College Football

Why don’t we just refer to it as ‘Dropping a Clemson’? Week 8 Recappin’ Time!

First off, sorry about the lateness of this recap.  I am still stunned from Saturday night’s “Ass Kickin on ABC.”    What in the blue hell was that?  Did the Clemson players run down the hill and say “OK, I’ve had enough for tonight?”  That was painful to watch.  Like extremely painful.  And I was so hyped for this game!  I actually turned the channel to (gasp!) the USC-Notre Dame game!  Poor Dabo.

Way to go Louisville

Same goes for UCLA.  Houston you get a pass since many still don’t think you will be bowl-eligible by the end of the year.  But the Cardinals were supposed to be the ones to screw up the BCS one last time.  Go undefeated yet still out of the national championship.  What a travesty!  Instead they let the Bortles & Johnson show come to their portion of Kentucky and show them what the Fighting O’Learys are all about.  Now, not only are they done in the national championship conversation, they probably won’t even win the American’s spot in the BCS.  UCF controls their destiny and will probably run the table and nab the Orange Bowl berth.

Missouri?  BAYLOR?  MIAMI????

Yes, yes, and possibly yes.  There is a good chance, if things go the way I think they will, that you are looking at three of the ten BCS teams this season.  If there is anyone out there who chose these three teams to have that opportunity, even this late into the season, I will personally hire someone to surgically remove the horseshoe.  Baylor is just a fun team to watch.  Miami has some of that old The U Swagger back.  And Missouri?  Coldly efficient.  And how about Mister Mauk?  I figured with James Franklin (the other James Franklin) injured for at least a month, that Mizzou’s chances of the SEC East were gone.  Now they host South Carolina in four days.  Win and they basically wrap up the division before Halloween.

Updated Bowl Projections of Fun and Excitement

Everyone loves bowl projections.  And by everyone I mean hardly anyone.  Even the day before conference championship games there will be a ton of people saying “IT’S TOO EARLY FOR BOWL PROJECTIONS!!!”  And yes, those comments normally come in ALL CAPS.  So for those people I say, too fucking bad.  For the others that actually read this thing, be kind.  Or don’t.  Doesn’t matter to me.  I have beer to sooth me.

BCS National Championship Alabama Florida State

Yeah I know it’s different from last time, so sue me.  Thankfully I’m not American because someone just may if I was.  So I have projected Bama-FSU for the championship.  The way Famous Jameis and the Noles offense clicked against Clemson, I can’t see them losing the rest of the way.  However, there will be at least four undefeated teams at the end of the year by my count.  Include BCS-buster Fresno State and Ohio State who won’t have the strength of schedule to be included in the title game.  The other conference winners would be UCF, Baylor, and Stanford.  The Cardinal will beat Oregon who will dominate every other game and make it into the BCS as an at-large.  Missouri will hold on, probably with one regular season and an SEC Championship loss, to get to the Sugar Bowl.  Miami will be good enough to play at home at the Orange Bowl.  Baylor will survive the war of attrition that is the Big XII.  I can see two Baylor losses and still being in the BCS since that conference will be beating up on itself.

Other Bowl Projection Notes

  • Northern Illinois could end up undefeated as well, but either way they will end up as the MAC champ and go to the GoDaddy bowl.
  • I can see quite a few teams playing in their home state over the holidays.  I project (at this point) the following bowls to have teams from their state (which would probably boost attendance big time):  Orange (Miami & USF), Cotton (Texas A&M & Texas), Rose (Stanford), Gator (Florida), Chick-fil-A (Georgia), Liberty (Tennessee), Holiday (UCLA), Alamo (Texas Tech), Belk (Wake Forest), Fight Hunger (USC), Texas (TCU), & Poinsettia (San Diego State).  You might as well include Rutgers at the Pinstripe Bowl.  So 15 teams playing in their home state.  If you want to boost bowl game attendance, there’s a good start.
  • Notre Dame will probably lose against Stanford late in the season.  This means no BCS bowl.  It also means they have to pick up the bowl game scraps.  The way things are going, the Heart of Dallas Bowl will snatch them up and quick.  This will make things very interesting as will it push this game off of ESPNU with the Irish there?  Then again, Notre Dame plays Air Force at 5:00 EST on CBS Sports Network so they obviously don’t have the cache they used to.
  • A few teams will be left out of the bowl party.  They would include: Boston College, Louisiana Tech, UL-Lafayette, and a trio of MAC teams (Toledo, Ohio, and Central Michigan).  Don’t worry you six.  More bowl games are coming next season!

OK that was longer than I thought it would be.  Later on in the week I will get pissed off at Bell for not having their U.S. College Sports package schedule.  But I will still march forward with whatever I can provide.
