Coaching Carousel Time! And the Week 12 College Football TV Schedule

Yeah it’s that time of the year. The coaching carousel has begun! And what I am going to do this time around is actually compare it to my start-of-the-year predictions. I mean what could go wrong, right?

Let’s look at who has already been shown the door. Jimbo Fisher, Andy Avalos, Zach Arnett and now soon-to-be-retired Brady Hoke…none of who were on my list. Great start, Bossman. Mel Tucker was on my list in the Doubtful Shitcanning section although even I couldn’t think that the way he went out would be the way he went out. What a fucking perv. As for who is currently on the hot seat and was on my list?

  • Neal Brown. Now Neal probably just has to win one of his final two games to secure his job for next season. Lose both those games and end up 6-6? That would be an interesting conversation.
  • Dana Holgorsen. You can give them a bit of slack as they stepped up their competition by joining the Big XII. But Drunk Uncle Dana has been a hot seat regular for a while now and at some point he’s either got to prove he’s still the guy or find a coordinator position somewhere.
  • Danny Gonzales. One of the toughest places to be an FBS head coach, Gonzales probably would have been safe for another year. But with New Mexico State doing so well, some in the New Mexico athletic department might wonder if they should try someone else at the helm.
  • Tom Allen. It’s pretty damn obvious now that the 2020 season was an anomaly and that the Hoosiers are barely treading water with Allen. I doubt he makes it to 2024.

I really don’t want to talk much about certain coaches appearing my list. Guys like Jeff Hafley or Scot Loeffler or Shawn Elliott or Greg Schiano or Brent Pry or Mike Bloomgren and definitely not Eliah Drinkwitz. Nope. Got nothing. So let’s just move on and stop talking about my hot seat list, ALRIGHT ALREADY?

Ok calm down Bossman. Time to give the people what they want: hot, nasty college football TV schedules for Canadians who enjoy watching college football on their television sets.

Tuesday

USCanada
Akron at Eastern Michigan7:00
Toledo at Bowling Green7:00
Western Michigan at Northern Illinois7:00

Toledo has already clinched a spot in the MAC Championship. Now we are looking at bowl eligibility battles. Eastern Michigan has to beat the Zips to stay alive for a bowl game. And the WMU-NIU game is a Loser Won’t Go Bowling matchup. Big stakes on MACtion Tuesday.

Wednesday

USCanada
Buffalo at Miami-OH7:00
Central Michigan at Ohio7:00

The Redhawks clinch the MAC East with a victory here and will get their rematch with Toledo in Detroit in December. And the Chippewas become bowl-eligible if they can somehow beat Ohio. Another important MACtion evening.

Thursday

USCanada
Boston College at Pittsburgh7:00

Yeah this is about as unimportant a weeknight slate as you can get. One game. No stakes. Meh.

Friday

USCanada
USF at UTSA9:00

This, on the other hand, is a much more important night. Both teams with a lot to play for and USF is definitely not the USF of recent years (as we could see from their near-upset of Alabama earlier in the season).

Saturday Early

USCanada
#10 Louisville at MiamiNoon
Michigan State at IndianaNoon
Purdue at NorthwesternNoon
Coastal Carolina at ArmyNoon
#14 Oklahoma at BYUNoon
Chattanooga at #8 AlabamaNoon
East Carolina at NavyNoon
SMU at MemphisNoon
Harvard at YaleNoon
#3 Michigan at MarylandNoon
ULM at #13 Ole MissNoon

A pretty heavy early slate with two ESPN+ games appearing on TSN+. I can see that being a feature all next season. As for the important games in this window I count one big one. The Mustangs and Tigers face off in a matchup that essentially eliminates the loser but doesn’t automatically guarantee the winner a spot in the American Championship. Everything else is kind of meh, although the Sooners could keep up their hopes of one final Big XII Championship appearance in JerryWorld. Finally, the annual Harvard-Yale game appears in this timeslot as per usual.

Saturday Afternoon

USCanada
#22 Utah at #17 Arizona2:30
Duke at Virginia3:00
UCLA at USC3:30
NC State at Virginia Tech3:30
#1 Georgia at #18 Tennessee3:30
UNLV at Air Force3:30
#20 North Carolina at Clemson3:30
Bethune-Cookman vs. Florida A&M (in Orlando)3:30
Wake Forest at #19 Notre Dame3:30
Louisiana at Troy3:30
Minnesota at #2 Ohio State4:00
#23 Oklahoma State at Houston4:00
#6 Oregon at Arizona State4:00
New Mexico State at Auburn4:00

UGA-UT is the big one, obviously, here. A lot of other choice with a lot of other teams looking to stay near the top of the rankings. Oregon, tOSU, and Utah are in must-win mode if they want to keep any CFP or even NY6 possibilities alive. Also, the Rebels of Nevada-Las Vegas play in what could be considered the biggest football game in school history. A win here and they all but clinch a spot in the conference title game. And this is something I never thought of. If UNLV is the #1 team, will they play at home? That game would be about 16 hours after the end of the Pac-12 Championship which is already being played at Allegiant Stadium (which I think is a dumb idea but that’s for another post). So the turnaround would be crazy for the stadium crew.

Saturday Primetime

USCanada
North Alabama at #4 Florida State6:30
California at Stanford6:30
Boise State at Utah State7:00
#5 Washington at #11 Oregon State7:30
Florida at #9 Missouri7:30
FIU at Arkansas7:30
Nebraska at Wisconsin7:30
Kentucky at South Carolina7:30
Syracuse at Georgia Tech8:00
Georgia State at #15 LSU8:00
#7 Texas at Iowa State8:00

Speaking of big games, U-Dub has to try and win in one of the toughest small stadiums to win in, Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Lose and the Pac-12 is all but done in the College Football Playoff race and it opens up a bevy of possibilities to replace the Huskies at the top. The Longhorns are trying to do what the Sooners are also trying to do: give the Big XII one last Fuck You before leaving for the SEC by playing for their conference championship. And finally, you are not seeing things. It is true. A god damn CW DOUBLEHEADER! I hate to admit that the CW has delivered but it has. It has had some great games which has made up for some sub-par production values.

Saturday Late Night

USCanada
San Diego State at San Jose State10:30

Yeah. You could probably go to bed early if you wanted.

Hey, Watch This

Washington at Oregon State (7:30, ABC/TSN2) – I think it’s been a long time since the Beavers have been in the Game of the Week. And I would honestly call this Game 1A since you could easily switch it with the next game on this list and no one would bat an eye. I just think this game has the possibility of being much closer than the other one. The Huskies put themselves in the Pac-12 Championship with a win in Corvallis but Oregon State could put the entire college football world on its head if they pull off the upset.

Georgia at Tennessee (3:30, CBS) – One of the final SEC on CBS games ever and it’s a huge one. If this game was Between the Hedges it wouldn’t be this high. But this game is on the shores of the Tennessee River and it will be one of the loudest Neyland Stadium crowds in recent memory. Another game where an upset is not crazy talk and it would also cause absolute chaos at the top of the college football food chain.

Utah at Arizona (2:30, Pac-12 Network) – Jesus Christ who made the call to get this game on the fucking Pac-12 Network? Well at least us Canadians have an easy time of getting it. Hop on YouTube and search for the Pac-12 Network channel and you’re good to go. Americans…well, they have a much tougher time if it’s not a part of their cable package. What a dumb network. Anyway, both teams have outside chances of getting to the Pac-12 Championship but they would need a lot to happen. A win here isn’t enough. Also, you have to be impressed with the job Jedd Fisch has done in Tucson. This team could be a force in the expanded Big XII next season.

Kansas State at Kansas (7:00, FOX Sports One) – Man, you know it’s kind of a fucked week when two of the top four games are on the Pac-12 Network and FS1. So yeah, can’t see this one if you are a Canadian unless you have other means. I have IPTV. There are also many streams out there to watch. Go find one. Shouldn’t be too hard. Plus, this should be the best Sunflower Showdown maybe ever. Has there been one where both teams were ranked? I don’t think so. Plus, the Wildcats have extra incentive here as they have an outside shot at spoiling a potential Texas-Oklahoma conference championship if they can win here.

Sickos Game of the Week

Michigan State at Indiana (Noon, Big Ten Network) – There are quite a few options for this spot but I will give it to a Big Ten game for once. Here are two terrible teams who will probably have a terrible game that will somehow be close near the end. Think 13-10 which means you almost have to watch because the finish could be spectacular. I almost feel dirty watching games like that.

Hubba Bubba Blowout of the Week

Chattanooga at Alabama (Noon, TSN+) – Once I saw TSN+ was showing this game I knew which game would go in this section. This will be over by halftime. The question is how long does Nick Saban leave Jalen Milroe in.

Wanna Bet?

How about we look back at my picks from last week………..alright, maybe not. I mean I got my first upset pick right with Southern Miss and then it went downhill from there. Stupid Penn State. Anyway, let’s get going with this week’s pickaroos…that sounded dumb.

Miami-OH 31 Buffalo 28

Michigan 42 Maryland 10

Ole Miss 48 ULM 20

Utah 40 Arizona 19

Duke 38 Virginia 24

Tennessee 31 Georgia 27 (yes, I am calling this massive upset)

USC 36 UCLA 26

Ohio State 51 Minnesota 16

Oregon 59 Arizona State 24

South Carolina 42 Kentucky 37

Oregon State 46 Washington 35 (yep, going out on a limb again)

Missouri 41 Florida 20

San Jose State 34 San Diego State 28

Look, normally I am up into the wee hours of the morning watching college football. And I rarely miss games. Well, rarely miss full ones. But I am looking at the Saturday late night sked and asking myself “Bossman, do you really need to watch this game?” The answer is obviously no but I have to convince my brain that that is the correct answer. We shall see how it goes this Saturday. Enjoy the games everyone!

This kind of thing bugs me (and the Week 10 College Football TV Schedule)

Deion Sanders did it this past weekend. So did Pat Narduzzi. And other coaches have done it in the past.

What am I talking about? I’m talking about calling our your players during a press conference and basically running them down in front of the entire college football world. I honestly don’t get the point of it.

Let me start by being VERY clear here: I am not saying players don’t need the proverbial boot up their ass every so often. It’s part of coaching. As long as it’s not abusive, it will probably help in a player’s overall development. Players need to hear what they are doing wrong or otherwise how can they not do that thing wrong again? It’s the same with management in the rest of the working world (I won’t get into the fact that I estimate a good 70% or so of managers don’t know how to manage and that management is a skill because this blog post would end up taking you three hours to read). You have to help your team get better. It makes everything a bit easier, a bit better, and reflects well on the manager.

Saying all that, telling a ton of people that a player or group of players suck(s) is not the way to go about it. I get that coaches can be frustrated but doing that just makes you a bad manager/coach/mentor/teacher/trainer, etc. You do that in private.

Worst part of all this, in Sanders’ case, is Deion’s son is the quarterback and he verbally lambasted the offensive line in that press conference. Look, I agree: their offensive line is not good at all and Shedeur is getting his ass handed to him back there. So will these players step up and do a whole lot better or will they get pissed off and maybe allow a defensive lineman or two by a little bit easier? It’s not Shedeur’s fault but he may end up taking the brunt of this. Is it right to do this? No, but you never know how people are going to act when the coach tells everyone you suck and he has no faith in you.

As for Narduzzi’s, this may be worse. Unlike Deion, Narduzzi recruited all these players. They’re essentially his choices to play at Pitt. So if they don’t do well or don’t develop, he has to take at least a part of the blame as head coach and recruiter. So to throw them under the bus (or at least appear to) looks very poorly on him. And the players are obviously upset. Again, this really isn’t the way to push a player to do better. It may work but it would almost be out of spite rather than from Narduzzi’s choice words.

OK we are still in the midst of football EVERY DAMN DAY! So we must rejoice, no matter the quality of the games. Hey, Conference USA had a few good ones in October and now MACtion and the Fun Belt take over in the final regular season month of the college football season. Let’s get to that schedule which includes more weekday fun!

Tuesday

USCanada
Northern Illinois at Central Michigan7:00
Buffalo at Toledo7:30

Ah, it’s that time of year. MACtion on a Halloween night. By the time the games start, most of the kids are finished trick-or-treating so we can sit down and watch all four of these teams play, probably in relatively frigid temperatures, all for our enjoyment. God bless college football.

Wednesday

USCanada
Ball State at Bowling Green7:00
Kent State at Akron7:00

OK not nearly as good a MACtion night as the previous one but Bowling Green is way better than they probably had any right to be so far this season so there’s that.

Thursday

USCanada
Wake Forest at Duke7:30
South Alabama at Troy7:30
Mississippi Valley State at Bethune-Cookman7:30

I figured the USA-Troy game would be for the Sun Belt West title but both teams have stumbled a bit. Now, the loser is pretty much out and has no shot at a conference championship game appearance.

Friday

USCanada
Princeton at Dartmouth7:00
Boston College at Syracuse7:30
Colorado State at Wyoming8:00

Have you noticed there are never ranked teams playing on weeknights? It’s like the schedule makers understood the assignment. “Give them football but not great football teams.” Anyway, the hilariously awful bottom half of the ACC continues their march to…can’t even say mediocrity for this one. Loser will have it rough to become bowl eligible the rest of the way.

