored by the Lane Kiffin Redemption Story

He’s on the road back to redemption and he had one of the greatest firings of all-time, being shitcanned on an airport tarmac while at USC. Nice!  I love stories like that.

It’s HOT SEAT TIME!  Last year, two of my four top selections and three of my top six were sent packing.  Unfortunately some coaches (like Craig Bohl) made me look like a fool by being really successful.  Thanks a lot Craig.  Like the haircut though.

Alright, here we go with the list.  I have ordered this (like last year) from most likely to be in the unemployment line to least likely:

Almost Guaranteed Shitcanning

  1. Paul Haynes (Kent State) – He was #4 on my list last season.  How he kept his job is beyond me.  He just was put into a bad situation when he had to replace Darrell Hazell (who went on to do sweet fuck all at Purdue himself).  Needed to keep his job – A god damn miracle.  Prediction – Mid-season shitcanning and perhaps a year off of coaching altogether.
  2. Lance Leipold (Buffalo) – Let’s stay in the MAC shall we?  Leipold came into much fanfare (well as much as you can get in the MAC).  He had guided Wisconsin-Whitewater to what seemed like a bajillion D-III titles.  His first year in Buffalo showed promise.  This past season not so much.  I can’t see this ending well for Sir Lance-a-not-so-much.  Needed to keep his job – vying for bowl eligibility in the final weekend.  Prediction – Scraping the bottom of the MAC barrel and heading back to FCS at the highest (if not back to D-III).
  3. Todd Graham (Arizona State) – I remember when this guy liked to hop from job to job because he could. He was a good head coach and many programs wanted to have him.  Now he will be hopping to his next job but not of his own volition.  Needed to keep his job – Bowl eligibility and a victory over Arizona.  Prediction – 3 wins and who really cares at that point if the Sun Devils beat the Wildcats or not (see below for the reason why).
  4. Kliff Kingsbury (Texas Tech) – Looks matter.  How do I know?  Well, many things in my life that I won’t get into now.  Also, Kute Kliff Kingsbury.  Here’s a guy who hit his high point halfway through his first season in Lubbock and is still around.  Why?  If it’s not his looks he must have damning photos of the athletic director in a compromising position.  Needed to keep his job – Some semblance of defense from his squad.  Prediction – Thousands of female college football fans crying and taking his offensive acumen to the FCS.

Probable Shitcanning

  1. Sean Kugler (UTEP) – He was good for a soundbite or three when UTEP was good that one season.  Well, good enough in a Conference USA kind of way.  Since then, El Paso has once again become a college football outpost that no one wants to be in. Needed to keep his job – bowl eligibility.  Prediction – I can’t see them winning more than one game so this may happen during the season rather than wait for the misery to be over.
  2. Kevin Sumlin (Texas A&M) – He seems to be on this list a lot.  But he is never in the almost-guaranteed-to-be-fired part.  He just hasn’t seemed to recreate the magic when Johnny Manziel was around.  And yes, a big part was Gianni Party’s play but Sumlin had done wonders in Houston and appeared to be doing them in College Station.  That may not be the case anymore.  Needed to keep his job – 9 wins and be at least on the cusp of contending in the SEC West.  Prediction – 7 wins and the top Group of Five opening next season for Mr. Sumlin.
  3. Mark Whipple (UMass) – When is UMass heading back to FCS?  Whenever it is, I can’t foresee Coach Whipple being there when it happens.  Needed to keep his job – at least 4 wins and to stay competitive in more games.  Prediction – 2 wins and a quiet exit.
  4. Rich Rodriguez (Arizona) – Remember what I said above about Todd Graham?  I think RichRod is also in a hot seat but not nearly as hot as T-Graham’s.  No improvement in the desert may seal his fate though.  Needed to keep his job – being better than Arizona State.  Prediction – will not be better than Arizona State…and will be fired for it (along with many other reasons).
  5. Brian Kelly (Notre Dame) – Kelly suffers from two things: 1) the Irish got to the national championship not too long ago and 2) the expectations in South Bend are ALWAYS at least 10 wins.  If he wasn’t such an insufferable prick at times I would feel sorry for him.  Needed to keep his job – 10 wins.  Did you not just read what I typed?  Prediction – 8 wins and I am sure he will yell at at least one player in plain view of a camera in front of a national audience.
  6. David Beaty (Kansas) – Poor Dave Beaty.  Does he really have a chance in Lawrence to do anything except maybe (MAYBE) win four games at most?  I fail to see how he can win more with the state the program is.  God, I wish there was promotion/relegation.  Needed to keep his job – 4 wins.  Prediction – Half of that.  Or 2 wins for the less mathematically inclined.  Again, Poor Dave.

