Biggest Games of the 2014 College Football season – Part III

And it continues.  Part three of the most important games of the college football season.  This is where my picks of where these games will show on TV get worse and worse.  Don’t worry, it’s not like I am putting that big-time Idaho-New Mexico State game in the primetime ABC slot but when it comes to the last half of the year, much is made on how well (or poorly) a team is doing as to whether they appear on national TV or not.  Because let’s be honest…did anyone have Auburn or Missouri appearing in a lot of big-time late season games last year?  Fuck off you did not!

Week 9

Michigan at Michigan State – Ah, the battle for Michigan (sorry directional Michigan schools). These two schools seem to be heading in the opposite direction and unfortunately for Wolverines fans, I see this being merely a blip on Sparty’s radar as they head for a showdown with Ohio State. (3:30, ABC)

Texas at Kansas State – Don’t get me wrong. I think Charlie Strong is a great coach who will do great things in Austin. Problem is, this year won’t be the year that many great things will happen. Oklahoma, Baylor, and, this week, Grandpa Snyder’s Wildcats will probably all beat the Horns. Better luck in 2015, me thinks. (3:30, FOX)

South Carolina at Auburn – Can the Ol’ Ball Coach will the Gamecocks to run the table? Tough to do in the SEC (if you aren’t coached by Evil Saban) but it can be done. This may be the toughest test all year for the Cocks (yes, I went there again), but a win elevates them into the national title picture, something that has really never truly happened before. (3:30, CBS)

Oregon State at Stanford – Among the many trap games for the national title contenders, there’s this one. The Beavers’ offense is scary good with Sean Mannion throwing the ball about 88 times a game. Who he throws it to is anybody’s guess. The usually stout Cardinal defense is going to have its hands full here. Especially with the Beavers’ big brother next on the sked. (7:00, TSN2)

Oregon vs. California (in Santa Clara) – First college football game ever at the new Levi’s Stadium (home of the 49ers). From what I have heard the stadium is awesome. Which is great because this game will suck…for the Bears. Can Oregon put up a 70-burger in this one? (Friday, 10:00, FS1…when will we ever get these games on Canadian television????)

Alabama at Tennessee – Another in the long line of games where Butch (Cassidy) Jones and his Vols gang have to prove how far they’ve come since the last three years. Spoiler alert: not too far. Maybe, just maybe, this will be more competitive than I think. To be honest I am hoping for that so it gives me an excuse to watch it and not switch the channel to any other games. (7:00, specialty pack)

Honourable Mention: Ohio State at Penn State (8:00, ABC), BYU at Boise State (Friday, 9:00, TSN3), Arizona State at Washington (3:30, TSN3)

Week 10

Stanford at Oregon – One of the games of the year. With apologies to Washington and Oregon State, this is the Pac-12 North title game. Can Oregon FINALLY slay the Stanford beast in this one? I think they finally pull through on their march to the College Football Playoff (the actual playoff, not the bowl game appetizer). (3:30, ABC)

Florida State at Louisville – The second of the two huge challenges Fun Bobby and his Cardinals Gang face in their first ACC season. At least this one is at home. This truly could be the one roadblock to the Noles getting back to the national championship. (Thursday, 7:30, TSN)

Arizona at UCLA – Playoffs? PLAYOFFS? God it would be great if Junior Mora recreated his dad’s iconic press conference speech this season. But honestly, the Bruins are good enough to get to the CFP party. The Fighting RichRods will do their damnedest to stop this juggernaut but I can’t see them handling Hundley, Jack, et al. (Thursday, 10:30, TSN2)

Florida vs. Georgia (in Jacksonville) – The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party! Don’t say that too loud because the NCAA doesn’t like that name for this game and will probably investigate me for recruiting violations or some other shit. Either way, this is my second year imploring CBS to provide free booze to Verne and Gary in the booth for the game. It would ramp up the excitement (for me at least). (3:30, CBS)

North Carolina at Miami – Al Golden and Al Golden’s tie are looking to win the ACC Coastal (or is it Atlantic…why can’t they go with North and South for fuck’s sake?). They have many teams to contend with including the chic pick to win the division, Senor Fedora’s Tar Heels. I am still lobbying for Larry to wear a Tar Heel blue fedora to coach a game. Just once. Maybe it will become a trend. Like houndstooth caps or visors or eating grass. (12:00, ABC)

Texas at Texas Tech – Kute Kliff Kingsbury (no I will not do the initials) leads his Red Raiders into this game looking to prove they are not a middle-of-the-road Big XII team. Sorry Klifford, you are. But so is your opponent (this year) so no worries, have a beer on me. (3:30, TSN3)