Saturday Early

USCanada
#12 Notre Dame at ClemsonNoon
Campbell at North CarolinaNoon
Wisconsin at IndianaNoon
#3 Ohio State at RutgersNoon
Texas A&M at #11 Ole MissNoon
Arkansas at FloridaNoon
Jacksonville State at South CarolinaNoon
#25 Kansas State at #7 TexasNoon
UConn at #19 TennesseeNoon

Quite a few decent games here. I figured Notre Dame-Clemson was going to be a much bigger game but Dabo decided he’s allergic to NIL. KSU-UT could decide one of the teams going to the Big XII Championship. And…if you had said Jacksonville State would be the favoured Cocks in this matchup I would have thought you were on serious drugs. Not the unserious ones.

Saturday Afternoon

USCanada
Georgia Tech at Virginia2:00
Arizona State at #18 Utah2:00
Army vs. #17 Air Force (in Denver)2:30
#10 Oklahoma at Oklahoma State3:30
Virginia Tech at #15 Louisville3:30
Illinois at Minnesota3:30
#14 Missouri at #1 Georgia3:30
#4 Florida State at Pittsburgh3:30
#23 James Madison at Georgia State3:30
#21 Tulane at East Carolina3:30
#9 Penn State at Maryland3:30
Auburn at Vanderbilt4:00
California at #6 Oregon5:30

OK things start to pick up here. One big game against two ranked teams where Mizzou could shock the entire college football world. Plus another NINE games involving ranked teams. It’s rare to see that many ranked teams in one timeslot. Realistically, all the ranked teams should worry at least a bit as you never know when the underdog can rise up and bite you in the ass. Except for Tulane. I have a feeling they will do just fine with East Carolina.

Saturday Primetime

USCanada
Louisiana Tech at Liberty6:00
Marshall at Appalachian State6:00
#22 Kansas at Iowa State7:00
#5 Washington at #24 USC7:30
SMU at Rice7:30
Purdue at #2 Michigan7:30
Kentucky at Mississippi State7:30
#13 LSU at #8 Alabama7:45
Miami at NC State8:00

Ah, the annual SEC on CBS primetime matchup between LSU and Alabama. A tradition unlike any other. Well, that tradition comes to an end on this night. Other than possible Ole Miss shenanigans, this game should determine the SEC West champion. The Huskies’ game against the Trojans looked much bigger a few weeks ago but USC has struggled mightily on defense and really should move on from Alex Grinch if they are to have any chance at becoming a true contender. Finally, it will be interested to see what happens if Liberty ends up the only undefeated Group of Five team. At this point, their schedule is so weak that they wouldn’t be able to pass most of the one-loss teams if that was the case. But there is a month left so you never really know what could happen.

Saturday Late Night

USCanada
Stanford at Washington State9:00
Boise State at Fresno State10:00
#16 Oregon State at Colorado10:00

Big Mountain West game. Even with Boise starting the season off pretty badly, they still have a very good shot at getting back to the Mountain West Championship game. The Broncos will need a win down in the valley in Fresno to keep their hopes alive. The Bulldogs held on for a big win last week over UNLV and are sitting second behind Air Force for that other conference championship spot. Stakes are high.

Hey, Watch This

LSU at Alabama (7:45, CBS) – Don’t mind the bizarre start time. It may be something they are trying out for the future since even the slightest edge can help in the ratings war. This is CBS’s only primetime pick of the season and yet again, it’s the Tigers and the Tide. Unless Ole Miss makes a run, this is for the SEC West crown. LSU is going to be trying their damndest to be the first ever two-loss College Football Playoff team but they need a lot of help. First off, they need to take care of business in one of the toughest stadiums to play in as a visitor against one of the toughest coaches to ever play against. Easy, right?

Missouri at Georgia (3:30, CBS) – Both ends of the SEC on CBS doubleheader are the top two games of the week. Just like they drew it up. Mizzou has played way above their heads all season. Not saying they have talent. They do but Eli Drinkwitz has, I don’t know, finally figured things out and is doing the best coaching of his career. And if the Tigers win here, boy oh boy, there is going to be a lot of talk about this in the college football media and you probably won’t hear of anything else.

Kansas State at Texas (Noon, FOX) – This and the next game could be swapped and no one would bat an eye. This feels like a Big XII semi-final as neither team probably has a shot at going to JerryWorld if they lose here. I am sure GUS JOHNSON and Joel Klatt are praying for a close game here. They switched to the 3:30 game last week and, lo and behold, the Big Noon Kickoff game ended up being a classic. Poor guys. There’s only so much excitement you can infuse into a blowout, you know? Unless you’re Joe Tessitore and everything is exciting.

Washington at USC (7:30, ABC/TSN+) – Washington is still undefeated. It feels like they are trying not to be but they have pulled out some close ones against *checks notes* Arizona State and Stanford. OK then. Look, if the Huskies don’t put at least 40 on the board here, they should consider it a loss. USC’s defense is atrocious. Their offense, on the other hand…they can put up points in bunches so U-Dub better watch out and not fall too far behind early in this one at the Coliseum.

Sickos Game of the Week

Iowa vs. Northwestern (at Wrigley Field) (3:30, Peacock) – Look, I know. I am breaking my own rules here. We can’t this game (legally) up here. But the over/under is 29.5. TWENTY-NINE-AND-A-HALF. That is so fucking absurd. And yes, I would still consider betting the under. This feels like a game straight out of 1912. Maybe it’s a good thing we can’t see it.

Hubba Bubba Blowout of the Week

UConn at Tennessee (Noon, TSN+/specialty pack) – I think we have to consider that last season’s UConn Huskies football squad’s performance may have been a fluke. This team is not good again. Not as bad as the years before 2022. But still bad. Plus, the Vols need the warmup for when they head to CoMo the following Saturday.

Wanna Bet?

How about my two upset picks last week? Yeah, they were shit. As were my Oklahoma, Clemson and Oregon State picks. Yeesh. Let’s just get on to the new week and see if I can somehow do better.

Tennessee 56 UConn 6

South Carolina 31 Jacksonville State 17

Texas 34 Kansas State 28

Virginia 41 Georgia Tech 23

Utah 31 Arizona State 14

Florida State 43 Pittsburgh 20

Minnesota 23 Illinois 13

Georgia 30 Missouri 24

Auburn 26 Vanderbilt 19

Appalachian State 48 Marshall 21

USC 56 Washington 46 (small upset)

Alabama 42 LSU 37

Oregon State 34 Colorado 16

As is the usual, I will be on X/Twitter/Elon Musk’s money-losing venture this Saturday. I always hope to be able to interact with other college football fans because that is part of the fun of all this. It’s one thing to watch the games: bantering with others while doing it makes it more enjoyable. As long as no one acts like a complete asshat. Then it brings everyone down. That’s why I stick with college football Twitter (which is honestly OK to pretty good) compared to, say, NFL Twitter, which can be rough. Or political Twitter which is a fucking cesspool. Anyway, many hours of college football coming up for all of us. Enjoy the games everyone!

What is wrong with the Week 3 College Football TV Schedule?

Nothing, really.

Now if you asked me what is wrong with Mel Tucker? Or Jeff Lebby? Or a host of past football coaches? I’d say plenty. I mean what the fuck is up with some people?

If you haven’t heard about ol’ Tucks, here’s a brief rundown:

Brenda Tracy, a well-known rape victim advocate (and victim herself), was hired to speak to the Spartans football team two years ago. Depending on who you believe, Tucker and Tracy became friends and then developed a bit of a romantic interest in each other. Tucker says this is true, Tracy denies this. He said, she said. Then last April, there was a phone call between the two where Tucker decided it should be phone sex (Tucker says they were both speaking in that manner) and then decided to whip it out and jerk off on the phone.

Tracy filed a formal complaint in December and then a report was filed in July to say that they should have a hearing to discuss whether Tucker violated a school policy on sexual misconduct. This hearing was to be next month. Now Tucker is suspended and probably will be fired with cause.

Crazy. And ridiculous. And even if it isn’t all true, the stuff Tucker admits paints him as a guy who can’t control himself. Then his letter on the matter makes him sound like a fucking idiot. No matter what, this is not going to turn out well for someone.

As for Jeff Lebby, he decided this was a perfect time to let his father-in-law, disgraced piece of shit former head coach Art Briles, on to the field after an Oklahoma victory on Saturday. Lebby just wanted his family on the field. Which includes Briles. I don’t know if Lebby understood the whole situation which makes him a complete dummy. He did apologize, though. Whether he meant it or did it while Brent Venables held a gun to his nuts, we will never know.

All of this is to say that there are some college football head coaches, past and present, who seem to think they can do whatever the fuck they feel like and get away with it. Again, even if Tucker is deemed not guilty, he admitted to cheating on his wife and pretty much seems OK with it. Lebby didn’t think once that “hey, my father-in-law, who has not been hired anywhere else since he was fired from Baylor for pretty fucking terrible reasons, should get to have Sooners gear on and come on the Sooners field and celebrate with the Sooners because…”…..why exactly? Oh, because he pretty much doesn’t give a shit. That’s why some of these players need to be told “Don’t be like your coach. He’s an asshole.”

Alright, enough of that nonsense. It’s schedule time.

Thursday

USCanada
Bethune-Cookman at #22 Miami7:30
Navy at Memphis7:30

Nothing much of note here but I am interested in seeing Navy truly for the first time this season (after watching very little of them earlier on).

Friday

USCanada
Army at UTSA7:00
Utah State at Air Force8:00

Interestingly enough, the other two military academies play on Friday night. So all three are done before Midnight on Friday. Odd. But fun that they are all pretty much getting national play on their own.

Saturday Early

USCanada
#3 Florida State at Boston CollegeNoon
Louisville vs. Indiana (in Indianapolis)Noon
Georgia Southern at WisconsinNoon
Liberty at BuffaloNoon
#14 LSU at Mississippi StateNoon
Wake Forest at Old DominionNoon
Iowa State at OhioNoon
#7 Penn State at IllinoisNoon
#15 Kansas State at MissouriNoon

Big games? Ah no. So devoid of big games that Big Noon Kickoff decided not to stick with Champaign as the site before the Illini host Penn State. They moved it to Colorado so they can keep that Deion Boner going. I guess you got to strike while the iron is hot.

Saturday Afternoon

USCanada
VMI at NC State2:00
Weber State at #12 Utah2:00
#10 Alabama at USF3:30
Northwestern at #21 Duke3:30
Western Michigan at #25 Iowa3:30
Virginia Tech at Rutgers3:30
South Carolina at #1 Georgia3:30
FIU at UConn3:30
Minnesota at #20 North Carolina3:30
East Carolina at Appalachian State3:30
#19 Oklahoma at Tulsa3:30
Tulane at Southern Miss4:00
WKU at #6 Ohio State4:00
ULM at Texas A&M4:00
NC Central at #24 UCLA5:00

A ton of choice here. The CW gets to show an afternoon game. Also a Pac-12 Network quardrupleheader. Well, a quadrupleheader here if you watch Pac-12 International on YouTube. See, the games on Pac-12 International are the Pac-12 Network national feed games. There are a couple other games that won’t be shown in Canada because they are regional only. Again, no big games here but we all remember what South Carolina did Between the Hedges back in 2019. If an upset of that magnitude happened again, it immediately changes the season and turns it on its head. Finally, Notre Dame is playing today…at home. But it’s on Peacock so no getting it here.

UPDATE: Thanks to reader William, I have found out about Fighting Irish TV (https://fightingirishtv.live/login). If you want to watch the game on Peacock, there’s your ticket.

Saturday Primetime

USCanada
Vanderbilt at UNLV7:00
#11 Tennessee at Florida7:00
James Madison at Troy7:00
Pittsburgh at West Virginia7:30
Bowling Green at #2 Michigan7:30
BYU at Arkansas7:30
Akron at Kentucky7:30
Syracuse at Purdue7:30
Georgia Tech at #17 Ole Miss7:30
FAU at Clemson8:00
TCU at Houston8:00
Wyoming at #4 Texas8:00
Hawaii at #13 Oregon8:00

No massive games but Tennessee travelling to The Swamp to face Florida bears some interest since the Vols have struggled there a lot in years past. Still no Harbaugh on the sidelines (unless you count Jack) as the Wolverines host Bowling Green who hopes to keep things relatively close. And lookie here…the Longhorn Network? That’s right. For the first time ever (as far as I can tell), LHN can be viewed (legally) in Canada. Hopefully Wyoming can play like they did against Texas Tech and keep this game competitive.

Saturday Late Night

USCanada
Colorado State at #18 Colorado10:00
Kansas at Nevada10:30
UTEP at Arizona11:00

Finally, the game that’s being played where both ESPN and FOX’s pregame shows were at…Colorado hosting mighty Colorado State. It must be since both networks were there. Don’t get me wrong, I totally get the hype but with two much bigger games coming up for the Buffaloes you think they would save this for the next couple of weeks. Or they might just camp out there until October. I mean why take the set down if you are just going to put it back up again a few days later?

Hey, Watch This!

South Carolina at Georgia (3:30, CBS) – Yes this is, arguably, the best game of the week. Kind of sad, not gonna lie. Saying that, if 2019 happens again, the SEC is seriously wide open. Don’t bet against the Gamecocks, even if they did look mediocre against North Carolina earlier this year. Or do because you think UGA will win. Either way.