Possible Shitcanning

  1. Lovie Smith (Illinois) – This isn’t the NFL, Lovie.  I think he understands that now.  An unenviable task in Champaign to turn around a program that has had little success in the past two decades (save the crazy 2007 season).  Needed to keep his job – 4 wins but be competitive and look like they could be a bowl team next year.  Prediction – 3 wins and the AD is going to have to take a long, hard look as to whether to retain Lovie or not.
  2. Bret Bielema (Arkansas) – The SEC is still a gauntlet.  Saying that, the SEC is not known for a ton of coaching turnover.  One or two each season usually.  Bielema has a tough task ahead as the SEC West especially is difficult to say the least.  Needed to keep his job – Stay in the middle of the pack in the SEC West and at least scare one of Bama, Auburn, or LSU.  Prediction – 7 wins and at least some fans calling for his firing.

Doubtful Shitcanning

  1. Steve Addazio (Boston College) – This is the exact same spot Steve-O was in last year.  And he came through with a 7-win season that led BC fans to still call for his head.  Guy can’t catch a break!  Needed to keep his job – Get to bowl eligibility again and hope the fans calm down a bit.  Prediction – 4 wins and it will be tough not to move way up this list next year.
  2. David Bailiff (Rice) – I remember when he was consistently getting the Owls to bowl games.  I also remember when the Owls were in the Southwest Conference.  Times change.  Sometimes coaches have to as well.  But maybe not quite yet with Mr. Bailiff.  Needed to keep his job – some sense of improvement from last year’s down season.  Prediction – they will improve even if it doesn’t show up in their record.
  3. Tyson Summers (Georgia Southern) – One year in and the athletic department had to send out a press release saying Summers would be retained for this season.  Confidence, gone.  Needed to keep his job – 5 wins and at least look like a potential bowl team.  Prediction – 5 wins and they will look like a bowl team for the most part.
  4. Jim Mora (UCLA) – Jim needs the Rosen One to play like he has a shot at winning the Heisman this season.  And I think it will happen.  Not saying he will win the Heisman but he will be much improved and so will the Bruins.  Needed to keep his job –  7 wins.  Prediction – 9 wins and making USC sweat for the Victory Bell.
  5. Chris Ash (Rutgers) – Coaching at Rutgers must be tough now that the team is firmly in the Big Ten basement.  Let’s be honest: very few people want that job.  Ash is a hero!  Needed to keep his job – he’s safe since no one else wants it for now.  Prediction – 3 wins and keeping Michigan under 60 points.
  6. Butch Jones (Tennessee) – The Champions of Life.  Butch really needs to learn to just shut his mouth and coach sometimes.  Needed to keep his job – 9 wins and being a contender in the SEC East.  Prediction – 10 wins and STILL….CHAMPIONS OF LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE…THE TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS!!!!

Done.  That took too long.  I don’t want to say I hope all these coaches get fired but I do like being accurate.

Next up will be my Heisman ballot.  No one should give me a Heisman ballot.  I will demonstrate why in the next post.  After that will have to be…yes, it’s the FIRST SCHEDULE POST OF THE SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Woohoo!  Finally made it.  We are four days out.  Problem is, I still don’t know where all the U.S. College Sports Package channels have gone to now that they have been replaced by regional CTV channels which, in essence, replaced the need for Sunday Ticket since DAZN now has it.  I will say this often I believe but if DAZN somehow gets a good college football package then I might be changing my tune about it.