Honourable Mention: Navy vs. Notre Dame (in Landover) (7:00, CBS), Oklahoma State at Kansas State (7:30, FOX), USC at Washington State (3:30, Pac-12 Network…damn)

Week 11

Baylor at Oklahoma – In my mind, THIS is the Big XII Championship game (until they bring in BYU and, um, well, Cincinnati perhaps?). Too close to call but I am pretty sure the score will be well past the 30-30 mark. And thankfully it looks like I’ll be able to see this game too! (7:30, FOX)

Ohio State at Michigan State – In my mind, THIS is the Big Ten East Division championship game (apologies to fucking nobody since the rest of the teams aren’t on the same level as these two). Urban has his mind on revenge while trying to outcoach Mark D’Antonio (Little Giants? Can we see Little Giants here? Please? I would pay just to see the reaction on Meyer’s face if they pulled that just like the Irish game years ago.) (8:00, ABC)

Alabama at LSU – In my mind, THIS…is probably not the SEC West Division championship game. With Auburn and Ole Miss looming, I can see LSU falling to #4 in their division. Crazy. However, this is in Death Valley, and I remember a certain Defensive Game of the Century a few years back (that led to, ultimately, the death of the BCS) where LSU outlasted the Tide in a thriller (somewhat). Don’t think it can’t happen again. (8:00, CBS)

Notre Dame at Arizona State – In my mind, THIS…is a great place to continue the Fighting Irish Recruiting Machine. Also, I think this will be quite a close game as the Irish need every win they can get to be in the College Football Playoff extravaganza and the Sun Devils need every win to…well you get the point. (3:30, ABC)

Texas A&M at Auburn – In my mind…OK I’ll stop now. Money Manziel made the Aggies offense go (along with Mike Evans). Now that Manziel is gone (along with Evans), the Aggies will undoubtedly have less punch to their offense. And we all know how crap-tastic their defense has been against real offenses like, oh, say, Nick Marshall and the Tigers? This could potentially be a blowout. (4:00, specialty pack)

UTSA at Rice – Yes I know you probably think I am crazy. However, this could be UTSA’s breakout game. Larry Coker (remember him?) is ready to take his team to the next level and this is the game that should propel them there. Next stop, Conference USA Championship game (as long as they don’t fuck up any other games on their conference schedule) where they can be destroyed by the Rakeem Cato Express. (12:00, FS1…yeah I figured that one).

Honourable Mention: Bowling Green at Akron (yes, seriously and Tuesday, 7:30, specialty pack), UCLA at Washington (3:00, FOX), Florida at Vanderbilt (3:30, CBS)

Week 12

Florida State at Miami – It had been years since this was a relevant matchup. Until last year. And the Noles mopped the floor with the U. Hopefully the power of Al Golden’s tie can help the Canes make this closer. Win this and they may wrap up their division. Lose and it’s all up for grabs. (8:00, ABC)

Nebraska at Wisconsin – One of Pelini’s four losses? Maybe. (12:00, TSN2)

South Carolina at Florida – So many roadblocks in the SEC. Carolina has to go into the Swamp and beat a rejuvenated (WILL MUSCHAMP hopes) Gators squad to continue their run to the College Football Playoff. Won’t be easy because other than last year’s debacle, the Gators are dangerous at home. (12:00, Peachtree)

Auburn at Georgia – Speaking of roadblocks, these two teams are roadblocks for the other. Auburn still has to worry about the Iron Bowl, whereas this is basically the end of the SEC line for Georgia. This may be a tad more important to the Dawgs and I give them the edge here (no Prayer at Jordan-Hare here…more like a Rumble Between The Hedges). (3:30, CBS)

East Carolina at Cincinnati – Again with the Group of Five conference games. With UCF losing the personnel they have, this is the best bet for the American Conference championship game (until next year when Navy joins the conference). Could the Pirates surprise in their first year in the conference? Will the Carden & Hardy Show get to the CFP Semi-Important Bowl-apalooza El Fantastico? They have to beat Tubby’s Cats here to do so (along with every other game since their only option is to run the table). (Thursday, 7:00, TSN3)

Missouri at Texas A&M – The SEC newbies renew their, um, rivalry I guess? Not much of a rivalry really even with these two being conference mates for about two decades now. This is where Mizzou has to show they are the stronger of the two now with Gianni Futbol playing on the shores of Lake Erie (more of that in another post). (7:30, specialty pack)

Honourable Mention: Toledo at Northern Illinois (Tuesday, 8:00, specialty pack), Texas at Oklahoma State (7:30, FOX), Ohio State at Minnesota (12:00, TSN3)