Washington at Michigan State (5:00, Peacock) – This feels a bit icky but there is a ton of intrigue now with this one. A very good Huskies team against a team that will have to fight some adversity without their disgraced head coach. And it’s on Peacock of all places. NBC might have inadvertantly struck it rich by putting this game on the streaming service a while back.

Tennessee at Florida (7:00, TSN+/SP) – As I said above, the Vols, and many teams, have struggled in the hot and humid Swamp in Septembers past. Will it happen here? Eh, probably not. Man, how can a week be that devoid of big games?

Minnesota at North Carolina (3:30, TSN+/SP) – Um……well, it’s two undefeated teams so there’s that. Yeah, I got nothing.

Sickos Game of the Week

Vanderbilt at UNLV (7:00, CBSSN) – Look, there is a possibility that we see a 3-0 UNLV team by the end of Saturday night. So yeah, you could say the season is already a bit strange. And if Barry Odom wants a signature victory of sorts, this game is ripe for the picking. Or…OR…this could be a hilariously bad game that one team has to win. I am morbidly curious.

Hubba Bubba Blowout of the Week

Alabama at USF (3:30, ABC/TSN2) – Why is this game on ABC? Well, it’s not like there are a ton of strong contenders *waves wildly at the Games of the Week list*. Coming off a loss, Nick Saban is going to be uber-pissed. Which will make the rest of the coaches pissed. Which will make the players very angry. And they are going to take it out on a Bulls team who might not know what hit them until long after this one is over.

Wanna Bet?

Will this list be decent? After looking back at my picks last week, I am going to venture to say that’s a no.

Bethune-Cookman (+53.5) over Miami (but the U wins by 40)

Buffalo (+3.5) over Liberty (and the outright win)

LSU (-9.5) over Mississippi State

UConn (-7) over FIU

North Carolina (-7.5) over Minnesota

South Carolina (+27.5) over Georgia (and I think this will be relatively close but the Dawgs will hold on for the W)

Tulane (-13) over Southern Miss

Florida (+6.5) over Tennessee (the Vols win a VERY close one)

Vanderbilt (-4.5) over UNLV

Michigan (-40.5) over Bowling Green

Clemson (-24.5) over FAU

Oregon (-38) over Hawaii

Colorado (-23) over Colorado State

Spotty information so far for the specialty packs as I see some information but not all of it. It should all be up by tomorrow and should match what I have. Funny enough, TSN+ has their shit together and has their full schedule up (and has since Monday).

I’ll be on the TwiXter machine this Saturday (@TheBauceman) so you can interact mwith me there if you like. Or you can just sit in your favourite chair like a normal person and watch more than 14 hours of football unlike a normal person. Enjoy the games everyone!

So I wonder how he got back from Ireland? Oh, and the Week 1 college football schedule

I can’t see the Nebraska team and staff and everyone else who made the trip to Dublin allowing Frosty the Coachman to board the same flight as him. Probably safer for him anyway. He would have been thrown out of the plane over the Atlantic somewhere. All because of a horrible onside kick playcall that was not needed (among other poor coaching decisions). Just a complete fucking disaster for that team and now Frost’s hot seat is basically the surface of the sun.

Finally we have made it! Week One! And a full schedule. Hell, more than a full schedule it feels like. So much football and I will watch as much as I can because come January, it feels bad when it’s all gone. Let’s right to the (true) opening weekend schedule.

Thursday

USCanada
West Virginia at #17 Pittsburgh7:00 PM
Central Michigan at #12 Oklahoma State7:00 PM
Ball State at Tennessee7:00 PM
VMI at #22 Wake Forest7:30 PM
Alabama A&M at UAB8:00 PM
Louisiana Tech at Missouri8:00 PM
Penn State at Purdue8:00 PM
New Mexico State at Minnesota9:00 PM
Northern Arizona at Arizona State10:00 PM
Cal Poly at at Fresno State10:30 PM

As I said during the Week Zero schedule post, I would be including games that most Canadians won’t get up here, even with the specialty packs. I’m doing this because some have switched to an IPTV provider and can get some (or all) of these games. So while the NAU-ASU game might not look exciting (and it probably won’t be), I will still list it.

Nice to see the Backyard Brawl back as WVU and Pitt get a bit of a national spotlight for this one. Also, you have to wonder if Mike Gundy has the last game the Pokes played against CMU in his mind when the Chips won on a Hail Mary play that shouldn’t have even been allowed. Also, FOX will show a Thursday night game on the network to start the season. I wish they did that more often and they honestly could with the NFL’s Thursday Night Football package moving to Amazon Prime.

Friday

USCanada
Western Michigan at #15 Michigan State7:00 PM
Virginia Tech at Old Dominion7:00 PM
Temple at Duke7:30 PM
Illinois at Indiana8:00 PM
TCU at Colorado10:00 PM

3-hour windows. Good lord. Yes, TSN’s schedule says that the TCU-CU game starts at 10:30 but that’s not true. Stupid ESPN.

UPDATE: If you were planning on watching the WMU-MSU game on ESPN, you will have to move to ESPN2 as ESPN is now showing US Open tennis.

Saturday Early

USCanada
Colorado State at #8 MichiganNoon
Rutgers at Boston CollegeNoon
Buffalo at MarylandNoon
Delaware at NavyNoon
#13 NC State at East CarolinaNoon
North Carolina at Appalachian StateNoon
South Dakota State at IowaNoon
Sam Houston at #6 Texas A&MNoon
Richmond at Virginia12:30 PM

First full slate of Saturday games. Feels good. Nothing big here. The UNC-App State game could be the most intriguing as you don’t often see Power Five teams travel to Group of Five teams so there is some upset potential there.

Saturday Afternoon

USCanada
Bowling Green at UCLA2:30 PM
#3 Georgia vs. #11 Oregon (in Atlanta)3:30 PM
Bethune-Cookman at #16 Miami3:30 PM
North Dakota at Nebraska3:30 PM
Arizona at San Diego State3:30 PM
#24 Houston at UTSA3:30 PM
#23 Cincinnati at #19 Arkansas3:30 PM
UTEP at #9 Oklahoma3:30 PM
Tulsa at Wyoming3:30 PM
#25 BYU at USF4:00 PM
UC-Davis at California4:00 PM
Troy at #21 Ole Miss4:00 PM

Now we get to the meat of Week One. I am not really a fan of neutral-site games but let’s be honest: we are all watching a good portion of that UGA-UO matchup. Perhaps a College Football Playoff elimination game there (although we know one loss almost never kills a Power Five team’s chances). I’m interested to see what the brand new era of Sooner football will look like with Brent Venables now at the helm. And CBS opens with SDSU’s brand new stadium as they finally left the cavernous Murph for a more intimate viewing arrangement.

Also, you will notice a couple of other things. First, no games on ESPN2. As is usually the case, the U.S. Open tennis tournament is on ESPN2 all Saturday so that’s why there are no games airing there. It’s also why most of the TSNs aren’t available to show games this week. Secondly, the odd timing of the Pac-12 Network games. Well, thanks to the brains of Larry Scott (and others, yes, I know, but he was the commish), the Pac-12 Network has a national feed and regional feeds for all the schools. Each pair of schools shares a region. In this timeslot, the UCD-Cal game is actually only available on the P12N Bay Area feed. The BGSU-UCLA game is the P12N National game. Confused? Yeah it’s dumb.

Saturday Primetime

USCanada
Rice at #14 USC6:00 PM
#7 Utah at Florida7:00 PM
Illinois State at #18 Wisconsin7:00 PM
#5 Notre Dame at #2 Ohio State7:30 PM
SMU at North Texas7:30 PM
Memphis at Mississippi State7:30 PM
Utah State at #1 Alabama7:30 PM
Louisville at Syracuse8:00 PM
Colgate at Stanford8:00 PM

Game of the year in the opening weekend? You could argue that. The Irish and the Buckeyes face off in a massive non-conference matchup (I don’t know why I’m even saying that since the Irish will NEVER join a conference, right?). This will hopefully be worth the hype (and boy is ESPN/ABC going to push the hype to the next level for this one). So you could watch that OR you can watch Bama beat the snot out of USU. Your choice. Now watch that game be closer than the ND-tOSU game.

Saturday Late Night

USCanada
Idaho at Washington State9:30 PM
Boise State at Oregon State10:30 PM
Kent State at Washington10:30 PM

One of the more interesting matchups of the weekend goes down in Corvallis. I would normally say Boise is the favorite here but the Beavs have been a much improved team as of late. Also, there’s a true Hawaii Test if you can find a way to stream it (it starts at midnight).

Sunday

USCanada
Florida A&M vs. Jackson State (in Miami)3:00 PM
Tuskegee vs. Fort Valley State (in Montgomery)7:00 PM
LSU vs. Florida State (in New Orleans)7:30 PM

Speaking of interesting matchups, LSU-FSU is a juicy one down at the Superdome. Both teams are popular picks to improve this year. Let’s see how definitely Southern Brian Kelly fares in his opening contest in the SEC.

I am not sure about the two non-FBS games appearing on the specialty pack. Over the years, these opening Sunday games have been hit or miss so stay tuned.

Monday

USCanada
#4 Clemson at Georgia Tech8:00 PM

Geoff Collins wouldn’t be fired after Week 1 would he?

Big Games O’ The Week

Notre Dame at Ohio State (7:30, ABC/TSN2) – Sure there is another game that’s huge but this is THE big game of the week. I don’t remember the Irish starting with a game like this in recent memory and no, Texas doesn’t count. Now we have to hope ND doesn’t play like shit and makes the game unwatchable in the second half.

Georgia vs. Oregon (in Atlanta) (3:30, ABC/TSN2) – A new head coach for the Ducks up against a team trying to do the toughest thing in sports: repeat as champs. If you want, you can call this Game 1A of the Week (especially if you are a whiny SEC fan). A few questions will definitely be asked here, chief among them being can Bo Nix thrive outside the SEC, because last season he certainly didn’t thrive inside it.

Cincinnati at Arkansas (3:30, specialty pack) – If you had said three years ago that this would be the third best game of opening weekend, I would have drove you to the nearest AA or NA meeting. It’s a new college football world, though, and the Bearcats are still the Group of Five’s signature team until they are beaten. And Arkansas is slowly moving up the SEC ranks under possibly the most underrated head coach in the land, Sam Pittman. The Cats lost a lot of talent so this will give everyone a good idea as to what we can expect from them this season.

West Virginia at Pittsburgh (Thursday, 7:00, TSN2) – The Backyard Brawl is BACK! I am sure we will see references to 13-9 up until and throughout the game. Let’s see if the ‘Eers can put a bit of hurt on a Pitt team that believes they can repeat as ACC champs.

Psycho Game of the Week

Temple at Duke (Friday, 7:30, specialty pack) – Every week now instead of listing honourable mentions in the games of the week section, I will list a game that we all can get here but you would have to be a complete psycho to watch the entirety of (or you are a fan of one of the teams and even then). This week we have Temple travelling to the Carolinas to face Duke. Ugh. This feels like it could be a torture device used by the military. Anyway, unless it’s close, just avoid it.

The Degenerate Portion of Our Show

This section is the section for all you gambling degenerates out there and you KNOW WHO YOU ARE! I do bet on the NFL from time to time but I stopped gambling on college games. I think it took the fun out of it to be honest. Also, I sucked at it.

Alright, this season I am going to do something different. I am going to pick AGAINST THE SPREAD. That’s right! Make things a bit more difficult for me and gives all the more reason for you to not use these picks for your own gambling. I’ve warned you. Let’s begin.

Pittsburgh (-7.5) over West Virginia

Missouri (-19.5) over Louisiana Tech

Purdue (+3.5) over Penn State (with the Boilermakers winning outright)

Duke (-7.5) over Temple

TCU (-14) over Colorado

Appalachian State (+1.5) over North Carolina (with the Mountaineers winning outright)

San Diego State (-6) over Arizona

Oregon (+17) over Georgia (with the Bulldogs winning the game)

Florida (+3) over Utah (Gators win outright in upset)

Notre Dame (+17.5) over Ohio State (tOSU wins but game will be close)

Oregon State (-3) over Boise State

LSU (-3) over Florida State

And there you go! We are at Week 1 so rejoice, college football fans! I am so happy we have made it to this point. I will try to keep things updated over the next couple of days (if need be). I will be on Twitter (@TheBauceman) for a good portion of the action so check me there if you wish. And everyone enjoy the games!

Can anyone upend Bama? Week 3 College Football TV Schedule

nick-saban-angryI mean you have to say yes, right?  Not much feels worse than knowing the outcome (or having a very good idea of it) early on in the season.  And so far, Alabama has looked a whole lot better than any other college football team in the land.  Now if you recall my SEC preview, you will remember me saying Bama will drop a game during the regular season.  Some of you may scoff at that right now since it looks like they won’t lose at all until well into the 2022 season.  That’s the interesting thing about college football though: it is easily the most random of the well watched sports over here in this part of the world.  Many early polls look like complete ravings of dummies when at least 20% of the teams end up being terrible.  But there are always a few constants and that is that if you see a team in the Top 10, don’t be surprised if they win it all at the end of the season.  And that means Bama is always a contender these days.  And will be until Nick Saban decides to retire, probably when he’s like 91 years old.

Let’s stop talking about the Alabama Crimson Tide…well, specifically since they show up later in this post.  How about a look at the schedule for Week 3?  Isn’t that why you’re here?  I sure hope so because other than that (and my witty banter) I don’t know why you’d read this.

Thursday

US Canada
Alabama A&M at Bethune-Cookman 7:30 PM
Ohio at Louisiana 8:00 PM

Two games.  One is the introduction of a new member to a conference.  The other a game between a team just outside the Top 25 and one who just lost to an FCS school.  Bethune-Cookman has it’s first SWAC conference game after joining the conference along with Florida A&M.  Look, you can think what you want about Deion Sanders but he made a good point about this realignment the other day.  He said that the MEAC should consider joining forces with the SWAC to make one HBCU mega-conference in FCS.  Honestly, it’s not a bad idea, especially if they decide to allow their champ to go to the FCS playoffs once again.  As for the other game, I will just assume Louisiana will be up by about 30 by halftime.

Friday

US Canada
UCF at Louisville 7:30 PM

Only one game tonight.  This could be one that Scott Satterfield absolutely needs to keep his job.  Not saying the Cards are going to win but they have to stay close.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Michigan State at #24 Miami Noon
Albany at Syracuse Noon
Northern Illinois at #25 Michigan Noon
UConn at Army Noon
#8 Cincinnati at Indiana Noon
#16 Coastal Carolina at Buffalo Noon
Boston College at Temple Noon
Nebraska at #3 Oklahoma Noon
Western Michigan at Pittsburgh Noon
New Mexico at #7 Texas A&M Noon

Whoa!  TSN has games on every one of their channels to start the day.  Very impressive.  The expectation, at this point, is that the Albany-Syracuse game would be the one game not on a TSN channel (that could be put on there) but that could change.  I’m glad they are going this route because it means they aren’t relying on just showing the ABC game on multiple TSN channels since it kind of defeats the purpose of even having the contract to be able to show ABC/ESPN network games.  Honestly, the schedule isn’t great but that’s when you get some crazy good games so watch out for ones like MSU-Miami and Coastal-Buffalo.  As for Huskers-Sooners?  I don’t think this will harken memories of the old Big Eight.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
Purdue at #12 Notre Dame 2:30 PM
Georgia Tech at #6 Clemson 3:30 PM
Delaware at Rutgers 3:30 PM
Kent State at #5 Iowa 3:30 PM
#1 Alabama at #11 Florida 3:30 PM
SMU at Louisiana Tech 3:30 PM
Florida State at Wake Forest 3:30 PM
USC at Washington State 3:30 PM
Northwestern at Duke 4:00 PM
Mississippi State at Memphis 4:00 PM
Colorado State at Toledo 4:00 PM
Georgia Southern at #20 Arkansas 4:00 PM

Possible Game of the Year?  If Florida can keep this close after three quarters then watch out.  Also, Notre Dame gets the opportunity to be upset on regular NBC this week so that more people can watch.  I do wonder how many people signed up for Peacock for the one reason that one Notre Dame football game was on there this season.  If they can prove that a lot of people signed up for that then maybe it was all worth it.  Until I see evidence of that, I still believe streaming services really have no hope of competing with television channels.  That will most certainly change in the next decade but it’s slow moving for sure and will be for a while.  Oh, remember what I said about TSN in the first timeslot?  Yeah they are now down to one game in this timeslot (and then none after this).  Oh well, it’s still CFL season so have to expect those games to be shown on all the channels.  Between that, UFC, MLS and (ugh) NASCAR, there is no room for college football for the most part after the Noon timeslot until into November really.  It is what it is.  Kind of why I wish Sportsnet would figure out a way to get in on the action but they won’t because HOCKEY!

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Utah at San Diego State 7:00 PM
South Carolina at #2 Georgia 7:00 PM
#22 Auburn at #10 Penn State 7:30 PM
Virginia at #21 North Carolina 7:30 PM
Furman at NC State 7:30 PM
Central Michigan at LSU 7:30 PM
Tulane at #17 Ole Miss 8:00 PM
Stanford at Vanderbilt 8:00 PM

The Tigers-Nittany Lions game should be a good one and was a good choice by ABC to show in primetime.  Expect a few other games to be pretty good.  No UGA should mop the floor with the Gamecocks.  But many of the rest could be relatively close.  Utah-SDSU should be fun, UVA-UNC could be surprisingly close unless the Tar Heels are back to the form many thought they would be in and Stanford-Vandy are two schools that have high academic standards…OK that last one should be a blowout as well.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
#19 Arizona State at #23 BYU 10:15 PM
#14 Iowa State at UNLV 10:30 PM

Actually this is pretty good…well, except for one team.  Can’t win ’em all right?  ASU-BYU should be a barnburner and we will see if the Cougars are for real.  Iowa State should put away the Rebels by midnight.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Alabama at Florida (3:30, CBS) – Huge Game of the Year possibility here and possibly a harbinger of what the SEC season will look like (until Bama and Georgia meet up).  And it’s on the SEC on CBS which means we get….ugh….the return of Gary Danielson.  I believe Brad Nessler is one of the greatest college football play-by-play guys in history.  Danielson is just…not that good at his job.  His obvious love for everything Alabama I’m sure will shine through again in this one and his analysis of the game is lacklustre at best.  Honestly, it’s time to put him out to pasture and bring up Aaron Taylor and be done with it.

Auburn at Penn State (7:30, ABC) – How often do the top two games of the week end up in the two most important slots?  Surprisingly enough, I think it’s rare.  But this is classic college football for sure.  I can just see the old CFA logo on the top of the screen during the intro as this would be one of those matchups that you never see, even in bowl season.  Anyway, this will be the first big test for Bryan Harsin as he finally gets some serious competition in a potentially underrated Penn State team (if you can believe it).  With the Ohio State loss this past weekend, the Big Ten is a bit more open than people may have thought it would be this year so Penn State has to capitalize on these opportunities.

Arizona State at BYU (10:15, specialty pack) – Would it be an upset if the Cougs beat ASU?  Not really.  BYU might be almost as good as last year’s team which is scary, especially with a better schedule.  Could this team somehow make their way into the Top 10?  If they win games like this one, absolutely.  On the other foot, Arizona State has every opportunity to cease control in the Pac-12 South with USC being an utter mess.  Yes they still have UCLA and Utah to contend with but these kinds of games are important as well.  I’ll be honest: even though it’s BYU I’m surprised this game wasn’t put in primetime or the afternoon timeslot.  I guess at least this way most of the eyeballs will be here for college football fans so it’s a win for ESPN in that regard.

Cincinnati at Indiana (Noon, TSN3) – Sure the Bearcats weren’t that impressive against Murray State but it was Murray State so who cares.  This is one of the games that Cincy absolutely has to win if they want to have a fighter’s chance at the College Football Playoff.  They also have to have Indiana be really good so the Hoosiers starting 1-2 wouldn’t make that very easy for them.  It’s quite the conundrum Cincinnati is in really.  Indiana is really still looking to bounce back from being trounced by Iowa in Week 1 (although if Iowa ends up in the CFP, Hoosiers fans shouldn’t feel too bad about that).

Michigan State at Miami (Noon, ABC/TSN4) – Put your hand up if you thought the Spartans would look this impressive early on.  Now put them down because pretty much no one did.  Yes, their big win is over Northwestern who could actually be merely mediocre but still, things are looking a whole lot better after Mel Tucker’s debut last year.  This is the first test (in a lot of tests this season) and if they win this, they are easily in the Top 25 and have to be considered dangerous the rest of the way.  The Canes need something since they have had a rocky start to the surprise of no one.  Get boatraced by Bama?  Check.  Win a close one over App State?  Check.  Like they are following a script.  The script says they should win this easily but who knows.

Honourable mention: Purdue at Notre Dame (2:30, NBC), Nebraska at Oklahoma (Noon, FOX), Coastal Carolina at Buffalo (Noon, TSN1)

You bet!

I know.  I picked Houston over Rice, Iowa State over Iowa, USC over Stanford and Texas over Arkansas.  Sweet Jesus.  I did pick Oregon over Ohio State but who gives a shit with that track record.  Here are this week’s picks to hopefully take that awful taste out of the gambling mouth:

Coastal Carolina over Buffalo

Alabama over Florida

Penn State over Auburn

Arizona State over BYU

Notre Dame over Purdue

Cincinnati over Indiana

Miami over Michigan State

Oklahoma over Nebraska

SMU over Louisiana Tech

Texas A&M over New Mexico

UCF over Louisville

Again this is not the greatest schedule, on paper.  We know how that generally works out.  So buckle up because this should be good and you don’t know when the next great finish will be.  Enjoy the games everyone and have a great weekend!

Now we get to the important part of the schedule – the Week 7 College Football TV Schedule

OK so the last two weeks haven’t been exactly barnburners in terms of excitement.  We are bound to get a week or two like that but two in a row really wears you down (or at least the people that watch all 14 hours of action which includes the college football media and me I guess).  So what do we get this week?  Oh baby it’s quite the schedule as we get into the meat of conference play.  It should be better.  It has to be better…right?

That’s all I got.  What a shitty opener.  But hey who cares?  It’s not like this is for Saturday Night Live or something like that.  Anyway, let’s just get to the god damn schedule already, OK Bossman?  Alright let’s go.

Thursday

US Canada
Bethune-Cookman at NC Central 6:00 PM
Syracuse at NC State 8:00 PM
ULM at Texas State 9:15 PM

Three games.  Nothing big although Cuse-NCST could be an interesting ACC matchup that will ultimately end up determining nothing.

Friday

US Canada
Lafayette at Princeton 7:00 PM
Colorado State at New Mexico 8:00 PM
#20 Virginia at Miami 8:00 PM
Colorado at #13 Oregon 10:00 PM

Four games with two relatively important ones here.  Virginia-Miami could end up being for the ACC Coastal title, which is kind of a sad sentence to type.  Colorado could bury the Pac-12 even further if they can somehow beat Oregon.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#16 Michigan at Illinois Noon
Maryland at Purdue Noon
Rutgers at Indiana Noon
Toledo at Bowling Green Noon
South Carolina at #3 Georgia Noon
#23 Memphis at Temple Noon
Miami-OH at Western Michigan Noon
#6 Oklahoma vs. #11 Texas (in Dallas) Noon
Mississippi State at Tennessee Noon
Georgia Tech at Duke 12:30 PM

TSN showing at least more than one game in this timeslot which is a bit of an improvement.  No ACC Network game early though which makes no sense since GT-Duke is on a regional FOX network.  Honestly there are two games that seem important and the rest are not bad.  A pretty good noon schedule and a nice start to the day.  Back to the ACC Network thing, I think the biggest beneficiary has been the MAC since I don’t remember seeing this many MAC games on ESPNU on Saturdays ever before.  Props to them.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
Florida State at #2 Clemson 3:30 PM
Michigan State at #8 Wisconsin 3:30 PM
#1 Alabama at #24 Texas A&M 3:30 PM
BYU at USF 3:30 PM
#25 Cincinnati at Houston 3:30 PM sp logo
UConn at Tulane 3:45 PM
Rhode Island at Virginia Tech 4:00 PM
Iowa State at West Virginia 4:00 PM sp logo
Texas Tech at #22 Baylor 4:00 PM
UNLV at Vanderbilt 4:00 PM

The afternoon schedule might be the weakest of three timeslots (excluding late night).  That does not happen often.  Bama-TAMU could be an interesting game if the Aggies and their 12th man can keep things close late.  MSU-Wisky gets a BTN afternoon game.  Weird but I know BTN has done this in the past with Wisconsin.  They take an early Wisky game to satisfy the criteria of every Big Ten team having at least one conference game on Big Ten Network during the season.  This makes it so they don’t have to take a late season game that could be huge where ABC/ESPN or FOX would be loath to give them a game of that calibre (which may force a buyout of sorts which is a totally different conversation).

Other than the schedule is average.  TSN still isn’t in to showing games past the Noon timeslot.  ESPN’s games are going with the bizarre four-hour windows today.  I mean yeah this will make sure all the games fit in their timeslots but it eliminates a late night game.  Not gonna complain since I have come around on bizarre timeslots because of me not using the PVR anymore.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Fresno State at Air Force 7:00 PM
Ole Miss at Missouri 7:00 PM
#10 Penn State at #17 Iowa 7:30 PM
Louisville at #19 Wake Forest 7:30 PM
Navy at Tulsa 7:30 PM
Nebraska at Minnesota 7:30 PM
USC at #9 Notre Dame 7:30 PM
Arkansas at Kentucky 7:30 PM
#7 Florida at #5 LSU 8:00 PM

Oh baby.  Now this…this is a primetime schedule.  Florida-LSU.  PSU-Iowa.  USC-ND.  Almost every game (save maybe Arkansas-Kentucky) looks like a good game (on paper).  Now watch all of them be duds.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Hawaii at #14 Boise State 10:15 PM
Wyoming at San Diego State 10:30 PM
Washington at Arizona 11:00 PM

Even a pretty good late night sked.  This is quite the weekend I have to say.  Hawaii could throw a huge wrench into Boise’s New Year’s Six plans with a win.  Wyoming-SDSU should be a pretty even affair.  And Arizona, of all teams, could push ahead and become the leading contender in the Pac-12 South.  Could be a crazy end to a great day.  I plan on getting no sleep thanks to the 11:00 Eastern start to the Pac-12 After Dark game.  Geez.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Florida at LSU (8:00, TSN2) – Easily the biggest game of the week, despite the fact there are a bunch of good games.  A Florida win keeps the Gator train running towards Jacksonville and a mega-matchup with Georgia in the Cocktail Party.  An LSU win means we are running headlong into their matchup with Alabama and a potential for CBS to pay big bucks to get this game in primetime.  The loser has pretty much no chance at the College Football Playoff.  Don’t be surprised, though, if both these teams, at the end of the season, end up in the New Year’s Six no matter who wins this huge affair.

Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas) (Noon, FOX) – OK maybe UF-LSU isn’t easily the biggest game of the week.  This could be massive if the Longhorns can pull off the (minor) upset.  Have to call if the Big XII game of the year unless some other team keeps climbing the ladder like Baylor.  The Red River Shootout is always fun to watch because who the hell knows what you are going to get.  You could get a normal Big XII PEW PEW shootout or, for some odd reason, a defensive struggle.  Don’t be surprised if it happens.  I’m still waiting for TV to push for this game to be in primetime despite the fact that area of Dallas is dangerous after dark.  All about the bucks people (and I ain’t talking the Buckeyes).

Penn State at Iowa (7:30, ABC) – Iowa losing means Wisconsin would be in the catbird seat in the Big Ten West with only Minnesota and maybe Nebraska to challenge them.  A Penn State win can also set up one of the most unlikely games of the year: Minnesota-PSU in early November.  That could actually be a contender to be on ABC in primetime which would be huge for a program like the Gophers.  Anyway, back to this game: it should be close.  I could see it being like 16-13 which is exactly what ABC/Disney wants: a close game.

Memphis at Temple (Noon, TSN3) – This is where the Group of Five New Year’s Six spot (or at least my choice to represent the G-5) could change on a dime.  Memphis isn’t in the driver’s seat at this point..  But if the Tigers keep winning then they should end up passing Boise State and being the NY6 representative considering the schedule they have (which would include a win over UCF or Cincinnati in the AAC Championship game).  A Temple victory, however, opens the door for a few more teams.  This could lead to the doors being blown right off if Boise State loses during the regular season.

Michigan State at Wisconsin (3:30, BTN) – The Big Ten Network lucked out by getting this game.  Michigan State is still a pretty good team and Wisconsin is still in the Top 10.  This is why these conference networks are important and will be around for a while.  They have minimum game amounts for each team to appear on the network and BTN makes sure that at least one of those games is a conference game (as I mentioned above).  Now that I get BTN I kind of hope this is a really good game and maybe Sparty can pull off the upset…ok I am not going down that road again.

Honourable mention: Alabama at Texas A&M (3:30, CBS); Washington State at Arizona State (3:30, Pac-12 Network); USC at Notre Dame (7:30, NBC)

Some gambling fun and games

I’m sure most of us picked the Spartans to beat Ohio State last week, right?  I will say yes so I don’t feel that bad about that pick.  I got two of three upset picks correct (WOOHOO!) but some of the other picks were so very wrong.  Let’s erase that from our memories (I know that’s what I’m doing) and move on to this week’s picks.  Here we go:

LSU over Florida (but it will be close)

Alabama over Texas A&M (this will also be close I believe)

Wisconsin over Michigan State

Iowa over Penn State (mild upset?)

Oklahoma over Texas

Washington State over Arizona State

Notre Dame over USC

Memphis over Temple

Clemson over Florida State

Boise State over Hawaii

Western Michigan over Miami-OH

Last night’s game was a good one with Appalachian State holding on to beat Louisiana.  Basically it’s the Mountaineers’ conference to lose and if they run the table, it could be really interesting to see where they rank among the Group of Five teams for the NY6 spot.

Thursday Night Football and another NFL game.  I guess you could consider it a big game as Dandy Daniel Jones meets a guy who could be his father, Tom Brady.  The Giants go to Foxboro to face the Patriots in a game where a Giants win somehow gets them right into the NFC East competition at the amazing record of…3-3.  That division really isn’t that great which is shocking but true.  What happened to it?  I am sure one team (probably the Eagles) will run away with it and win eleven games but still…at this point it’s not a whole lot better than the AFC North or AFC South.  It’s pretty pathetic (at this point).

I will be busy this Saturday at least for part of the day since people have lives and want to GASP! schedule things on Saturdays in the Fall.  I don’t get it.  Why isn’t everyone else a college football fan like me and watch 14-plus hours of games and get nothing done because you are sitting and watching football all day and ah now I get it.  Oh well…I have never said I get a lot of shit done in the Fall since I don’t.  Anyway, everyone enjoy the games since I know I will!

The (insert team name here) ain’t played nobody Week 3 College Football TV Schedule

We hear it every year.  There is always one Top 10 team that ends up having a seriously easy schedule.  The 2019 candidate for this is Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers.  And man do they have an easy schedule.  Let’s be honest here: what will the Tigers easiest game be during the regular season?  That would be last Saturday’s game against Texas A&M.  So now let’s look at the rest of their schedule this season:

  • at Syracuse
  • vs. Charlotte
  • at North Carolina
  • vs. Florida State
  • at Louisville
  • vs. Boston College
  • vs. Wofford
  • at NC State
  • vs. Wake Forest
  • at South Carolina

Now you tell me the ranked teams on this list.  I’ll wait.

I mean you can make a bit of an argument that North Carolina or NC State could be ranked when the Tigers face them.  But honestly, they don’t have a seriously difficult team left on their schedule.  This is beyond ridiculous.  And it’s not Clemson’s fault.  I’m not saying that.  What I am saying here is that if Clemson goes undefeated, no big deal, they go to the Big Dance (football style).  But if they lose one game and they don’t blow the doors off everyone else they should be scrutinized just like any one-loss conference champion.  And they won’t be because they now have the cache that most schools do not have in 2019.  Which gets back to the question we need to answer every year: which four teams deserve to be in the College Football Playoff.  A schedule like this leaves very little wiggle room in my opinion.  Whether The Committee feels the same way, who knows.

Alright enough about Clemson’s schedule.  Let’s talk about EVERYBODY’S schedule (that we can see on on TV in Canada).  Let’s see if I can piece it together:

Friday

US Canada
North Carolina at Wake Forest 6:00 PM
Kansas at Boston College 7:30 PM
#20 Washington State vs. Houston (in NRG Stadium) 9:15 PM

Yep, no Thursday games again.  That ends next week.  Anyway, the first game is a non-conference game.  Yes, I am not joking.  The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons have scheduled a home-and-home non-conference set of games.  It has not caught on anywhere else.  And it shouldn’t.  It’s fucking dumb.  As for the late games, the over/under should be set at at least 80 since it should be a shootout.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Pittsburgh at #13 Penn State Noon
Furman at Virginia Tech Noon
Eastern Michigan at Illinois Noon
#21 Maryland at Temple Noon
Kansas State at Mississippi State Noon
Arkansas State at #3 Georgia Noon
Miami-OH at Cincinnati Noon
#6 Ohio State at Indiana Noon
Chattanooga at Tennessee Noon

So TSN is showing games this week but only in the early timeslot.  OK.  Problem is TSN1 and TSN4 are showing Pitt-PSU and TSN3 and TSN5 are showing ASU-UGA.  Are they fucking serious here?  They couldn’t spread it out, maybe show KSU-MSU on one of those channels?  No, have to show two games.  So ridiculous.  I mean who the hell is only getting two TSN stations in 2019?  Anyway, nothing huge here in terms of important games.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
New Mexico at #7 Notre Dame 2:30 PM
#24 USC at BYU 3:30 PM
UNLV at Northwestern 3:30 PM
Georgia Southern at Minnesota 3:30 PM
#2 Alabama at South Carolina 3:30 PM
East Carolina at Navy 3:30 PM
Stanford at #17 UCF 3:30 PM
Oklahoma State at Tulsa 3:30 PM
Memphis at South Alabama 3:30 PM
Army at UTSA 3:30 PM
Bethune-Cookman at Miami 4:00 PM
Arizona State at #18 Michigan State 4:00 PM
Colorado State at Arkansas 4:00 PM
SE Louisiana at Ole Miss 4:00 PM

USC-BYU and ASU-MSU could be low-key games of the week considering the schedule.  Conference USA has their second game ever on the NFL Network and they get Army.  Nice.  Smart move by this conference moving from beIn Sports to the NFL Network.  NBC is continuing with some of those 2:30 starts for Notre Dame games.  Considering they are playing New Mexico it will get a shit-ton of eyeballs if the game is somehow close going into the fourth quarter.  And finally, UCF has another chance to beat a Power Five team and have it mean almost nothing as they will still be kept out of the College Football Playoff.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
#9 Florida at Kentucky 7:00 PM
Kent State at #8 Auburn 7:00 PM
Lamar at #16 Texas A&M 7:00 PM
#1 Clemson at Syracuse 7:30 PM
Florida State at #25 Virginia 7:30 PM
TCU at Purdue 7:30 PM
SE Missouri State at Missouri 7:30 PM
Northwestern State at #4 LSU 7:30 PM
#12 Texas vs. Rice (in NRG Stadium) 8:00 PM
#5 Oklahoma at UCLA 8:00 PM

It was supposed to be a huge game at the Carrier Dome and College Gameday was supposed to be there and all that jazz.  Then the Orange shits the bed against Maryland (or gets destroyed by a superior Maryland team, whichever you prefer) and makes it so we have no ranked-on-ranked violence this week.  It’s amazing the perception of a week when this happens.  There could be some underrated close games if UCLA, Purdue, Florida State, Syracuse and Kentucky show up to play in this timeslot.  Otherwise, meh.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Portland State at #22 Boise State 10:30 PM
Texas Tech at Arizona 10:00 PM

Oh my this is honestly not that great.  I kind of hope for one of two things.  Either:

  • Portland State keeps it really close with the Broncos going into the fourth quarter.  Or
  • Boise puts like 63 points up on them in the first half.

No other scenarios will keep me awake.  At least there is a possibility for a shootout between the Red Raiders and the Wildcats.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Iowa at Iowa State (4:00, FOX Sports One goddammit) – A lot of decent games this week.  But not one that could be even considered close to a Game of the Year candidate.  College Gameday is heading to Ames for the first time and it will be a big deal for the state of Iowa.  Unfortunately none of us will be able to see this.  Cy-Hawk should be a good game this season and really there is no favourite here.

Arizona State at Michigan State (4:00, FOX) – Let’s be honest here: this week’s schedule is actually pretty poor and may be worse than last week’s all things considered.  Michigan State has looked good so far this season but ASU has only looked slightly above average so far.  If the Sun Devils show up this could be a barnburner.  Bet the under.

Florida at Kentucky (7:00, specialty pack) – Remember what the Wildcats did last year to Florida?  Do not be surprised if, despite the fact UK is not the UK of last year, they still beat the Gators or at least give them a good game.  And it wouldn’t be a huge surprise since Florida has only looked average so far this season.  It’s like we are just waiting for everyone to really get going for the Fighting Dan Mullens.

Washington State vs. Houston (in NRG Stadium) (Friday, 9:15, TSN2) – This could be very interesting.  Wazzu has to be considered a dark horse contender in the Pac-12 North and I wouldn’t be surprised if they go a long way into the season undefeated.  Houston is still a premier Group of Five team and if they ever get it together, this could be the game they announce they are back as a team to reckon with in the American.  If it’s less than 80 points in this one I will be, quite honestly, shocked.

Stanford at UCF (3:30, specialty pack) – To be honest I could have stopped the list at four games.  Or three.  Or just skipped it altogether.  UCF absolutely needs this game if they are to make any argument for the College Football Playoff, let alone the New Year’s Six.  Stanford is just trying to stop this slide since they haven’t looked that good all season so far.  Well at least as good as a contender in the Pac-12 North should look.

Honourable mention: USC at BYU (3:30, ABC); Hawaii at Washington (7:30, Pac-12 Network); Maryland at Temple (Noon, CBS Sports Network).

Some gambling fun and games

Alright let’s see if I can do well this week since last week went, um, less than well:

Washington over Hawaii

BYU over USC (Upset?  Upset.)

Temple over Maryland (serious upset!)

Stanford over UCF (Am I getting carried away at this point?)

Washington State over Houston

Michigan State over Arizona State

Iowa over Iowa State

Florida over Kentucky

Texas over Rice

Georgia over Arkansas State

Virginia over Florida State

I see no information on the specialty packs but I am assume it will be up very soon.  This is the kind of thing that happens when there are no games on Thursday night.

Thursday Night Football tonight on CTV2 and all the TSNs except TSN2 which is probably showing Golf Talk or Poker or something like that.  Buck and Aikman!  I am still waiting for them to do Smackdown promos since I am sure Buck will be SO happy to do those.  Which I am sure will lead to Buck and Aikman teaming up with John Cena and The Rock to face four jabronies at Wrestlemania.

Anyway, enjoy the games everyone and have a great week!

Ladies and gentlemen…it’s time….the Week 1 College Football TV Schedule!!!!!!!!

The time is finally here!  Yes there was a big matchup and a couple good games this past Saturday but this is truly the start of the season.  At least ESPN doesn’t completely forget about Week Zero like they used to.  I wonder how Week Zero will continue to operate in the future.  Will we continue to get a big game to start the year along with a couple other games (and one involving Hawaii)?  Who knows.  It was a nice taste this past weekend…now we need the full spread.

So enough of this yappin’…let’s get to why you’re all here.  The first actual college football schedule of the season.  Here we go!

Thursday

US Canada
UCLA at Cincinnati 7:00 PM
Florida A&M at #17 UCF 7:30 PM
Georgia Tech at #1 Clemson 8:00 PM
Texas State at #12 Texas A&M 8:30 PM
#14 Utah at BYU 10:15 PM

We get right into the thick of it with the Holy War late at night.  And it’s the second half of a TSN doubleheader to start the season.  Noice!  Also, the ACC Network’s college football debut is this night as Georgia Tech tries learning an offense that isn’t the option against the defending national champs.  I’m sure that will go over well.  And finally, Texas State alum Alexis Texas gave her team a quick 18-second speech to try and pump them up for their opening game against Texas A&M.  Now many of those players will type ‘Alexis Texas’ into Pornhub and spend time not going over their playbooks.  Great work there Alexis.

UPDATE #2 : Thanks to nationscapital, we now know that the ACC Network is on Rogers (and presumably Eastlink).  I am checking Bell schedules to see if that’s the case there too).

Friday

US Canada
Rice at Army 6:00 PM
#19 Wisconsin at USF 7:00 PM
UMass at Rutgers 7:15 PM
Utah State at Wake Forest 8:00 PM
Purdue at Nevada 9:30 PM
Colorado State vs. Colorado (in Denver) 10:00 PM

There could be three or four upsets (kind of here)…well at least Group of Five teams beating Power Five teams.  I would say USU has the best chance here to pull off the win.  Another TSN doubleheader so a good start to the season by them since they are not known for showing a ton of college football until October or so.  Oh and Rutgers plays a game.  Against UMass.  Yeah.  Technically it’s college football but that game would struggle to get an audience during Week Zero.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Ole Miss at Memphis Noon
East Carolina at NC State Noon
Howard at Maryland Noon
Akron at Illinois Noon
Indiana vs. Ball State (in Indianapolis) Noon
South Alabama at #24 Nebraska Noon
Mississippi State vs. Louisiana (in New Orleans) Noon
Florida Atlantic at #5 Ohio State Noon
Toledo at Kentucky Noon

A lot of games here.  Some interesting fare but nothing super important to be honest.  Ole Miss-Memphis could be the start of a dream season for the Tigers or a complete destruction of my Group of Five New Year’s Six prediction.  Would love to see FAU give tOSU a scare at the Shoe and don’t be surprised if Toledo makes things difficult for Kentucky.  Finally, watch for Louisiana’s rushing attack.  They have one of the best set of running backs in the country and this could be a bit of a coming out party for them (especially Trey Ragas).

UPDATE #3: Twitter reader @pinopanza76 has notified me that all the TSN2 games have changed from ESPN to ABC all day, except for the late night game where TSN2 will still show the ESPN game (Fresno State-USC).

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#2 Alabama vs. Duke (in Atlanta) 3:30 PM
Idaho at #15 Penn State 3:30 PM
Holy Cross at Navy 3:30 PM
North Carolina vs. South Carolina (in Charlotte) 3:30 PM
Georgia State at Tennessee 3:30 PM
Virginia Tech at Boston College 4:00 PM
Northwestern at #25 Stanford 4:00 PM
Portland State at Arkansas 4:00 PM

Do things really get better here?  Not really.  Northwestern-Stanford in the Nerd Bowl could be the underrated game of the week and could end up being very important down the line.  Bama-Dook shouldn’t be close.  Some of these neutral-site games planned years advance look silly once they finally come to fruition.  The ACC Network, on their first weekend, could end up having one of the best games of the week as VaTech and BC usually play each other tough.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
#3 Georgia at Vanderbilt 7:30 PM
#16 Auburn vs. #11 Oregon (in Arlington) 7:30 PM
Virginia at Pittsburgh 7:30 PM
Middle Tennessee at #7 Michigan 7:30 PM
Missouri at Wyoming 7:30 PM
Georgia Southern at #6 LSU 7:30 PM

Alright this is better.  I mean I know Week One is overhyped because it’s the start of the new season (sorry Week Zero) but the games rarely match that hype.  Auburn-Oregon is a huge game where whoever wins has to be considered an early contender.  LSU should beat Georgia Southern but the Eagles aren’t pushovers.  It’s less than the normal amount of games usually in a primetime schedule.  No game on FOX, no games on ESPN2 all day and single games in almost all the BTN and SECN timeslots lends to this.  So hopefully at least one of these games has a great ending.  Just a note that the Florida State-Boise State game has been moved to Noon and will air on ESPNEWS so we will not get it in this area.  As of right now Georgia Southern-LSU will be on both ESPNU and SEC Network which doesn’t matter to us at this point.  However, there is a possibility another game will be put in the ESPNU spot.  Stay tuned for that.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
Fresno State at USC 10:30 PM

Hey at least there’s one game in this timeslot right?  This could end up being a very good game meaning you have to stay up and watch it.  That’s the rules.  I don’t make them up, I just try to enforce them (on myself).

Sunday

US Canada
Jackson State vs. Bethune-Cookman (in Montgomery) 3:00 PM
Houston at #4 Oklahoma 7:30 PM

So FOX is officially (for now) out of the Labour Day Sunday college football business.  I’m not surprised since there isn’t much that could go here that would stack up against UH-OU.  I wonder if we will see another Cougs upset.  A reminder that it is our first glimpse of Drunk Uncle Dana Part II: Energy Drink Boogaloo.

Monday

US Canada
#9 Notre Dame at Louisville 8:00 PM

Hey finally we don’t have the shitshow that occurs because of the Labour Day Classic CFL doubleheader.  Thank fucking God.  Why they moved the Argos-Ti-Cats game to primetime is beyond me but hey, try something new and see if it works, right?

As for the game itself, it should be over sometime during the second quarter but the Irish have a habit, during good seasons, of playing at least one game against a team they should destroy and keeping it close and making Notre Dame fans drink even more than they normally would.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Auburn vs. Oregon (in Arlington) (7:30, ABC) – This is EASILY the game of the week and there really isn’t another game that’s close.  A must watch for even a casual college football fan.  It’s a huge game for both teams as the winner becomes an instant contender and will be in the College Football Playoff conversation.  Yes Auburn has to tackle the super difficult SEC West and Oregon has to deal with the Pac-12 North minefield but both teams need a hot start to get momentum into conference play.

Houston at Oklahoma (Sunday, 7:30, ABC) – We all remember what Houston has done the past few years.  And we know how the Sooners played against Army last season.  It will be intriguing to see how Dana Holgorsen deals with the Sooners in this one.  Don’t be surprised if this game is close going into the fourth quarter.

Utah at BYU (Thursday, 10:15, TSN5) – HOLY WAR TIME!  I know there are some that want to scrap the Holy War moniker but I love it.  This is a serious rivalry that people tend to forget because of East Coast bias.  This should be serious fun and the fans in Provo are usually good.  What they should do is serve caffeine for this one game to see how the kids deal with it.  I could see a riot.

Boise State vs. Florida State (in Jacksonville) (Noon, ESPNEWS so yeah no) – Yeah, some neutral site.  But let’s explain this a bit further.  This is part of a home-and-home series.  Next year’s game will be in Boise so this one is in Florida.  Why it was moved to Jacksonville rather than keep it in Tallahassee is unknown and honestly makes no sense to me.  This should be good (as most Boise games are) and will go a long way to showing whether the Noles are back (oh god back to this again).

UPDATE: As was stated above, thanks to the incoming hurricane, this game has been moved up seven hours to Noon and will now air on ESPNEWS.  This sucks for Canadians as now we miss this game which could end up being a good one.  It’s also being moved to Tallahassee as well so no longer a neutral-site game despite the fact it really never was one in the first place.

Northwestern at Stanford (4:00, FOX) – At least there wasn’t a debate to put this game in the Top Five of the week.  Hopefully we do get Gus and Joel for this one since I think they would be wasted doing FAU-tOSU.  The Nerd Bowl should be a good one and the winner could end up being a dark horse contender to win their conference (or at least be flirting with the Top 10).  At least FOX got one good game this weekend since their Week One history is pretty bleak.

Honourable mention: Notre Dame at Louisville (Monday, 8:00, TSN1/TSN4/TSN5); Georgia at Vanderbilt (7:30, specialty pack); Georgia Tech at Clemson (Thursday, 8:00, specialty pack)

Some gambling fun and games

Back to this bullshit.  Remember, I pick games straight up.  No against the spread stuff here.  Also, if you value your money, don’t copy these picks:

Notre Dame over Louisville

Oregon over Auburn

Stanford over Northwestern

Utah over BYU

Oklahoma over Houston

Florida State over Boise State

Clemson over Georgia Tech

Georgia over Vanderbilt

Ohio State over Florida Atlantic

LSU over Georgia Southern

Kentucky over Toledo

Five straight days of college football starts tonight!  I think I’m ready for it.  I say that every year but it’s always a bit of a process to get into the mindset.  At this point there is nothing on the specialty pack guides (that I can see).  I am pretty sure what I have in the schedule is correct, though.  I foresee no updates or maybe one or two depending on the primetime ESPNU situation.  I hope that’s the case since I hate updates.  I will be on the Twitter machine for a good part of the next five days.  My Twitter handle is now @TheBauceman.  I finally changed it so 1978 doesn’t appear which was stupid in the first place.  Then some people couldn’t find me and it turned into a mini-debacle.  Ah, technology.

Soon enough we will get back into the same old rotation of college recap-college schedule-NFL schedule.  I won’t be doing NFL recaps since I put some recap info in the schedule along with playoff outlooks later in the season.  Plus there are so many ways to get an NFL recap, it makes no sense for me to reinvent the wheel.  Alright have a great time watching all this glorious college football you crazy Canadian college football fans.  It should be a good time.  Have a great weekend!

It never comes out in the wash – Week 11 College Football TV Schedule

The College Football Playoff rankings came out on Tuesday evening.  And of course there is a spot of controversy.  Not with the Top 6: those really can’t be debated at this point.  It’s 7 through 10 that’s a bit of an issue to some.  LSU being #7 is irking some people.  And not so much about LSU.  It’s about the fact that West Virginia is down at #9 that upsets quite a few people.  What this kind of says is this: any loss to Alabama by any amount is much more respectable than a win over Texas.  The Tigers could have lost by 50 and I have a feeling they still would have been ranked ahead of the Mountaineers.  Fair?  What’s really fair about rankings in college football to begin with?

Also, the idea that this “all comes out in the wash” is bogus.  It never does.  Things don’t correct itself by the end of the season.  Certain programs will be somewhat “protected” by The Committee since to some it may feel weird to rank a team not known for its success (for example, Washington State) over a team that is essentially a blueblood (think LSU).  This will always be the case (or at least most of the time).  That won’t change.  The beauty contest aspect of these rankings will always exist so some teams just have to have more evidence that they are a better team.  All there is to it.

Another point I have to make is that we are in the middle of MACtion.  Great for people watching on TV.  Not so much for people that want to attend these games.  Tuesday night’s game between Kent State and Buffalo was a perfect example.  Not many people there for a team that is now 9-1 and has to still be considered a dark horse contender for the Group of Five spot in the New Year’s Six.  And as I have said before, it is the cost of getting attention on your conference.  The MAC has been doing this for over a decade now.  The Sun Belt now goes in on that as well.  Even the ACC has Thursday night games almost every week of the season.  It isn’t always good for fans but if you want to be on TV nationally sometimes you have to bite the bullet.  Again, this may change with the advent of other platforms but until that happens (and don’t expect it for at least another five years or so) this has to be the way things go.  I’m fine with it for selfish reasons: it means I get football every day for almost a month.  WOOHOO!

Alright let’s get right to the schedule!

Thursday

US Canada
NC Central at Bethune-Cookman 7:00 PM
Wake Forest at #14 NC State 7:30 PM

This could end up being a stumbling block for NC State for the New Year’s Six.  Wake Forest is not a team to take likely.  However, if it gets out of hand early I am switching to the Thursday Night Football game.  I can’t believe I am saying that but I will do it.

Friday

US Canada
Louisville at #13 Syracuse 7:00 PM
#23 Fresno State at Boise State 10:15 PM

The first game might be over by the end of the first quarter.  I am sure Dino Babers is shooting for 80 points in this game.  The nightcap will be far more entertaining and may eliminate one Group of Five contender if Boise State can get the win.  Would this be considered an upset?  I honestly don’t know.

Saturday Early

US Canada
Wisconsin at #20 Penn State Noon
Ole Miss at Texas A&M Noon
#10 Ohio State at #18 Michigan State Noon
South Carolina at #15 Florida Noon
Lafayette at Army Noon
Maryland at Indiana Noon
Illinois at Nebraska Noon
Navy at #12 UCF Noon
Tulsa at Memphis Noon
Vanderbilt at Missouri Noon
North Carolina at Duke 12:30 PM

Not a whole lot in the early window unless Michigan State can make it a game against Ohio State.  Not sure that will happen but it is in East Lansing and tOSU has struggled as of late.  Wisconsin could give Penn State problems and UCF continues their march to regular season perfection again.  Also, we have an early CBS game which is OK I guess.  It’s obvious CBS does not get the top two picks when this occurs since Ole Miss-TAMU is not the second biggest SEC game this week.  Not even close.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
Liberty at Virginia 3:00 PM
Oklahoma State at #6 Oklahoma 3:30 PM
#16 Mississippi State at #1 Alabama 3:30 PM
Northwestern at #21 Iowa 3:30 PM
New Mexico at Air Force 3:30 PM
#4 Michigan at Rutgers 3:30 PM
#8 Washington State at Colorado 3:30 PM
Purdue at Minnesota 3:30 PM
Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh 3:30 PM
#11 Kentucky at Tennessee 3:30 PM

A little bit better although thinking Mississippi State will beat Alabama is not a good bet to make (watch them win now).  Bedlam and Wazzu-Colorado could end up being good games.  Don’t sleep on surprising ACC Coastal leader Pitt in their game against Virginia Tech.

As of right now the Liberty-Virginia game is not showing up anywhere but I assume it will be there because they seem to be showing all the FOX Sports Regional ACC games this season.

UPDATE: Liberty-UVA is now appearing on the specialty packs.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Temple at Houston 7:00 PM
USF at Cincinnati 7:00 PM
#24 Auburn at #5 Georgia 7:00 PM
Miami at Georgia Tech 7:00 PM
Florida State at #3 Notre Dame 7:30 PM
Texas at Texas Tech 7:30 PM
Southern Miss at UAB 7:30 PM
#7 LSU at Arkansas 7:30 PM
#2 Clemson at #17 Boston College 8:00 PM

Two fairly big games in primetime this weekend.  Auburn-Georgia could be good (especially when you consider last year’s outcome).  Boston College could put the College Football Playoff on its ear with a win at home over Clemson.

As for TSN, let’s see what they are showing today from 3:30 on that negates any opportunity to show college football:

  • 4 Nations Cup Hockey.  OK that’s fine considering our obsession with any hockey up here.
  • NASCAR.  Contractually obligated.  TSN shows a lot of NASCAR so this is fine.
  • Tennis.  TSN is really upping their tennis coverage I have noticed.
  • Top 10 Playoff Comebacks.  OK this is getting bad now.
  • CFL Wired.  What?
  • World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.  More hockey.
  • Repeat of a Premier League Soccer game.  Seriously?
  • SC Top 10 Presents.  This feels so ESPN-like with all this filler.
  • SportsCentre, SC, Must See SC.  None of this is must-see I assure you.
  • NBA game.  OK I will give them that one.
  • More SportsCentre.
  • More SC.
  • UFC Fight Night with some guy named “The Korean Zombie.”

Honestly, this is a joke.  They could easily fit one more game in.  But no.  This is like Sportsnet showing all the Hockey Night in Canada games again the next day because they have nothing else to show.  Except in this case TSN does have the opportunity to show other live sports (which is the only thing that really moves the needle these days).  Ugh.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
UNLV at San Diego State 10:30 PM
Colorado State at Nevada 10:30 PM
California at USC 10:30 PM

Nothing huge here to be honest although, technically, USC still has a good shot at winning the Pac-12 South.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Clemson at Boston College (8:00, ABC) – At least this is the game with the most hype attached to it.  BC has a chance in the biggest game since some guy named Matt Ryan was quarterback there.  A Clemson victory is kind of ho hum and keeps the Tiger Train rolling.  But if the Eagles win, ho boy this gets interesting.  Plus Steve Addazio could get like a 15-year extension out of it which I am sure no one would complain about in the Boston area.

Auburn at Georgia (7:00, specialty pack) – ALL ABOARD THE GUS BUS!  OK it’s more like a roller coaster or one of those dune buggy rides through the desert.  This has not been smooth for Auburn this year at all.  I don’t really expect Auburn to pull off the upset like they did last season but you never know.  UGA won’t be complacent because they won the SEC East already since any loss probably boots them out of College Football Playoff contention.

Mississippi State at Alabama (3:30, CBS) – I guess I have to put this game here somewhere since it is two ranked teams facing off against each other.  Man if the Bulldogs somehow pull off this upset…it would be such chaos (which I adore in college football).  Doubtful it happens.  I’m starting to wonder how much Brad Nessler drinks after calling games since he has barely had any exciting games since replacing Uncle Verne last year.

Ohio State at Michigan State (Noon, FOX) – Speaking of games where an upset would cause a bit of carnage, here’s one.  Everyone is expecting tOSU to mop the floor with Sparty here.  Then again, it’s in East Lansing, Ohio State isn’t as good this season, and if there’s snow, watch out because things could get weird.  This may be me hoping more than anything that something crazy happens in these top four games.

Wisconsin at Penn State (Noon, ABC) – Let’s see how fucked up the Big Ten West can get.  Their champ might be barely over .500 by the time conference championship week comes around.  Not that none of the teams are good.  Four of them (Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern, Purdue) are quite good.  But when they beat each other up it causes this.  I would say it’s the same for the ACC Coastal but that is definitely not the case.

Honourable mention: Texas at Texas Tech (7:30, FOX); Northwestern at Iowa (3:30, FOX); Fresno State at Boise State (Friday, 10:15, specialty pack)

Some gambling fun and games

My picks last week were fantastic.  Except for picking Virginia Tech over Boston College and Texas over West Virginia (at least that one was close).  I even called the Pitt win.  Not doing too badly this season.  I hope I haven’t jinxed myself.  Here are this week’s picks.

Ohio State over Michigan State

Penn State over Wisconsin

Iowa over Northwestern

Boise State over Fresno State

Texas over Texas Tech

Georgia over Auburn

Alabama over Mississippi State

Clemson over Boston College

USC over California

USF over Cincinnati

Oklahoma over Oklahoma State

Alright Thursday Night Football so what sad sack teams are playing…wait a minute.  Carolina and Pittsburgh?  It’s funny how since it moved to FOX that the schedule got way better.  I guess CBS and NBC aren’t as important as FOX?  Or maybe FOX just made sure some decent matchups were there most weeks so people would actually watch.  Panthers-Steelers?  That’s a good matchup.  I have a feeling I will end up there anyway considering the college football schedule tonight.

All college football, all Saturday and into Sunday.  Am I crazy?  Possibly.  But remember, we only get this like three months of the year really.  The other nine consist of bowl games, Week Zero, the national championship, some college all-star games and a lot of time without college football.  So I will take the time now to watch knowing I will be doing other things in the non-college football days ahead.  Anyway, enjoy the games everyone!

OK I think that this has gone on long enough – Week 9 College Football TV Schedule

OK we all know the facts here.  UCF is a good football team.  They have won 20 games in a row.  They were the only undefeated team last season.  They weren’t in the Top 4 so had to “settle” for playing Auburn in the Peach Bowl and, despite the close score, dominated most of the game.  This season, they are undefeated again.  They seem to have topped out at #10 though in the AP Poll (I have them topped out at #7 it seems as well).  People are angry.  Athletic Director Danny White says it’s ridiculous.  I get why they are upset.  But I think this story is getting a little tired don’t ya think?

We get it Knights coaches, players, alumni, current students, administrators, etc.  You are sick of the lack of respect.  Yes we know that college football is a bit of a beauty pageant.  You want to know how to win a beauty pageant?  Look the best and be not dumb (especially now that the swimsuit portion has been axed).  How do you look the best in college football?  Be in a Power Five conference.  Is it fair?  Not really.  I mean Kansas is fucking horrible at football but because they are in the Big XII and there’s no promotion/relegation in college football, they get to have a better chance at a playoff than the UCFs, Boise States and Northern Illinoisssssss of the world.  And not being dumb?  Has nothing to do with intelligence in college football.  It’s about winning.  So don’t be a loser.  If there is justice in the world, Boise State, UCF and a few others get invited to a Power Five conference in the next decade.  As for now, UCF has to hope for utter chaos above them.  If it’s 2007 all over again then hell yeah they should be in.  Otherwise, sorry for your damn luck.

Well that was depressing.  On to better matters (I hope).  The schedule!

Thursday

US Canada
Ball State at Ohio 7:00 PM
Toledo at Western Michigan 7:00 PM
#25 Appalachian State at Georgia Southern 7:30 PM
Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech 7:30 PM

We are starting to get into some serious MACtion and Fun Belt games now.  Soon enough we will have football every day and we have the MAC and Sun Belt to thank for it.  I’m sure I have gone over this before but there is almost never a point where I feel there is too much college football on, especially when we get into football every day season (Spoiler Alert: it starts tonight!).  I understand the MAC’s point about having too many games on weekdays.  It is a tough debate to pick a side on.  For now, I will just say I am happy that I get weekday football and leave it at that.  Oh, by the way, a test for App State trying to sneak into that Group of Five spot tonight with their game against resurgent Georgia Southern.  Also, there’s Techmo Bowl for you ACC lovers.

Friday

US Canada
Louisiana Tech at Florida Atlantic 6:30 PM
Miami at Boston College 7:00 PM
Wyoming at Colorado State 10:00 PM
#23 Utah at UCLA 10:30 PM

Well we have the Red Bandana game on Chestnut Hill so that’s always an interesting story to follow.  Problem is FAU and CSU have done way worse than most people expected.  Maybe the Friday Pac-12 After Dark game will be good as Utah continues their slow push to the Pac-12 South Division title.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#2 Clemson at Florida State Noon
#20 Wisconsin at Northwestern Noon
Purdue at Michigan State Noon
Army at Eastern Michigan Noon
Bethune-Cookman at Nebraska Noon
Texas Tech at Iowa State Noon
UMass at UConn Noon
Vanderbilt at Arkansas Noon
Wake Forest at Louisville Noon
North Carolina at Virginia 12:30 PM

I am liking the fact that the FSN Regional ACC games are showing up each week.  It gives us an idea of what it will be like when the true ACC Network begins.  What I am wondering about is how they will incorporate the Raycom game of the week into this since right now it’s on WSBK, WNLO and a few other stations.  I pray there are no hiccups with that but me thinks my prayers will not be answered.

As for the schedule, it’s pretty meh.  Nothing really stands out except perhaps Wisconsin being on upset alert going to Ryan Field to play Northwestern.  Nebraska should also have a winning streak (yes, a WINNING STREAK!) by around 3:30 this Saturday.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#21 USF at Houston 3:30 PM
Arizona State at USC 3:30 PM
#9 Florida vs. #7 Georgia (in Jacksonville) 3:30 PM
Kansas State at #8 Oklahoma 3:30 PM
Cincinnati at SMU 3:30 PM
Illinois at Maryland 3:30 PM
#18 Iowa at #17 Penn State 3:30 PM
Northern Illinois at BYU 3:30 PM
Duke at Pittsburgh 3:30 PM
#12 Kentucky at Missouri 4:00 PM

A massive CBS game overshadows pretty much everything in this timeslot.  And lo and behold it’s the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party!  CBS (and more importantly, Brad Nessler) gets a gift from the college football gods and gets this game between two Top 10 teams in their SEC on CBS afternoon timeslot.  It should be a good one.  At least on paper it looks that way.

And oh good god we have another reverse mirror.  You can’t see me right now but I am rolling my eyes.  Last week we had this and if it wasn’t for another game ending early, I wouldn’t have seen any of the UCF-Memphis game which was fantastic (and which we all should have got….as long as you have the specialty pack).  So I am not guaranteeing that we get both the reverse mirror games.  Because we very well may only get one.  Brace yourselves.

UPDATE: Already an update and this post has been up for like five minutes.  Just found the coverage maps for the reverse mirror.  People who get ABC east of Detroit will get USF-Houston on ABC and have to hope ASU-USC is on the specialty pack.  The reverse for people who get ABC Detroit to the west coast.  ASU-USC on ABC, USF-Houston (fingers crossed) on the specialty pack.

UPDATE #2: Worst nightmares confirmed.  ASU-USC being shown on both ABC and the specialty pack and USF-UH nowhere to be found.  Ugh.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Boise State at Air Force 7:00 PM
#16 Texas A&M at Mississippi State 7:00 PM
#22 NC State at Syracuse 7:00 PM
Tulane at Tulsa 7:00 PM
FIU at Western Kentucky 7:30 PM
Tennessee at South Carolina 7:30 PM
#6 Texas at Oklahoma State 8:00 PM
#3 Notre Dame vs. Navy (in San Diego) 8:00 PM

The first of two straight weeks of primetime CBS college football.  The first one comes from San Diego where Notre Dame will either stomp all over Navy and most will say that’s the way Notre Dame has to be to get to the College Football Playoff or where Notre Dame will BARELY beat Navy and the college football media will go nuts thinking Notre Dame doesn’t belong in the College Football Playoff.

Not quite as good as the afternoon slate (thanks to the Cocktail Party) but still pretty good.  Longhorns try to avoid the upset to the Pokes so that people can still say that Texas is back.  And then…uh….well………OK there isn’t anything else of note really.  My guess is at least one of the other games goes down to the wire though.  Happens almost every week.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
#19 Oregon at Arizona 10:30 PM
Hawaii at Fresno State 10:30 PM
San Diego State at Nevada 10:30 PM

One Pac-12 After Dark game and two Late Night Mountain West games.  Hawaii-FSU is arguably the most important game in this timeslot.  Whoever wins basically competes with San Diego State for the Mountain West West Division title (or the Mountain West² Division title for you mathies…or for you perverts, the best kind of threesome Division title…as opposed to the Mountain Division which is the Devil’s Threesome Division title…OK I think I’m done here).

Games to set your eyeballs on

Florida vs. Georgia (in Jacksonville) (3:30, CBS) – Was there any doubt this was the game of the week?  It was always seemed to be a running joke that this was the closest Jacksonville residents got to watching successful football.  Last year changed that thanks to the Jags run to the AFC Championship.  Anyway, unless Kentucky defies the odds and continues to win going into their own game with Georgia, this is for the SEC East Division crown and a chance to hopefully not be curbstomped by Alabama.

Iowa at Penn State (3:30, specialty pack) – No one should sleep on the Hawkeyes.  They’re coached by Kirk Ferentz for God’s sake.  We know what can happen there.  Penn State probably needs a lot of help anyway just to get to the New Year’s Six as they are now basically third best in their division.  Iowa, on the other hand, could potentially sneak up on the rest of the Big Ten West and go back to the conference championship for the first time in three years.

Washington State at Stanford (7:00, Pac-12 Network) – Seriously?  Ugh.  Now this isn’t as bad as having a good game on FOX Sports One since we can’t get that here at all.  You can get the Pac-12 Network online.  I believe it’s available on DAZN (remember them?).  So I can’t fault this as much because technically it’s available in the Great White North.  But still, I can’t watch it.  So it sucks.  Plain and simple.  A Stanford win, I think, basically ends any Pac-12 shot at the College Football Playoff.  In October.  Let that sink in.

Clemson at Florida State (Noon, ABC/TSN1) – Here is Florida State’s chance to reclaim some semblance of glory.  This season and last have not been too kind to the Noles or their fans.  Lose this game and they have to win two of their final four just to be bowl eligible.  Crazy to think they are in this situation again but here we are.  For the Tigers it’s another case of don’t look ahead.  Win the game in front of you.  Keep on motoring to that division title.  They should but they have tripped up in the past when they really shouldn’t have (hi Pitt!).

USF at Houston (3:30, ABC/specialty pack) – Honestly I have no idea if we will even get this game.  Last week I figured we’d get the UCF-Memphis game around here and it was confined to the Southeastern U.S.  That same thing might happen again.  It’s almost a guarantee that all of us will not get this game on ABC (at the very least).  Anyway, a USF win here means the War on I-4 could be bigger than last year’s.  If you don’t think that’s possible, figure that if both teams come in undefeated, then the Group of Five spot is essentially on the line in that very game.  A Houston win could set up some interesting G-5 scenarios though.

Honourable mention: Appalachian State at Georgia Southern (Thursday, 7:30, specialty pack); Wisconsin at Northwestern (Noon, FOX); Texas at Oklahoma State (8:00, ABC/TSN2)

Some gambling fun and games

I got one upset right last week calling for Temple to beat Cincy.  The other one, well, not even close (thanks Sparty).  As for the rest of my picks I was almost perfect so let’s see if we can keep that ball rolling this week.

Houston over USF (mini-upset to start things off)

Penn State over Iowa

Wisconsin over Northwestern

Appalachian State over Georgia Southern

Oklahoma State over Texas (BIG UPSET!)

Clemson over Florida State

Georgia over Florida

Stanford over Washington State (minor upset I guess?)

Fresno State over Hawaii

FIU over Western Kentucky

BYU over Northern Illinois

As I said before…we now have FOOTBALL EVERY DAY!  Arm the confetti cannons!

Thursday Night Football again!  We get a decent game this week as Miami faces Houston.  The winner goes to 5-3 which is a good spot to be in halfway through the season.  I wonder if more people are watching Thursday Night Football this season than last.  It would really put a wrench in the whole “FOX is terrible at everything” narrative that many people like to blurt out.  I mean it will never approach NBC’s ratings for Sunday Night Football nor should it.  That is the premier game of the week (or it’s supposed to be at least).  I’d have to take a hard look as to whether it matches up with Monday Night Football though which is an NFL institution and has been for decades.  It should get more viewers than MNF since the Monday Nighter is rife with terrible matchups or terrible teams or both.  And the booth hasn’t helped any.  Jason Witten is AWFUL and Booger McFarland in a crane is a stupid idea that should have gone away once Paul Maguire retired.  I have always thought Joe Tessitore was one of the best college football announcers around.  I do think he gets a little too excitable at times when he doesn’t need to be though.  All in all, a bit of a disaster.

This weekend I am going all in watching football.  All of Saturday (pretty much) and most of Sunday (pretty much).  I will get almost nothing done.  Maybe I will get a workout in.  Maybe I will get groceries bought.  Who the hell knows!  And honestly, I don’t care.  Remember this when it’s February and football is months away.  Enjoy the games everyone!

Back to Normalcy…or is it Normality? Week 3 College Football TV Schedule

We do have another postponement due to Hurricane Irma to deal with and it’s a doozy.  The expected ABC Primetime matchup between Miami and Florida State has been moved to October which also means that Miami’s game against Georgia Tech the following week has been moved from Thursday night to Saturday afternoon so that the Hurricanes don’t have to play two good ACC teams in a matter of five days.  Got all that?  Good, since it’s just the start of this.

Now ABC didn’t have a primetime game so Clemson-Louisville,originally on in the afternoon, was moved into that slot.  This meant a game had to move into the 3:30 ABC slot and that ended up being Wisconsin-BYU (which may be the first time in a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time BYU has appeared on ABC).  The dominoes continued to fall behind that but I won’t bore you with the details.  Other than that there are no big changes so everything in the college football world at least is back to normal (it will be a long time before any semblance of normalcy (normality?) returns to the Houston area and to most of Florida).  All I have to say is that ABC/ESPN/Disney did very well with this when they could have easily screwed it up.  It also gives the Canadian telcos a chance to catch up and figure everything out.  It shouldn’t take much but we know how that sometimes goes.

I am back from playing with my PVR last weekend (or are they officially called DVRs now like in the States?).  I forgot how frustrating it can be.  If I am busy at all on weekends when I have my kids (and I am guaranteed to be for months now) it puts me in a bit of a quandary:

  • Go through the games on the PVR knowing I will be at least a couple hours behind and I will never catch up or,
  • Forget the PVR and watch the games live knowing I may have missed something earlier and will only see highlights (possibly) from it.

It’s a tough call.  I love college football and watch a shit-ton of it.  I am passionate about it.  But at the same time, when I am watching games into Sunday afternoon to catch up on all the action, it does start to get to be a bit too much.  I will have to do some more thinking on this topic as the season goes on as there are a lot of factors that go into my decision (how long I will be away from the TV on Saturday, whether I will put enough time on a recording to catch the entire game, etc.).  Anyway, you know way too much about my viewing habits so let’s move on to what you’re here for, the TV schedule.

Thursday

US Canada
New Mexico at Boise State 8:00 PM

TSN slowly starting their step up towards American Thanksgiving time when they end up showing around ten games or so.  What is interesting here is the time: 8:00.  That means it starts at 6 local time in Boise.  Sometimes I wonder if ESPN really thinks about this or not.

Friday

US Canada
Illinois at #22 USF 7:00 PM
UMass at Temple 7:00 PM
Arizona at UTEP 10:15 PM

Another TSN2 game and this is one that many thought would be postponed like the Miami-FSU game.  Instead, USF will be giving a lot of free tickets away for people affected by the hurricane in the Tampa area which is awesome.  Would be nice to see a full house for, arguably, the best Group of Five team this season.  The late affair is interesting with one of the worst Power Five teams against one of the worst G-5 teams.  Watch it be an amazing game.

Saturday Early

US Canada
#25 UCLA at Memphis Noon
Air Force at #7 Michigan Noon
#9 Oklahoma State at Pittsburgh Noon
UConn at Virginia Noon
Kansas at Ohio* Noon
UL-Lafayette at Texas A&M Noon
Iowa State at Akron Noon
Furman at NC State 12:30 PM

Part of the domino effect I mentioned earlier has us seeing UCLA travelling almost all the way across the country to play Memphis on ABC at Noon.  I am shocked OSU-Pitt didn’t end up in that slot but it feels like the ABC Noon slot really isn’t as important as even the ESPN timeslots are now.  I will definitely be missing the first half of all these games and I am fine with that considering the schedule.  As of right now, KU-OU isn’t showing up on the Bell or Rogers/Eastlink specialty packs.

UPDATE: Still no sign of Kansas-Ohio but Baylor-Duke is now appearing, at least on Bell schedules, on the specialty pack.  Start time for that game is 12:30.

Saturday Afternoon

US Canada
#23 Tennessee at #24 Florida 3:30 PM
Morgan State at Rutgers 3:30 PM
Middle Tennessee at Minnesota 3:30 PM
#10 Wisconsin at BYU 3:30 PM
Notre Dame at Boston College 3:30 PM
North Texas at Iowa 3:30 PM
SMU at #20 TCU 3:30 PM
#16 Virginia Tech at East Carolina 3:30 PM
Purdue at Missouri 4:00 PM
Mercer at #15 Auburn 4:00 PM
Army at #8 Ohio State 4:30 PM

OK there is a reason this is one of the lower rated weeks of the year.  Still not a whole lot of substance here although there is at least a good quantity of games in the afternoon timeslot.  I honestly pray that Army keeps the game with tOSU close.  Even if it’s just to scare Buckeyes fans.

Saturday Primetime

US Canada
Bethune-Cookman at Florida Atlantic 6:30 PM
#12 LSU at Mississippi State 7:00 PM
Colorado State at #1 Alabama 7:00 PM
Oregon at Wyoming 7:00 PM
#18 Kansas State at Vanderbilt 7:30 PM
Samford at #13 Georgia 7:30 PM
Kentucky at South Carolina 7:30 PM
Georgia State at #5 Penn State 7:30 PM
Bowling Green at Northwestern 7:30 PM
#3 Clemson at #14 Louisville 8:00 PM
Texas at #4 USC 8:30 PM

OK this is better.  Not amazing but still better.  Some sneaky-good games in here with KSU-Vandy, Oregon-Wyoming, UK-SC, and LSU-MSU dotting the primetime landscape along with the later main two games of the week.

Saturday Late Night

US Canada
San Jose State at Utah 10:00 PM
Ole Miss at California 10:30 PM
#19 Stanford at San Diego State 10:30 PM

An odd one as we see an SEC team go to uncharted territory: west of the Central Time Zone.  I bet I could count on one hand how many times an SEC team has gone out west in the last decade.  I’m not going to do it but I have a feeling I am right.  Stanford-SDSU has the chance to be a high-scoring affair on CBSSN.

Games to set your eyeballs on

Clemson at Louisville (8:00, ABC) – I honestly think this may be a better game than the Miami-FSU game would have been.  Let’s see if Clemson still has what it takes to stay in the Top 4.  Let’s see if Lamar Jackson can really push his Heisman campaign into high gear.  This is make-or-break I believe for both teams.  The loser, arguably, has no chance at the College Football Playoff unless chaos happens.  And I do hope for chaos.

Tennessee at Florida (3:30, CBS) – College football traditions.  Howard’s Rock.  The 12th Man.  Play Like a Champion Today.  Boomer Sooner.  Dotting the i.  And the SEC on CBS getting an absolutely STACKED lineup all season.  Unless Georgia really makes a run (which they may just do after last week’s big win over Notre Dame), this could be the de facto SEC East championship game.  If Florida wins this, oh boy, the takes on Butch Jones’ job will be fast, furious, and HOT.

Oklahoma State at Pittsburgh (Noon, TSN2) – The Pokes are still considered the dark horse contender not just for the Big XII title (although the way Oklahoma is playing I think they may have already clinched it) but for a spot in the College Football Playoff.  This is the kind of game they cannot lose.  Just ask Penn State.

Texas at USC (8:30, FOX) – As long as the game is good, this FOX offsetting the start times by half an hour from any other broadcast is very much a good thing.  And yes I am putting this game here knowing full well that the Trojans could possibly mop the floor with the Longhorns.  Combine that with the earlier Army-tOSU game and it could be the most lopsided FOX doubleheader ever.  I am hoping that is not the case and that Tom Herman has figured out something since Week One’s debacle.

LSU at Mississippi State (7:00, specialty pack) – The only non-specialty pack game of the week this week.  That’s a good sign for Canadian college football fans right?  OK let’s not go too far here.  Anyway, this should be a good one as the Tigers better not take the Bulldogs lightly after what MSU did to LaTech last week.  I mean it was LaTech but holy shit…3rd and 93?

Honourable mention: Kansas State at Vanderbilt (7:30, specialty pack); Illinois at USF (Friday, 7:00, TSN2); UCLA at Memphis (Noon, ABC/TSN3)

Some gambling fun and games

Well I did shitty last week.  Let’s see if I can be less shitty.

USF over Illinois

UCLA over Memphis (although I can see this being close)

Pittsburgh over Oklahoma State (call it my upset special)

Florida over Tennessee

Wisconsin over BYU

LSU over Mississippi State

Kansas State over Vanderbilt

Stanford over San Diego State

Minnesota over Middle Tennessee

Penn State over Georgia State (the question is does PSU get a 60-burger in this one?)

Ohio over Kansas (this doesn’t feel like an upset)

OK Bell’s schedule is up (other than the KU-OU game I mentioned I above and I believe that will change over the next 24 hours).  I can’t seem to get much Rogers info past Friday.  Again, something that should change soon.

Have to always remember to mention the NFL Thursday Nighter now every week.  Houston travels to Cincinnati.  One team has to look better than last week in theory, no?  Watch it be a 3-3 tie.  Enjoy the games everyone.
